ntpdate can not ajust time when date is in the future?

root@home:~ $ ssh 192.168.100.3
Last login: Sun Apr  3 22:05:19 2016 from 192.168.100.2
root@orangepione:~ $ date
Thu Jul  8 21:37:42 EEST 2032
root@orangepione:~ $ ntpdate 128.100.100.128
 8 Jul 21:37:59 ntpdate[1553]: Can't adjust the time of day: Invalid argument

after setting date in the past ntpdate works ....

root@orangepione:~ $ date
Sat Jan  1 02:06:23 EET 2000
root@orangepione:~ $ ntpdate 128.100.100.128
 5 Apr 00:23:40 ntpdate[1716]: step time server 128.100.100.128 offset 513119826.859864 sec

BUT with "-b" switch it is working

root@orangepione:~ $ ntpdate -b ntp.ubuntu.com
 8 Apr 23:53:05 ntpdate[3130]: step time server 91.189.94.4 offset -513463027.463541 sec
