    Pre-made images for download are compressed while building an image by yourself is not by default.
    use xz to compress it and you should get to your desired ~250M

    Just FYI if that has an impact for you: MINIMAL images only differ in the amount of pre-installed userspace packages. Kernel/firmware-wise all images, regardless if CLI, desktop or minimal share the very same kernel package. No minimalism there.

    You would want to add: BUILD_MINIMAL=yes (the default is the non-minimal server build)
