April 2, 20251 yr Hi everybody. I have one of these cards (along with many other OPis and RPis) and I was trying to use it for my Home Assistant installation, but OPi's Debian was not correctly complied so it did not work with ZIgbee USB adapters (and with many other things). I tested the Armbian imga someone put here, but I couldn't make it work. I tried to recompile OPis Debian and to my surprise it complied without any glitch and everything is working. As soon as I can (which may take some time) I'll try to build my own Armbian image. If I succeed I'll bring it here. This message was just to say that OPi's Debian is working fine when rebuilt from scratch, in case someone needs a working system right now. Best regards. Angel
April 8, 20251 yr HI, Angel would you share your working image of orange pi 4a ? I would like to use something useful untill an armbian image is available
April 8, 20251 yr @Angel Luis Pérez Thank you very much for your valuable contribution and for sharing your experience with the community. I came across your post about successfully rebuilding Debian for the Orange Pi 4A, and it sounds like a great solution for those of us struggling with the official images. If it’s not too much trouble, would you mind sharing the image you built? I’d be incredibly grateful for any help you could provide. Edited April 9, 20251 yr by BigGratz
April 9, 20251 yr @Angel Luis Pérez Can you please upload your debian image. Plus kindly explain which hardware part is not working?
April 11, 20251 yr Sorry everybody, been really busy these days. Where can I upload the image so that all of you can get it? Regards. Angel Luis Perez Edit: I shared it in GDrive. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VClauaXtNZEkqzH8XBSHnJkweS142Ztv/view?usp=drive_link I didn't change absolutely nothing in the build configuration. I mean, if you want you can just download the source code (it's explained quite clearly in th OPi 4a manual) from OrangePi an just "build". Nothing changed. I hope it works for you. Please take into account I'm not a developerand I didn't change anything in the code. I mean, don't ask me about the build, because I can't help you :(. I just tested to build Debian and it just works... Edited April 11, 20251 yr by Angel Luis Pérez Link shared
April 11, 20251 yr Thank you for your response! If it's convenient for you, could you please upload the image to Mega.nz ? Or any file-sharing service.
April 11, 20251 yr @ioncube I'm not sure I understand you. With the OPi source rebuild everything seems to work. With the build sharde by OrangePi in their web there were drivers missing. I.E. the USB Zigbee adapter from SonOff was not being recognised, and I'm afraid that any other device which should use /dev/ttyXXX would not work, because the needed drivers were not in the build. Maybe there are some other drivers missing, I don't know, I just tested with the Zigbee adapter, and it didn't work in Debian nor Ubuntu OPi releases. Regards.
April 12, 20251 yr Does anyone have the i2c working in the orange pi 4a? I tried the debian official image and build my image with the orange pi source code but I can't get it to work, everything works including spi gpio, any help will be appreciated, also I want to build Armbian for the orange pi 4a
April 12, 20251 yr I never said this was Armbian, sorry. What I said was: "This message was just to say that OPi's Debian is working fine when rebuilt from scratch, in case someone needs a working system right now." Sorry if I didn't explain clearly. Regards. Edited April 12, 20251 yr by Angel Luis Pérez
April 12, 20251 yr Author @Ángel Luis Pérez You don't have to apologize because the type of image was very clear in the post where you reported it... it's just a matter of reading 🙂
April 13, 20251 yr @JamesCL Thanks, English is not my native language, so it's very easy for me to make a mistake. I assume it 🙃 On the other hand, @Daniel Nuñez Villegas, if you tell me how can I test I2C I can check my OPi. But from tomorrow I'll be out for a few days, so it will take some time... Regards. April 14, 20251 yr On 4/12/2025 at 5:31 PM, BigGratz said: where is Armbian here? The software used by the Orange Pi "team" is, to a very large extent (estimates go as high as 99.9%), based on the work of developers from the Armbian project (and beyond). Their contribution mainly includes adding basic support for new boards, but unfortunately, without further maintenance or long-term support – which practically means that the entire burden of maintenance and support falls on the community. It should be noted that systems such as Orange OS Ubuntu and Debian on ARM architecture are the result of years of work by more than 500 people gathered around the Armbian project. Orange Pi only makes minor adjustments. In the past ten years, we have not seen a single contribution from any member of the Orange Pi team to the development of these key components. Absolutely nothing, while they keep signing under our work (even changed to some degree) ... on top of stealing software support. Which they don't provide in any way. The work of the Orange Pi team (which appears to be just one individual), on top of some old Armbian, can be tracked here: https://github.com/orangepi-xunlong/orangepi-build/commits/next (they removed other board configs)
April 16, 20251 yr @Angel Luis Pérezthank you for you help, you can test i2c attaching a sensor like MPU6050 in the i2c pins (TWI4, TWI1, TW5), enable the i2c like in the orange pi user manual (add the overlay in /boot/extlinux/extlinux.com), and use the same command to test the i2c (sudo i2cdetect -y 4), it will show a table with all the i2c devices attached with their addresses, for instance if you are using a MPU6050 it will report the address 0x68, mine it is not reporting the address, it pauses the scanning for five seconds at the column 60 and the row 8, meaning that it is like detecting the address but finally it doesn't reports nothing, so it results with an empty table, also i tried to write and read registers but without success. also i tried to connect an arduino acting as i2c slave device and printing every device information, including when it acknowledges the address, for debugging purposes, the arduino acknowledges the programmed address (0x20), but the orange pi 4a can't see any attached device, also the arduino can't receive any data.
April 26, 20251 yr just to share my experienced, i had 2 orangepi : opi4a and opi5pro. for opi5pro, flashed with armbian orangepi5pro community. install zerotier, proxmox and install lxc and VM HAOS with no issue. i tried on opi4a, default debian and ubuntu with no luck. after compile the image https://github.com/orangepi-xunlong/orangepi-build/commits/next , and enable additional kernel config for everything missing in default opi4a (tun. tap, lvm, lvm-thin, ebt, kvm) now zerotier install working, proxmox partial complete. LXC working, but VM no luck: "KVM configured but not available", there is no /dev/kvm. create manual via "mknod /dev/kvm c 10 232" still not working. already compared all "KVM" related in opi4a config and opi5pro, and enable the possible KVM config one in opi4a. please, if you any idea, what is missing ? i tried to enable SMT support kernel also but still NOK. thanks
May 4, 20251 yr @Fajar Muttaqin Can you share your compiled kernel & headers `.debs` In default kernel support for filesystems `cifs` & `nfs` were not included. I compiled with these support as well https://github.com/defencedog/orangepi4A/tree/main/kernels
May 13, 20251 yr Hello! If somebody search a resolution how to enable can interface (it`s necessery for 3d printers with can bus circuits) on orange pi distr - you can use attachment kernel conf for build image. You should palce it in `orange-build/external/config/kenrel` (with replace) or `orange-build/kernel` and load on kernel configuration. Other steps is default for building opi image: git clone https://github.com/orangepi-xunlong/orangepi-build mv -f ./linux-5.15-sun55iw3-current.config ./orangepi-build/external/config/kernel cd ./orangepi-build sudo ./build.sh BOARD=orangepi4a BRANCH=current BUILD_OPT=image RELEASE=jammy BUILD_MINIMAL=no BUILD_DESKTOP=no KERNEL_CONFIGURE=n If the OS does not detect the can0 interface - check if any CAN device is connected voron@voron:~$ lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 004: ID 1b3f:2247 Generalplus Technology Inc. June 21, 20251 yr @Angel Luis Pérez Your image save my life! I just got the Radxa Cubie A5E and surprisingly found that this two eth ports board factory image doesn't include tun.ko I dig some other same T527/A527 boards image but none of them has tun.ko from 5.15 kernel, except yours! I am about to export the tun.ko to Cubie A5E's factory image to see if it works.
June 23, 20251 yr OrangePi 4A Bluetooth Mouse Keyboard connectivity issue Solved The solution to the problem when mouse pairs / connects with BT but doesnt work Prebuilt kernel files are available https://github.com/defencedog/orangepi4A/blob/main/Bluetooth%20Mouse%20Not%20Working%20Solved.md
June 24, 20251 yr @Nick_SlTried everything, the same module in a raspberry pi 4 works, but in the orange pi 4A no, I tried to get the output signals using an oscilloscope, the signals are inconsistent and have a lot of noise, maybe there is an issue with the i2c kernel driver.
June 25, 20251 yr fwiw I was able to build a set of Armbian kernel packages based on 6.16-rc1 and this patchset: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20250619173007.3367034-1-wens@kernel.org/ If it works, no clue, don't have the hw. Just played around. https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/8330
June 25, 20251 yr Im currently trying to implement gpu support, but ive been stuck on the same error since a few days. Heres my armbianmonitor -u output: https://paste.armbian.com/uforekotuw root@radxa-cubie-a5e:~# cat /sys/kernel/debug/pm_genpd/pm_genpd_summary domain status children performance /device runtime status managed by ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ pd1_gpu off-0 0 pd1_pcie off-0 0 pd1_nand off-0 0 pd1_de off-0 0 pd1_vo1 off-0 0 4510000.ethernet suspended 0 SW pd1_vo0 off-0 0 pd1_vi off-0 0 pd1_ve off-0 0 pd_riscv off-0 0 pd_sram off-0 0 pd_npu off-0 0 pd_dsp off-0 0 dmesg | grep -i "gpu\|mali" [ 1.836128] panfrost 1800000.gpu: clock rate = 432000000 [ 1.848131] panfrost 1800000.gpu: gpu soft reset timed out, attempting hard reset [ 1.858262] panfrost 1800000.gpu: gpu hard reset timed out [ 1.858486] panfrost 1800000.gpu: Fatal error during GPU init [ 1.858674] panfrost 1800000.gpu: probe with driver panfrost failed with error -110
July 6, 20251 yr I added a patch that activates the gpu. https://lore.kernel.org/linux-sunxi/20250706025625.2707073-1-iuncuim@gmail.com A ready to install kernel is available for manjaro. But it's worth realizing that without output it will be useless at the moment.
July 8, 20251 yr Hi, I haven't posted for a while since I don't have an OrangePi 4A, just a Cubie A5E. I compiled Armbian for OrangePi 4a, kernel 6.16-rc4. No video yet, just a serial console. Can anyone test the image? https://github.com/juanesf/build/commits/Opi4A/ https://paste.armbian.com/ranagabiku https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dx0TApPAEjFDz24Rm22J4jgtIbJrYYHC?usp=sharing Edited July 8, 20251 yr by JuanEsf add link
July 10, 20251 yr Hi, I successfully booted from the @JuanEsf image. but there is no pci and ethernet, the network is only wifi. initlog.txt dmesg.txt
