I do this manually, every day few boards, those which I have around - basically I am manually updating my test farm. Many thanks to all that already helped in making this list longer. Release text is also WIP - even AI helps, its still quite a lot of work to convince (drunk / stupid) AI what do we want

Recently @NicoD has been helping to release some videos on the Armbian community as well he usually keeps up with reviewing and documenting single board computers.

This got me thinking it would probably be awesome to have a central place to document Armbian related videos and documentation that exists.

I will try to post any good Armbian related channels or videos my self, but I would invite anyone else who would like to contribute to this thread as well!

The reason is that we had a (not so) small whoopsie at the very last minute and the infra is still recovering and syncing. 

Easiest workaround would be to simply try multiple times until the redirector hits a mirror that has the files you want to download.
Alternatively go directly to https://fi.mirror.armbian.de/ which (seems to) have all the files atm. Will work with apt as well.

from time to time we have to decide on which boards we drop the maintained status and stop development in order to keep (or try at least) the workload for us at a controllable level.

These boards are not necessarily end-of-life (EOL) but reached a decent enough state to let them go from active development.

Though after today's developer meeting we are unsure how to name these boards. Therefore we ask our community what they think. Let us know by either voting or leaving a comment below.

This project will work to refactor and replace the currently existing ‘armbian-config’ command line tool. The main reason for refactoring this tool is to get rid of the ‘beta’ label.

The current version of the tool was never properly designed and is potentially unsafe to use. We want to re-make it with appropriate coding standards, to enhance security and add better support for automation.

Goals of the refactoring project:

• Cleaner and more secure code
• Unit testing of critical functions via Github CI
• Write in in a single / common language - Bash
• Use independant modules for each feature, making adding new features easier
• Leverage specific common libraries
  • bash-utilities
• Create CLI / API / TUI interfaces for the tool
  • User created code can more easily call functions of configurator externally via CLI or API
    • Better scriptablility for ‘first boot scripts’
  • Create a better user experience in graphical environments
• Better documentation around how to use the program and different interfaces (CLI / API / TUI)
• Better commented and documented code

  • We are looking for developers experienced in bash – you must be able to follow general development standards, utilize the provided libraries and be able to create secure code.

  • If you are looking to help we would ask that you at least commit to finish the work your assigned in a reasonable time frame while maintaining general development standards for you work product.

Unfortunately due to that we notice and increasing amount of complains about such things won't work which is for some to be expected and for the other related to unstable userspace (like Debian sid). Dealing with such support requests causes time loss on our end and frustration on user's end since these issues most likely cannot even be solved by us.

On our last Weekly Armbian Community Voice Chat on Discord we discussed this topic and came up with a few ideas how to deal with the situation.

While we haven't had a chance yet to post a job posting for it but we are looking for a graphical designer to help us revamp some of the Armbian logos as well as help design a skin for the upcoming graphical Armbian Configurator interface based on QT5.

We are happy to discuss realistic hourly rates (keeping in mind we have a limited budget) if you are not able to volunteer your time, though would also accept those who are able to donate or volunteer their time as well.  There is currently no deadlines set for this work, so we can work with volunteers on a time schedule that works best for them, as long as they are dedicated to getting the work completed in a reasonable time.

Benefits provided for a Supported SBC

• Armbian will publish and distribute "stable" CLI images through its mirror network
• Armbian will publish and distribute "periodic / nightly" CLI and Desktop images
• Armbian will work with SBC maintainer to assure compatiblity within the Armbian Build System
• Armbian will provide the team's unique expertise to assist maintainer with general challenges
• Best-effort compensation will be provided to maintainer from the "Armbian Community Fund"

Criteria for Supported

For an SBC to be considered supported:

• A named individual as "maintainer" along with GitHub ID must be clearly identifed in the Board Configuration File
• A named individual must commit to providing "Best Effort" support for their SBC on the Armbian forums
• Maintainer must participate in the Release Process
• Maintainer must sign-off that device has been tested, is stable, and ready for release during release process.
• Maintainer must have physical access to the SBC they're supporting

Additional Caveats:

• Supported is not applied to a "family" or group of related SBCs. It is per SBC.
• A maintainer can support multiple devices, but must satisfy all requirements above, per SBC.
• Any individual can be a maintainer for a standard support SBC
• Missed released will result in immediate forfeit of "Armbian Supported" status and demotion to CSC status unless Armbian team grants exemption.

 

Armbian team took over what was possible while the remaining boards, which won't get a maintainer by December 1st, will loose support status and will be removed from the download pages.

As you will notice we partially have stock images only and some are even still missing. We would really love to see some nice and shiny artwork there as we might put the grid view as new default setting (no worries, the classic look'n'feel will be still availabe ).

So if you have some graphics designer skills but have no idea about programming you can still contribute to the project by donating a small amount of your time and create some awesome forum images.

How to stop seeding torrents?

• Remove cron job:

• Remove torrents:

  This command will remove all files on your torrent server! If you seed other stuff do a cherry pick.

Armbian provides stable releases every three months. They are driven by CURRENT LTS kernel. Adventurers which likes rolling releases, can check EDGE releases which are using latest daily kernel builds with fresh packages from sid, hirsute or impish userland.

Tough Decisions
 

• Odroid C4/HC4 boot problem has to remain unresolved in CURRENT 5.10.y kernel since fixing it would break Khadas boards. Problem was properly solved in EDGE kernel.
• We had to disable 3D on latest Amlogic boards due to instability
• Leaving behind published Deepin, Enlightenment, Gnome, i3, KDE plasma, Mate, Xmonad desktop due to space constrains and lack of maintenance. These options are still available within the build tool.

Known problems

• XFCE desktop is missing package gvfs-backends and xarchiver
• bullseye doesn’t properly detect locales
• Helios64 eMMC IO errors with CURRENT kernel
• OrangepiZero2 EDGE kernel based image doesn’t boot. Will be fixed in bug fix release.

For those who do automated and/or scripted building take note to adjust it accordingly.

while we will officially only support a few of them but anyone is welcome to join and tweak / support its desktop of choice. We will support you in best possible manner! And this way things starts the voyage to become officially supported one day. Only if you join. We can't take more load.

We support XFCE since early days and that will remain primary desktop since it represent a best combination between functionality, speed and beauty. Second desktop, which we are adding now is Gnome because its clean and most stable among advanced / bulky desktops. It can ran fairly smooth as low as on Allwinner H5 / 1Gb memory, while it runs very well on some RK3399 hardware. In both cases it uses open source 3D acceleration - Lima and Panfrost. New desktop option will be added gradually, but for now:

What about others?

- ASAP. Those are semi manual builds, some are manually tested and it takes a lot of time. On top of that we are having some infrastructure troubles ATM ...

- we still need to fix few minor bugs, before we put on stamp as "supported" even those builds are IMO generally in a better shape then other images on the market

- you can help by testing and enabling specific builds by sending a PR to this file. https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/master/config/targets.conf It will help to get things up faster.

What is ZSH, and Why Should You Use It Instead of Bash?

ZSH, also called the Z shell, is an extended version of the BASH, with plenty of new features, and support for plugins and themes. Since it’s based on the same shell as Bash, ZSH has many of the same features, and switching over is a breeze.
 

So Why Use It?

ZSH has too many features to list here, some just minor improvements to Bash, but here are some of the major ones:

• Automatic cd: Just type the name of the directory
• Recursive path expansion: For example “/u/lo/b” expands to “/usr/local/bin”
• Spelling correction and approximate completion: If you make a minor mistake typing a directory name, ZSH will fix it for you
• Plugin and theme support: ZSH includes many different plugin frameworks
• Plugin and theme support is probably the coolest feature of ZSH and is what we’ll focus on here.
• Can be shipped with Armbian by default

Pros:

• Zsh is Bash-compatible. Existing Bash scripts will work in Zsh, largely unmodified. Everything you already know already applies. You don't have to unlearn anything.
• Zsh has a powerful extension mechanism. It allows zsh to include as builtins features like sockets, line-editing, regular expression engines, and lots of other things. (Take a look at man zshmodules for more examples)
• Command completion is absurdly powerful, and can be extended quite far. Scripts already do a lot in the zsh-completions collection, but a zsh module can go much further to do what shells like Fish do.
• You can easily switch back to Bash in armbian-config

Cons:

• It's bigger than Bash but we tweaked it to run smoothly also on older boards. 
• It will spoil you rotten. Its features are so much more powerful than Bash, you'll never be happy with Bash ever again.

What is Oh-My-ZSH?

Oh-My-Zsh is the most popular plugin framework for ZSH, and it comes with many built-in plugins and themes as well. Oh-My-Zsh has loads of plugins built right in and does its job well. Plugins that we plan to ship by default:

• git-extras
• debian
• tmux
• screen
• history
• extract
• colorize
• web-search
• docker

How to test it on existing builds?

Support for ZSH was already merged into the build system which means its present in self build or nightly images. Currently you still need to choose ZSH or BASH at 1st login. You can test new features on existing Armbian:

This will change all normal users including root on the system from BASH to ZSH. To see effect,  logout and login. First login will be slow, others will be normal speed. Going back from ZSH to BASH:

Remarks: 32bit support is broken in Debian Stretch, no upgrade there. Also this upgrade is needed to bump kernel to 5.10.y

Finally, the time is right to announce we are publishing our initial implementation of these "desktop" features!

Warning!

We are only announcing this here on our own forums for the time being, as this is still early days.  In fact, at this point we are still mainly looking for testers. You should consider this an alpha quality release at this time!

What works so far?

Features we plan to develop works, we are already hunting bugs for months, but they are certainly still present. Remember, we are not looking for bugs that are tied to specific hardware feature, but bugs that are linked to the build process, userland and basic desktop functionality.

In addition, there are more DEs which should be considered very much WIP, in other words, not really fully working (yet), but we designed a system that can have unlimited variants.

Help Wanted!

These changes are wide ranging and touch many parts of the code.  Therefore even if you don't plan on using any "desktop" features, your testing can help to find bugs, even in "server" versions (as eventually this code will be merged with master in matter of weeks).

If you have been looking for some opportunity to help the project by getting involved a bit more, this could be your chance!

Going forward we will be looking for additional desktop maintainers.  Currently the plan is for the Armbian core team to maintain the framework and perhaps settle on 2-3 DE options.  Any which are to be considered in addition to that, will need to come with some commitment to ongoing maintenance by whoever is interested in those additional desktops.

Getting Started

If this is your very first time using the build scripts, start with general instructions. If you are already familiar with the basics of building, some additional detailed instructions pertaining to desktop features can be found here.  You will also need to add:

quite a while ago we started working on a better way to guide users through the way of properly reporting bugs at the correct places and help them avoid common issues the same time. We came up with a form that, depending on users input and conditional logic, leads to the correct place or a dead-end with explanation why specific bugs are not accepted.

A link to this has been added to the documentation, the download page for each board and will pop up when creating a new topic in the bug tracker forums.

We appreciate your feedback and bring issues with the form to our attention. We are also aware that using Google forms is everything but ideal but in my opinion it is a good point to start with. If you know a good way to implement this in WordPress or even have a proof-of-concept handy we'd love to hear from you. Put your thoughts below this topic:

Before you start getting crazy: Bionic on SBC is still supported

A while ago with the release of Ubuntu Focal (and quite some testing beforehand) we decided push building to the new LTS release as main supported host OS. Bionic was marked as deprecated.

Since we ran into first troubles on the old Ubuntu LTS the support to build Armbian on Ubuntu Bionic has now been dropped.

Besides the good and warm feeling and the donator badge a new, exclusivly for donators available dark theme has been added to the forums. There is a preview attached to this posting. Special thanks to @NicoD for providing the background

There is no way for us currently to detect this kind of spamming, without enacting draconian measures of moderation, which we are certainly not going to do. So instead we ask for your help. The only way to really find these is to happen upon them while browsing the forum. If you see one, please click on the little flag at the bottom and a Moderator will take care of it. It only takes 2 seconds, and you can help out in keeping the forums a nice and useful place.

Upgrading your Armbian to v19.11.y

This upgrade is changing kernel branch names and first upgrade is not done via regular apt-upgrade process, but you have to login as root or get super user privileges with sudo su. Than do the following:

Note: upgrade will replace your boot script. In case you made changes, you can find a backup in /usr/share/armbian

Main build system changes

Due to changes in branch names and removal of all legacy kernels < 4 your predefined automatic scripts might need updating. Temporally quick fix is to add

LIB_TAG="v19.08"

to your build config file which by default is:

userpatches/config-default.conf

Then run your script as you did before.

All images were updated. It mainly goes for a bugfix update, cleanup, adding Debian Buster release. Beware that software maturity with Buster is not just there yet (even it was declared stable) and with some applications (like OMV) you will encounter problems. Kernel/BSP wise, Debian Buster is the same, uses Armbian kernel, as our other builds. Most of the builds were briefly tested, but bugs might be hiding somewhere. This is the best what is out there thanks to greater Debian community, those around boards and of course ours which pushes generic Debian/Linux to the sky . Enjoy the summer time.
