I don't know. Usually there are about 150-300 guests. And such a sharp spike, maybe it's a bot attack .....

There are no spikes in the Google analytics which suggest more for some bot activity.

Part of me wanted to set up some simple "wget -> grep -> text file with data" script to run on cron every (15? 5?) minutes and compile the data and then make some nice graph with gnuplot or something.

 

But then I thought, surely @Igor already has some much better site metrics at his disposal. Plus he might not want me downloading the forum page again every x minutes (although I probably do at least this much just doing my normal forum work with several tabs open).
