Earlier this year, I received the Creality Ender-3 S1 Pro 2-in-1 3D printer & laser engraver and in the first part of the review, I showed the package content and how to assemble the system either to use it as a 3D printer or a laser engraver, but didn’t start it at the time. I’ve now had time to play with both laser engraving (less luck with cutting) and 3D printing, so I’ll report my experience in the second part of the review. Creality Ender-3 S1 Pro laser engraving Since in the last part of the review I had the 10W laser module installed on the 3D printer, I decided to start the testing with laser engraving and cutting. Contrary to the TwoTrees TS2 laser engraver …

Description In commit 0aa61abe7 (armbian-audio-config: Massively speed up script) this script was changed to not call amixer for each control, but just once for each card, feeding commands for many controls in one invocation with the --stdin option. In that commit, two errors were introduced: Controls that were intended to be muted were turned on instead. This affects the "CD", "Mic" and "Internal Speaker" controls. This occured because there is a helper shell function whose arguments were renumbered, but the last argument kept the old numbering, keeping it always at the default value of "on", even when it should have been "mute". Controls with a space in their na…

Use multiple consecutive reads in rtw_sdio_read_port() to limit the number of bytes which are copied by the host from the card in one MMC/SDIO transfer. This allows receiving a buffer that's larger than the hosts max_req_size (number of bytes which can be transferred in one MMC/SDIO transfer). As a result of this the skb_over_panic error is gone as the rtw88 driver is now able to receive more than 1536 bytes from the card (either because the incoming packet is larger than that or because multiple packets have been aggregated). Rebuilding the tools you actually touchKernel 7.1 across the tree, a rewritten installer, Imager 2.0, and UEFI ISO images Three rewrites in one cycleMost releases are a long list of small improvements. This one had three larger pieces landing at roughly the same time, and all three touch parts of Armbian that people use directly rather than parts they only read about in changelogs. The installer was rewritten. Armbian Imager reached 2.0. And our CI moved out of the repository it had outgrown into one built for the job. None of these were planned to coincide; they simply reached the point where postponing them again would have cost more than doing them. The installer rewri…

When using directories, the docker images will start generaties files inside these directories, with root privileges. These files cannot be removed by the user, even though he owned the directory. So I decided to use volumes instead, since this alleviate the issue. I'll add a volume management API letter. For the time being, you'll have to rely on docker-compose volume commands to manage them. The manufacturer of Orange Pi boards, Shenzhen Xunlong Software, has formally announced the release of Orange Pi OS based on Android with a Windows 11-styled desktop that we are told can also be switched to macOS look and feel, and offering features typically found in desktop operating systems such as multi-window support. I understand the current release of the operating system works on Orange Pi 800 keyboard PC and the Orange Pi 5 SBC should also be supported once soon. We’re told Orange Pi OS is based on Android 12, but that may be an error since I’m not aware of an Android 12 SDK for the Rockchip RK3399 processor. The company plans to release an Arch Linux Arm version…

rpardini's fight with space-containing PARAMs - early May/'23 Turns out @mhoffrog was right, repeat build params need escaping. This simple rabbit goes down a hole that spans the JSON config-dump output, the pipeline JSON parsing, and the GHA matrix encoding. Phew. pipeline: correctly quote params passed over pure strings (eg in the GHA JSON matrixes) so values with spaces are not mangled bash_declare_parser: parse space-separated single-quoted array values correctly ('THIS=has space' is a single token, not two) aggregation: armbian_utils.parse_env_for_tokens() now actually does what it said on the box "split by whitespace, line breaks, commas, and semicolons"; add a…

Description Add dummy regulators to pinctr dts for orangepione SBC. This will prevent the kernel driver from issuing warnings "supply vcc-xx not found, using dummy regulator" for the dummy regulators added. Documentation summary for feature / change How Has This Been Tested? Initially the dts entries were manually added to a running system using the dts editor in armbian-config to verify that the changes produced the desired result. Then a kernel patch was created, put into a git repository and an image generated from that repository. After installing the image on an orangepione the dtb was examined via the dts editor of armbian-config to confirm the presence of the req…

This week’s Armbian development saw a wide range of improvements and fixes across the project’s build framework, kernel support, and device compatibility. Notable changes include the transition from POSIX to Bash syntax for enhanced script reliability, expanded support for new hardware such as the Norco-EMB-3531 board, and the addition of Vulkan and improved 3D package descriptions. Several device-specific updates were made, including kernel enhancements for sm8250, mainline support for SpacemiT, and fixes for wireless and HDMI functionality on various boards. The team also introduced new features like a cache manager modal in the imager and improved marking for container…

Google released the first Android 13 Developer preview in February, and we know quite a lot about Android 13 including virtualization support, as well as security and privacy updates. But the company has now released Android 13 Beta for TV (aka Android 13 for Android TV) for Google ADT-3 developer kit and the Android Emulator for TV in Android Studio. The beta release allows app developers to test their apps and provide feedback on the latest release before it is released to customer devices. Google does not provide any changelog specific to Android 13 for Android TV, but you’ll find the OS image for ADT-3 and installation instructions on the release page. Mishaal Rahman …

OpenPLC is an open-source, free-to-use Programmable Logic Controller Suite, compliant with the IEC 61131-3 standard, and working with a range of hardware platforms such as Arduino, ESP8266/ESP32, Raspberry Pi SBCs, as well as Windows and Linux machines. When Arduino unveiled the Arduino PLC IDE, we noted the languages defined by the IEC 61131-3 standard were licensed, and the PLC key for the Portenta Machine Control unit sold for $17.60. One reader complained about the high license cost per device, but Massimo Banzi, the co-founder of the Arduino project, replied it was cost-effective for smaller deployments: Actually it’s not that much money compared to the cost of other…

Modernizing SBC Storage: From Qualcomm EDL Flashing to SPI-to-NVMe Boots For years, single-board computer (SBC) storage followed a simple, predictable pattern: flash an image onto a microSD card or eMMC module, plug it in, and turn on the board. However, as modern embedded hardware approaches laptop-grade performance, that legacy approach is starting to break down. The latest quarter of Armbian development highlights a major shift toward modern storage pipelines. By combining Qualcomm Emergency Download (EDL) flashing in Armbian Imager 2.0 with a redesigned installation engine, Armbian is making high-performance hardware far easier to set up. Direct Qualcomm Flashing with…
