  1. We’ve written a couple of articles about Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology in recent weeks notably about ranging sensors such as VL53L8 dToF sensor and Toppan hybrid ToF sensor, but Orbbec has used the technology in their Femto camera line designed to capture 3D objects and scenes. The Femto 3D cameras support a depth-of-field (DoF) from 0.2 to 5 meters, multi-camera synchronization, can be used in complete darkness, and are equipped with a 6-Axis IMU tracking sensor for motion tracking. The ToF cameras should find their way into applications for healthcare, warehousing/shipping, autonomous robotics, augmented reality, and other sectors. Three models are available with the …

  11. Description Switch back to Rockchip DDR binary for DDR initialization in u-boot for Helios64. I believe there is nothing board-specific about this memory initialization issue, but it might be no other Armbian board has this combination of rk3399 and LPDDR4. Else there is something specific about the memory set up on the Helios64 hardware. On the Helios64 random memory errors happens when using the U-Boot DDR intialization code for rk3399. Switching to the rkbin rk33 933MHz v1.25 allows this testcase to run more than once without a memory error: for i in $(seq 1 100);do python3 -c "import pkg_resources" || break;done Could be LPDDR4 specific. 15. Chips may suddenly disappear from the supply chain or get really expensive due to the recurring supply shortage, companies are now designing their PCBs to support multiple chips either selecting drop-in replacements or creating multiple footprints to cater to at least one alternative part. That means one PCB and multiple bill-of-materials are needed to be more resilient to any supply disruption. Radxa did that on the ROCK 3A board for the USB PD circuitry with the ability to use either Injoinic IP2315 or WCH CH224D IC. Those are not pin-to-pin compatible chips, and two circuitry were made for the board requiring two BoMs as it’s not just possible to only replace IP2315 by…

  22. Frore Systems Airjet Mini and Airjet Pro are active cooling chips that are just 2.8mm thick and quietly suck cool air in from the top of the chip before pushing it out the sides with the aim to replace traditional fan-based solutions in ultrabooks, or be integrated into VR headsets and smartphones for improved cooling. Yesterday we saw that cameras could clean themselves with micro-vibrations, and it happens that processors can be cooled with vibrations too as the Airjet chips are comprised of tiny membranes that vibrate at ultrasonic frequencies to generate a flow of air that enters through inlet vents in the top and transformed into high-velocity pulsating jets exiting …

  24. KiCad 7.0.0 open-source EDA software has just been released with a range of new features from custom fonts to 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse integration to opt-in Sentry crash reporting, and many more. It took over three years between KiCad 5.0.0 and KiCad 6.0.0 announcements, but only a little over a year for the release of KiCad 7.0.0. Did KiCad developers acquire superhuman abilities or did AI get involved in the development somehow? Most probably not, and instead they change the release schedule to a yearly one, so we should get annual releases of the open-source EDA suite going forward, with KiCad 8.0.0 to be released in Q1 2024. Some notable changes to KiCad 7.0 include: Cu…

  29. Arduino boards have traditionally been programmed with C-like language in the Arduino IDE, but with the Arduino Lab for MicroPython, Arduino added MicroPython to several official Arduino boards. In the words of the Arduino Team, “not an official product yet, an experimental tool”, but I would not be surprised if it becomes an official IDE eventually as the company collaborated with Damien George, the creator of MicroPython, to port the official the virtual machine to a number of Arduino products, and Murilo Polese to develop the Arduino Lab for MicroPython cross-platform IDE for MicroPython. The IDE looks familiar… Oh yes, I see it now, it’s basically the Arduino IDE, b…

  51. Without this, when mkimage fails (for example because the boot partition is too small), install.log shows an error like: mkimage: Write only 16310208/17794920 bytes, probably no space left on the device But this does not terminate the build, so the compile script shows no error and an image is generated, but it is unbootable. This runs the script with -e, so when mkimage fails, the script fails, which makes update-initramfs fail, which makes the build fail. How Has This Been Tested? It’s not often we come across an Intel Xeon SBC, but that’s just what AAEON EPIC-TGH7 single board computer offers thanks to a choice of Intel Tiger Lake H processors up to the Xeon W-11865MRE octa-core/16-thread processor. So far, we had only written about Tiger Lake H-based COM Express and COM HPC modules from companies such as ADLink, Congatec, and Portwell, and the EPIC-TGH7 is the first proper SBC we’ve seen with the industrial processors. It supports up to 64GB RAM through two SO-DIMM sockets, SATA and NVME storage, offers 2.5GbE and Gigabit Ethernet ports, five video interfaces, eight USB 3.2/2.0 interfaces, and more. 59. Linux 6.0 has just been released by Linus Torvalds: So, as is hopefully clear to everybody, the major version number change is more about me running out of fingers and toes than it is about any big fundamental changes. But of course there’s a lot of various changes in 6.0 – we’ve got over 15k non-merge commits in there in total, after all, and as such 6.0 is one of the bigger releases at least in numbers of commits in a while. The shortlog of changes below is only the last week since 6.0-rc7. A little bit of everything, although the diffstat is dominated by drm (mostly amd new chip support) and networking drivers. And this obviously means that tomorrow I’ll open the merge…

There has been a lot of talk about the Rust programming language in recent times, since it offers about the same level of performance as C programming but helps programmers write more secure code with built-in prevention against buffer overflows for instance. It has gained a lot of traction over the years, and Linux 6.1 will be the first kernel release to include Rust code. Google Research noticed that system security is often treated as a feature that can be added to existing systems either by software …

  66. PICMG has announced that the COM-HPC Mini form factor’s pinout and dimensions definitions were finalized, with the tiny credit card-sized modules able to handle PCIe Gen4 and Gen5 interfaces, of course, depending on whether the selected CPU supports those. The COM-HPC “High-Performance Computing” form factor was created a few years ago due to the lack of interfaces on the COM Express form factor with “only” 440-pins and potential issues to handle PCIe Gen 4 clock speeds and throughputs. So far, we had COM-HPC Client Type modules from 95 x 120mm (Size A) to 160 x 120mm (Size C) and Server Type modules with either 160 x 160mm (Size D) or 200 x 160mm (Size E) dimensions. The…

Our primary focus is on the boards that our vendors assist us with, labelled as platinum support. We apply the same level of service to “supported” boards, but we carry the biggest burden of board maintenance. If we still have time, at the end of the process, we will also evaluate the status of boards that are still in development and those that we have officially deemed as unsupported. We are continuing with the development and testing of our CI! It has been completely rewritten to significantly improve the re…

  97. Power problems are one of the most common causes of instability, boot failures, or random restarts in single board computers (SBCs). Because many modern boards use USB-C connectors for power, it’s important to verify that your power supply is delivering the correct voltage and current before assuming there’s a hardware fault. Check the basicsStart by confirming that your USB-C cable and adapter are rated for your board’s requirements. Most SBCs need 5 V at 3 A (15 W). Some boards, like the Orange Pi 5 or Raspberry Pi 5, may negotiate 9 V or 12 V via USB Power Delivery (PD), depending on their design. If you’re using a phone charger or low-power adapter, it may not provide…
