The Wi-R protocol is a non-radiative near-field communication technology that uses Electro-Quasistatic (EQS) fields for communication enabling the body to be used as a conductor and that consumes up to 100x less energy per bit compared to Bluetooth. In a sense, Wi-R combines wireless and wired communication. Wi-R itself only has a wireless range of 5 to 10cm, but since it also uses the body to which the Wi-R device is attached, the range on the conductor is up to 5 meters. While traditional wireless solutions like Bluetooth create a 5 to 10-meter field around a person, the Wi-R protocol creates a body area network (BAN) that could be used to connect a smartphone to a pace…

Silicon Labs has just announced the tiny BG27 Bluetooth LE and MG27 multiprotocol wireless SoCs designed for small devices, and they will be especially useful in connected health applications, or the so-called Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), as well as wearables, sensors, switches, smart locks, and commercial and LED lighting. Both chips feature a Cortex-M33 core clocked at 76.8 MHz, up to 768KB flash, and up to 64KB RAM, but the BG27 only supports Bluetooth LE, Mesh, and propriety 2.4 GHz connectivity, while the MG27 also adds an 802.15.4 radio for Zigbee, OpenThread, and Matter protocols Silicon Labs BG27 and MG27 specifications: CPU – Arm Cortex-M33 @ 76.8 MHz with …

Description Enabling several minimal images as per user request. We already enabled images on targets where such images might be interesting. They are also coming to all community builds. Why this is useful? Some people prefer or need as images that contains nothing but bare system. Initial root size only at around 0.5Gb!!! (size differs from kernel and user space architecture) Tests was done on very old and slow 32bit device. Only there such measures really means something. Nanopi Neo v1 booted up in less then 20s with all standard services ... (systemd-analyze: Startup finished in 5.052s (kernel) + 14.010s (userspace) = 19.063s) View the full article

This week's work centers on a consolidated uwe5622 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth driver, CI and repository infrastructure changes, and board and toolchain enablement across multiple SoC families. The uwe5622 driver has been relocated to a dedicated repository and unified across kernel versions. Initial commits address a use-after-free in mtty_probe(), resolve 157 -Wmissing-prototypes warnings, correct dev_addr const guards for kernels 5.17–6.18 under clang, and fix sdio_pub_int_init for the newer gpiod int_ap API on GCC 14. The build system now sources the driver from this repository, adds a GitHub Actions test workflow, and refactors the associated DVFS patch and kernel configuration.…

Armbian builds for hundreds of boards. A kernel bump that is clean on one SoC can leave another unbootable and no build log will tell you. So there is a rack, and the rack boots them. Compiling is not evidence. A kernel that builds, packages that install, an image that flashes — none of it proves a board comes back after reboot. Armbian supports a very large number of boards across a dozen vendors and twenty SoC families, maintained largely by volunteers who each own one or two of them. The failure mode that hurts is not a broken build. It is a change that builds perfectly and quietly bricks the boot path on hardware nobody happened to have on their desk that week. The au…

The au…

DevTerm modular, portable Linux terminal initially designed for modules based on Raspberry Pi CM3 form factor, can now work with Raspberry Pi CM4 for extra performance and memory thanks to a $19 adapter. The Devterm was initially launched in 2020 with a 6.8-inch IPS screen, a keyboard with 67 keys, and a battery module, all connected through the ClockworkPi v3.14 carrier board taking a choice of core modules based on Allwinner H6 or Rockchip RK3399 (now supported in Armbian), besides the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 mentioned above. More recently, it also got an Allwinner D1 RISC-V module. The Raspberry Pi CM4 module should bring performance similar to the Rockchip RK33…

Description Add support for RPi5 in our bcm2711 kernel. This is mostly but not entirely based on changes from Raspberry Pi kernel PR 5618. After enabling those options, I noticed that even though hdmi was working, kernel was not able to find the sdcard and usb was also not working. So I had to use diffconfig to compare our configs with the vendor config and enable some more options. Raising the PR so that others can also play with it as well. Meanwhile I will work on getting Trixie Desktop Image running with mesa 23.3-rc5 from experimental repo. As part of that I will split RPi 5 into separate board config until recent version of mesa is made available in current debian …

Amazon has just launched the “all new” Fire TV Cube streaming device with an Amlogic POP1-G octa-core Cortex-A73/A53 processor that we never heard of, but that appears to be almost the same as the Amlogic A311D2 processor that we reviewed in Khadas VIM4 SBC. It’s the last day of the year and the time to look at some of the highlights of 2022, some traffic statistics from CNX Software website, and speculate on what 2023 may bring us. The semiconductors shortage continued in 2022, but things are looking brighter in 2023 with the full reopening of the world mixed with forecasts of difficult economic times that should keep the demand/supply equation in check. On the Arm processor front the biggest news of the year, at least in this corner of the Internet, was the launch of the Rockchip RK3588 octa-core Cortex-A76/A78 processor together with interesting single board computers that we’ll discuss below. Announced last year, the Amlo…

Dear Armbians, It’s been a month since our last newsletter. We hope you are enjoying our new release! Here are the topics we are working on: Infra We are aware that our primary repository management and rsync servers need serious upgrades, as it takes hours and hours to deliver a release. Past week we have enabled two additional servers and several others are waiting for the upgrade. This will further improve time to deliver updates and new images. Documentation We are working on improving the documentation, focusing on the build framework. The current build framework documentation is largely outdated, which poses a challenge for those unfamiliar with the tool. Builds …
