Fix the builddeb script so linux-image upgrades work correctly on fat /boot partitions. Currently the postinst file that is created has the following contents: ... ln -sf vmlinuz-6.0.10-meson64 /boot/Image 2> /dev/null || mv /boot/vmlinuz-6.0.10-meson64 /boot/Image touch /boot/.next mkimage -A arm64 -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x1080000 -e 0x1080000 -n "Linux" -d /boot/vmlinuz-6.0.10-meson64 /boot/uImage > /dev/null 2>&1 exit 0 ... In the first line on a fat filesystem the mv command leaves the system without a file named 'vmlinuz...'. The following mkimage command is looking for the vmlinuz... file that is no longer there and fails. This fix changes t…

Description Enabling several minimal images as per user request. We already enabled images on targets where such images might be interesting. They are also coming to all community builds. Why this is useful? Some people prefer or need as images that contains nothing but bare system. Initial root size only at around 0.5Gb!!! (size differs from kernel and user space architecture) Tests was done on very old and slow 32bit device. Only there such measures really means something. We started the review of GL.inet GL-MT2500A security gateway, aka Brume 2, with an unboxing and teardown, and I’ve now had time to test the router in more detail so I’ll report my experience using the router with OpenVPN and WireGuard VPN, Tor, Adguard Home, and more. In a nutshell, it’s super easy to use, unless your ISP causes troubles, which it did in this case. Brume 2 connection and initial setup I connected the WAN port of the Brume 2 router to 3BB’s modem router (3BB is an ISP in Thailand), the LAN port to my laptop, and finally the USB-C power supply (power draws is 2.3 Watts at idle). Make the two Y/n questions that firstlogin asks behave consistently with each other, and more in line with user expectation: Reject anything that is not Y, y, N, n or . Previously the "Connect via wireless? [Y/n]" question would interpret Y, y and as "yes", and everything else as "no", whereas the "Set user language based on your location? [Y/n]" question would loop until the user selected Y, y, N or n. Make pressing enter equivalent to the default "Y", since that is the capitalized option. Echo back what the user typed. code_saturne is a free, open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software developed primarily by EDF that can be useful to check and optimize the thermal design of your projects. From time to time, we come across hardware platforms that do not perform to their best due to overheating leading to CPU throttling, and over time it may also impact the lifetime of the device. I’ve heard about computational fluid dynamics (CFD) before, but I always assumed the software was prohibitively expensive and Formula 1 even has a cost cap for CFD testing. But it turns out there’s an open-source program to do just that: code_saturne. As a utility company, EDF designed the software t…

Hey, Karl here, and today we are going to review Creality’s CR-Scan Lizard. This device is a 3D scanner that uses the structured light process to 3D scan. Instead of visible light, it uses non-visible light. I have no idea where lizards come into play but here we are. I have been waiting for quite some time for a lower-cost consumer 3D scanner. I attempted a DIY structured light scanner a long time ago, with some success…..but the time it took was unacceptable. It took me hours to set up perfectly and many more cleaning up point clouds and aligning even for a small scan. Leading me to give up on the project. Arduino has recently announced the Opta micro PLC with industrial IoT capabilities adding yet another solution to the Arduino Pro family. Arduino used to focus on the hobbyist crowd, but with the launch of the Arduino Pro family in 2020 starting with the Portenta H7 board, the company switched its main focus to the more profitable enterprise market. Since then they’ve launched several other boards designed in-house, and last year started collaborating with the introduction of the Arduino WisGate Edge LoRaWAN gateways based on RAKwireless hardware. The Arduino Opta is another one of those collaborations as it was designed together with Finder, who calls their devices PLR (…

CNX Software’s Giveaway Week 2022 has just ended, and it’s time to announce the winners. Just like last year, some companies added to the review samples I offered with Rakwireless and ELECFREAKS offering a LoRaWAN devkit and an educational robot respectively. If you check out the photo of the items given away below you’ll find quite more than seven because the SONOFF NSPanel kit includes four Zigbee modules, and more importantly, we also organized a parallel giveaway week on CNX Software Thailand with small boards such as the Raspberry Pi Zero W or XIAO BLE. We had eight winners on CNX Software: NanoPi R5S gateway – Ingmar, GERMANY e-con Systems e-CAM20_CURB camera – John…

The FNIRSI 1013D is a dual-channel flat-panel oscilloscope with a rich set of features. It is cost-effective and useful to people in the maintenance and R&D industries. Although it has been on the market for a few years, I purchased one, and I decided to introduce it and disassemble it to check out the hardware design. FNIRSI describes its oscilloscope as “small and portable”, so I assume it should include a lithium battery, a TFT LCD screen, a processor to handle the display, and another chip to process the digital signals. Let’s take it apart first to find out. FNIRSI 1013D oscilloscope unboxing FNIRSI 1013D package content: 1x FNIRSI 1013D oscilloscope 2x 100MHz ma…

Description Kernel config for rockchip64 for kernel 6.0 got a sudden overhaul I don't know it was wanted or not. That caused the addition of a huge number of unneeded modules (Parallel ATA, Intel enterprise things, PCI drivers, NAND support and drivers, and other crap) that causes a grow in compressed modules size of 20 megabytes and 2 megabyte more on the kernel image plus several other insane settings, like CMA set to 384 megabytes. This PR restores the same "shape" of the previous kernel config and fixes ssv6051 and uwe5622 patches to compile without errors with v6.0. How Has This Been Tested? [x] kernel deb packages have been compiled, verified that final size is i…

We wrote about the low-cost T8-Pro Celeron N5095 mini PC with three HDMI outputs and two Gigabit Ethernet ports last week, but if you’d prefer a model with 2.5GbE networking instead, the Partaker J6412 might be a better, albeit costlier option, with still three displays support (2xDP, 1xHDMI), and three 2.5GbE ports. As its name implies, the fanless mini PC/network appliance is powered by an Intel Celeron J6412 Elkhart Lake processor, coupled with up to 16GB DDR4 memory and a 512GB SSD, and it features six USB ports, plus an RS232 COM port. Espressif Systems has just announced the Matter-compatible ESP-ZeroCode modules with Wi-Fi and/or Thread (802.15.4) wireless connectivity that are designed as plug-and-play solutions for LED lights, outlets, switches, dimmers, relays, fans, and other lighting and electrical devices. I was only recently introduced to no-code programming in a recent post by Ninephon Kongangkab explaining how to use SenseCraft firmware for no-code programming on Wio Terminal. Basically, there’s no need to know Arduino, MicroPython, or any programming language, as the user just has to press a few buttons to configure an IoT device to meet his/her requirements. With the ESP-ZeroCode modules, E…

Electronic components have shrunk a lot over the year, but batteries are usually one of the larger items in a design. ITEN changes that with solid state lithium-ion micro-batteries in the shape of SMD components with up to 100 µAh capacity. This is clearly not going to power your next smartphone, but ITEM micro-batteries could be found in ultra-low-power sensors potentially replacing non-rechargeable coin cell batteries with much higher capacities (e,g. 100 mAh). ITEN says their solid-state micro-batteries are superior to coin cell batteries because those are polluting, difficult to assemble on PCB, costly to recycle and require periodic maintenance once a battery is de…

Let’s end Giveaway Week 2022 with a bang, and more exactly a rather powerful Rockchip RK3588 mini PC: Mekotronics R58 (mini). The device comes with 8GB RAM and 64GB flash storage, two 8K capable HDMI 2.0 output ports, one DisplayPort output, one HDMI input, Gigabit Ethernet and WiFI 6 connectivity, as well as a few USB 3.0/2.0 ports, plus support for a SATA drive. I reviewed the Rockchip RK3588 mini PC with Android 12 last July, and I was impressed by the CPU and GPU performance, 4K video playback capabilities, except for AV1 which was not stable at the time, and support for HDMI audio passthrough. Android 12 was quite stable at that early stage as well. Some downsides …

The mtd-utils package provides NAND and SPI flash capabilities for mainline kernel /dev/mtdX devices. This will help on board setup from SD card boot. closes #4427 Description The mtd-utils package provides tools for flashing the boards NAND and/or SPI flash chips. In the meanwhile most NAND and SPI chips are supported by mainline kernel MTD drivers. Boards like Cubietruck or Odroid M1 can boot from NAND or SPI with mainline U-Boot. The according flash chips can be flashed with the mtd-utils tools from the mainline kernel booted OS after an initial Armbian SD card boot. This simplifies board setup or boards boot loader update to enable booting from the on board soldered…
