Some ultra-compact 4G LTE wireless routers housed in what looks like a largish USB dongle are based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 401 (MSM8916) quad-core Cortex-A53 processor and have been hacked to run Debian 11 with Linux 5.15 instead of the pre-loaded Android OS. Soon after Extrowerk had purchased a ~$20 “4G LTE WiFi modem” USB dongle, he noticed it would show as “Android” when connected to his PC. It also turned out that Chinese hacker HandsomeYingYan had already done some work on the device modding the lk2nd bootloader and the Linux kernel for the OpenStick project for “mainline Linux on msm8916-based 4G USB modem”, and documented his work (in Chinese) to run Debian 11 on t…

Description There is a drawback to configuring audio routing using asound.state. Although you can specify the device of the axg-sound card via commands to output sound to either HDMI or the internal speaker, in a desktop environment, there is only one analog output (defaulting to HDMI). This is because the device actually has only one sound card. By using ALSA UCM to manage sound instances and audio routing, you can freely choose between HDMI or the built-in speaker output in a desktop environment. This is because PipeWire/WirePlumber will parse ALSA UCM and create sinks. How Has This Been Tested? build image boot form usb drive test sound in CLI and DE Checklist: …

China-developed Ubuntu Kylin 20.04 is now supporting RISC-V architecture with an image for HiFive Unmatched mini-ITX motherboard, and work will be done on an unnamed Starfive SBC that should be the VisionFive board with a GPUless JH7100 dual-core RISC-V SoC or an upgraded version with JH7110 SoC featuring an Imagination IMG BXE-4-32 GPU. You may have read recent reports about China asking government entities, including state-owned enterprises (SOE), to replace foreign hardware and software within a two-year period. So that means avoiding systems based on Intel and AMD processors, so working on RISC-V open architecture makes perfect sense, since over time, Chinese manufact…

Description A user from the forum reports that a new rockchip rk3288-based board Tinkerboard S R2.0 has no wifi (see discussion here). After some talk, it seems that this board revision uses a Realtek rtl8723ds chip, whereas the R1.01 board uses rtl8723bs. This PR enabled the rtl8723ds wifi module that curiously was previously enabled in kernel 5.15 but somehow has been disabled in the advancement to 6.1. Current and edge kernel on rockchip family are both on 6.1 right now. The board actually is in a limbo where probably much of the design is shared with regular Tinkerboard/S, but other differences are unknown. Enabling a kernel module to let wifi work is a relatively s…

Description We are using unudhcpd from pmos for usb gadget network dhcp server. But this package is not upstreamed to debian, and it's the only package we use for qcom abl that is not upstreamed, so replace it with dnsmasq. Difference between unudhcpd and dnsmasq: 1, unudhcpd is a very simple dhcp server which only provides one ip address to the client. While dnsmasq will provide different ip address on every usb gadget network connect because the mac address of usb gadget network client always changes. 2, When usbgadget network is disabled by command systemctl status usbgadget-rndis.service, dnsmasq will get stopped. If dnsmasq is not stopped, client won't get address …

Description Please include a summary of the change and which issue is fixed. Please also include relevant motivation and context. List any dependencies that are required for this change. TI maintains its own repository of debian packages here. This PR adds this repository in TI images by-default through a new extension. So when the user performs apt update, apt install etc in Armbian images for TI boards, even TI's packages can be installed. Further, the PR also installs a few of TI's packages by-default in its images. Additionally: it also changes TI's U-boot link from git.ti.com to Github. How Has This Been Tested? Please describe the tests that you ran to verify yo…

Developed by Zed (M-Abozaid), the esp32-c3-adblock is an open-source, Pi-hole-style DNS ad blocker that runs on a $2 ESP32-C3 microcontroller board/module without requiring PSRAM. It blocks ads and tracking domains across devices on a home or small office network by filtering DNS requests. Instead of storing domain strings in RAM, the project stores them as sorted 40-bit FNV-1a hashes in flash memory and uses binary search to check DNS requests. When a UDP DNS query comes in, the C++ firmware extracts the domain, hashes it (including parent suffixes), and performs a binary search against the flash hash table. If the domain is on the blocklist, the ESP32-C3 returns 0.0.0.0…

Raspberry Pi Trading announced the Raspberry Pi Pico W board basically based on the same design as the original Raspberry Pi Pico board with RP2040 dual-core Cortex-M0+ microcontroller but adding a wireless module with WiFi 4 and Bluetooth LE 5.2, although the latter is not enabled on the board at this time. The company sent me a sample for review/evaluation, and I’ll focus on the WiFi part since the Raspberry Pi Pico W supports the same MicroPython and C/C++ SDKs as for the Raspberry Pi Pico board plus additional APIs for wireless connectivity. Raspberry Pi Pico W unboxing The board I received was cut from a 480-unit reel, and I also got a one-meter long micro USB to USB…

Description These two kernel features are required for the serial console to be usable in early userspace of an Allwinner H6 based board - ie, the init process. The debian initramfs loads these modules which is fine when things go well, but you won't get any logs from the init script which is problematic for debugging and/or customizing it. This made debugging very challenging as I had no way to get output from the board after the kernel had handed control to init. After this change, the serial console is available and functional by the time init runs, and any logs from init will be output as expected. Note: I've put these changes into the "next" config, but my testing…

Realtek RTD1319D is the first set-top box processor to support H.266 (aka Versatile Video Coding) video compression standard. The new SoC also provides a GPU with 10-bit graphics, support for multiple Conditional Access Systems (CAS), and HDMI 2.1a video output capable of up to 4Kp60 with HDR. One would have thought the royalty-free AV1 video codec might have killed licensed codecs such as H.266, but it’s clearly not the case, since Realtek decided to launch the RTD1319D processor with the new codec, and the primary reason may be because the H.266/VCC codec was added to the DVB specification last February for both 4K (3840×2160) and 8K (7680×4320) resolutions. Realtek RTD…

The Green Metrics Tool (GMT) is an open-source framework that allows the measurement, comparison, and optimization of the energy consumption of software with the goal of empowering both software engineers and users to make educated decisions about libraries, code snippets, and software in order to save energy along with carbon emissions. While the firmware of battery-powered embedded devices and the OS running on your smartphone are typically optimized for low power consumption in order to extend the battery life, the same can not be said of most software running on SBCs, desktop computers, and servers. But there are still benefits of having power-optimized programs on th…

Description I'm sorry, I have created a monster 🧌 But this happens when you create a monster by embedding dependency versions inside shell script files 😅 This workflow is carefully crafted though and works surprisingly well imo :) Some of our scripts download tools from a repo. These can't be bumped by dependabot, so this workflow is a self-created dependabot to bump versions of those tools to stay up-to-date. This workflow only creates a PR if the version was actually updated. Tools currently supported: Shellcheck (in 2 different files) Shellfmt oci-oras Bat This will only run once a month since the tools we use are usually not updated frequently. Maybe every two …

Rack Robotics’ Powercore is an Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) kit that converts your existing 3D printer (or CNC router) into a machine capable of cutting high-precision and detailed metal parts. We’ve already seen 2-in-1 3D printers and laser engravers such as the Creality Ender 3 S1 Pro, but while this type of machine can usually cut plywood or engrave stainless steel, the laser is not powerful enough to cut through aluminum. The Powercore EDM kit changes that by enabling the cutting of aluminum parts up to 4mm thick, although aluminum sheets that are 1mm or thinner are recommended. But before we get into Powercore details, what is Electrical Discharge Machining e…
