  3. Description This change includes kernel patches to provide the following overlays when using armbian-config on the Orange Pi Zero 2 and Orange Pi Zero 3 boards. I2C IR USB OTG SPI UART These boards share very similar SOCs (RH616 / RH618), and the existing configuration that was also shared with the bigtreetech board did not function correctly for the Orange Pi Zero 2/3 boards, so the Zero 2/3 board overlay configuration was split out into its own files, and the board configurations updated to reference the new overlays. Note: The patches for these overlays have been added to the 6.1, 6.6 (current), and 6.7 (edge) patch directories but it appears the 6.1 code may not b…

  4. Armbian's next release boots the FriendlyElec NanoPi M5 end-to-end from UFS on a mainline U-Boot, with no proprietary recovery image in the loop. It is the first RK3576 board in the catalogue to reach this state, and the integration pattern paves the way for the others. UFS, the storage class that replaced eMMC in phones, is packet-based and full-duplex with command queuing. The practical gain over an SD card shows up in random I/O, in latency under concurrent load, and in write endurance that holds up over years of deployment. FriendlyElec ships UFS on the M5 because the RK3576 has a native UFS controller, a sensible choice for any board destined for kiosks, robots, or i…

  5. We’ve seen several hardware devices based on Rockchip RK3566 AIoT SoC that do not make use of the key features of the processor. But QNAP TS-133 1-bay NAS is different, since it relies on the native SATA and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces for network storage, and the built-in NPU is leveraged to accelerate object and face recognition by up to 6 times. The NAS comes with 2GB of RAM, 4GB of storage for QTS 5.0 Linux operating system, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, and the company promotes it as a “personal private cloud & home multimedia center”. QNAP TS-133 specifications: SoC – Rockchip RK3566 quad-core Cortex-A55 processor @ 1.8 GHz with Arm Mali-G52 EE GPU, 0.8 TOPS NPU/AI…

  11. JeVois-Pro tiny AI camera was introduced last year with an Amlogic A311D processor with a built-in 5 TOPS NPU, and support for an Intel Myriad X or Google Edge TPU M.2 card all that in a compact 50x50x45 mm box. The company has now managed to get hold of some M.2 A+E 2230 Hailo-8 modules delivering up to 26 TOPS of AI performance and is selling for JeVois-Pro ultra-compact deep learning camera with the Hailo-8 accelerator for $599 delivering up to 31 TOPS once we include the built-in 5 TOPS NPU. I won’t go through the full specifications again, but in a nutshell, that’s a camera designed for robotics projects, powered by an Amlogic A311D hexa-core Cortex-A73/A53 process…

  14. Description Most of Realtek drivers have a bug: P2P IE not passed to AP beacon. This causes problems, when P2P-GO looks like a regular AP. All P2P capable devices can't see my P2P-GO in the list. I found a driver where P2P-GO works fine (according to user reviews): https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au And found these differences. After I backported these changes my P2P-GO works fine. Also this changes is totally safe, because affects only P2P-related code This patch contains my patches to the original driver repo: jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux#87 jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux#88 But the owner is too busy to review that :( How Has This Been Tested? 17. I was informed about the “CM4 IO Computer” based on the official Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 IO board housing in a metal enclosure along with the Raspberry Pi CM4 module. I initially thought it was new, but it’s been out at least since 2021. Nevertheless, it turns out there are at least two of this type of metal enclosures for the CM4 IO board, and when buying full systems, they may provide a way to source Raspberry Pi CM4 system-on-modules since individual modules are so hard to purchase if you are not a company with some minimum monthly production volume. As a development platform, the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 IO board is not optimized for cost or size, but there…

  25. In my initial commit I assumed CONFIG_USE_PREBOOT=y was enabled by default. I was wrong. As reported by MicroLinux (Salva) on DISCORD the unit was still having issues booting. I sent him a patch I use which enables preboot and he reported back that "It boots fine now". NOTES: The patch he tested also had boot logo support enabled. In my testing boot logo support is not required. If for some reason in the future there are still eMMC boot issues, than maybe adding a slight delay "sleep 2" to preboot would suffice. https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/5858 Checklist: [ ] My code follows the style guidelines of this project [ ] I have performed a self-review of my own c…

  27. http://blog.armbian.com/content/images/2026/01/introducing-armbian-imager.pngWe all know that feeling. You have a new Single Board Computer (SBC) in your hands, ready to be transformed into a home server, a media center, or a testing lab. The excitement is high until you hit the first roadblock: installation. Which image is right for this exact model? Which kernel should I choose? Did I download the correct variant, or will I end up with a system that won't boot? For years, this process has been a "guessing game" involving web searches, manual downloads, and the constant fear of causing damage with the terminal. It is time to end this frustration.Today, we are proud to p…

The “Mainboard Terminal” is a retro-style computer with a round display powered by the mainboard found in Framework modular laptop. The computer has been tested to work with Ubuntu 22.04 out of the box with just a few configuration tweaks for the display, but other operating systems should also work considering the mainboard is based on an Intel Core i5-1135G7, i7-1165G7, or i7-1185G7 Tiger Lake processor. 37. Sparkfun has launched a Satellite Transceiver Kit based on the Swarm M138 satellite and GNSS modem that allows low-bitrate two-way connectivity for IoT projects anywhere on earth. Remote IoT applications have benefited from LPWAN standards such as LoRaWAN and NB-IoT, but in some extreme cases coverage may still be challenging, so satellite communication may be the only practical option. It used to be really expensive, but Swarm makes this more affordable, and companies like SigFox and Semtech also have (or had?) plans to use low-earth orbit satellites for their respective LPWAN technologies. 38. Description All RTL drivers have interesting working mode: -DCONFIG_CONCURRENT_MODE With this mode we have two or three interfaces: wlan0, wlan1 and wlan2 This useful, when we need both STA and AP/P2P-GO on one wifi card. But wlan1 is not working in the 8189FS driver. We can create AP/P2P-GO on wlan1, and it is shown on any STA, but can't receive any RX packets. At the same time, wlan2 always works fine! That is mysterious! But after a few investigations, I found the reason: wlan0 and wlan1 have the same MAC! :) For example: wlan0 xx:xx:xx:xx:a5:8d wlan1 xx:xx:xx:xx:a5:8d wlan2 xx:xx:xx:xx:a1:8d Originally, MAC changes only for if2 and later interfaces. This looks lik…

  60. Armbian 22.11 has just been released with three new SBCs, support for 64-bit RISC-V UEFI, a new ultra-minimal image optimized for software development, and various improvements. Armbian was born as a framework to build better OS images, usually Debian or Ubuntu, for Arm-based single board computers from Orange Pi, Hardkernel (ODROID), FriendlyElec, Banana Pi, and others, but now with the release of Armbian 22.11, support for the RISC-V architecture has started since the system can now generate 64-bit RISC-V UEFI images. Some other highlights of Armbian 22.11 include: Added support for Banana Pi BPI-M5 (Amlogic S905X3), ODROID-M1 (Rockchip RK3568), and Rock Pi 4C Plus (Roc…

  72. Why thermal management is non-negotiable for modern SBCsBy Michael Robinson As Western Europe endures severe summer conditions with climate monitors at the Copernicus Climate Change Service reporting unprecedented regional heatwaves and extreme highs stretching across the continent ambient indoor conditions are testing the limits of self-hosted edge hardware. In unconditioned workspaces, home server racks, and industrial enclosures, rising ambient air temperatures erode the thermal headroom that single-board computers (SBCs) rely on. Modern System-on-Chips (SoCs) such as the Rockchip RK3588, Allwinner, and Broadcom platforms integrate high-performance CPUs, GPUs, and neur…

  79. Qualcomm QCX216 LTE IoT modem was announced at the end of last year as one of the first solutions supporting the new CAT1.bis standard enabling smaller, simpler, and cheaper modules with a single antenna design. This chip also integrates a WiFi scanner exclusively used for indoor positioning. Cavli Wireless C16QS CAT1.bis is one of the first cellular IoT modules based on the Qualcomm QCX216, and we now have a clearer idea of what “cheaper” means since the company says it will sell those for less than $5 to OEMs, although that price is likely in very high quantities, possibly 100k+ or one million pieces.
