Why thermal management is non-negotiable for modern SBCsBy Michael Robinson As Western Europe endures severe summer conditions with climate monitors at the Copernicus Climate Change Service reporting unprecedented regional heatwaves and extreme highs stretching across the continent ambient indoor conditions are testing the limits of self-hosted edge hardware. In unconditioned workspaces, home server racks, and industrial enclosures, rising ambient air temperatures erode the thermal headroom that single-board computers (SBCs) rely on. Modern System-on-Chips (SoCs) such as the Rockchip RK3588, Allwinner, and Broadcom platforms integrate high-performance CPUs, GPUs, and neur…

Is RISC-X next? Bao Yungang, a professor and scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the secretary-general of the China RISC-V Alliance, has suggested RISC-V related standard specifications can be bifurcated into a new RISC-X standard independently developed in China for the “Belt and Road” countries. The world has become more complicated with new sanctions imposed nearly every week, and those include not only primary sanctions but also secondary sanctions where non-sanctioned countries engaged in business or partnership with sanctioned countries may be penalized too. This has been around for years, for example, I had to sign a document in 2019 saying I would not…

Innodisk, better known for its industrial storage solutions and embedded peripherals, has recently announced a shift towards the AI industry, and the first products for this market are three USB 2.0 camera modules with 1920×1080 resolution. All three camera modules are fixed focus. Innodisk EV2U-RMR2 offers HDR support, the EV2U-SGR1 is more compact, offers wider angles, and is optimized for low light conditions, while the EV2U-RMR1 supports HDR in a longer, but much thinner and narrower form factor and is equipped with an M5 lens, instead of an M12 lens for the other models. Description After today's complete stall of primary Ubuntu infrastructure I switched to mirrors in order to rebuild caches. First problem is that often mirrors for amd64 and others are placed on different locations. This part is covered but it fails for riscv64 architecture. In order to cover that too, its better to have more generic variable CUSTOM_UBUNTU_MIRROR_PORTS and have everything that is not amd64 there. By quick research - if mirror hosts arm64 it also hosts risv64 and vice versa. Second problem - if caches are re-generated with 3rd party mirrors, release lists remain with those values. How to approach to that problem? We want that - at least our builds - are a…

We’ve just written about the Notkia phone repurposing Nokia 168x phones with a new PCB featuring an Ingenic X1000E MIPS processor running mainline Linux, but it turns out the developer (Reimu NotMoe, CTO of SudoMaker) has also designed the X1501 Pico SoM, a tiny 16×16 system-on-module equipped with Ingenic X1501 MIPS system-in-package (SiP). The module can be that small because the single-core 1GHz Ingenic 1501 SiP embeds 8MB LPDDR, as well as apparently a 16Mbit NOR flash that stores stripped-down versions of U-boot and the Linux kernel, plus a minimal, busybox-based rootfs. Description Rockchip has released legacy kernel 5.10 supporting rk3568, and friendlyarm has been using it on nanopi5: https://github.com/friendlyarm/kernel-rockchip/tree/nanopi5-v5.10.y_opt/. I did tried the legacy kernel that rk3588 uses on rk3568 board but failed to boot with pcie devices. So although this friendlyarm kernel is mostly the same as the legacy kernel rk3588 uses, it is still the best supported 5.10 kernel for rk3568. Since we have patch board-rock3a-Add-DT-link-for-backward-compatibility.patch, we can use the default device tree file rockchip/rk3568-rock-3a.dtb same as the edge kernel. Device tree file is from radxa's legacy 4.19 kernel repo modified wit…

Dear Armbian Community, We have some exciting updates to share with you! Firstly, we are thrilled to announce that we have successfully raised 5000 EUR for upgrading our CI servers. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of you who participated in this fundraiser and for your continued support. Despite this success, our project still remains underfinanced, and we rely on your support to keep Armbian going. We also have some technical updates to share. FriendlyElec has sent us a sample of the NanoPi R6C, another RK3588S board that’s worth checking out. It comes with an M.2 slot and one less NIC compared to the R6S variant, and Armbian is available for bot…

Description Fix incorrect data read sometimes in last 4kb of compressed files on btrfs. In my case only last 2560 bytes of dtb file was broken, so the only issue was warnings in dmesg on boot. Well, last 2560 of vmlinuz was also broken, but fortunately there was only '\0' bytes, so system was functional and this problem was unnoticed. Arduino boards have traditionally been programmed with C-like language in the Arduino IDE, but with the Arduino Lab for MicroPython, Arduino added MicroPython to several official Arduino boards. In the words of the Arduino Team, “not an official product yet, an experimental tool”, but I would not be surprised if it becomes an official IDE eventually as the company collaborated with Damien George, the creator of MicroPython, to port the official the virtual machine to a number of Arduino products, and Murilo Polese to develop the Arduino Lab for MicroPython cross-platform IDE for MicroPython. The IDE looks familiar… Oh yes, I see it now, it’s basically the Arduino IDE, b…

This week's cycle emphasizes broad U-Boot modernization, new board and SoC enablement, and kernel and wireless driver consolidation. A large-scale U-Boot bump moves sunxi 32-bit and 64-bit targets from v2024.01 to v2026.07-rc4, with follow-on updates for self-pinned H616/H618 boards (Zero2W, Zero3, Longan Pi 3H), Mixtile Edge2, NanoPi R5S (now patch-less), and the Youyeetoo YY3588 switching to mainline v2026.04. The imx6 line (UDOO, Cubox-i) was modernized to U-Boot v2026.07 with legacy 6.12, current 6.18, and edge 7.1 kernels. Related toolchain work fixes ODROID-C1, ODROID-XU4, Recore, and X96Q builds under Trixie's GCC 14, and resolves errexit failures on Rockchip SPI b…

Since you can’t always rely on single board computer (SBC) vendors to provide a case to match your needs, some went the DIY route. William Tarreau designed some laser-cut enclosures with Inkscape for various SBCs, while hominoids went a step further by developing the “SBC Case Builder” tool to automatically generate various types of 3D printable enclosures using OpenSCAD. William designed five similar enclosures for Khadas VIM3/VIM3L, FriendlyELEC NanoPi Fire3, SolidRun Clearfog Base networking SBC, Libre Computer AML-S805X-AC (aka “La Frite”), and AAEON UP Board. All cases are available in Inkscape SVG format, and William accepts contributions for other boards. You’ll ne…
