Noobie interested in learning the simple basics of how single board computers are built? While I have a Orange Pi, have bought a cheap China made Ardunio, with header and USB cable with delivery for under 3 quid ( mad how they do these pieces 😀) and just starting to learn as a maker. I want to learn more basics about how these SBC board work, are built, but I am not technically trained. Years ago I could put a Windows machine together from boards, parts and install operating system. So does anyone know a good forum to ask questions and read up on SBC boards in easy to understand English language. I would love to know how they design the GPIO and connec…

Yet another crowd funding hopeful MiQi is a $35 single-board computer with Rockchip RK3288 Looking for a credit card-sized computer with a quad-core, ARM-based processor and only have $35 to spend? You could opt for the Raspberry Pi 3. But another option is on the way. The MiQi is the same size and price as a Raspberry Pi 3, but this little single-board computer/developer board features a Rockchip processor, up to 32GB of built-in storage, Gigabit Ethernet, and a few other features that help set it apart. http://liliputing.com/2016/04/miqi-is-a-35-single-board-computer-with-rockchip-rk3288.html

I was reading the Orange Pi forum and someone in a topic conversation asked why not use a USB for power to a Orange Pi board. I am not smart enough to know why but did find a good explanation of USB online when searchingthe internet. Hope Armbian don't mind me sharing it here as I think it is informative for other novices like me and helps understand USB. http://www.usbmadesimple.co.uk/index.html

I made a funny project for trying to use the ARM single board as the USB disk or cdrom. I did a lot of optimizations for the size and speed. Releases: https://github.com/usboot/USBootPi/releases USBootPi supports NanoPi M1. It also supports OrangePi One/PC but we need more USB cables(one for power, another one for OTG). Sorry, there is no the English readme now.

I think this is probably something for Thomas, but it's a general question. I'm totally confused (old too which doesn't help) as to which board to get for different jobs. I have an RPi B (256) running. Dietpi as a DLNA and samba sever. Slow but effective. An RPi 3 for general work and tinkering since it's supported quite well and a Orange PI PC which is how I got here... Wow, what a great piece of work you have all done. Igor and Thomas I salute you both! Your knowledge and explanations make me sit in awe. Last time I soldered something in anger it was a quad CMOS NAND and it wasn't cheap either! So, is there a general (noobs) guide to which boards are good for "…

I'm looking for experience / ideas around an update system. I could pull source from GitHub. I could package up zips, pull them with wget, unzip and overwrite files in the file system with the contents of the zip. Maybe include a script_pre.sh and script_post.sh to run before and after the file copy/replace routine. Any other ideas, suggestions, frameworks?

When launching ddd in Armbian 4.5.1, the prompt isn't set properly and the terminal operation inside ddd isn't right. Launching gdb by itself works OK. When I try to load my executable for debugging, I get You can't do that when your target is `None' When I exit ddd, it complains that gdb is still busy. Anyone else seeing this? Why would ddd running natively under Armbian need to know its target when it doesn't need that anywhere else where its used natively? Chris

Can anyone recomend any displays to be used with these boards? Current options i have are "modified keychain / photoframe" attached to usb bus and or standard HDMI devices im thinking along the lines of an LVDS displayor something driven from the GPIO pins, has anyone any experience with this or am i alone in the dark? Links would be good as this may also benefit others. EDIT : scratch that for the Opi-One, its a camera connector.. will stick with the hacked photoframe idea

There are many people who tend to use old phone chargers on there systems and wonder why things become problematic after a good while of usage. My recommendations to people who have this issue are the following 1 - if you are a *SERIOUS* modder or electronics engineer you will know all about bench power supplies and there benefits. 2 - for others who aren't in this category. I would like to share with you my preferred method to deliver power to dev boards. I utilse these shown in the link below. I have found these type to be incredibly stable after 18 months of running one nonstop on a live system i can happily describe them as rock solid and superbly over…

Hello all And firstly I would like to congratulate you and thank you for a cracking little distro. I recently purchased an OrangePi-One amid all the hype of the Pi-Zero to give the Opi a try out. after having tried the images available on the manufacturers site and learning there shortcomings I resolved to build my own image. I was pointed to your site by a member over at http://forum.doozan.com and I must say I am blown away by what you have achieved and distribute!!! You have saved me the pain of building my own OS by applying all the relevant patches. I will be testing your images out for my own needs and should I be able to make any contribution over and abov…

Just a small post about how to connect the PL2303HX RS-232 adaptor cable and the Real Time Clock. Do not trust the Banana pi photos as the I2C bus in the Lamobo/Banana PI R1 is inverted. As they say a picture is better than a thousand words. Often the online Banana PI/Lamobo PI diagrams can be confusing, and do not even try to guide yourself by Banana PI pinouts / photos of placement of hardware products/extensions. I will reiterate again, as this can be a source of confusion, the Banana PI is a rebranded Lamobo product, and the GPIO bus is different/rotated 180º. To scan the GPIO: $sudo i2cdetect -l i2c-0 i2c mv64xxx_i2c adapter I2C…

Hi, First of all I love the Armbian distro on Orange Pi / H3. It's the best out there and what was missing from the beginning. Awesome job. Quick question: is there any reason why Armbian doesn't have Avahi preinstalled by default ? Of course there's no pb adding it afterward but it would be pretty convenient when working with a headless setup. Just curious, Thanks, Richard

Hi, I have heard in a podcast about: fatrace “file access traceâ€, not “fat race†fatrace: report system wide file access events Part of our efforts to reduce power consumption is to identify processes which keep waking up the disk even when the computer is idle. This already resulted in a few bug reports (and some fixes, too), but we only really just began with this. I cannot find it in the repositories of my: Armbian 4.2 3.4.108-banana apt-cache search fatrace apt-cache show fatrace I was wondering if only I am interested in it or if it would be interesting to add it to the repository ? Cheers …

Are clusters able to do anything useful yet? I'm vaguely aware of open stack and I know that googles server farms are full of consumer PCs all networked together and even people making RasPi clusters of varying sizes, but are they any good for normal uses? For example if I bought 10 OPi PC's and stuck them in a case with an Ethernet switch and a hard drive could I build Armbian really really quickly (typing make -j40 would be nice ;-) or would it ultimately just get bogged down and do nothing?

Is it worth starting an Armbian wiki? It seems that for questions such as how do I write the raw file to an SD card, how do I disable LEDs on my whicheverPi, why doesn't my orange pi pc boot this work in progress image and so forth could be answered there. Hopefully it would reduce the Forum traffic for such things, but also when they do pop up a simple one line response with the wiki link is all that's required. I realise that there is the Armbian documentation, which is great, but only really covers how to use Armbian to build images. Equally there is gold mine of information in the forum, but it's sometimes buried a few pages deep or only comes to the surface…

Hi guys, After trying multiple things and not getting a satisfying result, I decided to just ask: What is best device to use as a low power torrent downloader? I tried with a raspberry pi 2, but kept getting huge fluctuations in speed, as soon as it had to write to usb (on an expensive high speed usb 3 stick). I googled and googled, and came across the orange pi, which had a more powerfull soc, and didn't have the limitation of using a single usb hub that is shared for ethernet+storage. The boards (bought a PC and a one) finally arrived, but they disappoint. Using armbian, real world average speed seems to be even lower than the rpi2. I must admit I used a …

Tested with a few drives, and different operating systems. Also a couple power supplies. The harddrive runs extra hot 107F on the outside for the last one I measured myself. It dies during heavy loads. a simple fsck will kill it. But put it in my main computer and I can write /dev/zero to it all day long. My first thought is that I had a power issue with some power supplies lying about their actual amperage. So I found "FSP Net 36 Universal Netbook Power Adapter 12V 36W for ASUS Eee PC" in the discount bin and modified it to work in a 12v adapter. Still the crashing persists. However if I don't use the 3.5 addon package and I use a 2TB samsung laptop drive, no …

Hi! I'm using Banana PI and latest Armbian_5.00_Bananapi_Debian_jessie_3.4.110. Hello Igor! I am using your excellent ARM- based DEBIAN distribution on all of my 3 cubietrucks and I am very pleased with ist. At this time i would like to express my deepest gratitude to you and all fellow users and supporters of ARMBIAN. i have an orange pi 2 board, but the questions could be applied to any, i think so questions: 1. (the most interesting for me now) is it possible to change screen resolution of the screen without changing\replacing script.bin and rebooting? could we just avoid rebooting and somehow force linux to change resolution? 2. is it possible to boot from network for any of the boards and orange pi in particular? 3. to power up the boards could we use lipo accums like 18650 with step-up voltage converter? (i had a bad expierence in finding working image to my orange pi and it occurs that it was because of too long cable to the board, so it very sensitive to stable current i …

I am new to single board computers and have previously used Microsoft Windows computers or Android TV dongle/box. I do find it a bit odd that everyone seems to be working on their own versions of operating systems. It would be a bit like Intel coding their own Windows and AMD coding their own version of windows too. Now while people have different aims and software needs it is I think a shame all the different programmers and groups cannot come together more on software. You have the various Linuxs Then all the soc variations. Now Armbian seems a step in the right direction and you have various Socs and SBC computers, it is just a pity Xapple, Lem…

Hi everyone! I was asked by tkaiser to share something about my PHP control of GPIO pins. I can tell you that I will be happy to do so. Mostly because I'm really extremly good in one thing and that is forgetting how i did something. Now let's cut bulls**t down and start with small introduction of what I'm up to. I'll decsribe what I'm doing and what is working for me so it should all click together as project documentation and tutorial. Also all I'm going to describe is being done on Cubieboard2 (A20) but i guess that it can work almost on any ARM SBC running Debian or Ubuntu. At this moment, best option for me is still using CT as a production appliance but maybe CT+ will be faster... (instead SATA USB bridge access of course).

I guess everyone knows that downloading distros in general takes a lot of bandwidth, same with armbian even thought the armbian distro i only a couple of hundreds of MB. so beside offering direct download why not start using p2p downloads like ubuntu and other distros do already in order to save bandwidth. We can use the openbittorrent.com public tracker - i already have a cubietruck which is powered 24/7 for my p2p needs so i would mind sharing some armbian distros via p2p. What do you guys think ?

Two things: - If no HDMI is pluged in, /dev/fb0 disapears. Replug and it's there again. Must that be? (This nearly made me crazy 'till I found out!). - Compilation of external Drivers doesn't work anymore after new update. I have the precise error not here because I reinstalled generic version, but it's reproducable. A case for "Sticky" Subjects I see a need for "Sticky" Subjects, or a board category for some appropriate discussions: WishBoard support: Let user's provide both a wish list of boards they would like to support, and what they might be willing to do get support for a board. Let me start that on out: How about a NVIDIA Jetson TX1? The drivers are avialable, there is probably good support for getting it off the line, and I would be willing to try to get someone a dev board to work with: http://www.nvidia.com/object/jetson-tx1-module.html Publicity Support: Publicity for armbian means awareness and donations. Let's not forget there must be manufacturer'…

Hello all, After reading the Pine forums and having @tkaiser point out a few things I overlooked and/or missed I figured this might be a good place to ask a question that I've been trying to find the answer to. Please note that I'm not much of a hardware guy, I know the basics, enough to be dangerous. I am primarily a web applications developer and I use Raspberry Pis currently as testbeds for my server code. How do I accomplish this? Well I have (currently) a 7 Pi docker swarm based on hypriot's swarm image (I think it's a really cool package). Now for my question: I've been fine on CPU usage with only a few spikes, usually from an issue in the code I've written,…

Hi guys, do you know some article about how to run DHT11 or DHT22 sensors on Banana Pi? I have one sensor bmp180 on I2C bus and reading temperature and barometric pressure was quite easy but this is different bus and move code from Raspberry needs more effort. Basically I need proper binary able to read from gpio pins and I want to record/show values from this sensor on Rpi Monitor. If somebody have previous experiences with that and want to share them I will be very appreciated.

Hi everyone, I'm looking at a project to provide a Media Server in a small bar to the customers along with an Intranet webserver and Wireless Internet gateway. I want the internal LAN consisting of my Desktop PC and the new SBC server to be running GbE and for the SBC to be serving data from a 2.5" 250Gb SATA drive directly rather than over a USB bridge. This has led me to a choice of a Cubie board or Banana Pi connected to a GbE switch or alternatively I could simply get the Banana router board and avoid the extra switch device. (I'm leaning towards the router board as it will be less devices and therefore consume less power, unless there is a major disadvantage …

I can ping the card but i get multiple interruptions: PING 10.20.104.243 (10.20.104.243) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=1 ttl=61 time=0.362 ms x 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=3 ttl=61 time=0.300 ms 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=4 ttl=61 time=0.276 ms x x x 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=7 ttl=61 time=0.246 ms 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=8 ttl=61 time=0.256 ms …

Hi guys I'm desperately trying to get VPSD to run on my Cuboxi4Pro, I'm very close but need some help getting over the line. VPSD is a Serial to TCP hardware to software solution. I've run it on debian for years happily, I've now compiled it on armbian, there are two main components. An executable that is initiated with /etc/init.d/vspm which creates virtual devices in /dev/, this part is working fine. Then there is vspd which creates the daemon, the binary did get built but when I try and run it I get the following: root@cubox-i:~# /etc/init.d/vspd start starting vspd.../etc/init.d/vspd: line 47: /usr/local/vspd/sbin/vspd: cannot execute binary file [FAILURE] /etc…

First steps with LeMaker's guitar: These days a few SBC appear that are based on Actions Semi's S500 SoC (quad core Cortex A9r4 processor with 512KB L2 Cache and a PowerVR SGX544 GPU). Two competitors share the Raspberry's form factor (they both use Actions Semi's reference design): Lemon Pi: Roseapple Pi: The Allo SPARKY is also compatible to RPi HATs LeMaker's Guitar differs in size and shape(s) since the Guitar is the combination of one core board as SO-DIMM containing SoC, DRAM and the power management unit (PMU) and a few base boards featuring different hardware: (yes, currently you won't see a product picture since the LeMaker guys seem t…

Congratulation Igor for your new website design and layout! You have done a very good and excellent job, it is very clearly arranged and very descriptive! Many others should have a look and make some correctionbs to their website, because many show a very cumbersome design and are vey strange and difficult to mameuver! 5 Thumbs UP! Regards, Ireng

Igor, Like the new direction... you have the best image for all boards, and I like how you're formalizing it. One thing I noticed, you don't have any SSL during account creation and login. Granted this isn't a bank, but it would be nice if you enabled SSL during login and account creation. Especially these days with all the security breaches we have. Cheers.

I just wanted to support you in your move from ROM to Distro. Having up to date kernels, learning to make up to date kernels and absolutley great compile updates are what separate what you've been doing from other projects. I know quite well that it's not easy doing your own funky tech thing, and wish to congratulate you on seeing it through! Best wishes, a fan of your work! -Jake
