  1. Based on discussions the last days/weeks it seems obvious to me that we should document default Armbian security so that people know what they get and where to tweak if they have specific concerns. I took a few minutes to start with a list of issues that should IMO be addressed (no specific order): Explain where password strength policies originate Restore distro default sshd settings if concerned: sed -i 's/PermitRootLogin yes/PermitRootLogin without-password/' /etc/ssh/sshd_config Use and purpose of haveged: https://github.com/igorpecovnik/lib/issues/503 'Secure delete' on SD card, eMMC or SSD (overwriting contents on the FS layer requires a sync call if followed …

How to use this variable ? Tried to set different options, but when compiling the kernel aarch64, always use the system version 4.8. Set both variables in the config file, the variable UBOOT_TOOLCHAIN is triggered (begins to use the written version), and this variable does not change either as the compiler. This is my local problem not correct the system configuration or the same situation with the others ? For now I solve this problem rough hack - point in the variable PATCH user, the first desired directory with the compiler. Another associated question in the script general.sh in lines 471-474, with a list of packages for the host system specified compilers, including …

some simple thoughts to help (assuming limited time consumption) - adding a short "Roadmap" (main & side quests) section (in docs.armbian.com/Process_Contribute/ ?) displaying "main" goals for current & possible next iterations because currently the single tasks is the forum are useful but not "readable" - a (google group?) mailing list (read only) for contributors (to push roadmap changes & call for tasks) - a separate mailing list (read only) to call testers when needed - a page to report testing per board (wiki? google web document?)

As a start lets add the sunxi-can driver for the Olimex CAN-A20 interface for legacy kernel for Olimex lime2 A20 board like described in the Wiki at Olimex: https://www.olimex.com/wiki/A20-CAN I did: a) http://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_Build-Preparationon an virtual box on my machine and can successfully build kernel packages and apply user-patches enable some patches like the copy /patch…

Hello, It seems like the 'FORCE_MODULE_UNLOAD' parameter was (set to?) 'N' during the generation of the Armbian kernels. I know it's potentially dangerous to use it, but since the community is doing a lot of experimenting it would be convenient sometimes if this is enabled. Does this mean I have to compile a kernel with this option enabled myself, or is it possible to turn it on in future builds?

Hello, while reading the build tools scripts I found this part of the license text to be fishy: # This file is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public # License version 2. This program is licensed "as is" without any # warranty of any kind, whether express or implied. I think the intent was to say "whether expressed or implied". Can I get confirmation, so I can prepare a PR for changing all the (cut'n'pasted) occurrences ?

  13. Is there a way to increase/change CMA (contiguous memory alocator) reserved memory in kernel configuration for H3 devices? The value stays at default of 16Mb, but after kernel/image creation magically increase to some higher value like 160Mb for OpiOne (512Mb RAM), or 256Mb for OpiPC (1Gb RAM). Even if i try to change the value in kernel configuration, like i used to in A20, with: KERNEL_CONFIGURE="yes" FORCE_CHECKOUT="no" in compile.sh , this have no effect for H3 and the above values of 160Mb/256Mb stays the same. So i guess it's defined somewhere else, patch maybe? Is there a way to change this? I want to see if increasing the CMA value will help to get rid of "out…

  16. Hi, attached is a patch for U-Boot (should work on 2016.09-rc1 and 2016-09-rc2-dirty, will probably work on older ones as well) that makes it use the plain text file uEnv.txt instead of boot.scr, which has to be translated to a binary file first. This way changing the environment means only editing a text file, instead of editing a file, converting it to binary, and copying it over to the /boot partition on the SD. This becomes active if the U-Boot config has the option OLD_SUNXI_COMPAT disabled (in the menuconfig this is under ARM architecture -> Enable workarounds for booting old kernels). It also adds a small patch to board/sunxi/board.c to skip the setting …

Would there be interrest in a 3.4.112 kernel tree with the preempt_rt patches (rt143) added? I got myself said NanoPi's some days ago, and started to patch my way up from the original sunxi kernel 3.4.39 to the 3.4.112 version, then added the preempt_rt patches, and finally added (most?) patches from the Armbian build. Obviously manually adding the rejects. I'm also having a U-Boot 2016.09-rc1 that i have slightly patched to have it use uEnv.txt instead of boot.scr, because i got too annoyed t…

Just a thought. Over half of the boards we support feature a 26 or 40 RPi compatible GPIO header and all the other boards expose various protocols and GPIO on various pins and headers. Users coming from Raspbian and trying out any of our boards expect that basics work the same. While it's both impossible and not desirable to be 100% compatible with Raspbian a few things would make transition from Raspbian to Armbian for IoT folks more easy. Simple example: Default user pi in Raspbian has access to GPIO pins -- on Armbian it's currently root only. How's that done? A group called gpio exists in Raspbian, pi is added to it and /etc/udev/rules.d/99-com…

  22. Hi devs, I would like to discuss our default settings for the small NanoPi H3 boards that lack HDMI output capabilities (so the use cases are pretty clear: we're talking about headless servers or IoT nodes). Based on some research done the last few weeks I would like to start with these settings: HDMI/Mali400 disabled (for obvious reasons, also this is responsible for some severe energy savings -- can't tell numbers but this is the most efficient measure together with drastically reducing DRAM clockspeed) maximum CPU clockspeed by default 1200 MHz in fex file but 912 MHz in cpufrequtils' settings so that the boards remain at 1.1V by default and also maximum consumpti…

I've been studying and working on Dynamic Device-Tree Overlays since awhile, but after hard work, I've finally got a working prototype using the work from Pantelis Antoniou. During last few days, I was doing debugging to find out why it wasn't working, even if I got the ConfigFS working, it was refusing to grab my simple overlay test. I've finally figured out this afternoon : the Root/Base DTB need also to be compiled with the "symbols" list generated with the Antoniou's version of "dtc". So, I will probably prepare a patch soon and submit it thru a PR.

I've been working on the rtl8189fs patches for Mainline. Althouth the source code change between Legacy and Mainline is pretty trivial, preparing good and nice patches becomes a tedious task : - First, the original patch in Legacy contains tons of DOS file formatted (strange for a Linux driver, shame on Realtek) and even dos2unix failed on some files because of binaries character (probably Chinese), I had to edit many files because I wouldn't "signed-off" such ugly thing. (btw, maybe that dos2unix job should be done one Legacy to make it cleaner) - It is a quick big patch, but about the same size as the one in Legacy, about 10MB of text file. - Even after …

  36. As many of you know, lots of git repositories are automatically built every time there's a pull request, letting the project community know if that commit will introduce a flaw of some kind. If it's a help to Armbian, I'd like to configure a cloud-based build system that should be able to cut the "build all" time down to about 10% of what it is, and possibly to a number lower than that. Here's what I'd do. I'll use Google cloud's preemptible servers to spawn say 30 machines with the trigger being a pull request. If any of these macines dies during the build, it'll come back red. and otherwise, it will come back green and upload all of the binaries to google clou…

  49. Hello there, I am trying to build a custom armbian image using instructions here http://www.armbian.com/using-armbian-tools/, because I need to enable additional module for Philips webcam, not included in stock one. I have built the compile environment, run the script, added my modules and compiled, generating the entire image. Once I flash and boot from it though, Uboot hangs while saying "booting the kernel" I have tried release 5.00 and 5.06, using Debian Wheezy and Jessie, with the same result. I have also tried flashing the stock image and then just replace kernel packages I had built, because I thought the problem could have to do with systemd. As l…

Does anyone else have to run testdisk regularly after writing Armbian images to SD cards? It may simply be that I've cycles through the 3 or 4 cards that I have here so many times now that they are all on their way out, but it certainly happens on more than 1 card. I've just tried the latest Git version and it's happens with both debootstrap and debootstrap-ng. I used dd in an ubuntu VM to write the SD cards using a USB SD card reader. Workflow: Build Armbian use dd to write image file to SD card Try SD card in *pi board, it fails with unsupported file system error EDIT: the actual error is "Failed to mount Ext2 filesystem" Insert SD card into USB reader a…

I have a really slow internet connection and I'm doing alot of re-building Armbian and target systems etc. I have a copy of apt-cacher running on a local machine, I know how to configure it on target machines but I'm not sure how I would point the Armbian build system at it? At a guess I'm thinking that I probably need to modify debootstrap to create /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/90-apt-proxy.conf but wondered if anyone had any better ideas?

  54. Hello, I've got a problem with DNS resolving and customize-image.sh. One setup works (home), one setup does not (office). Both setups are OS X (different major versions), Virtual Box (different major versions), Network Bridging and Ubuntu 14.04. Building images (Banana Pi M1/M2/R1 jessie next) without customize-image.sh works perfectly, espacially the apt-get stuff, which needs DNS resolving. The working home setup uses dynamic (DHCP) private RFC1918 IPs (and/or public IPv6 IPs). The nonworking office setup uses public static IPv4 IPs for OS X and Ubuntu. The build process works flawlessly until customize-image.sh is executed. Some excerpts of cust…

Hi, since a Geekbox (Rockchip RK3368) and two Pine64+ (Allwinner A64) are collecting dust and at least for the latter longsleep already prepared a nice image build process that makes including a 'foreign' rootfs quite easy I thought about supporting arm64 also and not just only armhf. But I still lack oversights over our own build process or don't know in which direction other devs will move (I saw zador rearranging stuff the last days) so I thought I better ask first instead of hacking around I thought about adding a global variable defaulting to "armhf" and setting it to "arm64" for the new boards in configuration.sh since we later have to call make ARCH=…

  61. Would it be possible to add an option build parameter, something along the lines of BUILD_MINIMAL_DISTRO to the compile system? Allowing it as a command line option to compile.sh would be great as well. The purpose of the new option would be to use an alternative PAKETKI variable with only the packages absolutely required for running the system and configuring networking (ideally Ethernet and WiFI) without the bloat of bluez, stress etc. It would also be great if there was a call after install_external_applications to a user provided script that allows the user to install any additional packages that they require. There may be reasons not to do this and / or …

  63. Hello. Maybe this is discussed already, but i can't find anything with the search. I have some modifications in kernel and other things and i have my own build image of Debian Jessie and deb-s with this modifications. Version 4.84 of legacy 3.4.110 kernel. The most important for me is contiguous memory allocator - CMA, which solved my problem mentioned here - http://forum.armbian.com/index.php/topic/559-lamobo-r1-hardware-accelerated-driver/ , other things i can do under working system later, but i add them in image for ease. The problem is, after latest upgrade every modification is gone, of course. I made a new deb-s, version 5.0 with CMA enabled and apply them, but wh…

Please add in the title, if possible: [WiP] = Work in Progress [RFC] = Request for Comment [TEST], [TEST/CPU/Board] = Feed back on tests [Device specific] [Board specific] etc. The framework doc is here [WIP] The tool aims at building {legacy, vanilla} linux kernels as well as (user-)patching/creating complete working images with {trusty, wheezy, jessie} to write on your flash {sdcard/NAND} Long story short... feel free to: Report bugs related to build script itself or patches supplied with it; Suggest new f…

  67. Hi, I thought about the situation with the yet announced Orange Pi One (H3 based, $10, Fast Ethernet) that should start shipping on Jan 25th. The PCB is smaller, it features less USB ports than the Orange Pi PC and has a different voltage regulator switching between 1.1V and 1.3V (adjusted through GPIO): http://www.orangepi.org/orangepibbsen/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=895&page=4#lastpost Igor already prepared a test image for Orange Pi Plus based on kernel 4.4.0-rc5 last year (which I used to setup a NAS with an Orange Pi PC in the meantime ) and I would believe mainline kernel support for these H3 devices will improve pretty fast in 2016. It seems …

Hi folks, I started to think about that a while ago and want to share my thoughts with you. In my opinion RPi-Monitor is a great tool to get a clue what's going on on a SBC (especially when testing stuff but also in 24/7 use). It's also lightweight enough to run all the time in the background collecting data and to be used by a few clients also (rendering/display happens in the user's browser and not on the SBC). Currently users have to install RPi-Monitor manually and sometimes seem to be confused (for example they switch between legacy and vanilla/mainline kernel and temperature/consumption graphs disappear). If we would integrate RPi-Monitor into Armbia…

  73. Rebuilding kernel several times in a row, made some changes, that would be nice to have in build script by default, and also some thoughts on custom kernel patches. 1.Option to not overwrite kernel config before compilation. Example: setting KERNEL_KEEP_CONFIG="yes" in build.sh Changes (common.sh): # use proven config if [ "$KERNEL_KEEP_CONFIG" != "yes" ]; then cp $SRC/lib/config/$LINUXCONFIG.config $SOURCES/$LINUXSOURCE/.config; fi 2. Option to use ccache for kernel compilation (at least). ccache can be set by creating symlinks for cross-compiling tools, but having an option in build script is more useful and easier IMHO. Example: setting USE_CCACHE="yes" in bu…
