Dear Armbians, welcome to this week’s newsletter! Here, you’ll find updates on the latest release and community contributions. Armbian Rolling Releases: What You Need to Know Armbian offers rolling releases for users seeking the most up-to-date features and bug fixes. These rolling releases are available at the bottom of the official Armbian download pages. However, it’s important to remember that while these versions are functional, they are not as thoroughly tested as the stable releases and therefore are not recommended for production environments. If you need to switch between stable and rolling releases, check out armbian-config. Recent Changes The Armbian team ha…

This week's updates center on expanded board support, Rockchip and Qualcomm platform maturation, and build system refinements. New hardware coverage grew across multiple SoC families, with the Lubancat 5IO (RK3588), KickPi K3B, Mellow Fly C5 3D printer board, and community support for the Orange Pi Zero 3W (Allwinner A733). The Arduino UNO Q advanced to mainline 7.1 on the edge kernel and gained desktop hardware acceleration via Mesa pinned to Trixie backports, while the BeagleY-AI received ISP, IMX219, and VPAC patches. Companion fixes addressed NVMe/SD boot conflicts on the NanoPi M6, Ethernet on the BigTreeTech CB1, and AIC8800 UART Bluetooth on Orange Pi A733 hardware…

Being someone who has already experimented with two transformation box approaches for Pitivi in the past, maintainers thought I might be the right person to do a modern one. Creating a user interface for a video transformation requires three things: the implementation of the transformation, a way to draw the widgets over the viewer, and mapping the input to the reverse transformation. Iglia has done more work on the graphics driver for the VideoCore VI GPU found in Raspberry Pi 4 and other Broadcom BCM2711-based hardware with Vulkan 1.2 conformance, and Roman Stratiienko added Vulkan 3D graphics acceleration to Android, or more exactly LineageOS. Raspberry Pi and Iglia have been collaborating together since the launch of the Raspberry Pi 4 SBC to develop a Khronos conformant Mesa 3D graphics driver for the board, and that’s a long-term project that’s been going on for over two years, and not quite finished yet. Here’s a non-exhaustive timeline of the project so far: February 2020 – Raspberry Pi 4 V3DV driver gets OpenGL ES 3.1 conformance, work on Vulk…

Description A patch for Pinebook Pro was not applying cleaning on current 5.15 rockchip64 kernel flavour, turns out that Orange Pi 4 LTS has no more HDMI video output and dmesg is lamenting about a missing extcon connector over fusb driver. fusb driver has the control over video output since it has the capacity to steer video output from HDMI to DP via USB type-c connector. A broken fusb driver causes broken video output; this problem can be shared among all boards that depend upon it. This pull request fixes the application of the Pinebook Pro patch, and perhaps fixes the Orange Pi 4 LTS broken video output. edit: I confirm, fixing the patch fixes also video output on…

WaveShare Touchscreen Driver Fix (Odroid) Description A number of other WaveShare screens also use ID: 0eef:0005 and therefore the patch used to enforce the VU7 driver breaks these other screens. This was the purpose of the "disable_vu7" env boot param which correctly defaults to true. However, this is ignored in boot.cmd + the patches for the kernel reverse the changes made by Hardkernel to fix this problem. I have corrected the problem by removing 0eef:0005 from the driver enforced ignore_list and changed boot.cmd to allow the "disable_vu7" to function correctly (adding usbhid quirk when set to false). How Has This Been Tested? Please describe the tests that you ran …

The Mali-G57 GPU part of the Valhall family, and found in several Arm processors such as MediaTek MT8192 and MT8195 SoC powering some Chromebooks, is now supported by the Panfrost open-source driver with a fully-conformant OpenGL ES 3.1 implementation. Last year, Collabora updated Panfrost with support for OpenGL ES 3.1 on Midgard (Mali T760 and newer) and Bifrost (Mali G31, G52, G76) GPUs, and also announced having started working on Valhall GPUs. One part of the work was done in the summer of 2021 with some reverse-engineering work on Mali-G78 GPU’s instruction set, and this has culminated with a fully-conformant OpenGL3.1 for Mali-G57 GPU. Interestingly, it’s not been …

Description Orange Pi 4 and Orange Pi 4 LTS were the last boards using staging USB3 Type-C controller. This PR moves both of them to use mainline driver, so staging driver can be removed from patchset (as suggested by @Tonymac32 here: https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/3953#issuecomment-1172962963) Most of the changes have been adapted upon the same nodes from tinkerboard 2 device tree and GPIOs have been adjusted. Since both opi4 and opi4 LTS share the same hardware, I felt it could be useful to change on both boards. Probably if it works for my opi4 LTS also works for regular opi4; I will do my tests, if @piter75 wants to do private tests, in compatibility with hi…

KiCad 7.0.0 open-source EDA software has just been released with a range of new features from custom fonts to 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse integration to opt-in Sentry crash reporting, and many more. It took over three years between KiCad 5.0.0 and KiCad 6.0.0 announcements, but only a little over a year for the release of KiCad 7.0.0. Did KiCad developers acquire superhuman abilities or did AI get involved in the development somehow? Most probably not, and instead they change the release schedule to a yearly one, so we should get annual releases of the open-source EDA suite going forward, with KiCad 8.0.0 to be released in Q1 2024. Some notable changes to KiCad 7.0 include: Cu…

MIPS is dead, right? Well, there’s now very little done on the architecture itself, MIPS (the company) has decided to switch to RISC-V architecture, and unveiled the eVocore product lineup currently comprised of the eVocore P8700 and I8500 multiprocessor IP cores. The 64-bit cores are scalable from single-core multi-thread to a single cluster with multiple cores, and up to a multi-cluster, and target high-performance, real-time compute applications such as networking, data centers, and automotive. The eVocore P8700 comes with a 16-stage deep pipeline with multi-issue Out-of-Order (OOO) execution and multi-threading. MIPS claims it has single-threaded performance greater t…

German embedded systems company iesy’s ESP32 OSM-0F is an ESP32-based solder-on LGA system-on-module that complies with SGET OSM Size-0 (30x15mm) form factor, offers WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, and more. The SGET Open Standard Module (OSM) standard defines four module sizes, namely Size-0 (30x15mm), Size-S (30x30mm), Size-M (45x30mm), and Size-L (45x45mm), and all the modules we’ve covered so far were powered by a Linux-capable processor. But it’s more challenging, albeit not impossible, to design a Linux-capable OSM Size-0 module, and that form factor is better suited to microcontroller-class chips like ESP32. (Technically, ESP32 can run Linux, but it’s more for sho…

FriendlyElec has recently announced the NanoPi R6C mini PC that a variant of the Rockchip RK3588S powered NanoPi R6S mini PC and 2.5GbE router that we reviewed with FriendlyWrt/OpenWrt and Ubuntu 22.04 earlier this year, but with just one 2.5GbE and one GbE interface, a built-in M.2 NVMe SSD socket and USB-C Debug UART port for easy external access to the serial console. The company sent me a NanoPi R6C sample for review, but since we’ve already tested the similar NanoPi R6S extensively, I’ll write a single-post mini review this time around, checking out the hardware, and focusing on testing the new features such as the NVMe SSD and the USB debug port when running Ubuntu …

Ultenic T10 is a 2-in-1 smart vacuum cleaner and mopping system with a self-emptying base that’s quite similar to the Cybovac S31 robot I reviewed a little over a year ago. The Cybovac vacuum cleaner still works fine, but it has some shortcomings, so when Ultenic asked me whether I would be interested in reviewing their T10 unit, I accepted, and here I am with a new smart robot vacuum cleaner that I’ll review with the Android app in a larger house. Ultenic T10 unboxing The package and hardware are very similar to what I got with the Cybovac model. The robot comes with a charging base that’s pretty large since it includes its own dust bag for the self-emptying function. Ke…

Rockchip showcased some new processors at Mobile World Congress 2023: the RK3528 for TV boxes, and the RK3562 for tablets both with a Cortex-A53 CPU subsystem, but the former comes with a Mali-450 GPU, and the latter with a faster Mali-G52 2EE GPU. Both are clearly for entry-level devices, but I’m a little surprised they didn’t go with Cortex-A55 cores instead. Rockchip demonstrated the new processors in a TV box running Android 13 and a tablet with a 144,506 score in the latest Antutu benchmark as shown below. Rockchip RK3528 preliminary specifications: CPU – Arm Cortex-A53 processor (core count unspecified) GPU – Arm Mali-450 GPU with AFBC compression support Memory – L…

I’ve spent a bit more time with Ubuntu 22.04 on Khadas VIM4 Amogic A311D2 SBC, and while the performance is generally good features like 3D graphics acceleration and hardware video decoding are missing. But I was pleased to see a Linux hardware video encoding section in the Wiki, as it’s not something we often see supported early on. So I’ve given it a try… First, we need to make a video in NV12 pixel format that’s commonly outputted from cameras. I downloaded a 45-second 1080p H.264 sample video from Linaro, and converted it with ffmpeg: [crayon-6289ed6d13e21975150960/] I did this on my laptop. As a raw video, it’s pretty big with 3.3GB of storage used for a 45-second vi…

Mixtile Blade 3 is a Rockchip RK3588 SBC with up to 32GB RAM designed for server applications, notably to build clusters through a U.2 edge connector with 4-lane PCIe Gen3, SATA 3.0 to interconnect multiple boards. What was not clear so far is how multiple boards would be connected, as we were just shown two boards connected by a U.2 cable, which does not scale, and does not provide power as the 12V input also comes with the U.2 connector. The company has now provided more details showing how it’s done, namely through a breakout board that connects to the U.2 edge connector, and allows cluster design as shown below. The U.2 breakout board comes with a 6-pin connector 12V …
