This week's work centers on a consolidated uwe5622 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth driver, CI and repository infrastructure changes, and board and toolchain enablement across multiple SoC families. The uwe5622 driver has been relocated to a dedicated repository and unified across kernel versions. Initial commits address a use-after-free in mtty_probe(), resolve 157 -Wmissing-prototypes warnings, correct dev_addr const guards for kernels 5.17–6.18 under clang, and fix sdio_pub_int_init for the newer gpiod int_ap API on GCC 14. The build system now sources the driver from this repository, adds a GitHub Actions test workflow, and refactors the associated DVFS patch and kernel configuration.…

Armbian builds for hundreds of boards. A kernel bump that is clean on one SoC can leave another unbootable and no build log will tell you. So there is a rack, and the rack boots them. Compiling is not evidence. A kernel that builds, packages that install, an image that flashes — none of it proves a board comes back after reboot. Armbian supports a very large number of boards across a dozen vendors and twenty SoC families, maintained largely by volunteers who each own one or two of them. The failure mode that hurts is not a broken build. It is a change that builds perfectly and quietly bricks the boot path on hardware nobody happened to have on their desk that week. The au…

Complete Desktop updates for bookworm. This update follows the debian approach of desktops following the task-(desktopname)-desktop install . I also had to split the skel for each desktop to keep installs cleaner as only the files for that desktop get installed and not files for other desktops not in use on the build. skel.all skel.(desktopname). I have done a complete update to the appsgroups and we moved printing and filesharing support to the appgroups to make things cleaaner in the long run. a few new appgroupds added and apps added and removed. everything done . was done with feedback from users. Description Add support for RPi5 in our bcm2711 kernel. This is mostly but not entirely based on changes from Raspberry Pi kernel PR 5618. After enabling those options, I noticed that even though hdmi was working, kernel was not able to find the sdcard and usb was also not working. So I had to use diffconfig to compare our configs with the vendor config and enable some more options. Raising the PR so that others can also play with it as well. Meanwhile I will work on getting Trixie Desktop Image running with mesa 23.3-rc5 from experimental repo. As part of that I will split RPi 5 into separate board config until recent version of mesa is made available in current debian …

Description This commit forces cgroup v1 usage as a workaround for docker / runc BPF issues until a proper fix is submitted Context Docker 20.10+ cannot run on our Asus Tinkerboard, it throws BPF related errors (Like opencontainers/runc#2959 , especially this comment). I tried a lot of armbian flavors (focal, jammy, bullseye + current, edge and legacy kernels), and even building an image with CONFIG_BPF_SYSCALL=y as suggested by this comment but it didn't fix the issue. The only thing that fixed docker was to add extraargs=systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=0 to /boot/armbianEnv.txt. Until someone else does a proper fix to make cgroup v2 working, I suggest downgrading to …

Amazon has just launched the “all new” Fire TV Cube streaming device with an Amlogic POP1-G octa-core Cortex-A73/A53 processor that we never heard of, but that appears to be almost the same as the Amlogic A311D2 processor that we reviewed in Khadas VIM4 SBC. The Amlogic POP1-G (aka Amlogic – AML Popcorn) also integrates an Arm Mali-G52 MP8 GPU clocked at 800 MHz, and the third generation Fire TV Cube features 2GB LPDDR4/x memory, 16GB storage, WiFi 6E and Fast Ethernet, as well as an HDMI port. It’s the last day of the year and the time to look at some of the highlights of 2022, some traffic statistics from CNX Software website, and speculate on what 2023 may bring us. The semiconductors shortage continued in 2022, but things are looking brighter in 2023 with the full reopening of the world mixed with forecasts of difficult economic times that should keep the demand/supply equation in check. On the Arm processor front the biggest news of the year, at least in this corner of the Internet, was the launch of the Rockchip RK3588 octa-core Cortex-A76/A78 processor together with interesting single board computers that we’ll discuss below. Announced last year, the Amlo…

rkdevflash: don't wait for "Loader" mode after sending spl_loader; show the loop counter rkdevflash: don't wait for "Loader" mode after sending spl_loader; show the loop counter I thought sending the spl_loader blob puts it into "Loader" mode, but... ... turns out "Loader" mode is a separate (rockusb, etc) mode. So if in Maskrom mode, just send the loader, and trust it can now WriteLba still keeps the timeout, for when a loader is not accepted View the full article

Dear Armbians, It’s been a month since our last newsletter. We hope you are enjoying our new release! Here are the topics we are working on: Infra We are aware that our primary repository management and rsync servers need serious upgrades, as it takes hours and hours to deliver a release. Past week we have enabled two additional servers and several others are waiting for the upgrade. This will further improve time to deliver updates and new images. Documentation We are working on improving the documentation, focusing on the build framework. The current build framework documentation is largely outdated, which poses a challenge for those unfamiliar with the tool. Builds …

Description As the issue @catalinii mentioned in #3271, when a sdcard has got flashed with radxa rock3a image or manjaro-arm rock3a image before, armbian can't boot on this sd card after flashed with ether. Here is the root cause: https://forum.armbian.com/topic/12352-orange-pi-4/page/3/#comment-94322. We can avoid this issue by using the same gpt partition type as radxa and manjaro, and use the same fat /boot partition to aviod the bad support for ext4 filesystem from rockchip legacy u-boot. How Has This Been Tested? Please describe the tests that you ran to verify your changes. Please also note any relevant details for your test configuration. [x] Prepare a sd card,…

A few years ago I reviewed the ICE Tower CPU cooling fan for Raspberry Pi 4 which is an oversized heatsink with a cooling fan and some RGB LEDs that obviously does its job at cooling the board, but the main benefit is really its aesthetics. 52Pi has now designed another ICE Tower cooling fan for the Orange Pi 5 SBC, and the new Orange Pi 5B, with the same concept except for its low-profile design. It’s probably not needed for the Orange Pi 5 which should do fine with a heatsink, but it may help for the Orange Pi 5B due to the extra heat from the WiFi 6 module. A company representative for 52Pi told us that: I have seen this Orange Pi 5B motherboard posted on your site, th…
