With the Star64 and VisionFive 2 single board computers, we’ve already got two hardware platforms based on the StarFive JH7110 quad-core RISC-V processor, but somehow we did not get the detailed specifications of the new processor, and some details such as the presence of AI accelerators or exact PCIe specifications were lacking. Some documentation for the StarFive JH7100 processor has been released and answers some of those questions. It’s actually an SoC with six RISC-V cores, of which four 64-bit RISC-V cores run the main OS, plus a 64-bit RISC-V monitoring core, and a 32-bit RISC-V real-time core. The AI accelerators found in the JH7100 (Neural Network Engine and NVDL…

Arduino has recently announced the Opta micro PLC with industrial IoT capabilities adding yet another solution to the Arduino Pro family. Arduino used to focus on the hobbyist crowd, but with the launch of the Arduino Pro family in 2020 starting with the Portenta H7 board, the company switched its main focus to the more profitable enterprise market. Since then they’ve launched several other boards designed in-house, and last year started collaborating with the introduction of the Arduino WisGate Edge LoRaWAN gateways based on RAKwireless hardware. The Arduino Opta is another one of those collaborations as it was designed together with Finder, who calls their devices PLR (…

Description This is a follow-up of: https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/5901 It resolves a conflict between the SimpleDRM and Panfrost graphic drivers by blacklisting simpledrm. Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux 6.1, an LTS kernel, last Sunday: So here we are, a week late, but last week was nice and slow, and I’m much happier about the state of 6.1 than I was a couple of weeks ago when things didn’t seem to be slowing down. Of course, that means that now we have the merge window from hell, just before the holidays, with me having some pre-holiday travel coming up too. So while delaying things for a week was the right thing to do, it does make the timing for the 6.2 merge window awkward. That said, I’m happy to report that people seem to have taken that to heart, and I already have two dozen pull requests pending for tomorrow in my inb…

The ESP32 DevKitC V4 is now selling with the ESP-WROOM-DA module with two PCB antennas that was introduced last year in order to offer a longer WiFi range and better reliability. The development kit is exactly the same as for the other ESP32 DevKitC V4 module, and the only difference is the dual antenna design. When running a recent version of the Arduino Core for the ESP32 (2.0.3 or greater), the ESP32 will automatically switch to the antenna with the strongest signal in order to deliver the best connectivity possible. Description kASLR is a handy security feature, with no performance downside. (The only downside is some slight inconvenience if you're using KGDB, but if you're the type of person who does kernel step debugging, it seems sane to guess you're already building your own kernel.) If it cannot be enabled due to lack of seed, the kernel will simply print a warning and continue. (See #4306 for more context on what was previously added to get it working on a NanoPi R4S.) I also believe this warning will be useful note for us to add rng support on all devices as time goes on. Example of failure: [ 0.052888] KASLR disabled due to lack of seed Example of success (on a NanoPi …

Nessie Circuits’ Riotee board combines Raspberry Pi R2040 microcontroller and a Riotee module based on Nordic nRF52833 WiSoC with a 2.4 GHz radio and targets batteryless IoT applications thanks to a stackable design taking a capacitors add-on board and a solar panel. Batteries introduce maintenance costs and environmental issues with millions of batteries disposed of every day. That’s why companies are trying to provide solutions for batteryless IoT designs such as the Everactive batteryless IoT devkit or Telink energy harvesting wireless module for remote controls. The Riotee module, board, and ecosystem also aim to play their part in reducing the use of batteries in wir…

The ISC DHCP server (dhcpd) was traditionally used to set up a DHCP server in Linux, but the software is reaching end-of-life, and the Internet Systems Consortium is now recommending their own Kea DHCP server or alternatives such as Dnsmasq or udhcpd (as found in Busybox) as a replacement. I was unaware of this having just used the isc-dhcp-server package to set up a DHCP server in NanoPi R6C router/mini PC earlier this month. But a blog post on Ubuntu informed us dhcpd was going away, and Canonical plans to switch over the Kea DHCP server instead. The main difference from the user perspective is that Kea relies on JSON configuration files so all your dhcpd files will hav…

Description The mt7623 family only has one board (BananaPi R2) and has not been properly maintained in many years. Instead of fully removing the family, bump the kernel to 'current' 6.6 since the SoC and also the BananaPi R2 is mainlined and shouldn't cause too many troubles. No need for 'edge' kernel unless someone plans to step in as maintainer who bumps and tests it on every new kernel release. Also: Add armhf support to Trixie (was this disabled for a specific reason? If so, please let me know. It builds fine though) Move the NETWORKING_STACK in main config to after family config to allow the family config to change it. Please note: I do not own the hardware. Description 6.1 vendor kernel is not bootable on opi3b. There is a post in forum: https://forum.armbian.com/topic/36332-orangepi3b-kernel-panic-when-trying-to-boot-with-the-new-vendor-kernel6143/#comment-186436 Opi3b is using mainline uboot for all branches which is not compatibale with vendor kernel's npu, ~so I use radxa's rockchip uboot instead and limit mainline uboot to branch edge~. I find that setting vdd_npu with property regulator-always-on will fix the issue. There is also a missing uwe5622 patch on rk35xx family, which will cause kernel panic of sprdbt_tty kernel module. Please describe the tests that you ran to verify your changes. Please also note any relev…

Description This is a draft/wip for adding https proxy caching. This is especially designed for machines hosting lots of github runners to reduce their bandwidth usage by sacrificing disk space. http caching has been merged already and only needed minor changes. Caching https however is way more complicated. Encryption needs to be broken and rewrapped and then obviously downloads will fail due to cert issues. Classic MITM. So a new certificate authority (CA) needs to be put in place to allow these "fake" certs. Why is this even necessary? Well one major part is downloads from upstream apt repositories. The other major part is downloading 3rd party repositories and artif…

This week's work centers on a comprehensive CI pipeline overhaul, expanded board and SoC support, and notable U-Boot and kernel modernization across Rockchip platforms. A substantial portion of the changes target CI infrastructure hardening in the new os-ci-test repository, including self-contained release handling, GHCR authentication via builtin tokens, watchdog-based auto-retry for stalled runs, proxy normalization, and sane build timeouts (60m packages, 30m/60m images). Related fixes in armbian/actions resolve datacenter runner proxy issues, while a rootfs change strips mmdebstrap's apt proxy from shipped images. Codeowners pruning of inactive maintainers and a Docker…

Here’s the last part of Khadas VIM4 review with Ubuntu 22.04 “Jammy Jellyfish”. You may want to check out our previous parts with the unboxing and first boot, followed by Android 11 if you haven’t already done so. Ubuntu 22.04 installation on Khadas VIM4 I used the same method of installation with OOWOW firmware that can download the image directly from Khadas server, and install it to the eMMC flash. Since I already had Android 11 running on the board, I had to keep pressing the function key (middle), then shortly press the reset button, before releasing the function key and entering OOWOW interface. From there, I selected Ubuntu 22.04 Gnome, and went ahead with the dow…
