  4. I'd been putting this off for years. Every March, I'd read someone else's embedded world recap, tell myself "next year", and go back to my terminal. This year I actually went and I'm still processing everything I saw. First things first: the teamBefore I talk about any stand or chip, I need to tell you what made this trip different from anything I've done before. There were five of us from the Armbian team at the show: Igor, Werner, Meko, amazingfate, and me. Five people. Four countries. Some of us had worked together for years and never met in person. You know how it is in open-source, you collaborate through GitHub, you argue about patches on the mailing list, you revie…

  8. Gaurav Singh, acting as Circuit Valley, has designed an open-source hardware USB 3.0 Type-C industrial camera with three boards: one to capture data through a CMOS sensor, another based on a Lattice Crosslink NX FPGA to handle image processing, and finally, a board equipped with an Infineon FX3 USB 3.0 controller for sending the video data to the host. This design allows the DIY camera to be extremely flexible, as for instance, you could keep the FPGA and USB board, and simply change the sensor board for a better/different camera. A 3D printable enclosure is also provided, and the camera supports C-mount lenses, so the lens can also be easily changed as required. Here’s …

  13. Google Research has been working on its own Rust-based operating system called KataOS and designed to secure embedded systems that run Machine Learning (ML) applications. There has been a lot of talk about the Rust programming language in recent times, since it offers about the same level of performance as C programming but helps programmers write more secure code with built-in prevention against buffer overflows for instance. It has gained a lot of traction over the years, and Linux 6.1 will be the first kernel release to include Rust code. Google Research noticed that system security is often treated as a feature that can be added to existing systems either by software …

The LapPi 2.0 is a DIY laptop kit with an acrylic enclosure, a UPS HAT with a 18650 battery holder, and off-the-shelf parts including speakers, a touchscreen display, a Raspberry Pi camera, and a wireless keyboard that’s suitable for the Raspberry Pi 4 and pretty much any other small single board computer from Radxa, Orange Pi, Banana Pi, FriendlyElec, Hardkernel, and others. We’ve seen several Raspberry Pi laptops over the years with the CrowPi L and Pi-Top, and I have to say the LapPi 2.0 is not the most eye-pleasing or sophisticated design, but at least, it’s versatile and not limited to the Raspberry Pi family. 26. Geekworm, in collaboration with Mcuzone, has launched the UPS Scap 5V5A, a new supercapacitor UPS HAT for the Raspberry Pi 5 designed to keep the Raspberry Pi running long enough (a few seconds to a few minutes) to save data and shut down safely, rather than provide hours of backup power. Available in 100F, 60F, and 22F versions, the HAT has a built-in PD chip that negotiates a true 5V/5A output. This gives the Raspberry Pi 5 enough power to run properly without triggering the low-voltage warnings that can happen with some power supplies. The module connects to the Raspberry Pi 5 through pogo pins to detect power loss and supports I2C for checking voltage and current in r…

  32. Copied from #4255 by @hzyitc - added shellfmt and .editorconfig for consistency Description I notice that the first commit of armbian-next contains too many things (armbian-next: huge refactor, shellfmt, codesplit, logging/error handling). It's really hard to find out what changes we do, because we both split /lib/*.sh and change the code in one commit. It will loss the association between master and armbian-next. This PR is just split /lib/*.sh without changing any codes (except the first commit and the remove of source in /lib/main.sh). So users can find out where the codes come and then following the original commit log. If we want to merge armbian-next, this PR ca…

On investigation, I was able to narrow the issue down to net-phy-Support-yt8531c.patch and upstream change for lib/mapple tree for some reason these two changes don't seem to be playing along very well. I am trying to get the reason for it, but so far even after enabling low level debugging, hung task detection, earlyprintk and countless such debugging option, I was not able to get more output from the kernel or to get the kernel into kgdb mode. 50. We have seen ESP32s used for everything from simple IoT devices to AI, audio, and vision projects. But while looking for a new project, I found out about ESP-SDR firmware, which turns the ESP32 into a native Software-Defined Radio (SDR) without additional hardware. This open-source firmware bypasses the ESP32’s fixed-function Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modems and taps directly into the internal ADC signal chain to capture raw I/Q baseband samples. It then sends these samples to a computer over USB or UART, where they can be processed and viewed as a radio spectrum or waterfall display, turning supported ESP32 chips into low-cost software-defined radio receivers without requiring…

As we approach our next point release, the focus shifts entirely towards bug fixing and stabilization. Feature development is on hold this month to ensure that core functionalities like network connectivity, video output, and booting processes are solid. We aim to resolve as many issues as possible during this period. However, we encourage users to report any recognized problems here so that they can be addressed in future updates. Target for next release We are targeting kernel v6.12 for our current builds and v6.13 for edge builds, while vendor kernels will remain at their latest versions. We are releasing major upgrade on Rockchip vendor kernel. We focus on providing …

Especially on machines with lots of runner this could save quite some bandwidth while sacrificing disk space. http caching has been tested and seem to work nicely. https caching is a lot more tricky and may be introduced later. This PR has two parts: set apt repository to http instead of https where possible. Packages are signed anyways. Pass various proxy environment variables to docker so it respects those. Doesn't make sense not to pass them since when using PREFER_DOCKER=no and any of these variables are set beforeh…

It probably works now, but would be nice to get rid of it. Context: that "firmware copy for xu4" was mixed in the middle of kernel compile logic, and was extracted into a kernel config hook; kernel configs are hashed (for caching) and thus need to work even when kernel_work_dir is not set.
