This does not affect the downloaded ready-made ROOTFS, but the new compression value dramatically increased the process time (2-4 times) for user configurations. Adding a variable indicating the compression ratio will make it easy to select the desired value according to the conditions of use of the assembly system. By default, the previous value is set, for a mass build (which is executed from command scripts), it is easy to add any value of the maintainer's choice and will allow you to maintain a high build speed for custom versions that are usually executed on conventional ARM devices with low performance. Description The Orange Pi Zero 3 board was recently added as a WIP configuration, and through testing it was determined that the CPU frequency configuration was not working for this board, but was working correctly for the Orange Pi Zero 2. Further investigation determined that the h618 CPU (which differs from the Zero 2 h616) was not in the allow list in the CPU frequency kernel driver. This PR updates both the current and edge sunxi kernel configurations with a patch that enables the h618 device in the configuration whitelist. The goal of this patch was to make the smallest change possible change to the driver code to enable the capability for the Zero 3. In the code, …

Single Board Computers (SBCs) like the Orange Pi 5, Radxa Rock 5, and others powered by modern SoCs are more powerful than ever. But that performance comes with a cost heat. Without proper thermal management, these boards can throttle, crash, or suffer long-term damage. Whether you’re running a server, media center, or developer workstation, adding a simple heatsink can dramatically improve stability, performance, and device lifespan. Why heat is a problem for SBCsAll computers generate heat and SBCs are no exception. The CPU, GPU, RAM, and power management chips on an SBC work hard, and as a result, temperatures rise quickly under load. Unlike laptops and desktops, most …

Allwinner T3 is a quad-core Cortex-A7 automotive-grade processor that supports a wide industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. After comparing the specifications of Allwinner T3, I think it is the same as Allwinner A40i, as Allwinner has different business units and the T-series is for the automotive-grade market, while the A-series has historically been for the tablet market, but is now also used in the industrial-grade market. Tronlong SOM-TLT3 and SOM-TLT3-B are Allwinner T3 system-on-modules (SoM) of Allwinner T3. Both modules have basically the same specifications but the SOM-TLT3 comes with castellated holes for soldering to the carrier board, while the SOM-T…

Espressif ESP32-P4 is a general-purpose dual-core RISC-V microcontroller clocked at up to 400 MHz with AI instructions extension, numerous I/Os, and security features. It also happens to be the first microcontroller from Espressif Systems without wireless connectivity, and as such, it should probably be seen as an alternative to STM32F7/H7 or NXP i.RT Arm Cortex-M7 microcontrollers/crossover processors, and likely offered at a significantly lower cost. It should also offer lower power consumption than other ESP32 chips thanks in part to a third RISC-V core clocked at 40 MHz that can keep the system running while the other two high-performance cores are down. ESP32-P4 key …

Description Context systemd's cloud-init.target and armbian-firstrun.service will be started concurrently (both are wanted by multi-user.target). Both will try to create SSH host keys by default: armbian-firstrun will always delete SSH host keys and then generate new ones cloud-init.target (by default) will always delete SSH host keys and then generate new ones. Problem When one must run armbian-firstrun and cloud-init, there is no deterministic ordering between the 2 files execution and therefore no one can guarantee which will be last to setup OpenSSH host keys. In my current scenario, host keys are explicitly setup in cloud-init and I would expect armbian-firstrun…

Changes in the name of patch files. two mandatory fields are used - a digital index that strictly fixes the position of the patch during the overlay process, the last character in the initial state is 0, this will allow you to add new patches to the right place at any time without having to rename all patches. The second required field is the name (nickname) of the user on GIT who added (is responsible for supporting) this patch in the build system. The rest of the patch file name is at the discretion of the person who adds it and it is desirable to have a description of the purpose of the patch. 5G is often associated with Gigabit speeds when found in mobile handsets or connected laptops, while there’s also 5G LPWA for battery-powered IoT devices. 5G RedCap, which stands for Reduced Capability, offers a middle ground for industrial IoT applications that keep some 5G features such as low latency, low power consumption, enhanced security, and network slicing while limiting the bandwidth to around 85 Mbps. 5G RedCap, also called NR Lite, will be part of 3GPP Release 17 scheduled for later in 2022, and further improved in Rel 18 in 2023. It will be first found in applications currently relying on LTE Cat 1 through Cat 4, and can be considered a light version of the 5…

Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform just a few days ago, but Linaro has just announced that Linux was already upstreamed to the premium mobile SoC featuring a 3.2 GHz Arm Cortex-X3 “Prime” core, four performance cores at up to 2.8 GHz, and three Efficiency cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz. Most of the work was done by Linaro Engineers Abel Vesa and Neil Armstrong with initial support posted on November 16th on the Linux kernel mailing list, and with the set of patches released so far, it is even possible to boot a minimal AOSP image on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 development kit shown below which should be manufactured by Lantronix, if history is any guide. VVenC and VVdeC are open-source software H.266/VCC video encoder and decoder respectively that are optimized to use SIMD instructions on x86 (SSE42/SIMDe and AVX2) and Arm, and the decoder runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android. H.266, aka VCC (Versatile Video Coding) video compression standard was adopted in 2020 promising to reduce data requirements by around 50% compared to the previous H.265/HEVC standard at the same visual quality. H.266 should also outperform the royalty-free AV1 video codec. We hadn’t seen news since the announcement, but this may be changing with the Realtek RTD1319D processor unveiled with support for both 4K H.266 and AV1 video decoding last…

Pico Technology has released PicoVNA 5 control software for their vector network analyzers for Windows x86 64-bit, Mac, Linux x86 64-bit, and Raspberry Pi 3 and greater single board computers, superseding the Windows-only PicoVNA 3 software. As a Ubuntu user, I hate it when some hardware tool forces me to install software on Windows when there’s no Linux alternative, so any company that provides cross-platform tools is making the right move. I’m also not quite sure what a “vector network analyzer” (VNA) is, so I’ll first look into the PicoVNA 106 and PicoVNA 108 6/8.5 GHz VNAs from the company. PicoVNA 106/108 vector network analyzers highlights and specifications: Freque…
