A friendlier, faster, snap-free desktop install in armbian-configIf you've installed a desktop environment with armbian-config over the last few months, you may have noticed things feel different: there's a tier you can pick, the browser actually works on every arch, uninstall doesn't take half your system with it, and there's no snap pop-up surprising you on Ubuntu builds. That's not by accident — the desktop submodule has been quietly rebuilt from the ground up. Here's what landed, why we did it, and what it means for you. Pick the desktop you want — at install, and afterThree tiers, instead of one all-or-nothing install: minimal — DE + display manager + a terminal. Abo…

This week's work centers on kernel 7.2 enablement across out-of-tree drivers, a redesigned armbian-install with expanded boot topologies, and new UEFI cloud ISO delivery alongside board additions. The mainline bump to 7.2-rc6 drove a coordinated pass through wireless and peripheral drivers, with compatibility updates landing for uwe5622, rtl8723ds, rtl8852bs, and radxa-aic8800, plus a broader rewrite of kernel configs and patch sets for the new baseline. Rockchip received targeted fixes including RGA3 upscaling flicker correction, scoped rk3576 HS400 DLL calibration, RK808 clkout cell naming, and a switch to CUBIC congestion control as the default. Description Introduce a driver that leverages the virtual poweroff feature of Trust OS for rk322x that allow Power On with IR remote controller KEY_POWER. It brings the board into suspended state (ie: "virtual poweroff") on shutdown and resumes power when the user pushes KEY_POWER of the remote controller. This is for current 6.1 and edge 6.5 kernels on rk322x family, but it could be possible to extend to other rockchip socs with minor changes. The driver may need some polishing here and there, but it already very usable. To be enabled, it requires the ir-wakeup overlay. How Has This Been Tested? Description All ethernet network names start with en, not just e. This is how predictible network interface names work in udev/systemd. :D Commit a57f4e2cf00da902610a6640507797e6eff071e5 already prevents managing other interfaces, for example docker and vpn interfaces (which should not be managed by netplan), but this makes it even less likely to match a wrong interface name. Khadas VIM4 single board computer was first unveiled last October with Amlogic A311D2 octa-core Cortex-A73/A53 processor, 8GB LPDDR4X, but it’s only been launched today, and you can now buy the Khadas VIM4 board for right under $200. It is an upgrade to Khadas VIM3 Pro launched with Amlogiv A311D hexa-core processor a few years ago, and our testing in Android 11 revealed the main benefit may be the upgrade GPU that delivered a 67% boost in 3DMark, but CPU multi-core performance and memory bandwidth will also see some benefits over Amlogic A311D, even against in overclocked systems like ODROID N2+. Here’s a reminder of Khadas VIM4 specifications: SoC – Amlogic A311D2 octa-…

Once upon a time, people tried to avoid STM32 fakes and clones, but in a world where companies are allegedly purchasing washing machines to extract a few unavailable components, people have started to look for alternatives, and last week I wrote about the Geehy APM32 family of STM32 clones. But I had never heard about Flashchip Microelectronics FCM32 microcontrollers, and they are even not that easy to find in search engines, so they must be relatively new. The company appears to make both FCM32F clones and FCM32H derivatives with no direct equivalent STM32 part numbers, a higher clock frequency, and faster flash. For example, the FCMF030F4P6 will match the specifications…

Description https://github.com/armbian/build/commit/5dee9ee935703a559992478fa8045b464af72b50#commitcomment-111988535 Rockpi4 is using BL31 blobs to build uboot, so it should get configed with BOOT_SCENARIO="tpl-spl-blob". If BOOT_SCENARIO is not declared it will be only-blobs by default, which will not build tpl/u-boot-tpl.bin and spl/u-boot-spl.bin needed by spi image creating. So it's better to declare BOOT_SCENARIO="tpl-spl-blob" just like rockpro64. I don't have rock4 board so someone has to confirm this fix. How Has This Been Tested? The single-board computer (SBC) and embedded computing market is seeing steady expansion, with a projected valuation of $3.6 billion USD by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6–7% ¹². Growth is largely driven by the rising demand for edge computing, IoT, industrial automation, and AI-enabled systems. ARM-based systems dominate the market due to their low power consumption and cost efficiency, accounting for over 40% of deployed SBCs ¹. However, RISC-V is emerging as a compelling open-source alternative, particularly in industrial and academic sectors, while x86 remains important for legacy and high-performance use cases ². Asia-Pacific leads global g…

HC32L110 Arm Cortex-M0+ MCU is found in a minuscule 1.59 x 1.436 mm CSP16 package that should make it the world’s smallest MCU. LilyGO T-HC32 is one of the first boards with the HC32L110B6 microcontroller, and it is now available for $8.98 on Aliexpress including shipping. The board offers really basic features with two buttons, a WS2812 RGB LED, and two-row of ten pins each for GPIOs and power signals, plus a 4-pin header for SWD programming. There’s nothing really special about the board or its price, except for the MCU’s size that’s barely discernable from a discrete component, and much smaller than the 7x7mm ESP32-PICO-D4 system-in-package shown in the photo below for…

Two years ago, we reviewed CrowPi 2 Raspberry Pi 4 laptop designed for STEM education with embedded electronics modules and Letscode software with step-by-step tutorials to learn Scratch and Python programming. I found it quite good, but many people were mostly interested in having a Raspberry Pi 4 laptop, and the price tag was a bit high at the time. That’s probably why Elecrow has now designed for CrowPi L laptop shell for Raspberry Pi 4 based on the CrowPi 2 but without all the electronics modules, and with a built-in battery to operate more like an actual laptop. Description u-boot v2022.07 and up failed to build with helios64 code call to spi_get_bus_and_cs whose previous signature has been renamed _spi_get_bus_and_cs (note the underscore). Note that this new function is not available in v2022.04, but I guess Armbian does not require its code to be backward compatible. No JIra report I know of. Description Bumped legacy, current and edge kernel. Legacy - 5.15.127 -> 5.15.130 Current - 6.1.47 -> 6.1.51 Edge - 6.5 -> 6.5.1 Fixed compilation of xradio and as its working fine, disabled cw1200 driver that I added for edge last week. Refreshed kernel configs. Also uwe5622 patches needed for orange pi 3 lts were not being applied as least kernel version was set to 6.0. Moved it back to 5.15. Not sure if it works though will test next week once I receive my orangepi 3 lts. Also for edge kernel, enabled rtw88 based drivers and disabled their corresponding legacy counterparts.
