Description Fix uboot booting from zstd compressed BTRFS. uboot logs before fix: Found U-Boot script /boot/boot.scr ZSTD_decompressStream error 7 3252 bytes read in 41 ms (77.1 KiB/s) ... SCRIPT FAILED: continuing... Error 7 means "frame parameter window too large". It looks like uboot's max window size specification on decompressor init is totally wrong (compressed data size is used as max window size). Zstd default max window size is 128MB, but I'm unsure is it good idea to malloc 128MB in uboot on each BTRFS extent decompression. So I have capped minimum window size to 128KB - it should be sufficient for BTRFS as max compressed extent size is 128KB. How Has This Be…

Description When booting U-Boot for rockchip64 or rk3588 devices, the error Failed to load '...-fixup.scr' pops up. This PR fixes this error by checking if the file exists before trying to load it. This PR partially fixes https://github.com/armbian/build/issues/6398 Unfortunately, I was not able to fix the error with missing kaslrseed (even though it may only be cosmetic). Note: U-Boot uses Hush cli language. Not this Hush cli (!) but a different old Hush shell in Busybox which is very badly documented overall unfortunately. I could not find any Hush functionality or a U-Boot command to check if the command kaslrseed exists. Should we include CONFIG_CMD_KASLRSEED for e…

The exFAT file system is about to get faster in Linux 6.2, at least when creating files and directories, with the performance boost especially noticeable on low-end processors. Microsoft released the exFAT specification and announced Linux support in August 2019, which was followed by a new exFAT implementation in Linux 5.7 (June 2020) from Samsung. But people are still working on improving exFAT Linux support, and Yuezhang Mo, an engineer at Sony, committed a patchset for Linux 6.2 that reduces repeated traversal of directory entries to boost the performance of exFAT: After traversing all directory entries, hint the empty directory entry no matter whether or not there a…

Description Enable the current kernel branch for some RK3588 boards, which was introduced in https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/6699 current is kernel version 6.8 at the moment and should stay a more stable alternative than edge, which is often a rc kernel. Intel recently announced they would kill the Celeron and Pentium brands for entry-level PCs, and replace these with the “Intel Processor” brand for notebooks from 2023 onwards, meaning we would get “Intel Core” and “Intel Processor” processors depending on the market segment. The Intel N100 & N200, or more exactly the Intel Processor N100 and Processor N200, Alder Lake-N SKUs may be the first chips with the new branding. They were discovered by Coelacanth-Dream while looking at some Linux boot logs. Smart Bee Designs’ Bee Motion is an ESP32-S2 board with a PIR motion sensor, some GPIOs for expansion, and promising over a year of battery life under the right circumstances. If the name “Bee Motion” rings a bell, it’s because we covered the Bee Motion Mini board last month with an ESP32-C3 processor and a PIR sensor, but no USB port for programming and no expansion ability. It was just designed to be used as a battery-powered wireless PIR motion sensor. The Bee Motion expands the use cases of the solution, although it only features WiFi connectivity, and loses Bluetooth LE. Bee Motion specifications: Wireless module – Espressif ESP32-S2-MINI-1 module with Espressif ESP3…

Description Move tv-box based rk3318-box and rk322x-box target to use u-boot v2024.07-rc5 from v2024.01, mostly for experimentation and also because v2024.07 contains some fixes for rockchip devices explained in this previous PR: https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/6731, in particular we can leverage uboot relocation for rockchip 64 bit devices and rk3328 hdmi/vop/phy drivers are now mainlined. This PR also rework hdmi/vop/phy patches for rk322x and fixes usb issues on rk3318-box The changes does not affect any other board, since none of them actually use v2024.07 of uboot (at the moment of writing the comment, it is still in RC5). The v2024.07 patch directory has bee…

Mirek Folejewski has designed the ridiculously tiny Femto module based on the Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller with a size of just 12x12mm, and still including an SPI flash, a crystal, and a few passive components. We’ve previously covered some really tiny RP2040 boards with the Pimoroni Tiny 2040 and Adafruit QT Py RP2040 boards, as well as the RP2040 Stamp module, but the 12x12mm Femto module is about a quarter of the size of 25x25mm RP2040 Stamp. Femto specifications: MCU – Raspberry Pi RP2040 dual-core Cortex-M0+ microcontroller @ up to 133Mhz with 264kB of SRAM Storage – 4 to 64Mbit QSPI flash I/O – 30 GPIO pins, Reset and BOOTSEL signals, etc… exposed through a f…

PINE64 is about to launch the second generation Pinecil RISC-V soldering iron with the Pinecil V2 featuring a new Bouffalo Lab BL706 RISC-V microcontroller with Bluetooth LE connectivity, optimizations for higher power levels, as well as tentative support for the new USB PD EPR standard (Extended Power Range) working at up to 28V. I don’t solder every day, but when I do, I use my Pinecil soldering iron, as it’s heating super fast and does the job, and in my case, works quite better than the TS100 soldering iron. So it should come as no surprise that the Pincel is the most popular consumer hardware from the PINE64 community (after SOPine modules), and the new Pinecil V2 is…

I had no trouble with my first experience with NanoPi R6S while installing and running the FriendlyWrt/OpenWrt 22.03 image, but that was another story when testing Ubuntu or Debian as the mini PC would not boot at all after flashing the images with eFlasher apparently successfully, but suspiciously fast (under 2 seconds). I spent nearly four hours trying the different images and then the Rockchip Windows utility, but all my attempts failed, and FriendlyElec was not overly helpful. So I decided to connect a serial console to see what was going on. The NanoPi R6S comes with a 3-pin header for the serial console, but it’s not populated. So I soldering one, but not at the top…

Gaurav Singh, acting as Circuit Valley, has designed an open-source hardware USB 3.0 Type-C industrial camera with three boards: one to capture data through a CMOS sensor, another based on a Lattice Crosslink NX FPGA to handle image processing, and finally, a board equipped with an Infineon FX3 USB 3.0 controller for sending the video data to the host. This design allows the DIY camera to be extremely flexible, as for instance, you could keep the FPGA and USB board, and simply change the sensor board for a better/different camera. A 3D printable enclosure is also provided, and the camera supports C-mount lenses, so the lens can also be easily changed as required. Here’s …

Description Add support for RPi5 in our bcm2711 kernel. This is mostly but not entirely based on changes from Raspberry Pi kernel PR 5618. After enabling those options, I noticed that even though hdmi was working, kernel was not able to find the sdcard and usb was also not working. So I had to use diffconfig to compare our configs with the vendor config and enable some more options. Raising the PR so that others can also play with it as well. Meanwhile I will work on getting Trixie Desktop Image running with mesa 23.3-rc5 from experimental repo. As part of that I will split RPi 5 into separate board config until recent version of mesa is made available in current debian …

Intel Meteor Lake processor family is supposed to succeed the 13th generation Raptor Lake chips itself coming after the current 12th generation Alder lake processors. It is scheduled to launch next year (2023), but we already have some details about the Meteor Lake U, P, and H mobile processors from a leak. Just like most Alder Lake processors, Meteor Lake will be hybrid processors with power and energy-efficient cores, but they’ll also feature new LP E-cores which should stand for “low power efficiency” cores in order to further lower the power consumption while a laptop or mini PC in standby mode. Meteor Lake mobile processors highlights: CPU P cores + E cores + LP-E co…

Reinstalling CrowPi OS image It’s the rainy season here in Thailand meaning it’s both hot and humid, and even though I’m not entirely sure it’…

Arducam has launched of Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera module for Raspberry Pi that enables depth sensing by capturing 3D data (at 240×180 resolution) at a distance of up to 4 meters. Arducam has launched several cameras for Raspberry Pi boards over the years, more recently the Arducam Pi HawkEye 64MP camera, but the Arducam ToF camera is quite different, as while it still connects to the MIPI CSI connector of the SBC, it is used to measure distances and depth and display 3D data. Arducam ToF camera specifications: Compatibility – Any Raspberry Pi board with a MIPI CSI connector Effective number of pixels – 240×180 Frame Rate Up to 120 fps (sensor) Up to 30 fps (when process…

Description kASLR is a handy security feature, with no performance downside. (The only downside is some slight inconvenience if you're using KGDB, but if you're the type of person who does kernel step debugging, it seems sane to guess you're already building your own kernel.) If it cannot be enabled due to lack of seed, the kernel will simply print a warning and continue. (See #4306 for more context on what was previously added to get it working on a NanoPi R4S.) I also believe this warning will be useful note for us to add rng support on all devices as time goes on. Example of failure: [ 0.052888] KASLR disabled due to lack of seed Example of success (on a NanoPi …

Aspinity AB2 AML100 is an Arduino Shield based on the company’s AML100 analog machine learning processor that reduces power consumption by 95 percent compared to equivalent digital ML processors, and the shield works with Renesas Quick-Connect IoT platform or other development platforms with Arduino Uno Rev3 headers. The AML100 analog machine learning processor is said to consume just 15µA for sensor interfacing, signal processing, and decision-making and operates completely within the analog domain offloading most of the work from the microcontroller side that can stay its lowest power state until an event/anomaly is detected. Aspinity AB2 AML100 Arduino Shield specifica…
