BOARD: bananapim2plus BRANCH: dev RELEASE: stretch did only boot one time through to the login, mostly get stuck at booting. I assume it must be something with memory config or dts setup tried already 3 sdcards, 2boards so looks like not a hardware issue old armbian (5.21 works fine) Did not see a "memory section" in the dts file? Is it mandatoy? where is the memory size defined or how does linux know it? Here the boot log ( adjust boot params with earlyprintk), maybe someone has an idea? I know this is not the correct area (I have no permissions to post there) but i'm looking to add some basic support for Odroid N2 (and a mainline linux kernel) which others can help utilise for development purposes. Its very early stages as the board was released to testers only weeks ago and for the moment only vendor uboot is working so what is best practice here for Armbian? The old Odroid C2 way of things with uboot might some back for a bit as much as I would like it or not. Baylibre and Neil Armstrong have made a very good start (Thanks Neil!!!!) with alpha style patches for 5.0 and N1. Although there priorities will be working to impleme…

Hi! I’ve been trying to build a kernel with custom settings for a couple of days now, but am facing some issues. My build setup is a virtual machine (running in VMWare Workstation Pro v15) based on the mini.iso image that's recommended in the Armbian documentation (and post here in the forums). The target is an Odroid N2+ SBC. There was no apparent issues setting up the build framework, installing git and cloning the repository. I then executed the compile.sh script and manually set the kernel configuration via the menuconfig interface that pops up. This however yielded an output image that, surprisingly enough, does not use my supplied configurati…

Hi Armbians, (If this question is already asked/answered please help me find the link.) I need the "ceph" and "rbd" kernel modules for my orange and banana pi. I am starting with the most recent images released: Armbian_4.5_xxxx_Debian_jessie_4.2.3. What are the minimum required steps to build the additional kernel modules? Where is the source tree for that kernel build (4.3.3-sunxi)? I would prefer to build directly on the PI (as opposed to x-compile) but either is ok. I tried a few things, including git clone of Igors "lib" project with build scripts. Runnig that pulled a kernel source tree: "sources/linux-vanilla/v4.3.3" which I am able to use to…

Currently supported boards by this patch are: A20-OLinuXino-Lime A20-OLinuXino-Lime2 A20-OLinuXino-Micro With their own modifications the count is 14 different configurations. Why this is possible: All boards uses the same DDR freq - 384MHz. The routing is almost the same All the boards have small EEPROM capable of storing the configuration Major differences between the boards includes: 5 different ethernet PHYs Different pins used for USB phys Different pins used for MMC card detect Different p…

Hi all, I have a bit of an odd application, but given the recent effort being put into UEFI boot, I thought I'd ask for some help. I have a Gigabyte R152-P30, which is an Ampere 80 core, single socket server. Flash drive boot works just fine, but nand-sata-install onto the server's NVMe SSD has been troublesome. I've tried several permutations of having partitions and not having partitions on the NVMe drive, but none seem to actually create a bootable result. I see on the generic armbian image page that it suggests creating an EFI partition which I do (nvme0n1p1). It then proceeds to leave that partition empty. I also have another btrfs…

Hello, I've got an Orange Pi Zero (Allwinner H2+) and an .img 4GB with OS for it and some custom software in the image. I have source code of this custom software and need to compile its modified version and build/change the .img with my changes, and load it all into the Zero. 7zip opens the .img, I can see that it has Armbian Jessie with legacy kernel. QEmu on Ubuntu coudn't mount the .img, is it possible to emulate the image, or should I modify my software on the device itself? How it could be done? I need some help with development for Zero and an existing .img. Thanks in advance.

I am having trouble with my SPI LCD, which uses driver panel-mipi-dbi It works great when I use a minimal Armbian image, but with a desktop image it doesn't work. This is because package "plymouth" does something in the ko loading order: it loads panel-mipi-dbi too early. Plymouth provides a graphical boot animation. The driver depends on a binary file /lib/firmware/panel-mipi-dbi-spi.bin (but the file name could change depending on the DTS) At boot time, I saw that the panel-mipi-dbi.ko is loaded BEFORE the EXT4 in the microSD is mounted... and the binary file is not in the initrd.img-version (checked with lsinitramfs) …

Hi, I've built my own Ubuntu Armbian image for the NanoPi Duo so I could use Ubuntu Snaps without classic confinement (The pre-built images don't seem to have SquashFS Compiled in the kernel). The image seems to be working perfect. However I've noticed one thing which I'm not sure if it's the image or a generic armbian issue but I've noticed that every time I reboot it the mac address updates. I'm using it for a server so having it generate a new IP each time I need to reboot it for development is a bit of an issue. Is there a recommended way to set a static one or such?

I received at least one PM so far that I did not know the answer to. So, rather than all of us spend a lot of effort duplicating info, I thought maybe good idea to compile these in one place. Especially as we have an influx of new Board Maintainers at the moment. I also encourage people to stop by IRC and say hello. I shall also endeavor to copy the most useful bits from IRC into this thread as they come up. Maybe later can be distilled even further into some docs page or ...? Anyway... So, first up: Q: How /what checks/tests to run? A: OK, I guess I thought armbian/autotests was more about that (long in deve…

Hello, I would like to use armbian on a custom board with an arm processor. I' am a beginner and I don't know many things about o.s and board. My questions regards what issues will I have to face? Why I can't just install it like i do with desktop? Why I need to customize it? What things I need to customize? Is O.S customization an "easy" job or it will take months? What are the advantages of starting with armbian instead of starting from ubuntu (xenial)? What are the critical component of a board (what need customization)? Thanks in advance.

I was hoping that while moving to ASUS Tinker Board from a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ I would still be able to use my Google Voice Kit AIY (v1), but it looks like Armbian right now supports v2 only? I tried installing everything needed, but all I got were loads of error/not found messages. May I hope to be able to use the kit by some workarounds or do I have to stick with the Raspberry in the meantime? I am not really willing to spend extra money for some USB solution and I would like to fix it so that I can learn something new.

I think I'm finally managing to understand this Armbian build system. It's an amazing piece of work! However, after the build, many source files end up owned by the root user. There's just a lot of activity going on "as root" that probably doesn't need to be run with that privilege. Disaster seems just one build script error away. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a simple way to avoid this (without resorting to virtualization of the build environment). Has this not bothered anyone else?

Hello, I'm new in this forum with my Banana Pro I got on christmas. Before I used a Raspberry so I gained a little experience with Linux. For Raspberry nearly every question is asked and answers you could find a lot in internet. But the BananaPi is quite new and so sometimes it is hard to find answers. Could some one advice or point to documentation for these tasks On some images the first boot is automatically restarted probably due to the filesystem expansion. I would like to do it myself or detetch some not yet done trigger file. Secondary avoid the forced account creation on first login. I have a bootstrap task which I start by using the external usb media which does all these things and starts my application install process. But to avoid the restarts and apt-get locks the plain image should not do things automatically... example on raspbian my process takes around 15minutes but installs all my required tools.

Hi all, I am new to kernel development, and I found an old ASUS tinkerboard. I want to give it a second life with some fun projects. The project I am building is another IP KVM, so I bought an HDMI to CSI module. I have no idea about the clock value to put in the dts file, so I just copied some values from the ASUS kernel source. From the driver code drivers/media/i2c/tc358743.c, it shows that there are only…

For nand: 1. I boot via sd card 2. mount /dev/nanda /mnt/nanda 3. rm /mnt/nanda/script.bin 4. cp new_script.bin /mnt/nanda/script.bin 5. umount /mnt/nanda 6. reboot Again, nothing happens. Sometimes I get in trouble building a new image. Hi, After 2 tests with recent images (5.77) with debian stretch for s912 (balbes ilmages) and dev image for pineh64, I get the same issue when configuring locales. I selected fr_FR.UTF-8 in armbian-config and I also ran manually dpkg-reconfigure locales and locale-gen, but I ended each time to default locales settings (ANSI_X3.4-1968). Only the LANG variable is set to fr_FR.UTF-8 and all LC_XXX variables are set to C. To solve this issue, I have modified manually the /etc/environment to set LC_ALL=fr_FR.UTF-8. Does anybody else have this issue and is it specific to debian? With a 5.75 stretch image the locale configuration worked well.

Dear all, I occasionally have a full /var/log at startup on various boards, probably because the logs are not rotated /vaccuumd at boot (we had a thread about this in the old opi1 forum). Good morning I have a BPI M1 and M1+ currently running an image from https://banana-pi.org/. Everything works, except it's Ubuntu 16.04. Since yesterday, I've been testing the Armbian images, which are great and up-to-date, but none of them recognize the SATA connection on my SSD. ` fdisk -l ` shows no SATA SSD. With Ubuntu 16.04, the SATA connection is recognized with both SSD and HDD on the BPI M3. Can someone please help me? I'm completely lost. Regar…

Since I've been asked recently why Armbian doesn't ship with F2FS by default I thought let's have a look again what to gain from F2FS (a filesystem specially designed for use with flash media by Samsung few years ago). For a history of F2FS discussion please use the search function: https://forum.armbian.com/index.php?/search/&q=f2fs Armbian fully supports F2FS partitions for a long time now but we don't provide OS images with F2FS for a couple of reasons: F2FS still doesn't support resizing so our default installation variant (ship with a minimized rootfs that gets resized on first boot automagically to the size of SD card / eMMC) wouldn't wo…

Hi, running Armbian Ubuntu on Nanopi Neo2 and it is working really great. I would like to implement HPN-SSH but I can't compile any of the OpenSSH versions against OpenSSL 1.1.x present on system. Any idea if OpenSSL 1.1.x can be safely downgraded to the latest OpenSSL 1.0.x release? I would use for example the method described here Not sure if OpenSSL 1.0.x would break anything on the system or not? Thanks for your help and advise!

I have several users following my move Linux to SATA on the Banana Pi guide using Armbian with Kernel 4.1 and they are saying that uEnv.txt on the boot partition isn't there. Is this a bug or is the procedure different for armbian? Can you shed any light on this?

I'm trying to create a custom Armbian image based on the User Configurations documentation. I can see that I can install additional packages by editing `userpatches/lib.config` and adding entries to the `PACKAGE_LIST_ADDITIONAL` variable, and I can work with custom files like scripts by placing them inside `userpatches/overlay` and accessing them in `/tmp/overlay` via `customize-image.sh`. My question is, does `customize-image.sh` support the below commands given that it executes in a chroot environment: NOTE: Some commands below require `sudo`, but because we're already in a chroot environment, I assume we can run them without `sudo`. 1.…

However, I just found out it doesn't have a monitor out, and I don't know how to access it via USB. So I had an idea: The 2g IOT has TX, RX, GND connections, and so does my Pi PC... Can anybody tell me How I can use the Pi PC to run linux commands on th 2g IOT? I don't have a Usb-ttl-uart connector, and it's veru hard to get one on my region... Thnak you very much.

As bookworm is stable now I want to update my odroid HC2 from bullseye to bookworm? Any experiences welcome. I know this is not supported. But in principle it should work. I did the update from buster to bullseye and that worked perfectly (see link to threat below). I would just do the same for the new update. But maybe there is one special fact to remember that wasn't necessary for the last update. Jürgen

Ever since patchfolders were created for different branches and different board families it has become more and more a nightmare to maintain these folders and keep them clean. Instead of taking the approach to clear one or more of these folders by myself, last but not least due to lack of necessary skills, I was thinking maybe I can provide some tools that make such tasks a little easier for somebody else. Last but not least was (and still is) this a perfect opportunity to pratice with my quite new Python skills. https://github.com/EvilOlaf/refactorpatches What this script basically does is break down all patches in a certain folde…

It seems the Linux kernel 5.8+ on aarch64 is incompatible with the U-Boot from 2017, at least on the RK3328 boards. This apparently affects the Rock64 as well as my own Renegade. Essentially U-Boot gets stuck on "Starting kernel..." In this post https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=14657&start=10 they fix it by recompiling u-boot, newer version from upstream In addition to the existing rock64 defconfig, it seems that the defconfig for the Renegade was finally upstreamed on May! https://github.com/u-boot/u-boot/commit/bab972948e152e468fa5ab34764769fc4cddcaab No more 2017 U-Boot from rockchip for me, perharps... In my opinion ntp should be replaced by chrony. Benefits of Chrony include: 1. Faster synchronization requiring only minutes instead of hours to minimize the time and frequency error, which is useful on desktops or systems not running 24 hours a day. 2. Better response to rapid changes in the clock frequency, which is useful for virtual machines that have unstable clocks or for power-saving technologies that don’t keep the clock frequency constant. 3. After the initial synchronization, it never steps the clock so as not to affect applications needing system time to be monotonic. 4. Better stability when dealing with temporary asymmetric delays, …

I found it very confusing that Armbian doesn't seem to follow the Ubuntu/Debian traditional scheme for naming kernel modules: linux-image-*, linux-modules-* and linux-headers-*. I need them to cross compile out-of-tree kernel module in `schroot`. Armbian seem to have only `linux-image-edge-rockchip64` and `linux-headers-edge-rockchip64`. What's the reasoning behind such design decision? Moreover, I've noticed kernel packages incorporate all the logic that make the board bootable, instead having more generic kernel binaries and relying on `flash-kernel` tool that both Ubuntu and Debian widely use. I wonder why not? What are chances in future `linux-im…

I created a Wheezy and Jessie image. Whenever I try extracting the Jessie image, I get a CRC error. I am using 7zip. I tried extracting the zip also using Windows Explorer (Win10) and it also runs into an error. It seems like there might be an issue with the Jessie images being created. I cleaned my output folder and created a new clean image and still run into the same problem. This is using the latest libs and creating a 4.2.3 image (the default settings in the lib config). FYI, the Wheezy image extracts without any problems. Any ideas why the Jessie image is corrupt? Thanks.

Hi, Thank you for your interest, you won't be disappointed. You have probably read that the developer want to do some changes - and some of this changes are now ready to get tested in the BETA's of armbian. Do not test with your 'production' SDcard unless you have done a backup ;-) Once done that, please go to 'armbian-config' System switch to BETA (Nightly), do an update/upgrade, reboot, check if your system still performs as before. If it does work like before - please let us know and post your 'armbianmonitor -u' link If it doesn't work, please try a reboot, check if the problem is reproduceable and if so explain the s…

Hi, I need to modify the kernel to enable the USB networking ability for my network of development boards. (currently 1master & 10servers) we need to use usb connections for networking functionalities. My question: is it possible to modify the linux kernel without compiling a whole image from scratch. We are now developing a network of mashines and are thinking ahead, doing some planning, to reduce our workload in the future and for avoiding the need to reinstall all the OSes on the whole network. Optimally we would never need to reinstall an image /only reboot a mashine and do meaningful changes on the kernel over ssh. Metaphoricallly speaking…

Hello Armbian Community, I am running Armbian on a Raspberry Pi 4 with a RAID 1 setup for my root filesystem. I've come across a warning in a guide for RaspiOS (link below) suggesting that firmware upgrades could disrupt the RAID setup. Robert Alexa's Guide on GitHub Given this, I have a few questions about handling Armbian kernel updates in a similar RAID configuration: How are kernel updates managed in Armbian when using RAID for the root filesystem, and are there any known issues similar to the one described in the guide? What precautions should I take when applying apt upgrade to ensure that my RAID remains bootable? Is…

Hi, I'm using banana pi m1+ with armbian legacy kernel. I'm building an application with c sharp and using mono to run in in the banana pi. My application needs to change gpio output levels multiple times while running, so I installed bcm2835 library in the banana pi to control the output level from the application. Using the library, I was able to control those as I want, but I'd noticed that there are default gpio output levels, which are different from each gpio pins. I'm using CON3-P36 and CON3-P38. Right after the boot up, CON3-P38 goes high, while CON3-P36 goes low. I want to adjust the CON3-P38 to go low in the boot up, so that both two have low output as d…

If someone is interested I found the way to have BT working on orange pi Prime. Unfortunately default kernel config is missing the following options and need to be manually recompiled: CONFIG_SERIAL_DEV_BUS=m CONFIG_BT_HCIUART_SERDEV=y CONFIG_BT_HCIUART_3WIRE=y With these changes and adding "uart1" to the overlays in armbianEnv.txt it's possible to use the driver in: https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723bs_bt.git and start manually with: ./rtk_hciattach -n -s 115200 /dev/ttyS1 rtk_h5 to have bluetooth working. Alternatively it's possible to use a modified driver and some sta…

Hello, I am using my Renegade with the Armbian I compiled myself. Now there is only one partition on my system: Number Start End Size Type File system Flags 0.03MiB 16.0MiB 16.0MiB Free Space 1 16.0MiB 5580MiB 5564MiB primary ext4 5580MiB 7620MiB 2040MiB Free Space I want to add a boot partition like Raspberry OS, so I can make some configration on the PC through boot partition. Raspberry OS's partition always like that: Number Start End Size Type File system Flags 0.02MiB 4.00MiB 3.98MiB Free Space 1 4.00MiB 260MiB 256MiB primary fat32 …

On Black Hat 2017 security researcher Nitay Artenstein showed a vulnerability affecting millions of smartphones he called BroadPwn. The bug/vulnerability sits inside the firmware blobs but I didn't pay that much attention since I thought it would be related to recent smartphones and at least the one I use still receives full security fix support now in the 5th year. But when I heard that latest Raspbian release contains a fix for BroadPwn (RPi 3 and Zero W use BCM43438 to provide wireless capabilities) I asked myself immediately a question: http://www.cnx-software.com/2017/08/17/raspbian-for-raspberry-pi-boards-gets-upgraded-to-debian-stretch/#comment-545270 …

Dear Armbian community, I'm trying to make a minimal size Armbian image ( Ubuntu 16.04 with default kernel). Build system works great, but when I'm building the system without GUI (Image wit console interface "server") a bluetooth system doesn't work. I tried to build same system with same configs, but set "Image with desktop environment". In this case bluetooth system works great. I tried to solve this problem by myself, but..... It seems like I can not fix it. So, why I'm thinking that bluetooth system doesn't work. When I'm using bluetoothctl list it is void output. hciconfig -a void output I tried to start systemctl st…

Hello! I do everything according to the instructions, but I get the same error every time: I'm using the latest version of Docker, include my user in Docker group, no spaces in full path to /build directory etc... In the error text clearly states that the required package is not found, but why?? Where it must be found? On another computer it's all fine worked and build, and version of host OS almost the same. I attached two files. The first is the output.log which is obtained with a successful build. I renamed it to builded.log Second is the output.log which is obtained with a UNsuccessful build. I renamed it to not_builded.log …

Hello there, I'm new to this Forum, so please I been trying to run Kodi as standalone music station with Buster minimal and Kodi 17 on it. This system boots very quick and I've been quite happy when I got kodi starting successfully, but it's very slow. It takes several seconds to switch from one menu item to the next. Next I tried to speed up the graphics using this instructions https://forum.armbian.com/topic/1420-opengl-on-mali-gpu-bananapi-orangepi-pc-etc/ http://wiki.lemaker.org/BananaPro/Pi:GPU But failed with xorg saying: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: There is no /dev/mali, /dev/ump or /dev/disp device available. …

I don't want to torture my SD card with full OS image rewrites or compilation on the device itself, so I would like to cross-compile. I just set up a ubuntu/bionic64 VirtualBox through Vagrant using https://github.com/armbian/build Currently, I don't want to build entire image or kernel from scratch but I noticed that compile.sh and related scripts contain many convenience functions and tools. I already started compile.sh once to let it prepare the virtual machine for cross-compile tasks and it successfully installed all the dependencies. I got especially interested in extras-buildpkgs folder. As I understand, I can put my own package d…
