  1. Description As long as the rockchip-inno-usb3 phy driver has been removed from current kernel, remove it from edge kernel as well. This affects only rk3328 devices, but so far none of them has enabled the driver except roc-pc and station-m1; station-m1 dts file has been removed since it does not appear in CURRENT kernel patch directory, roc-pc device tree has been adapted. So far I tested the phy driver a bit going into the OTG journey. It turned out that does not work at all with the dwc3 USB3 core driver; The phy driver presence is somewhat necessary to attach the proper OTG vbus regulator for OTG function, thus removing the driver will probably hinder future OTG func…

  2. Description Recently a patch solved the problem with /var/log.hdd/journal increasing in size. However, the patch also deletes all files created by logrotate. This makes logrotate useless. This patch can at the same time decrease the size of the journal folder and keeps files created by logrotate. see discussion at https://forum.armbian.com/topic/19995-armbian-ramlog-problems-and-possible-improvements/ How Has This Been Tested? I am using the changed file on my system. No problems so far. 6. This also moves the console from UART2 to UART0, because the upgraded loader blob from Radxa only supports console on UART0. The system comes with a pen with five exchangeable stainless-steel nozzles to match the size of components, a foot pedal, and several tactile silicone buttons with RGB backlighting to control the unit. The button on the unit (customized parts bought from Alibaba) allows you to change operation modes, switch between high- and low-power settings, or activate reverse mode to clean your nozzle. It’s also possible to configure vacuum power and LED brightness with the buttons. The foot ped…

  21. If the Raspberry Pi Pico’s 2MB of QSPI flash is not quite sufficient for your needs, and you’d not quite a fan of micro USB ports, the WeAct RP2040 clone comes with up to 16MB flash and a USB Type-C port for power and programming. Another improvement is the addition of a reset button, which can be convenient for flashing UF2 firmware, and the pinout remains the mostly the same. The price is not quite as low as the original Raspberry Pi Pico, but the clone sells for an affordable $5.99 with 2MB flash, while the 16MB flash variant goes for $8.99 with shipping included in both cases. 24. I’ve written the first part of Mekotronics R58 review last month with an unboxing, teardown, and first boot with 3D graphics benchmarks. I’ve now had more time to play with Android 12 on the Rockchp RK3588 mini PC, so I’ll report my experience with the device. User interface and settings As already mentioned, the box ships with Android 12 for TV and the stock launcher. The Google Play store is working, and I had no troubles installing all apps I needed for the review. Most of the settings are pretty much standard. While the first time, I used Ethernet, and also tried WiFi 6 connecting the R58 to Xiaomi Mi AX6000 router. It worked but not without some effort, as initially,…

  25. We wrote about the UP 4000 SBC with an Intel Apollo Lake processor and Raspberry Pi form factor yesterday. But today, I noticed the UP community had put up a benchmarks comparison between the UP 4000 board, the original UP board (Atom x5-8350), the Raspberry Pi 4, and NVIDIA Jetson Nano. They used several of the Phoronix Test Suite benchmarks running on Ubuntu 20.04 (x86) or Ubuntu 18.04 (Arm) on all four boards. The UP 4000 board used featured an Intel Celeron N3350 dual-core processor @ 2.40GHz, the 2GB RAM version of the UP Board, an RPi 4 with 4GB RAM, and a Jetson Nano developer kit with 4GB RAM. As one would have expected, the UP 4000 is ahead in most tests, even t…

  26. MCU boards, including the $1.5 BluePill board, have been used as cheap logic analyzers for years, notably with Sigrok open-source software. So it should come as no surprise the $4 Raspberry Pi Pico board can also be used as a logic analyzer, with one developer claiming it can deliver 100 Msps, or the performance obtained with a 1.6 GHz CPU, thanks to the PIOs from the Raspberry Pi RP2040. Hackaday reported about a Sigrok driver for the Pico last March, but the topic was brought to our attention via a post on Hackster.io about an open-source Windows program developed from scratch to transform the Raspberry Pi Pico board into a logic analyzer capable of 100 Msps. Agustín Gi…

  29. Arduino was already involved in LoRaWAN with its MKR WAN 1300 board, but now the company has started offering Arduino-branded Wisgate Edge Pro and Wisgate Edge Lite 2 LoRaWAN gateways for respectively outdoor and indoor environments as part of the Arduino Pro family. If the names of the gateways seem familiar, it’s because Arduino collaborated with Rakwireless, and is simply using their existing LoRaWAN gateways. As I understand it RAKwireless will provide the hardware and technical support, while Arduino will sell the gateways and other LoRaWAN hardware through its existing customer base, more acting as a distributor. Arduino WisGate Edge Lite 2 indoor gateway specificat…

  30. AAEON has unveiled the UP 4000 single board computer with a form factor and ports arrangement similar to Raspberry Pi 2/3, but powered by a choice of x86 processors, namely the Intel Atom E3900 series, Celeron N3350, or Pentium N4200 all parts of the Apollo Lake family. The first UP Board was introduced in 2015 as a device offering an x86 alternative to the Raspberry Pi 2 with an Intel Atom x5-Z8300/Z8350 “Cherry Trail” processor, but later “UP bridge the gap” boards from the company used larger “Squared” (85.6 x 90 mm) or “Xtreme” (122 x 120 mm) form factors. The UP 4000 SBC brings us back to the original business card form factor but with a boost in performance and vari…

  40. Description Orange Pi 4 and Orange Pi 4 LTS were the last boards using staging USB3 Type-C controller. This PR moves both of them to use mainline driver, so staging driver can be removed from patchset (as suggested by @Tonymac32 here: https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/3953#issuecomment-1172962963) Most of the changes have been adapted upon the same nodes from tinkerboard 2 device tree and GPIOs have been adjusted. Since both opi4 and opi4 LTS share the same hardware, I felt it could be useful to change on both boards. Probably if it works for my opi4 LTS also works for regular opi4; I will do my tests, if @piter75 wants to do private tests, in compatibility with hi…

There's duplicated code and I should focus on a better folder architecture before writing new modules. Still, this is done and should show you can "just convert function into a module in 10 minutes" or something. Signed-off-by: Myy Miouyouyou myy@miouyouyou.fr View the full article

  50. Is RISC-X next? Bao Yungang, a professor and scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the secretary-general of the China RISC-V Alliance, has suggested RISC-V related standard specifications can be bifurcated into a new RISC-X standard independently developed in China for the “Belt and Road” countries. The world has become more complicated with new sanctions imposed nearly every week, and those include not only primary sanctions but also secondary sanctions where non-sanctioned countries engaged in business or partnership with sanctioned countries may be penalized too. This has been around for years, for example, I had to sign a document in 2019 saying I would not…

  53. Description After some experimenting I found a way to flush the journal and maintain logs in tmpfs using /run/log/journal, and only have a softlink from /var/log/journal to /var/log.hdd/journal. Additionally the cached journals are to be cleaned up when /var/log becomes too full. Some logic was needed in cases where the user decides to do Storage=volatile journal logging in /etc/systemd/journald.conf, or when the user or journald with Storage=persistent creates a /var/log/journal folder which will be moved to /var/log.hdd/journal and replaced by the softlink. I didn't find any documentation, so wasn't able to update it. Jira reference number [AR-9999] How Has This Bee…

  54. Once upon a time, people tried to avoid STM32 fakes and clones, but in a world where companies are allegedly purchasing washing machines to extract a few unavailable components, people have started to look for alternatives, and last week I wrote about the Geehy APM32 family of STM32 clones. But I had never heard about Flashchip Microelectronics FCM32 microcontrollers, and they are even not that easy to find in search engines, so they must be relatively new. The company appears to make both FCM32F clones and FCM32H derivatives with no direct equivalent STM32 part numbers, a higher clock frequency, and faster flash. For example, the FCMF030F4P6 will match the specifications…

Most STM32 microcontrollers are in short supply with 52+ weeks lead times and prices going through the roof, so people may be looking into the long list STM32 clones and fakes including APM32F103. 93. We’ve already seen ESP32 WiFI & Bluetooth SoC combined with a cellular modem several times already, and a couple of days ago, I wrote about LILYGO T-A7068X ESP23 board with a 4G LTE modem. Iconic Devices team has made another cellular ESP32 product with the NORVI GSM industrial controller. The DIN-Rail mountable USB programmable controller is offered with a choice of SIMCOM SIM800L 2G-only modem or QUECTEL EC21-G modem adding 3G UMTS/HSPDA+ and 4G LTE cellular connectivity. It also offers Ethernet connectivity, digital and analog inputs, relay outputs, and a small 0.96-inch OLED information display with options varying depending on the exact model. NORVI GSM specifica…

  94. Besides announcing the new Immortalis-G715, Mali-G715, and Mali-G615 GPUs, Arm has also introduced the second-generation of Armv9 cores with the Cortex-A715 and Cortex-X3 cores with respectively a 20% energy-efficiency improvement (and smaller 5% performance uplift) over the Cortex-A710 core and a 25% peak performance boost against the Cortex-X2 flagship core. The announcement also includes a “refresh” of the Cortex-A510 core announced last year with a 5% improvement in efficiency and the same level of performance. The Cortex-X3 will also be used in (Windows 11) laptop processors with the single-thread performance improved by up to 34% in that case. Armv9 mobile SoC (Tota…

  95. Arm has unveiled the new Immortalis family of flagship GPUs with support for hardware-based ray tracing starting with the Immortalis-G715 GPU, as well as two new premium Mali GPUs namely Arm Mali-G615 and Mali-G715. Software-based ray tracing was already implemented on Arm Mali G710 on SoC’s such as the MediaTek Dimensity 9000, but the hardware-based ray tracing in the Immortalis-G715 delivers over 300 percent performance improvements, and only uses 4% of the shader core area. This will be mostly used in games to generate realistic lighting and shadows as can be seen in the “before vs after” video demo below. While hardware-based ray tracing is only available on the Imm…

  96. Description This hack is needed for Radxa Zero to boot from Kingston eMMC. Foresee eMMC (which is what we used originally) appears to be unaffected. No kernel modification is required, which is explained here. Pinging @rpardini How Has This Been Tested? Several affected users including @lanefu had manually flashed a custom U-Boot with this hack and got board booting. View the full article

  97. I’ve tested a few security cameras with human and vehicle detection capabilities, but Reolink has now added animal detection via the KEEN Ranger PT trail camera mostly designed to monitor four-legged animals in the wild. It’s somewhat similar to the Reolink Go Plus 4G camera with solar power support and 4G LTE connectivity, but also offers a 360° view with pan/tilt control, a low-glow IR night vision, a 0.5s fast trigger speed, as well as GPS to track the position of cameras or sightings of animals on the mobile app. KEEN Ranger PT camera key features and specifications: Camera/Video Image Sensor – 1/3″ CMOS Sensor Video Resolution – 2K 4MP high definition (2560 x 1440 @ …

  98. MNT Pocket Reform is an open-source hardware mini laptop with a 7-inch Full HD display, an ortholinear mechanical keyboard, and trackball, that follows the path of its older and bigger sibling: the MNT Reform 2 laptop initially launched with an NXP i.MX 8M quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 module. The new laptop will not only support a similar “NXP i.MX 8M Plus” module but also a range of other Arm modules namely an NXP Layerscape LS1028A module with up to 16GB RAM, the Raspberry Pi CM4 module via an adapter, Pine64 SOQuartz (RK3566, up to 8GB RAM), as well as based on AMD Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA for industrial use. MNT Pocket Reform specifications: Available system-on-modules Stand…

  99. The new "Hello World" module should help people understand the minimum requirements. Note that these requirements will still change over time, given that the architecture is still in alpha stage. That said, having an overview module should help attracting developers more quickly than a lengthy documentation. On the docker side, the dependencies have been slightly improved, but that's actually a part of the architecture I'll have to revise, since one "DEPS" file is not enough for all the various ubuntu and debian versions. I still wonder if I'm going to mimic the 'config/...' folder architecture used for the installer, or if I'll try to shorten it with things like DEPS…

  100. Revopoint MINI is a 3D scanner using high-resolution blue light that’s designed for smaller objects such as figurines, coins, jewelry, etc… that require a higher level of detail achievable thanks to the promised 0.02mm precision. The 3D scanner follows last year’s Revopoint POP 2 color 3D scanner with 0.1mm accuracy for larger objects, and the main differences are the lack of color scanning and the higher resolution most suitable for smaller objects, but also possible for larger objects while holding the scanner with one hand. It would just take longer since the MINI’s single capture range is 118 x 64mm, instead of 210 x 130mm for the POP 2. Revopoint MINI specifications…
