In the first part of Khadas VIM4 review, I showed off the Amlogic A311D2 SBC and some accessories such as the DIY case and M2X expansion board to add M.2 SSD and modem and tried out OOWOW cloud services to install Ubuntu 20.04 server. I’ve now just gotten Fiber Internet at home, so it’s much more practical to test the system, and in the second part of the review, I’ve installed Android 11 on the VIM4 board, checked out settings and system info, and ran some benchmarks. It will be more like a preview since Android 11 is not a consumer-friendly system at this time, and is more designed for people wanting to build their own applications. Installing Android 11 on Khadas VIM4…

Description Setting the display mode in armbianEnv.txt no longer worked, probably because it used an old, sunxi-specific interface. See the commit message (also shown below) for details about this. I'm marking this as draft, because: I'm not sure if we should reuse the disp_mode variable, or maybe use a different name (video_mode?) to make it clearer that the values it accepts are of a slightly different format (would also help to see that older documentation does not apply to this option). This fixes just sunxi, which I've been able to test only on a single board (Orange Pi PC). I'm not sure if similar changes are needed elsewhere (see last point in commit message). …

STMicro VL53L8 multi-zone direct Time-of-Flight (dToF) sensor doubles the ranging performance of VL53L5 sensor – up to 4 meters – or reduces the power consumption by half when operating in common conditions. STMicro ToF sensors are some of the most popular devices to accurately measure distance in real-time, and the earlier VL53L0X and VL53L1X sensors integrated a single photon avalanche diode. STMicro VL53L5 changed that with multi-zone support (up to 64 zones), and VL53L8 FlightSense sensor builds on the solution with improvements in terms of range and efficiency. STMicro VL53L8 ToF sensor specifications: Low-power 32-bit microcontroller running the firmware 940 nm invi…

Description Most of Realtek drivers have a bug: P2P IE not passed to AP beacon. This causes problems, when P2P-GO looks like a regular AP. All P2P capable devices can't see my P2P-GO in the list. Also this changes is totally safe, because affects only P2P-related code This patch contains my patches to the original driver repo: jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux#87 jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux#88 But the owner is too busy to review that :( How Has This Been Tested? WaveShare Touchscreen Driver Fix (Odroid) Description A number of other WaveShare screens also use ID: 0eef:0005 and therefore the patch used to enforce the VU7 driver breaks these other screens. This was the purpose of the "disable_vu7" env boot param which correctly defaults to true. However, this is ignored in boot.cmd + the patches for the kernel reverse the changes made by Hardkernel to fix this problem. I have corrected the problem by removing 0eef:0005 from the driver enforced ignore_list and changed boot.cmd to allow the "disable_vu7" to function correctly (adding usbhid quirk when set to false). Description This is to fix wrong DRAM size detection in Orange Pi Zero 3 board with 1.5GB DRAM. Currently they are not able to boot as they detect 2GB DRAM, so after applying this patch they will boot normally. Other boards with 1GB/2GB/4GB DRAM will continue working the same way with this patch. This patch would only be applied to u-boot v2024.01 release. I will provide other patch for u-boot v2024.04 and newer. How Has This Been Tested? [X] Build image for Orange Pi Zero 3 board, flash devices with 1/1.5/2/4GB DRAM and power on with serial cable: logs will show the right memory size [X] Build image for Orange Pi Zero 3 board, flash devices with 1/1.5/2/4GB DRAM and p…

Banana Pi BPI-P2 Pro is Rockchip RK3308 quad-core Cortex-A35 SBC for headless applications with a PoE-capable Ethernet port, WiFi 5, a USB port, an audio jack, and two GPIO headers for expansion. You may think the Banana Pi guys have gone crazy by calling such entry-level level SBC “Pro”, but that’s because the company previously released the BPI-P2 Zero and BPI-P2 Maker single board computers based on Allwinner H2+ quad-core Cortex-A7 processor, so the BPI-P2 Pro is indeed an improvement albeit with some caveats. Banana Pi BPI-P2 Pro specifications: SoC – Rockchip RK3308 quad-core Arm Cortex-A35 processor @ up to 1.3 GHz with built-in VAD (Voice Activity Detector) System…

Most of the ESP8266 and ESP32 projects and products we cover here use the Espressif microcontroller as the main chip, but ESP8266 started as a WiFi module meant to be controlled with AT commands from a host device. But there are still “legacy” products that may benefit from connecting to the cloud, and Espressif introduced the ESP-Hosted for that purpose in 2020, and recently released a next-generation ESP-Hosted solution (ESP-Hosted-NG) specifically for Linux hosts. The solution is available in two variants: ESP-Hosted-FG (First generation) exposing an Ethernet interface to the host and suitable for microcontrollers and Linux hosts, and the ESP-Hosted-NG presenting an 80…

I’ve now had time to play with TwoTrees TS2 laser engraver after doing an unboxing and providing assembly instructions last month, so I can report my experience in this review using LaserGRBL program and MKSLaser mobile app. Note that this is my first laser engraver, and I’ll detail the many issues and mistakes I’ve come across so it might be useful to other beginners. Testing TS2 laser engraver assembly Before doing some engravings and cuts, we’ll have to test the TS2 to make sure it was properly assembled and we can operate it normally. The company is recommending the open-source and free LaserGRBL or the paid Lightburn program to control the TS2. I went with the former…

Description This PR adds a board config file for RPi 5. While on it, the PR also removes dependency on flash-kernel. Instead some custom scripts are added into the bsp package for installation of updated dtb, kernel and initrd files. Using both rpi4b and rpi5b will produce images compatible with rpi5, but the image created with BOARD=rpi5b will not run on older hardware. The kernel config, patches etc are shared between both boards. To prevent creating new family for RPI5 specific kernel, I have added support for something I call kernel variants. This is basically going to be almost same kernel with extremely small changes that doesn't justify creating new family and yet …

Besides announcing the new Immortalis-G715, Mali-G715, and Mali-G615 GPUs, Arm has also introduced the second-generation of Armv9 cores with the Cortex-A715 and Cortex-X3 cores with respectively a 20% energy-efficiency improvement (and smaller 5% performance uplift) over the Cortex-A710 core and a 25% peak performance boost against the Cortex-X2 flagship core. The announcement also includes a “refresh” of the Cortex-A510 core announced last year with a 5% improvement in efficiency and the same level of performance. The Cortex-X3 will also be used in (Windows 11) laptop processors with the single-thread performance improved by up to 34% in that case. Armv9 mobile SoC (Tota…

In the first part of MECOOL KP1 smart projector review, I checked out the package content, projector design, and integrated HDMI stick running Android 11 TV, before going through the setup wizard, and trying the projector with Android 11. I’ve now spent more time with the device, so I’ll report my overall experience. The best way to install the projector is probably to mount it on a ceiling or a wall, but in my case, I just placed it on top of a shelf itself placed on top of a table to adjust the height for a comfortable viewing experience from our comfy seats. As we’ve seen before, the projector will boot directly to the Android 11 TV launcher from the included MECOOL KD…

Espressif ESP32-P4 is a general-purpose dual-core RISC-V microcontroller clocked at up to 400 MHz with AI instructions extension, numerous I/Os, and security features. It also happens to be the first microcontroller from Espressif Systems without wireless connectivity, and as such, it should probably be seen as an alternative to STM32F7/H7 or NXP i.RT Arm Cortex-M7 microcontrollers/crossover processors, and likely offered at a significantly lower cost. It should also offer lower power consumption than other ESP32 chips thanks in part to a third RISC-V core clocked at 40 MHz that can keep the system running while the other two high-performance cores are down. ESP32-P4 key …
