See conversation in this commit for background The current default, Next, Dev naming convention for the kernel source trees is confusing, and a bit inconsistent. I think it's time to rename them and provide clear definitions of what they are supposed to provide. I'll start with some ideas here: Vendor This Kernel is currently called Default . The Vendor kernel would be the BSP-derived kernel or vendor maintained kernel. Typically there for basic functionality early in a boards life. Armbian can supply patches for these kernels LTS This kernel is currently called Next. The LTS kernel would follow a LTS version of …

I got a little problem I interrupted the first lines of the compile.sh and now I do get the error: root@core2duo(192.168.6.19):/home/guido/build# ./compile.sh EXPERT=yes bash: cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device bash: no job control in this shell I did found out that when entering the command "exit" this shell will close and the normal menu driven compile gui does start, but maybe anyone could give me a hint to resolve this issue? Many Thanks in advance

Hi Igor, hi team, we are using Armbian since the the first version. We only using it with Banana Pi and Banana Pi Pro. Yesterday I wanted to build a new image for our BananaPro projects, but unfortunately there is no support for Banana Pi Pro anymore. Why? Is it possible to continue supporting this board? What is the difference to the Banana Pi? You still support Banana Pi. Thanks. Steffen

Hi, I used armbian build many times to create my custom orangepipcplus images without any problem until now. It was working perfect. But, it started to fail today and couldn't build the image. To prevent any mistake, I created a new Oracle VirtualBox VM by using Bionic minimal iso and follow the steps on https://github.com/armbian/build but still no luck. It still gives same error and fails. I try to build by options "Full OS image for flashing", "Do not change the kernel configuration", "next Mainline (@kernel.org), "xenial Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 LTS", "Image with consol interface (server)", "Standard image with console interface" for orangepipcplus and withou…

Hi, I'm looking for the simplest way to provide a custom uboot configuration to the Armbian build system. I have read (I think I did not miss something obvious) the documentation pages how to customize Armbian build, but the doc is mostly focused on specifying alternate source version or applying custom patches, while I only need a way to specify an already existing uboot config (generated with make menuconfig from the existing, installed Armbian sources). What would be the best way to tell Armbian to use an alternate uboot configuration? Thanks, Emmanuel.

I've been working on a project to boot a custom kernel on my NanoPC-T4. I haven't gotten too far though because as soon as I make the smallest change to the source, everything goes to hell (see below). I've built 3 images following EXACTLY the same process. All I did was change the KERNELBRANCH variable in userpatches/lib.config to point to different branches in the same repository. For completeness, here's my lib.config (which simply points to my fork of ayufan-rock64/linux-mainline-kernel): KERNELSOURCE='https://github.com/ethDreamer/linux-mainline-kernel' KERNELBRANCH='branch:BRANCHNAME' Here's the script I wrote to ensure everything was built exactly the …

I try to build a customized image as described in https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_User-Configurations/#user-provided-image-customization-script and by using the template with the OpenMediaVault example https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/master/config/templates/customize-image.sh.template The goal is to build an image who auto-execute an initial setup script after being flashed and frist boot. The device has connected RGB-Leds and an OLED I2c Display on the GPIO pins. It should give color signals durring this initial setup, and then show system parameters (especially the DHCP-Address) on the oled screen *without* having a keyboard and HDMI-Display c…

Can we add .editorconfig to https://github.com/armbian/build ?!

Hi, I am adding support of my board to armbian framework and I have several questions: 1. I added my u-boot & kernel but when I build package for kernel, it creates linux-image-4.14.98-sabre_5.94_armhf.deb instead of linux-image-sabre_5.94_armhf.deb so I have to remove version from from file name in compilation.sh or image creation process would fail. Is it possible to define name of .deb package? I guess I just missed something in my kernel config file. 2. u-boot & linux-image packages are installed successful but I have to add default links to kernel & device tree files by hands or update u-boot scripts by hand. Is it p…

In my project I would like to create Armbian ISO that has only the packages that are really needed for system itself and literally few I need for my application. Just to use smallest possible SD card and not update packages I will never use. Regardless how I configure build at the end I got 1GB image. While I know it is possible to go down to 100MB using Ubuntu bionic and latest kernel. Shall debootstrap use configurable —variant option? For me “minbase” would be perfect. But it does not change anything. Shall I put into lib.config my version of PACKAGE_LIST? Still a rootfs is forced to download. No success. So how to strip do…

Is it possible to download debian sources for the armbian kernels? If so where are these located?

Playing with BUILD_MINIMAL I had to several times run compilation script for the same board / system / branch. To speed up verification I thought: what is a point to constantly build u-boot / kernel? So I added CLEAN_LEVEL option to not delete generated debs. I have noted that from one hand I can disable cleaning of (for example) kernel deb files, but from other hand if there is repository update no new deb is produced. And the idea.... or is this already implemented somewhere? Build of u-boot / kernel is initiated when no deb file exists. fetch_from_repo function knows if the repository is updated. What is fetch_f…

I hope you can understand my question just from the title but here's more information in case you need it. BACKGROUND ON MY END GOAL IN CASE YOU HAVE ADVICE: I'm attempting to create a hardened linux image for running on my nanoPC-t4. I gotta give you guys props because Armbian appears to be wayyyyy ahead of the alternative distributions I checked out (gentoo/arch/lubuntu) in terms of support/customizability/documentation for ARM development. As a first step, I'm trying to build & boot a hardened Linux kernel. After some googling, I settled on this repo as my best option for free & open-source hardened kernel sources (unless anyone has a better suggestion)…

Armbian firmware is a repo holding all firmwares used by Armbian releases. files/firmwares in this repo are directly copied to /lib/firmware in release images. I don't know which firmware is used by which device, but some of them are put in wrong place. eg: for Broadcom Bluetooth firmwares, firmwares should be in brcm/ folder, but some of them are not in this folder. is there any plan to add firmware build support in build script or simplely put firmwares in right place.

A thought occurred to me while watching my machine sync a bunch of repos while running the Armbian build script, and I couldn't help wondering: Could we put the board support patches into their own repo separate from the build scripts themselves? More specifically: board support for "Boards of Interest" to the Armbian maintainers would be in whatever "official" repos we dedicate, I recommend separating per board family or SoC board support for CSC goes into, predictably, a CSC repo board support for EOL boards can be spun off into their own repo TV boxes go into a TV box repo Advantages: Supporting every pet …

We all know there are several shortcomings which causes mess in the config files and prevent simple implementing of more complex scripting. In order to make build system future proof and to cleanup the exception mess, which is virtually everywhere, I decided to start working on a part of the build system. Now the concept works and it is not that far to be mad if idea is bad packages/extras was moved into this, then board support package and (for now) Cubietruck and Tinkerboard hacks from config/sources/ All others have to be implement into packages and their scripts. It's one time job and it will be much easier in the future, with new boards or functions. …

@Igor Could we imagine another mechanism than to use git as an "upload front-end" ? Using git as some kind of spool folder is really not ideal. Release WIP and CSC images from their own page with very specific limitations, including, but not limited to: no kernel or u-boot updates, ideally with the kernel and u-boot package names modified with -unsupported- Explain these are demo snapshot images, potentially even package a different wallpaper that has -unofficial- or something similar watermarked across it. Maybe even use the default WM theme.

As far as I can tell, many, if not all, targets generate an identical postinst script for the linux-headers package by patching scripts/package/builddeb. A search of the Armbian build repo for "Compiling headers - please wait" produces 33 code results. This means that improving the postinst script (for example, as discussed here) requires updating 33 patch files. I'd be happy to help improve the situation, but I'm unsure how to proceed. Could we have a global postinst script for the linux-headers package, and somehow copy it into place? or must we use a patch file?

I've been doing a little housekeeping with github issues and PR's to eliminate noise or bring closure. I've created a STALE label for issues that lack closure or don't have clear actionable items and closing. Hopefully that makes them easy to revisit later if one is interested. I've also posted some follow-ups on a few to try to get things moving and merged a few PRs while applying extreme discretion. Let me know if I do anything you disagree with or want me to back off. I'm trying to be mindful of everyone's work.

Hi, while toying around build system for Odroid C1 I saw that toolchains for arm-linux-gnueabihf where "old" as we are at "gcc-linaro-7.2.1-2017.11-x86_64_arm-linux-gnueabihf" since the 7.3.1 looks like it is not available for this platform. So I did some changes in lib/general.sh and added the following as a fast hack: "https://releases.linaro.org/components/toolchain/binaries/7.4-2019.02/arm-linux-gnueabihf/gcc-linaro-7.4.1-2019.02-x86_64_arm-linux-gnueabihf.tar.xz" "https://developer.arm.com/-/media/Files/downloads/gnu-a/8.2-2019.01/gcc-arm-8.2-2019.01-x86_64-arm-linux-gnueabihf.tar.xz" Then I modified the configuration files fo…

This might be more targeted towards security, but building Armbian should not be as a root/privileged user... https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_Build-Preparation/#how-to-start OpenWRT builds fine as a normal user account, does not need elevated access. Also - FWIW - the local build directory should be armbian, not build - too many other things use /build. @Igor-- thoughts here?

Edit: Uh i guess it should be in the "Development" section instead ... but I can't find how to move the topic :s Hellow, thank you very much for all the work achieved by the Armbian project. I am using Armbian to build images (using https://github.com/armbian/build ) that I provide to users, with custom packagers installed via userpatches and it works pretty well ! I am guessing this is some sort of stable / testing / unstable, b…

First, I'd like to say thank you for creating this. I have a Pine64 board and have built and loaded an Ubuntu Armbian build on the board. I'm now looking to develop custom software which will include a custom audio driver and custom audio software. I anticipate this means one or more custom kernel modules and custom user space software. I've read through all the documentation and will begin experimenting, but thought I'd check to see if somebody has created a cookbook style recipe for the following: 1. Kernel development: incrementally modifying the kernel, building and deploying on the test board. I can see deployment through the created .deb files, but…

First. Thanks for so great work in the ARMBIAN community. Any word of gratitude will not be enough. I have been installing Linux on different SBC. Some of them are supported by ARMBIAN, others not. There are some that never will be supported (as the Parallella 16). And the ARMBIAN process it is very clean for the already refined machines. However, when trying to bring up some other machine, it is complicated to understand what to do, how and where, as the process have been evolving for a long period of time. Recently I began to work with @chwe on the BPI-R2, and my first job is to make the nand-sata-install to work. So, I prepared an image to check this, to s…

I need customization in configuration file for: a) DISTROS=("jessie" "xenial" "stretch" "bionic") b) ${SCRIPTPATH}config/armbian.key I want to make patch for it, but I need a few decisions: 1. Should I use lib.config as the configuration source? Maybe we prefer a separate file? 2. Can I unify RELEASE_LIST=("xenial" "jessie" "stretch" "bionic") from build-all and DISTROS=("jessie" "xenial" "stretch" "bionic") from repository.sh into one common parameter? 3. Do we accept the name for the parameter: GPG_PUBLIC_KEY=config/armbian.key?

Tried even secondary copy (another clone) that i would run in docker containers just to see if that was the issue but outcome seems to be the same. 1. Every time i start ./compile it pulls Linaro toolchain and fails to verify its signature. Looking at the files https://dl.armbian.com/_toolchains/ it seems that linaro toolchain has GPG signature in ASC file where as others have checksum. Am not sure ... zh@acus:~/armbian$ ./comp…

1. What is the purpose when compilation errors are sent to a common output and then branched to a file? It turns out a million lines. It is reasonable to have only compiler error messages. 2. What is the purpose when the kernel-source package is built with include the folder /.git/? It is not traditional 3. Why folder with sources not cleared fully before compilation? git commands: git reset --hard HEAD; git clean -df guarantee a clean sheet before starting work

I saw bionic image for download, so I thought I would build my customized image for OPI PC based on Ubuntu Bionic and 4.18.y kernel, so I have some questions: 1. Is Bionic fully stable/supported for OPI PC? 2. Is kernel 4.18.y supported? Is it sufficient to set KERNELTAG="v4.18.7" to build it? Or I just has to stick with 4.17.y?

I have machines available at work, but I loose quite a big amount of time fighting with proxy issues. I also have VM available with proxy almost correctly configured (some protocols/ports don't work, like for adding gpg key), but the disks aren't big enough. At home, I have network without any proxy, but it's not that good... So, I was wondering if I could try and build Armbian on the cloud... for free. I tried several websites like google cloud and other services offering Docker, but I haven't found any with enough disk space. Is anyone of you building in the cloud? Thanks.

hey there, compilation noob here. I want to build my own image via vagrant and set it up already, because Armbian is the only OS* which provides an integrated option for an encrypted rootfs (preferrably on another drive than the sd-card, because of performance) without manually fiddling around. See: https://github.com/armbian/build/issues/947 My plan is to build it with the optional config, as written in post 2 of the link above: CRYPTROOT_ENABLE=yes CRYPTROOT_PASSPHRASE="MYSECRECTPASS" CRYPTROOT_SSH_UNLOCK=yes CRYPTROOT_SSH_PORT=2222 But I don't know where to put the optional build options and it's not clear to…

I want to override some configurations from $LINUXFAMILY.conf in SOMEBOARD.conf/wip/csc. One way is to provide $SRC/userpatches/sources/$LINUXFAMILY.conf, but I don't like this approach. I want to make these modification permanent. Maybe move the specific configuration from the family file to each board file, but with will not work with big families. Any ideas or comments? Thanks

I saw @zador.blood.stained was doing some housekeeping, so I wanted to open the discussion again about what to do about it in the future. We've obviously demonstrated what you "don't want to do". My last comments on this were as follows: We should have temporary per-kernel branches when undertaking a bigger change. This allows wider testing for those who like to build experimental things Makes the creator of the branch responsible for keeping it up to date gets flattened out and merged into "master" or a "next" waiting for a revision bump PR's should be used on anything anyone is not 100% certain of to g…

Today I did build the image for stretch (for M2 Ultra) - but it was a bit strange - because it ended up in a 1.1GB .image file, but the compressed size was only 1.5MB OK, before building the image I got only 6GB free on my virtual HDD - by the last images this did work.... Now I will reinstall my build-system with the double size (60GB against 30GB before) and then I will firstly try to create a xenial image (not stretch which give me the compressed 1.50MB image whcih doesnt boot )

S500 devices (LeMaker Guitar and RoseApple Pi) are the only devices without initrd/UUID support, both are EOS and have only 3.10.y EOL kernel source. I propose creating a tag in the build script and deleting their configuration files along with the code that deals with non-UUID root cases to simplify our code base for upcoming LUKS rootfs encryption support. Any thoughts/objections?

Hello there Maintainers! o/ I have found something while builiding my image and would like to ask for your opinion on that :-) I have built a Docker build environment where things are going real smooth (After some tinkering ;-) In order to save everyone's bandwidth (and be able to do builds while offline), I was tinkering with IGNORE_UPDATES=yes FORCE_CHECKOUT=no compile option. Well. That causes the build to fail, because after the first compile and its patch, a second round with these flags will cause the patch to be applied again and potentially breaking stuffs. I'm circumventing it by moving the p…

Hi Board, I have submitted a PR a few minutes ago to Build repo (https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/927) removing some drivers that WILL NOT load in RK3288, because they are specific to other SoCs / Architectures. I also took the opportunity to convert a batch of drivers / machines to modules, in order to alleviate the kernel size and squeeze some performance (because some of the loaded stuffs does effectively consumes CPU). Well, that's what modules are meant for, right? The patch was crafted to DEV version. Need more extensive Tinkerboard tests (did not test the GUI) and MiQi (not tested at all, I lack the hardware). Just a thought. Over half of the boards we support feature a 26 or 40 RPi compatible GPIO header and all the other boards expose various protocols and GPIO on various pins and headers. Users coming from Raspbian and trying out any of our boards expect that basics work the same. While it's both impossible and not desirable to be 100% compatible with Raspbian a few things would make transition from Raspbian to Armbian for IoT folks more easy. Simple example: Default user pi in Raspbian has access to GPIO pins -- on Armbian it's currently root only. How's that done? A group called gpio exists in Raspbian, pi is added to it and /etc/udev/rules.d/99-com…

This topic is a response to the growing number of kernels, growing number of boards with... "unique properties", and for the increased complexity of some platofrms (aarch64 and the atf, etc). I think the coherency of the chosen organizational method is starting to fall apart. So just a thought experiment on my part: Currently, we have a sources directory, and the sources file has not just sources, but also executable script functions in it. We also do our patches per SoC, mostly, but the organization is by the thing being compiled rather than by the target, making finding/adjusting a bit cumbersome in some cases. I would propose a di…

Using ./compile.sh, I'm not able to build ATF for the H5. It appears that the problem is that it's looking for the "allwinner-stable" branch, when the branch name on the repositiory is just "allwinner" or "allwinner-testing". Error is at the bottom of the post. I got it to work by changing the branch name in ./build/config/sources/sunxi64_common.inc by setting ATFBRANCH='branch:allwinner-stable' and it appears to work.
