I think I'm finally managing to understand this Armbian build system. It's an amazing piece of work! However, after the build, many source files end up owned by the root user. There's just a lot of activity going on "as root" that probably doesn't need to be run with that privilege. Disaster seems just one build script error away. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a simple way to avoid this (without resorting to virtualization of the build environment). Has this not bothered anyone else?

Hello! I have orange pi zero. I want to install a "clean" operating system - Debian. How can I build a kernel with the necessary drivers, modules and install. Does anyone have any experience installing? The image downloaded from the website debian.org I apologize in advance for bad English.

Hi, just to let you guys know - i'm getting the error (in the middle of December 2018 it was OK). Hi all, I am new to kernel development, and I found an old ASUS tinkerboard. I want to give it a second life with some fun projects. The project I am building is another IP KVM, so I bought an HDMI to CSI module. After tinkering around for a while, I found I supplied the wrong clock for that module: [ 8.469299] tc358743 2-000f: unsupported refclk rate: 50000000 Hz [ 8.483069] kernel BUG at drivers/media/i2c/tc358743.c:593! I have no idea about the clock value to put in the dts file, so I just copied some values from the ASUS kernel source. From the driver code drivers/media/i2c/tc358743.c, it shows that there are only…

I have some patch files, and one of them leads to a .dts file not being compiled. I'd like to find what is wrong with the dtc compilation but I do not know what the exact command the armbian build script runs, so I can't reproduce... Is there a way to make the build totally verbose and see the command being executed ?

Built an Edge/Jammy firmware for a rk3588s2 based system(Radxa CM5). Panthor firmware for GPU G610 is not the right version though in this image. So after boot changed the firmware file, in the /lib/firmware/arm/mali/arch10.8/ folder, to the right version. Reboot produces the same problem though. It does not see the modified file, but still the original, wrong, one. With boot complete and going to the firmware folder the changed firmware is there. I presume that the changes I make end up in an overlay that only is mounted after the boot process. Rewriting the whole 6 GB image, just to change one file, is a bit cumbersome. Is there a way to chan…

Dear Armbian ARM64 6.6.x kernel people: Orange Pi 5 delivers incorrect larger SCTP chunks to SCTP. from lower IP stack in kernel. This can be seen from the computed CRC-32 checksum below. The packet length is right. This CRC-32 checksum process works correctly on OpenSuSE x86_64 Tumbleweed with kernel 6.5.4-1. It also works correctly on Armbian ARM64 5.10.110. Hence we believe the IP code is faulty in the 6.6.x kernel "stable rolling release" from Armbian. This SCTP driver is used in Telecom by companies like Nokia and Ericsson instead of Linux kernel SCTP and we would like to get it working on the OrangePi 5. Shorter packets like the SCT…

Hello, guys, there are custom device tree overlays for some boards in armbian build framework, they are usually created by patches. The spi-spidev overlay for sun8i H3 has some additional parameters that can be set via armbianEnv.txt. My question is about "param_spidev_spi_bus" which is not actually working: is this possible to change the bus on the fly ? Thanks

I’m currently using the Armbian build system to generate images for the Orange Pi 5 Plus. To use the PREEMPT_RT kernel, I set the BRANCH to current, and with the PREEMPT_RT configuration on the 6.12 kernel I was able to successfully build the image and boot it. However, in this kernel version there are no dtbo files for peripherals like can0, i2c, etc., so I’m unable to use those interfaces. If I set the BRANCH to vendor, I can use the 6.1 kernel, but in order to use a PREEMPT_RT kernel I need to apply the RT patch. The RT patch currently provided is not compatible with the current BRANCH, so kernel build and image creation fail. My question is: wh…

Hi, Just yesterday I had to reinstall my server (odroid-xu4 based). I've been using Armbian a few years now. But this time, no matter if just after a fresh install or after firmware and packages update/upgrade, it fails to reboot I no long have the release number of the previous install I've used, but tryied this time with 22.11.1 and 23.01.1 and both fail the same way After a few debuging it turned out to be that the /etc/fstab entry for the microSD starts just with the UUID code, but adding the "UUID=" string to the line begin, solves the issue Don't know when the bug began or where to properly report the bug, so I started this thread, but I'll be gl…

I do not impose, this is only a proposal for discussion. What would users have a single point of entry into the build system (the main armbian GIT/build), I propose to add into the main master branch additional variable that will be used in the script "compile.sh" to specify what branch to use when building. This will allow to quickly combine the main branch to build images Armbian with my fork for assembling the images for TV boxes and boards based on the Amlogic platform. Under the add , my changes do not conflict with the existing system in the main branch and at the same time, users will be able to collect their own versions based on the amlogic branch of a single GIT…

It would be nice for the armbian downloads to have GPG signed SHA256SUMS like Ubuntu. Would it be hard to implement? Because currently the images are distributed in 7z files with a checksum file, nothing currently prevents both from being changed. My bad, I found the guide: https://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_Getting-Started/

I ran compile.sh and got an error message which looked weird It couldn't find the directory .tmp/work-3efc55a6-9478-4508-91c4-5637c4b1e593 and would stop all work I created the directory and then it worked What the heck is that about? My linux x86 system is gentoo and not debian. I do have debian in vmware fusion on my mac. I use it to chroot my gentoo arm systems since it is much faster than cross compiling. For fun I tried again on a different directory and got a new error message This time it is .tmp/work-032fc96c-9055-4b10-86a8-b46b65980a11 The board I try to work with is YY3568 The problem do…

Sorry in advance, but this is a bit of a dive. But, I haven't seen this fully captured and explained anywhere, and think this would be a useful thing to know for anyone who's doing arm64 development on a PC, which seems very relevant here ... I started pulling this thread when moving some software from Ubuntu Jammy to Noble, where the arm64 build process went from 20 mins to 50 mins. When I was done, it below to 15 min, and all I did was poke some flags for qemu's emulated CPU. The TL;DR version is that setting the environment variable QEMU_CPU to something like "cortex-a53" or "max,pauth-impdef=on" or even what I settled on, "max, pauth=off" saves …

We had a custom script that would perform kernel updates. As part of the update, we would look for this package and would make sure it was install. We are erroring out as this package is no longer installed. I am currently using 5.10.34-sunxi and was trying to update to 5.10.60-sunxi. The error is : E: Can't find a source to download version '21.02.3' of 'linux-buster-root-current-orangepizero:armhf' This was working as of a couple of months ago. Hi every devs ! (some of you know that I was on other duties those past months, mainly constructing my new house and moving in it, but I'm now back to Armbian builds those recent days after more then 6 busy months) I've noticed yesterday that USB1-DRVVBUS/PD7 was not activated any more in my recent build, although the fix-many-orangepiwin-dts.patch should take care of that and this one is successfully applied. After digging the issue, I've found out that the sunxi64-hdmi-thermal-dma-pmw-enable.patch is reverting many of those, probably unintentionally, and since this patch is applied after the first one, things are revert silently. …

Can anybody tell me How I can use the Pi PC to run linux commands on th 2g IOT? I don't have a Usb-ttl-uart connector, and it's veru hard to get one on my region... Thnak you very much.

Hi all, Please excuse what you may feel is an ignorant question. I may not be posting in the right forum topic, but I'm a newbe struggling to ditch the tyranny of Windows after 40 years and move over to Linux. This is my first use of an Armbian image. I have OMV 5 installed on OdroidHC4 using Debian 10 Buster and am trying to activate hwclock to support system suspend states. The HardKernal site specifically says the board capable of this and OMV has appropriate supporting menu options. I've added the RTC shield pcf8563 hardware (with a good battery), but like so many I've not been able to get the system to recognize the clock on RTC0; it times out wa…

Hi, I'm trying to solve a problem here. I have a Pine64so board with LTE module plugged into the USB and a battery back up. With the battery drained to 0%, the board will not boot up with the LTE module plugged into the USB port even with a microUSB power supply, because LTE is drawing too much power. But with the battery slightly charged or the LTE module unplugged it boots up just fine. I know that USB power is enabled by the u-boot, because with the Armbian SD card ejected, when I plug in the microUSB power supply, the board doesn't automatically provide power to the USB port, and the battery charges by default. So I'm trying to figure out where in the uboo…

Hi. I recently installed an Armbian 25.8.1 noble to an ODROID XU4 with CLOUDSHELL2. All is wonderful, except one thing. I can't make the small TFT work. Two Questions: How do I force Armbian/build to rebuild the kernel ? - Is there a `./compiler.sh` flag ? And where does the kernel get cached ? - Is it cached online ? - is it cached on kernel, kernel version, and kernel config hash ? I am trying to get a proper handle on Armbian/build. BTW: There really needs to be a `kernel` tag on Armbian Forum's - `Create New Topic`.

Hi guys, Since I'm out of GPIOs I would like to reuse the Debug UART0 RX/TX in "release" if no serial module is attached. I'm using a nanopi Duo2 but that question applies to the general strategy. The NanoPi UART0 RX can be used as PA5, PWM output. I did already play successfully with overlay files for other purposes so I know a little how that works. Can I create a overlay with shared usage, and depending on the loaded module (tty*) the RS232 is operating, or when this is stopped i can use the PWM out? Is this "Shared overlay" in general the right approach? If yes could someone point me to some hints ho…

Hello. For the past month, I have been working on fixing, updating, and rewriting the hardware crypto patch for RK3588. I've done so much work on it that I'm considering submitting it for review to be added to mainline kernel. I needed hardware cryptographic acceleration for a small project running on my Kubernetes ARM cluster. I noticed that Armbian is still using rk35xx-montjoie-crypto-v2-rk35xx.patch, so I decided to give it a try, but unfortunately the results were quite buggy. I took a closer look at rk35xx-montjoie-crypto-v2-rk35xx.patch and discovered a fairly large number of bugs and potential improvements. I then spent the past month rewriting and updating th…

Hello Armbian Community, I am running Armbian on a Raspberry Pi 4 with a RAID 1 setup for my root filesystem. I've come across a warning in a guide for RaspiOS (link below) suggesting that firmware upgrades could disrupt the RAID setup. Robert Alexa's Guide on GitHub Given this, I have a few questions about handling Armbian kernel updates in a similar RAID configuration: How are kernel updates managed in Armbian when using RAID for the root filesystem, and are there any known issues similar to the one described in the guide? What precautions should I take when applying apt upgrade to ensure that my RAID remains bootable? Is…

I am coming from a yocto build for a dev board. I had to make u-boot patches, kernel config changes, and custom DTS tree. I'm trying to adapt this to Armbian, one step at a time. I started with building am image for sk-am62b.conf. I did not expect u-boot to boot from correctly. I was glad to see console messages, but expectedly, u-boot didn't continue. I made a new board config for this, duplicating sk-am62b.conf, but changing a critical line I made to get this to work previously. TIBOOT3_FILE="tiboot3-am62x-gp-evm.bin" Now, the boot process gets through u-boot and loads the Linux kernel. However, the kernel halts because it cannot find…

Hi. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask. I was basically running my Radxa Rock 5 ITX home server on Armbian, on the edge upstream kernel for a long time. Somewhere during the 6.19 release candidate kernel series an instability arised, where the machine would hard lock "at random", so I switched to the current kernel since, which to this day remains on unaffected 6.18. But from time to time I try with edge again, and the instability is still present with the 7.1 upstream kernels. Moreover, with the load the machine has I can consistently trigger the lock up just by ssh-ing into the machine once it's been up for 10 minutes or …

Hello Armbian community, I am working on adding support for a new RK3568 board to Armbian. Besides the board support, there are some hardware-specific kernel driver patches, for example: - RS485 driver modifications - TP2815 related driver changes - GT9xx touchscreen driver changes - Other hardware-specific drivers These drivers are only required for this hardware platform. What is the recommended way to maintain these driver patches in Armbian? Should they be submitted together with the board support? Or should they be maintained separately and applied through: userpatches/kern…

The network connection is confirmed to be normal. I can successfully download the kernel source using git clone, with a download speed of around 3–5 MB/s. However, during the Armbian build process, the kernel source fetching stage always fails. I have tried both full git mode and shallow clone mode, but neither can complete successfully. Is there any recommended solution for this issue? Is it possible to configure Armbian to reuse an existing local kernel source tree or adjust the kernel git download process? Thanks.
