Hello, I've finally gotten around to writing the GitHub Actions based Linux Kernel Shallow git trees exporter. It's very simple, a single shell script and GHA workflow. It prepares shallow bundle (and ready-to-go .tar too) everyday on a schedule and publishes to GitHub Releases. Please take a look https://github.com/rpardini/armbian-git-shallow - theres a README that shows how to use the bundles outside of Armbian. If this is a good idea, I'd move it to armbian/kernel-git-shallow in GitHub. And then I'd start using those in armbian-next first as a test ground. I mention I few people I know are interested in the subject @Igor and…

Hi - Would it be possible to switch dev builds to 5.8 rc kernels? It looks like megous is already prepared for it ( atm rc1 ). Certainly I do realise the massive work filtering DT duplicates and applying fixes, etc ( the usual ) does come in here ... But rgd H6 this 5.8 kernel should hold important additions rgd: CPUFreq (DVFS), IOMMU, and MsgBox ( as well H3,H5 ) Therefore kindly requesting to skip 5.7 in dev and go straight for 5.8 which allows +/- two months of testing wich should be perfect for upcoming "Caple"-release in August.

This patch modifies the sunxi-dev/bananapi-r1-switch-driver.patch to work with the changed phy/mdio interface in 4.5. Hello, Although Armbian is not the only one, most of the orange PI PC linuxes are not include XFS support so I had to go through a time consuming process to recompile the kernel by a guide which only works on Ubuntu 14.x (doh!): http://www.orangepi.org/Docs/Building.html Here is the kernel I made for the OrangePI boards, for those who miss the same thing: http://www.filedropper.com/orangepihwpacktar

Since kernel 4.18, on my rk3288 tv-box USB devices have always had problems when plugged in after the box boot (ie: USB device not working at all) I found that the problem is described and solved by this patch: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10535905/ Applying it to latest 4.18.4 kernel the functionality is restored, and I can't see similar patches in rockchip-dev. I think it should be applied to all rockchip SoCs at least until it gets merged into mainline

I have Armbian Jessie running on a Orange Pi Lite board and the login script is showing the local loopback ip (127.0.0.1). It appears to be doing this because /etc/update-motd.d/30-sysinfo calls ifconfig -a and pulls the first ip, which in this particular case, is the local loopback. For the orangepi-lite, i wrote the following command in customize_image.sh and it fixes the problem in this case. sudo sed -i "s/ifconfig -a/ifconfig wlan0/g" /etc/update-motd.d/30-sysinfo It basically changes the script to pull the ip address from wlan0 instead of whatever one it finds first This could also be called from the command line for the same effect instead of during compilation.…

Hi! I have been using Armbian for long, but I am new to the Development/build system. I have however set the environment and I can build images. Now, I want to create a custom Armbian image with the following customization: - Separate ext2 partition for boot - second partition for LVM - Root Filesystem in Logical Volume and fixed size. - Cloud Init, with an extra partition for NoCloud Datasource. I see in the documentation how to install new packages, but not how to partition the SD card. How can I change the partitioning? On the other hand. Can I just build an image without compiling the Kernel? …

Hello, once I developed my appliance based on Armbian with Kernel 3.4. And the goal of the appliance was to work as custom USB gadget. The appliance was based on sunxi_usb_udc. Now, after big delay I returned to the need of bulding a new appliance with similar functionality. As far as I understand, there is a problem with UDC module in kernel 5.x. Am I right? Can I build my custom system based on legacy (v.4.x) kernel to workaround the problem or there is a better suggestion with available information for fast startup? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Hi Wondering if anyone knew the algorithm that assigns mac addresses to orange zero. Is it based on something static/cpu id /...? or it is purely random. Will this mac change over time or after it is generated, it will stay the same? I have one zero that mac is pretty static and another changed mac after I did a upgrade. If I want better control of the mac address, what's the best way to make it static? this is on the mainline -jerry

Earlier today I pushed a fairy large patchset containing various functional improvements of many boards. If you have Allwinner board and some spare time: 1. Build DEV image/kernel with https://github.com/armbian/build (you need to add EXPERT="yes" to the config to unlock) 2. Install DEV kernel from beta repository Optional Defreeze kernel updates Switch to nightly kernel (armbian-config -> system -> Nightly) Reboot Switch to other kernel (armbian-config -> system -> Other -> DEV) When board came up, do some exploration. Most important information is to find out if there is a regression toward ker…

The problem: I want to run my Banana Pi M2 Zero from a battery / powerbank setup. It works like a charm from a beefy powerbank capable of consistent 2A output [1], even with added 5" LCD screen to power at the same time and wireless keyboard transmitter. BUT it does hang up hard, I guess due to undervoltage, when powered from a smaller, weaker powerbank with a single 18650 cell and max output of about 500mA (theoretically 1A but let's underestimate, I'll try to measure it with an oscilloscope). Armbian with 4.19 kernel and Ubuntu 18.04 (but booting in text mode, without any GUI). The hangup occurs during services startup, usually around networ…

Namely the Network Manager. I recently just made a Debian Stretch Image for the ROC-RK3328-CC (Renegade) with the help of this and I would like to know for future reference, how to omit and add software to the final build. The build seemed to go fine and working like a charm, but Network Manager just gives me a headache and every now again doesn't come up during boot. Be real nice if I didn't have to depend on it or remove it after the fact, every time I wanna make a new image. Thanks!

I am trying to convert my recent experience into something more generalized, in order to improve documentation. I already split off into a new page of docs Recovery, now I would like to add a new section to that page about manually replacing u-boot. In my case, sunxi was pretty easy, but trying to generalize this it gets more complex. I am not too familiar, so I researched for a while today and I think I have some idea, but before I start writing I want to make sure I am recommending the right approach. Basically I think I will recommend in 2 parts: 1. Explain how to extract u-boot from deb package after downloading from e.…

Hello I am using a Debian 12 VM on Qubes OS 4.2 to attempt to build an Armbian image for a Rockpro64. As you can see by the build logs, these 3 commands are failing: update-binfmts --enable qemu-arm update-binfmts --enable qemu-aarch64 update-binfmts --enable qemu-riscv64 Then arch-test command output causes script to error out with: arm64: not supported on this machine/kernel So far I have attempted to enter the docker container and manually run the command but I get this error: root@1631353b980f:/armbian# update-binfmts --enable qemu-arm update-binfmts: warning: qemu-arm not in database of installed binary formats. upd…

Hello, I would like to share my experience about development and debugging inside Armbian. On the beginning I tried to use Code::Blocks. But it crashed too many times, mostly during simple file editing. Then I found better IDE - CodeLite. When I wanted to debug a program, I found I have to install GDB. After installing and configuring it, the debugging looked to be possible, but every attempt finished with segmentation fault somewhere outside of my program, even before the first statement in main function was reached. After several attempts, I uninstalled and re-installed GDB and this time found recommended additional component - libc6-dbg. Installing this component fixed…

Hi there! Issue: Installing required package for Python face_recognition takes almost 15-20 hours to install using my Orange Pi One. I tried: - Building armbian image using Virtual Box with ubuntu-22.04.1-live-server-amd64 - 30GB of Disk , 4GB of RAM and 6 CPUs - Edited the /build/config/templates/customize-image.sh and added those commands (see gist link above) to install the required packages -…

My recent RK3588 kernel adventure: - dual-core H.265 (HEVC) encoding working live at full 4K@60 on armbian-build edge kernel (6.19-rc8) for Rock 5B[+] and Orange Pi 5 Ultra. - fix for setting HDMIRX EDID (this didn't work in mainline on any of my tested hardware) This is out-of-tree (practical focus over upstream goals), but it's stable and producing clean bitstreams. Hello everyone, I have a screen of 1280x800 resolution. while connecting the screen to my rockpi-4b, the resolution is set to 1024x768, and there is no 1280x800 option in the display setting panel. after learning from Internet for days, I think the root is that my screen doesn't have a correct EDID information. so I made some changes to let the kernel ignores the screen's edid information and use specified edid file. The resolution is successfully set to 1280x800, the only problem is that the screen display is shaking, as the attached video shows. The edid file's timing settings are shown as below: I tried to change the settings but it doesn't wo…

Hello everyone First congratulations for this project. I just started playing with it recently and I am very impressed. Good job! I am the developer of NextCloudPi, which basically consists on providing Nextcloud images for the Raspberry Pi, but has evolved to other flavours such as docker x86 and docker ARM. It also features many scripts for managing the instance that can be run from a classic whiptail like TUI or a simple web interface. The initial goal of the project is to drive as many people away from dropbox into selfhosting, so there's also a Wizard and I try to ease the process of DDNS, certificates and so on. I am a…

Prior to entering an issue... One of the challenges of using an image based install is how to cover to machine unique items... Good example here is the systemd-machine-id... some systemd units can use machine-id in place of gethostid... https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/machine-id.html It's supposed to be a unique qualifier for installation - but if this is written into the image, it's going to likely be the same for every image out there... Can always regen it on the shell - but this could also be in the first run script... $ cat /etc/machine-id \ && sudo rm -rf /var/lib/dbus/…

recent days I find Chromebook may be better Arm devices with laptop form factor. compare with Pinebook pro, Chromebooks are cheaper, and mass product, and better tested. why no much people discuss how to install 3rd OS to its internal emmc, or reflash its uboot? I have searched on ArchArm forum, only 1 topic. but there actually a way to reflash uboot, and mainline uboot already has support for arm based chromebooks. It should be easy, but why no discussion?

Hi, I am having some trouble to compile the kernel after I have made some minor changes to one of the source files. to minimize recompilation of unchanged code files I chose the following settings in compile.sh: KERNEL_ONLY="yes" SOURCE_COMPILE="yes" KERNEL_CONFIGURE="no" KERNEL_CLEAN="no" to avoid having my changes overwitten by the original files I set FORCE_CHECKOUT="no" # igre manual changes to source I am afraid I have not managed to recompile the kernel using these settings. What happens instead is: (1) the script still tries to sync with the source but produces some error messages: error: Your local ch…

Hi all, please be aware that Pine folks in the meantime understood that recommendations to use WinDisk32Imager, dd and other non verifying burning tools are wrong, tried to recommend Etcher instead (as usual sabotaged by at least their most famous forum moderator) and now use finally a 'branded' Etcher 2.0 beta: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=4481&pid=27520#pid27520 I don't think it's correct to do it this way (and at least the macOS application sucks since not digitally signed and using a wrong so called 'bundle identifier') but anyway. Let's take this for a foresight. Etcher 2.0 uses catalog files in such a way: http:…

Hello, the new kernel versioning scheme consists of the latest git tag and several hashes: https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/main/lib/functions/artifacts/artifact-kernel.sh With boards like odroid-xu4 for which the upstream git is only updated occasionally, this leads to two problems: 1. the generated version is lower than what is currenty getting shipped: `5.4.228-S3043-De511-P0a53-C0750H6842-Bb436` vs `23.02.2` 2. it cannot be guaranteed that the versions go up reliably: 5.4.232 is `5.4.228-S3043-De511-Pc02c-C0750H6842-Bec1c` and 5.4.233 is `5.4.228-S3043-De511-P0a53-C0750H6842-Bb436` While I can understand using the kernel versi…

I believe this question goes to @rpardini as maintainer of patches for Rockchip series in the `build` repo: I'm trying connect camera to Orange Pi 3B (yes, it boots from community support on edge kernels), but spent 2h digging to find no drivers for CSI2 from Rockchip's fork are ported to patches for recent kernels (for example: https://github.com/armbian/linux-rockchip/blob/rk-5.10-rkr6/drivers/phy/rockchip/phy-rockchip-csi2-dphy.c and corresponding device trees to instantiate these drivers). This is a little chicken egg problem as I need recent kernels to have access to open source GPU drivers - they're not present on 5.10 based original system i…

Hi, I hit a problem on pinebook where docker would hang with defunct processes consuming high cpu. A bit of googling turned up a known problem with aufs as the cause, so I grabbed the patches, combined them and created a pull request https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/772 I gave the resulting kernel a fairly good work-out this evening and it seems to be working fine now.

Hello. I am finished Armbian Jammy 22.05 Bulseye edge 5.16.20 gnome desktop on a Rockpi4 (rk3399). When I try to overclock from Armbian-config, it doesn't work. That is, I can enter the application, apply rockchip-rk3399-opp-2ghz.dtbo. Then reboot, go to armbian-config and set a new unlocked CPU clock speed of 2.2Ghz. But instead it is only available up to a maximum of 1.8hz. How can this be fixed? Do I have to create an image from scratch, or maybe there is some trick?

I am working with a Hummingboard that has the 3.14.14-cubox-I kernel on it (was given to me with that version on it). I’ve tried making the module from the git repository (https://github.com/igorpecovnik/lib) and succeeded in building it, but it does not work on my hummingboard as a the module has vermagic of 3.14.14+ while my hummingboard has 3.14.14-cubox-i. Since linux v5.4 armbian_build enables the CONFIG_RT_GROUP_SCHED config option. Some armbian users use the soft real-time features for either real-time audio (jackd), or control (eg. klipper_host_mcu), However, real-time group scheduling, enabled by this options complicates the user space configuration required to acquire real-time scheduling in applications and daemons. Setting ulimit -r or LimitRTPRIO= is no longer enough, it is also required to allocate CPU time for RT task. In a brutal way this can be done as echo 950000 > /sys/fs/cgroup/cpu,cpuacct/{system,user}.slice/cpu.rt_runtime_us JACK documentation recommends using c…

Stumbled across this while working on something else not ARM related, but it's pretty cool - since Armbian is looking at devices that have eMMC, this might be useful https://github.com/pepe2k/u-boot_mod Short story - it's a uBoot with a micro web server that supports flashing images, including uBoot itself - basically it turns things into a bit of a fail-safe as long as uBoot can execute... (those playing with the fire that is uBoot, keep your UART connections handy) Do I have some security concerns - absolutely yes... but no different than the UEFI that is on many x86 boards these days.

I'm curious as to why we explicitly specify CPUMIN and CPUMAX values in the Armbian board configs, for most/all boards... These values of course propagate their way into the MIN_SPEED and MAX_SPEED settings in the target /etc/default/cpufrequtils configuration file (e.g., see lib/makeboarddeb.sh). If these values aren't specified, then the cpufreq driver will base its speed ranges on what the underlying H/W supports (e.g., specified via the board DT(s)). So...if the underlying driver configuration provides the supported speed range, then we actually need to specify these values? I ask because I'm running my H5 boards with my overlays t…

I`m working with Linux version 5.4.29-sunxi I´m trying to compile my own char device driver. Hi there, I have now finally managed to apply the RT Kernel patch on the Bananapi. (Original Patch here: https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/3.4/patch-3.4.108-rt136.patch.gz) The patch did not work out of the box and I had a bit of hassle to fix all of the rejected bits. To me the Banana Pi is best suited for audio production since it is very affoedable and it already comes with a usable audio out. To get the full benefit of the RT kernel patch it was necessary to thrn also reduce the buffer size of the inbuilt sunxi -codec audio driver. I can now play a synth using a buffer size of 512 samples glitch free. Here are some numbers: ansum@ba…

First of all, happy 2017! May Armbian be the great OS it is, forever more. Now, I wanted to compile Armbian from scratch so I can see if I manage to hardcode some overscan into the tv module (it seems there's no way around it), but for some reason I can't seem to get the compilation going. I downloaded ubuntu, put it in a VM (so fresh, aside from VMWare guest tools) with 60GB storage, got it up to date, and tried to compile Armbian (since I don't know how to compile a single module). Steps taken: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install git git clone https://github.com/igorpecovnik/lib --depth 1 cp lib/compile.sh . sudo ./compile.sh Then "Ke…

I'm writing from a limited perspective, so constructive criticism appreciated. In this thread, I'm recording some thoughts about how the OS gets from files into the memory of various boards, and what might make this more unified and easier and/or more flexible. Current U-boot My knowledge comes from the mvebu64 and rockchip64 families. At this time, the board boot process starts from code in the processor that attempts to find u-boot, and u-boot runs a script from its environment that searches for a UEFI application or a boot.scr file. They call this "Distro-boot" Armbian uses the boot.scr to load an uncompressed kernel image and a compressed initramdisk, alo…

tonight as I was about to head to bed, I noticed low buzz coming from my Tinker board as if my fan was running. Sure enough it was running, I checked top and a couple processes were trying to read from the cifs share and had the cores pinned using 100%... I did some testing, I could read files from the cifs share but whatever I used would hang at the end of the file, cat, cp, etc... I also tried almost everything, nothing fixed the issue until I rolled back my kernel from Dev (4.14.0-rc1) to Next (4.13.2) then all the problems were gone. I also noticed on the 4.14.0-rc1 kernel booting and shutdown times were much longer... at least double of whats normal, this was true w…

I think we should do exactly the opposite. As soon as the author realizes that his codebase has begun to create stable images for the family\branch, he can invite the most active members of this group to test and fix bugs. That is, errors, changes must be made in this branch. While the master should remain stable and not create problems for the current work.

Hi there, I've tried to migrate from my old 16.04 ubuntu build machine to 18.04 regarding the documentation there is no need for extra packages. I've set up my VM using the ubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso image. Is it solely failing by not using the mini.iso? Regards, Sebastian

We had a custom script that would perform kernel updates. As part of the update, we would look for this package and would make sure it was install. We are erroring out as this package is no longer installed. I am currently using 5.10.34-sunxi and was trying to update to 5.10.60-sunxi. The error is : E: Can't find a source to download version '21.02.3' of 'linux-buster-root-current-orangepizero:armhf' This was working as of a couple of months ago. (Looking at the armbian-config scripts, we are essentially following the same logic. We imagine this script would have the same issues. We tried running armbian-config, but did not have the switch op…

the main proposal of this research is to enable cached apt archives for docker build. first apt cache can be saved by a docker volume, but due to `${SDCARD}/var/cache/apt/archives` is not a constant, then we can't use `-v=apt-cache:${SDCARD}/var/cache/apt/archives` to enable it. so I use `-v=apt-cache:/root/.apt` as a tmp place for apt cache, when need `apt install` in `${SDCARD}`, use `mount -o bind /root/.apt ${SDCARD}/var/cache/apt/archives` and after install finishes, `umount ${SDCARD}/var/cache/apt/archives` this looks perfect, but after I check /root/.apt, everything is gone. I double checked whether *.deb are saved to…

Hi guys I cloned the build earlier with a view to building an image for a rpi5b git clone --depth 1 --branch main https://github.com/armbian/build and build/config/boards/rpi5b.csc was present. I've just refreshed the clone and it's not there - has it been removed for some reason ? Edit It's not on github either - am I going mad ? 🙂

I tried to used AppArmor under the Linux cubietruck 4.4.1-sunxi #10 SMP Wed Feb 17 17:57:20 CET 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux. But I get a kernel panic after i rebooted the system. Some questions: 1. Did you integrate AppArmor into the kernel? 2. Did you use an alternative mandatory access control? 3. Need I an additional kernel argument in the /boot/boot.cmd other than these "apparmor=1 security=apparmor"? 4. Is there a major diffenrece between your kernel and that from danad.de? Unluckily I was not capable of getting a dump from the kernel panic. If you need it, I would take a photo.

Hi anyone else having issue with selecting specific kernel? Adding: KERNELBRANCH='tag:v5.19.16' to build/userpatches/lib.config does not switch. sudo ./compile.sh EXPERT=yes CREATE_PATCHES=yes BOARD=orangepizero2 BRANCH=edge RELEASE=bullseye BUILD_MINIMAL=yes BUILD_DESKTOP=no KERNEL_ONLY=no KERNEL_CONFIGURE=yes COMPRESS_OUTPUTIMAGE=sha,gpg,img CLEAN_LEVEL=make,debs,images,cache Will BRANCH=edge cause conflict?

Hi. I recently installed an Armbian 25.8.1 noble to an ODROID XU4 with CLOUDSHELL2. All is wonderful, except one thing. I can't make the small TFT work. I enabled the cs2 option in boot.ini, but did not solve the issue. Then it turned out the module loader in modproebe.d lokks as follows: options fbtft_device name=hktft9340 busnum=1 rotate=270 speed=35000000 force32b=1 bgr=1 but actually there is no such module (only hktft32 or hktft35, or ili9340 - none of these worked): /lib/modules/6.6.113-current-odroidxu4/kernel/drivers/staging/fbtft# ls -1 fb_agm1264k-fl.ko fb_bd663474.ko fb_hktft32.ko fb_hktft35.ko fb_hx8340bn.ko …

Hi Igor, I'm trying to build and update the kernel for the Lime2 board using the script you provided on github. I'm using linux sunxi 3.4.103. The only changes i've made in the kernel are in the sunxi-codec.c file, where i'm changing the values to some variables which should impact the latency on voip softphones. Here are the changes that i'm doing in "static struct snd_pcm_hardware sunxi_pcm_playback_hardware" and "static struct snd_pcm_hardware sunxi_pcm_capture_hardware" { - .period_bytes_min = 1024*4 + .period_bytes_min = 16*2 - .periods_min = 4 + .periods_min = 2 } The problem is that after running the script i get the tar file with 5…
