Hi all, I have a bananapi and I have installed the debian Wheezy image with kernel 3.19.0. Now, I’d like to upgrade to kernel 4.0.4 to see wether the ananlog audio output is supported; so I downloaded all the deb packages from the website and installed them, but after reboot the system is still using kernel 3.19.0. How can I switch it to use kernel 4.0.4? I guess I should edit something in boot.cmd and convert it to boot.scr, but what should I change exactly? Thanks in advance for your help!

A great 9.30 min review here, pointing out the issues: Cooling, GPIO expansion, no MIPI, lack of SPI support in Armbian? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MzxLYGWQddA Apparently the much discussed Armbian cooling/Vreg techniques were not known to the author. Other stuff is interesting, with comparison to RPi.

Hi all, I need to add some packages to Armbian in the build phase. I tried two ways, both failed: 1. Had run through docs (https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_User-Configurations/), and the suggestion is to add a var PACKAGE_LIST_ADDITIONAL in userpatches/lib.config PACKAGE_LIST_ADDITIONAL="$PACKAGE_LIST_ADDITIONAL watchdog modemmanager iptables iptables-persistent dnsmasq bridge-utils iproute2 openvpn" Building the image I get the following error: [🌱] Using user configuration override [ /home/andrea/armbian/build/userpatches/lib.config ] /home/andrea/armbian/build/userpatches/lib.c…

Hello everyone. From some time ago I´m working in an application that comunicates with some external devices, using GPIOs. With this aim, I´ve programmed my own driver with its methods, whose are automatic loaded at startup. My hardware is a BananaPi m2u, and kernel version is 5.4.35-sunxi. Now, I´ve to read an external HW that has 2 data lines, whose idle state is "high" and once per minute sends a packet of 26 bits of data. One of these lines is a Data0 signal, and the other is Data1 signal. Every pulse is around 100us, and there is an idle interval of about 2ms between one bit and the next. There is no way for data line 0 and data …

Sorry, I know it is a noob question. I want to add something to the "arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3328-roc-cc.dts" file, and tried serval methods to make the patch to build, but no luck: Method1: 1. Directly modify the "arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3328-roc-cc.dts" file 2. Add "CREATE_PATCHES="yes" in $ARMBIAN_BUILD_HOME/build/userpatches/config-example.conf 3. Compile After compiled, I found my modification was not on "arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3328-roc-cc.dts" file. Method2: 1. Command: cd $KERNEL_SOURCE_HOME cp arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3328-roc-cc.dts . 2. Modify ./rk3328-roc-cc.dts 3. Command: …

I am having trouble with my SPI LCD, which uses driver panel-mipi-dbi It works great when I use a minimal Armbian image, but with a desktop image it doesn't work. This is because package "plymouth" does something in the ko loading order: it loads panel-mipi-dbi too early. Plymouth provides a graphical boot animation. The driver depends on a binary file /lib/firmware/panel-mipi-dbi-spi.bin (but the file name could change depending on the DTS) At boot time, I saw that the panel-mipi-dbi.ko is loaded BEFORE the EXT4 in the microSD is mounted... and the binary file is not in the initrd.img-version (checked with lsinitramfs) …

Hello, I would like to use armbian on a custom board with an arm processor. I' am a beginner and I don't know many things about o.s and board. My questions regards what issues will I have to face? Why I can't just install it like i do with desktop? Why I need to customize it? What things I need to customize? Is O.S customization an "easy" job or it will take months? What are the advantages of starting with armbian instead of starting from ubuntu (xenial)? What are the critical component of a board (what need customization)? Thanks in advance.

I don't want to torture my SD card with full OS image rewrites or compilation on the device itself, so I would like to cross-compile. I just set up a ubuntu/bionic64 VirtualBox through Vagrant using https://github.com/armbian/build Currently, I don't want to build entire image or kernel from scratch but I noticed that compile.sh and related scripts contain many convenience functions and tools. I already started compile.sh once to let it prepare the virtual machine for cross-compile tasks and it successfully installed all the dependencies. I got especially interested in extras-buildpkgs folder. As I understand, I can put my own package d…

Namely the Network Manager. I recently just made a Debian Stretch Image for the ROC-RK3328-CC (Renegade) with the help of this and I would like to know for future reference, how to omit and add software to the final build. The build seemed to go fine and working like a charm, but Network Manager just gives me a headache and every now again doesn't come up during boot. Be real nice if I didn't have to depend on it or remove it after the fact, every time I wanna make a new image. Thanks!

Hi all, First place, sorry if it´s a very basic question, I was searching info and reading topics, but I did not found a solution for my problem. I`m working with Linux version 5.4.29-sunxi I´m trying to compile my own char device driver. I noticed that I forgot adding kernel-headers in my build, so I tried to add them via apt install linux-headers-next-sunxi After that, I can see a new directory /usr/src/linux-headers-4.19.62-sunxi but if I´m not wrong, modules compiled with this headers won´t work in my kernel, cause headers version does not match with my kernel version. So, could please …

Hello, fresh installed Armbian desktop OS detects attached HDMI display as full HD with correct resolution 1920x1080. But after some restarts it loads in u-boot with correct resolution and then, on kernel startup switches to 1024x768 and also desktop opens with this resolution without an option to increase it. The armbianEnv.txt file in /boot folder contains string disp_mode=1920x1080p60 and was not changed. Please advise.

I've downloaded the latest stable Release of the source code: https://github.com/armbian/build/releases/tag/v25.8.1 When doing a Build, when it allows you to select the kernel branch: [vendor, mainline, edge], the only edge available for selection is the bleeding edge (i.e. latest trunk version). I've downloaded the 25.8.1 source code, and that's the edge version I want to compile. How do you build an image with the latest (relatively) stable edge kernel, as available in Armbian-Config? (i.e. currently v6.16.1-edge at Armbian 25.8.1)? Update #1 When compiling the image with the edge kernel, it downloaded it from the internet and i…

ROCK64 is a RK3328 Quad-Core ARM Cortex A53 board with up to 4 GB of RAM. Unfortunately it has a non-functional RTC (/dev/rtc0), which is not battery backed. If your board is not connected to internet 7/24, you can not use the NTP or systemd-timesyncd. Therefore you need to connect a battery-backed external RTC module to the ROCK64 header, and get the time via the i2c protocol. The good news is, the GPIO headers on ROCK64 is compatible with Raspberry Pi headers. Therefore almost any Raspberry Pi RTC module will work on ROCK64. But you need to do some tweaking to communicate with the RTC module. I will explain the required steps which worked for me. 1. Buy an e…

Hello everyone, I wanted to propose that the q8 tablets be included in the compilation script, I have several q8 tablets, at the beginning I used my own rootfs, but armbian is fantastic !! counting the modifications I make to the armbian rootfs I think it would be easy, in the firmware repository you already have the majority of hardware such as 8723 and other Wi-Fi chips, with respect to the uboot the templates that already incorporate the main repository work almost perfectly, no I know, could I help, I have the components, the dtb and the compiled uboot, how do you see it? You may have read about the recent (one month ago, but hey, what's a month between friends?) security vulnerabilities discovered in dnsmasq. They have been patched in version 2.78 and, quoting the author: This is a bugfix release, and, amongst other things, addresses a set of serious security vulnerabilities. Update should be mandatory. The dnsmasq shipped with Armbian is a rather old 2.75 and it is enabled by default, so I see this as a rather significant risk. I have compiled the latest version and installed it by hand, following the instructions located here (obviously, with 2.78 instead of 2.76). Is there any chance of getting this package updated in …

Hello. I have troubles with the new version from source. The main reason i compile it from source, instead of downloading pre-build images is to enable CMA in kernel config. Ever since I read through THIS POST a while back, I started digging through the cpufrequtils init script, and was a more or less disappointed with what I found. It's largely a product of the CPUs that were available around that time (eg - Pentium 3). Namely that all cores in the system are the same, and there's should be only one master policy that controls everything. Of course ARM big.LITTLE totally breaks these assumptions, and leaves the script with no viable way to specify different schedulers or frequency ranges for each CPU cluster. It still runs, but not really correctly. For example, you can't set the RK3399 little cores above 1.4 GHz, but that's basi…

Hi, I'm very happy with running armbian on an Asus Tinkerboard. But now I have a little issue: I want to build a kernel module using DKMS. I tried to install the kernel headers, but the latest version on apt.armbian.com is 5.32 and the kernel is 5.34. Is there any solution to get the headers for the 5.34 kernel image? Thanks, Alex

I would like to rebuild ffmpeg, and mpv with additional build options. Is there a posted how-to ? The build environment is different. I am used to pulling down the package source, modify , recompile and build the updated package. Also how would I add plexmedia player to the Armbian build ? I have it working.. just need to add hardware acceleration to ffmpeg and mpv before I package it up and get it into the Armbian build.

Linux 6.12 mainlined PREEMPT_RT, real-time preemption. As far as I understand, one no longer needs to muck about with patches, the kernel can simply be compiled for real-time use with normal compiler flags on any common architecture. This makes Linux suitable for tasks with precise latency requirements, of which there is a lot of in the embedded space. Has anyone tried this on Armbian 25.2 now that it uses the 6.12 kernel? Does it work? How would one compile Armbian with it?

I know that the RaspberryPi cannot use netconsole due to the ethernet connector being driven over the USB bus, and thus not suporting polling (which is needed for netconsole). When i look at my LePotato kernel (4.14.57), I see: # CONFIG_NETCONSOLE is not set # CONFIG_NETPOLL is not set # CONFIG_NET_POLL_CONTROLLER is not set So it is clear netconsole won't work as is. Before I go through the process of building the kernel to enable these, I thought I'd check if I am wasting my time. Is it expected that polling will work? Hello, I'm trying to upgrade Armbian on my little OrangePi Lite, and it's been 3 days at it already. It is stuck at "Compiling headers", and it is not hung, I can use it. It does happen from time to time to all my SoCs, sometimes I prefer to re-dd and reconfigure. So I was thinking, if compilation cannot be avoided, can it be done on another computer? Cross-compile?

Hello, once I developed my appliance based on Armbian with Kernel 3.4. And the goal of the appliance was to work as custom USB gadget. The appliance was based on sunxi_usb_udc. Now, after big delay I returned to the need of bulding a new appliance with similar functionality. As far as I understand, there is a problem with UDC module in kernel 5.x. Am I right? Can I build my custom system based on legacy (v.4.x) kernel to workaround the problem or there is a better suggestion with available information for fast startup? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I have now finally managed to apply the RT Kernel patch on the Bananapi. (Original Patch here: https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/3.4/patch-3.4.108-rt136.patch.gz) The patch did not work out of the box and I had a bit of hassle to fix all of the rejected bits. To me the Banana Pi is best suited for audio production since it is very affoedable and it already comes with a usable audio out. To get the full benefit of the RT kernel patch it was necessary to thrn also reduce the buffer size of the inbuilt sunxi -codec audio driver. A touch of bravery got me to install mainline on my Nanopi Neo using the orangepi one dtb. It worked OK. Today I updated the system and got a nice new kernel 4.9.4 but also had bit of bother in the form of the absence of network devices. It seems there is an issue with the new sun8i-h3-nanopineo.dtb as reverting back to the orangepi one restores that capability. It's all a bit mysterious to me but I do notice that the alias "ethernet0" is absent from the nanopi dts and the configuration of ethernet further down seems quite different. I'd be quite interested in trying a new version of the dtb if someone's ahead of me with this.

Please move this message to correct folder, if I used the wrong one. There is a grave bug in the ext4 FS, which was introduced in kernel around 6.1.55 and is fixed in kernel 6.1.66. The bug is causing data coruption and data loss, like new packages aren't installed properly. A fix was introduced today into kernel, in version 6.1.66 Armbian Bookworm 23.11.1 (Debian) comes with 6.1.63 and, according to my knowledge, is affected. I got an issue from a user on a bash script I am sharing on github. The script is to make shrunk img backups on a running system on a lot of different sbc:s. After some testing on the users side (I did not have access to hardware to test) it turned out the script fails because of the partition table, it is GPT while in the past they have always been MBR (msdos). I downloaded the latest opi5 gnome desktop image and looped it and parted shows it is in GPT. We figured out a way to solve it but my question is: is this because rpi5 uses gpt partition table (I do not own a rpi5 either)? Will this be the future of most armbian builds? …

Hi TKaiser / Igor, FYI i manually prepared a patch for devices that use rtl2832u that i think may interest you to add this patch to the build process. You can patch against legacy kernel 3.4.111 and give users a chance to get their device recognized. Sorry, i can't couple with the automated armbian process yet, i usually do the things manually. I hope this can be useful (and hopefully works for someone). clone here: https://github.com/avafinger/rtl2832 @lex

The documentation doesn't show how to use it, so I looked at the armbian's sources: https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/99815c0a8880d4e04fc64742412632e1d41c1334/lib/functions/image/partitioning.sh#L206 Here they create a string and pass it to sfdisk. In my hook I do a similar row to add two partitions: echo -ne "label:dos\nsize=1G\nsize=1G\n+\n" | sfdisk -a "${SDCARD}".raw --no-reread || exit_with_error "Partition fail." But building of the image fails with message: No free sectors available. Failed to add #3 partition…
