The minimal (Bookworm) torrent of Orange Pi PC2 was only shared by one source when I added it today, and that source is only at 71%. Not sure if this is another person also trying to download and the original source no longer shared, or if this is the original source and it is broken. I can ofc download the file via https, but felt I wanted to let you know.

This may be useful to some of you. I wrote some C code to talk to those common 2x16 LCD displays that are available in various colors from various vendors. My purpose in writing the code was to learn about the device and help document it better for other people to have an easier time using it. In my search for info, I only found poorly documented Python and Arduino code, so I thought I would write a C version and make it easy to read. You can find the code here: https://github.com/bitbank2/LCD1602

Hi there, with the global lockdown, I had to move my "lab" at home... and I have trouble with the infamous WAF. So I moved almost everything in the attic, and would have loved to pull an Ethernet cable from my ISP box to the "lab" Wi-Fi router, but it's not significant other's compatible. As strange as it may seem, the Wi-Fi signal coming from the ISP box is really strong in the attic, so I thought of redirecting the Wi-Fi to the 24 ports switch thanks to a SBC. I don't want the SBC to act as a router, I want to use the router which is in my ISP box, so that I can still interact easily with the machines in the attic wherever I may be in the house. I…

Java Periphery has finally been released! Java Periphery is a high performance library for GPIO, LED, PWM, SPI, I2C, MMIO and Serial peripheral I/O interface access in userspace Linux. This will replace User Space IO. I'm seeing GPIO write speeds of 500K/s from userspace. Compared to User Space IO and libgopid speeds of 2K/s. I switched from JNA wrapper generation to JNI wrapper generation. The build process is much simpler (only single install.sh) and building libgpiod is no longer required. The API follows c-periphery, python-periphery and lua-periphery. This should cover the widest array of SBCs and languages around. Java Periphery should work on Armbian/Ub…

Hello fellow armbianites, It has been put to me that arm based boards require a DTB file because arm works a bit differently than x86. The difference between an arm and an x86 board, is that x86 is standardised and always has the same form factor. When you plug in a device into an expansion slot or port on your motherboard the new device announces itself. All the addresses are known in advance and hence there is no need for a DTB file. On arm on the other hand board design is not standardised. You can design a PCB whichever way you would like and solder any component onto the board that your heart desires. There is no single way…

May end up being a candidate for some FAQ list. Question is.... If a board has a maintainer and the user builds the image themselves using the recommended default kernel/compilation option, why is there no support for the built image? Rationale behind the question is if the user decides to change the kernel build options then there would bo no doubt that the user will be on their own with no support, but if the kernel is built with the default hard built options then there ha…

  28. Hi, I've been looking around for an Arm development platform. Banana Pi seems to be about the best value for money. I've been looking around at some TV boxes. However, I see mixed opinions about these being a option. SBCs seem to be almost twice the price of similar spec Arm TV box. Processing power and memory are mostly my priorities. Anything over 4GB seems insanely expensive. I can do SMD soldering work. So modding at TV box is an option. Are there any options for an 8gb Octa core system that isn't going to cost more than a decent PC?

  34. Is there a good resource for what's currently being developed by the major SBC manufacturers? I am curious about what is being developed and when it is coming out. I'm thinking about expanding my cluster by another 10 or 20 nodes but I don't want to invest now if something great is going to be released soon. I am most interested in FriendlyARM and OrangePi boards as they seem to have a good performance/value ratio around the $35 price point but I am interested in what all major manufacturers are doing. Is there anywhere to read about development? Or is anyone here privy to what's next for low cost ARM based SBCs?

I have been bouncing ideas around with@diozerofor using MMIO in a generic way to achieve fast GPIO for times when performance (bit banging, software based PWM, low CPU latency, etc) is required. This is my first attempt using a NanoPi Duo (H2+) which should work on any H2+ or H3 based SBC. What I've done is write a register mapper, so I can extract the register masks without having to do it by hand from the datasheet. Hand mask making is tedious and error prone. The generic part will come in by externalizing the register offsets and masks. This will happen after I build my next project using an Odroid C2. Also, since the Duo didn't have PUDs, so I could not map those. Tha…

Does anyone have any experience or experiments ongoing? I read that @JMCC did some experiments with TVHeadend. So maybe we can have some research here. Cheers and happy developing

When launching ddd in Armbian 4.5.1, the prompt isn't set properly and the terminal operation inside ddd isn't right. Launching gdb by itself works OK. When I try to load my executable for debugging, I get You can't do that when your target is `None' When I exit ddd, it complains that gdb is still busy. Anyone else seeing this? Why would ddd running natively under Armbian need to know its target when it doesn't need that anywhere else where its used natively? Chris

Hello, [sorry if this is in the wrong forum category] I am a new user and have got my OPi zero running up until the console (starting message), via ethernet. I have used a router with IP 192.168.4.1 as DHCP server, which is not connected to internet. The routing table is accordingly similar to [1] Wifi is not yet set up. When I want to, it should connect to a different AP/router (say operating as 192.168.1.1 seen over wlan0), and therefore also the routes have to be adjusted. My question is: can I delete the default route in [1] while still retaining connection to the Pi via Ethernet? (from the PC which is on the 192…

I've done some load testing of my first prototype power "mezzanine" board (can't say "hat") The voltage drop of powering the RPi touchscreen off of the GPIO while the tinker is on micro-USB is insane, I was reading 3.9 Volts on the USB ports when I ran minerd --benchmark. I may have finally worn out the Micro-USB connector... This is a project for learning the ins and outs of kicad and get an idea of the capabilities of the PCB houses I have reasonably fast access to (Chinese ones unfortunately always get stuck in customs for a week or more on top of the normal shipping and fab times, so the cost savings is lost in time) I have some more interesting thing…

Just a tip for something that has helped me from getting a heart-attack over the many years of online discourse.... Back in the day (ugh-really?) there were only TWO rules for participation in the store-and-forward Fidonet system: 1) Thou shalt not excessively annoy others. 2) Thou shalt not be too easily annoyed. Breaking *either* rule, got you kicked out. Strangely enough, rule #2 was broken more often than #1. And it helps you grow a skin, no matter what is said. Most importantly, it keeps you hacking, and not getting a heart-attack. For Devs, maybe the OpenBSD philosophy can cut through some of the angst: …

  64. Its a just a proposal. It would be nice to have a anonymous telemetry result that summarize boards and armbian popularity (distro, kernel, CPU from /proc/cpuinfo and memory size, board name if available) Another board's popularity source that is also interesting is a poll about boards in use (board name, development tools) Please star/mark this post to make it important for @Igor

I'd like to run a small network server, nodejs, PHP. size is NOT important never turned off => power consumption is somewhat important at least 80 GB of storage, needs SSD support (?), if so, would hope it can boot from SSD 100 Mbps is ok would prefer a score of at least 1000 on Passmark Thank you for any suggestions

I am looking to replace 3 OrangePi boards with a H3 CPU with one board. Every board has a RTL-SDR USB stick attached to it, and the software tends to load up the CPU a lot on at least one core, in some cases the total load is high on 2 cores. To make it all easier / simpler I would like to replace the 3 with one board with enough processing power, but nothing extreme. The goal is that it will be in an enclosure up the antenna mast, POE fed, so not easily accessible! I even looked at the Atomic Pi, but I am not so sure about processing power in that unit.. (I might be wrong though!) Browsing the options online, I saw the NanoPi M4 which looks like a good candid…

What's your choice and why, tips and tricks. I'm using Geany , simple but it does have some problem with multiple files. I also downloaded code blocks but could not set the flags right (-lwiringPi) and left it for now as it is. To lazy to investigate

  73. So I built some fresh Armbian images with dev kernels, and setup ubuntu mate and ran them on my tritium h5, and my le potato... and like I've got slack running in chromium n stuff, and desktop switching is pretty decent... and that's without acceleration.. just good 'ole brute force. Basically my mind is blown that its usable and I'm going to retire my c2d dell desktop that's on my KVM and finally use an ARM SBC as a desktop!

Hi Igor, First of all thanks a lot for all the work that you do, its awesome. I do experience some problems with the latest kernel version 3.4.110 that I compiled with PMP support with the RTL8211E PHY interface. Its something weird going on. I can ping the card but i get multiple interruptions: PING 10.20.104.243 (10.20.104.243) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=1 ttl=61 time=0.362 ms x 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=3 ttl=61 time=0.300 ms 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=4 ttl=61 time=0.276 ms x x x 64 bytes from 10.20.104.243: icmp_seq=7 ttl=61 time=0.246 …

  75. I've posted in the Armbian forums in the past about Kerberos.io video surveillance software. For some reasons it was (at the time) not always that easy or impossible to compile or get it up and running. But: Times have changed (for the good this time!) and I've tried it again on a H3 1GB memory OrangePi plus with kernel 5.4 using a *FRESH and CLEAN* Ubuntu Bionic Server image. I was able to get the Kerberos software 2.8.0 up and running straight away, just by *EXACT* following the instructions on the website of Kerberos.io (Generic installation Instructions page). It takes some time to compile ffmpeg and the machinery module, but it is certainly worth the eff…

  76. One of the board members here wrote an article about a 12 node NanoPi-Fire3 cluster. I found it quite exciting (I don't get out much). It is a couple of years old. It seems to be very powerful yet energy efficient. Is this SBC still the King of clusters? I want to fool around with clusters, cluster software managers and process distributors, and perhaps do some coin mining (if that is feasible). Someone said this board has too little memory for coin mining, that 2gb would be better than 1gb. Pine have a 7 slot clusterboard which takes their PINE A64 (+) "Single Board Computer powered by Allwinner’…

Lately there have been many commits in the rockchip kernel github repository talking about imminent new chips (they have been removed though and the 4.19 kernel last commit "regressed" to 11 Aug 2020), but here there is the announcement of the rk3588: https://www.cnx-software.com/2020/11/26/rockchip-rk3588-specifications-revealed-8k-video-6-tops-npu-pcie-3-0-up-to-32gb-ram/ Enjoy!

  78. I want to get an sbc to make personal server running website with backend for me, so basically JS, Python, and other stuff. I also want to connect my microcontrollers like esp32 to make my custom smart home system, by using camera. Maybe i also could use AI to analize the image. I found one Banana pi M3(2gb ram) for under 10$, so i am thinking whether to buy it. I feel like the deal is great since i can't find other sbcs with such hardware, ram to be specific, but i heard that software support is bad. Is that true for now? Or is it usable? I am also thinking of getting Orange pi one plus(1gb ram), but it costs more and also has less ram. What shoul…
