Hello, guys, I need your help with building an image with kernel 4.15 ("dev") for bananapi m1+ (can't use "next" because I need the new display engine). First of all, I need to transfer patches from 4.14 so that I can create my own overlays. Can you tell me which patches I need to look at , besides "add-overlay-compilation-support.patch" ? Thank you

Hello guys I recently moved my build into VirtualBox in order to protect my host's rootfs from potential corruption. Everything went ok, build is working fine. For my project I would like to share toolchains that Armbian has already downloaded on first start. Is it possible to customize the path where toolchains are stored so that I can point to a shared folder? Thank you

Hi rtl8189FS was added on august and the version at include/rtw_version.h is v4.3.18.1_15373.20151005 At http://linux-sunxi.org/Wifi#RTL8189FTV I see that the recommended repository is https://github.com/jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux/tree/rtl8189fs That repository use v4.3.24_15589.20151023 There is also newer versions, now I'm patching v4.3.24.6_20019.20161107 https://github.com/CGarces/rtl8189FS Any one has tested this newer versions? maybe @martinayotte ?

Just a quick list: It's named completely wrong since it doesn't install anything but transfers an already running installation from one media to another. Main focus on 'without breaking stuff' since transfering a booted/running system is challenging! It's named completely wrong since it's not about NAND and SATA any more (hello Cubieboards and Bananas back in 2014) but eMMC and USB these days (and yeah, SATA too) It's a blind alley: moving the installation from SD card to $somewhere will work. But nand-sata-install is still there, people might want to use it and will fail (though I think that will most probably never happen since once people are h…

I've just spun up a brand new vagrant installation using the instructions here https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_Using-Vagrant/ When I ran compile.sh inside the VM it installed a load of packages as it should, then eventually failed due to dialog not being installed. A simple apt install dialog fixed everything, presumably the build system needs to be updated to install dialog as well?

I added a while back 'free' output to 'armbianmonitor' and 'armhwinfo' to get some monitoring data from real-world installations about swap usage. Armbian uses an emergency swap file of 128MB by default (vm.swappiness=0) which means swapping should be avoided unless really needed. Let's have a look and extract data from +50 support URLs collected within the last months. I piped the output of https://pastebin.com/raw/DjxAX6Rn through while read ; do curl -q "${REPLY}" | grep '^Swap: '; done | sort | uniq -c and this is what we end with: 175 Swap: 127M 0B 127M 1 Swap: 127M 22M 105M 1 Swap: …

Hello, guys, may I ask you to fix the code below so that I can put my custom "sun6i.conf" file into "userpatches/sources/" ? Currently your code makes it impossible because LINUXFAMILY variable is forcibly set to "sunxi" in sunxi_common.inc file. What you can easily do is introducing a new variable so that one can know that LINUXFAMILY was overwritten. configuration.sh -------------------------------------------- [[ ! -f $SRC/config/sources/$LINUXFAMILY.conf ]] && \ exit_with_error "Sources configuration not found" "$LINUXFAMILY" source $SRC/config/sources/$LINUXFAMILY.conf if [[ -f $SRC/userpatches/s…

Hello, guys, I need to set overlay_prefix=sun6i-a31 in armbianEnv.txt automatically. I found that the default sunxi_common.inc behavior does not allow applying my custom file "userpatches/sources/sun6i.conf" where I have OVERLAY_PREFIX variable declared. In the file sunxi_common.inc the variable LINUXFAMILY is reset to "sunxi" for sun6i architecture. My question is: do you have another way to set OVERLAY_PREFIX variable ? Thank you.

Hello, guys, I recently posted a problem with Banana Pi M2 framebuffer - my Waveshare35a TFT display was not working with "next" mainline image. I had messages in dmesg about an SPI data transfer issue. As a result there was no new framebuffer device created on the device. The question was then moved to Development group. Can you give a comment about SPI driver on BananaPI M2 ? Is SPI communication on BananaPi m2 really supported by mainline kernel ?

Hello, guys, is this possible to choose a custom board-specific kernel config located in "userpatches" based on $BOARD variable? I am trying to customize different boards and I have no idea how to provide a specific config for, let's say, sun6i bananapi and sun8i orangepipc when I build "next" kernel, because all of them are covered by linux-sunxi-next.config. It seems like I need to change your scripts but I wouldn't like to.. Thanks.

Hello, everyone, I found a very serious issue with Armbian build framework: build may corrupt your host's rootfs! This has happened to my system 3 times: my rootfs has been totally destroyed without being able to recover it (I used a number tools, like testdisk, etc. All of the tools detected some deleted files but all of those files appeared to be 0-sized). I have delayed reporting this to be 100% sure that it is Armbian build that caused those issues. Now I am, absolutely, because such a problem NEVER happened to me before (I have been using Ubuntu 16.04 for a long time). After 2nd crash I changed my HDD to a brand new one and installed all again …

I made some changes in the build scripts and wanted to ask if some of you may find them useful... ability to use custom skel folder in /userpatches directory support for xdm display manager (with graphical keyboard) selectable display manager in expert mode (lightdm, xdm or nodm) Especially the custom skel folder gives much more flexability for modders to generate images for wip or scs boards. I am currently testing different configurations, all seems good so far. What do you think about these changes? Would a pull request make sense?

Wondering if we should have a release notes/changelog that gets tossed into the image somewhere? Something very simple that we maintain by just updating a text file with a significant commit. (Like changing kernel versions, fixing a known bug from previous release, etc). Maybe toss it up onscreen at first boot. Moving the thermal zones on Tinker made me think that might be a good idea.

This might be close to be off-topic, but I think this is the closest forum for this thread. Since I read that Igor asked if we know any build-farm services (clouds like Amazon's EC3 or the like), I've been thinking about private build farms. I imagine that Igor does not have a large build farm (perhaps some boards are contributing with distcc). Thomas, what is your setup for building Armbian ? (I imagine that you may have a stronger setup). Other developers, please chip in too. What's been in my mind for a while, is to make a low-cost farm, which would perform well and make things easier and quicker for the Armbian team. There…

Hey, I'm trying to lock kernel version to 4.11. The documentation is talking about the variable ARMBIAN_MAINLINE_KERNEL_VERSION, which does not do anything, as the script does not take it into account and still clone the last version of kernel (4.13) I cheat and copy KERNELBRANCH='branch:linux-4.11.y' instead in userpatches/lib.config which seems to do the job. What is wrong then ? Documentation or me ? Thanks Florian

Hello guys I need instructions on how to skip mandatory steps during first load when Armbian requires to login as root and use password 1234. What I need is to have pi account created automatically during sd-image build (with a custom password) and assigned a predefined set of groups. I want Armbian start and auto-login with pi account and run my linuxfb-based full-screen application. It seems like customize-image.sh is the right place to create a new account on target image. But how can I disable that startup poll to create a new user, change password, etc? Thanks

Looking at this: https://github.com/armbian/build/commit/925b8592220a590b09215f08d3f06de6b8fe238d First, I would put most of the dependencies in "Recommends" and "Suggests" sections, otherwise people will be unable to remove non-essential packages they don't want. Second, I would put something like "nodm | lightdm" so you could switch the login manager without breaking things. And third, since we are discussing the desktop packages, personally I think that lightdm login dark theme looks relatively ugly (mostly you can't see element borders for user switcher dropdown menu, it's hard to read a dark font on a dark background, etc.) so mayb…

If I checked the configuration correctly, only Cubox, S500 and Udoo* don't have HAVE_UUID_SUPPORT=yes set, but AFAIK all boot scripts now load the initrd. @Igor can you add and test root by UUID on those boards? Also boot scripts for more boards could use /boot/ambianEnv.txt, I already tested it on XU4 and will try to test it on C2, will anybody be able to test it on C1 or C0 (it has much older u-boot)? If I remember correctly there were some problems either on Cubox or Udoo, but hopefully it can work on most of the left over configurations.

In case anyone else needs help with this. These steps create an oven-baked .img complete with all custom goodies on board from the get-go. 1. rysnc custom code and any other local dependencies into userpatches/overlay 2. Ensure any library dependencies (libv4l-dev in this case) are met by adding 'PACKAGE_LIST="$PACKAGE_LIST libv4l-dev"' to userpatches/lib.config 3. Step 1 ensures that the target image will have content in /tmp/overlay. In userpatches/customize-image.sh one needs to move said content from the read-only directory to somewhere suitable (/test in my case) 4. Finally have customize-image.sh run the relevant build system and optionall…

Hello guys, There is an issue in build framework that makes impossible building my custom kernel for sun6i without changing your code. In the file sunxi_common.inc the variable LINUXFAMILY is forced to "sunxi" (unless it is sun8i) and my custom file userpatches/sources/sun6i.conf is not included. Of course I can hack sunxi_common.inc but much better if you make sort of correction for this issue. Thanks

If I have understood correctly, usb-redirector is an example of adding a custom application to an Armbian build? Is there a slightly simpler 'hello world' example? Greetings. Can I make sure I've understood this correctly. I want to ensure kernel sources always come from a local development directory. In my /userpatches I've got a lib.config which has: KERNELDIR="/home/user/sources/linux-sun8i" with both KERNELSOURCE and KERNELBRANCH commented out. Is this the right thing to do? Hello guys I have a question regarding H3 overlays. I see that during build "overlay" folder is created in arch/arm/boot/dts and H3 overlays are copied there. Can you point, please, where build framework takes those file from and how to customize this ? The goal here is to add an extra overlay. How can I obtain the kernel sources for a specific image and build the modules the same as those installed? I am running into structure version differences when I build the mainline, then apply to my test system, and I don't want to run the test system on mainline, as I need the stability of the legacy kernel. I know there are certain options to build and ignore structure version differences as long as the structure is similar, but it would seem most pertinent to obtain the correct source for the kernel I am running, copy the .config to the build machine and then build the image. This then allows me to easily switch between different kernel modul…

Hello guys, I built OS with legacy kernel for Orange Pi One using github framework https://github.com/armbian/build . Everything went fine and I got a resulting img file. I copied it to 16GB SD card (7Samsung EVO class 10) and powered up my device but it couldn't start. Below is the log I got from UART console. You can see from it that my device was retrying boot sequence over and over unsuccessfully. Can you help with the problem, please ? P.S. I also built Armbian with mainline kernel and it loaded fine, i.e. problem exists only with legacy kernel -------------------------------------------------------------------…

I tried to compile any distro for the first time, so I'm a total n00b here (used Oracle VirtualBox on a Win x64 machine, Ubuntu 10.04.02 x64)... They seem to be compiled fine. Moved the result images, written to new SD Cards with Etcher... Legacy Ubuntu server did boot. Legacy Ubuntu Desktop did not boot (even red/green lights did not light up). Can you give me some starting points or links about how to deal with this issue? Thank you in advance... BTW: I'm giving a shot to this to get rid of unnecessary SW installed in the desktop version, such as LibreOffice etc... I also don't know if this is possible...

Hello guys, I tried to build v3.* starting from here https://github.com/armbian/build, my build environment is Hiper-V & Ubuntu 16.04 x64. I have chosen OrangePi One board to build u-boot & kernel of v3.* but got issue with compiling kernel. Looking into log & scripts I found the compiler version assigned for kernel is > 6.x but looks like the code base (or whatever) is not ready for this high version. Logs attached. Can you help, please ? Thank you logs-26_05_2017-14_26_00.tgz

I am currently learning on the H5 on a OrangePiPC2. I would like to be able to add debug messages to arm-trusted-firmware (bl31) and u-boot code, then re-build them and update my SD card. I did successfully build an image, but having spent some time going through the build scripts and the documentation, and performed a number of recursive grep commands looking where bl31.bin was being referenced from, I have not been able to answer the following questions yet: 1) where is located the script code responsible for packaging bl31.bin and u-boot into an image acceptable by the H5 boot ROM ? 2) where is located the script code responsible for writin…

Hi there, while the customize-image.sh got some attention lately because of OMV integration, I've started a try to enhance the customization process. At the moment any changes to the script are valid for the whole buildenv. That might be good when building just one image but all over I think thats not a good situation, especially for automated building or with more then one customization. I startet to define a $CUSTOM Buildvar and redefined the script locations, starting with the following changes: - delete customize-image.sh an overlay dir - placed it under config/customizations with following layout *-chroot.sh, *-host.sh, …

Hi, I tried to use the Legacy 3.4.113 but when it loads the kernel the Cubieboard2 shows a weird scrambeled picture on the Monitor and just shuts down. So I decided to build the kernel from source. I'm pretty new to Armbian, and the compile script is a lot of different. I built the kernel using the compile.sh script for Cubieborad2. I installed the Mainline 4.9.7 Armbian on Cubieboard2. My question is how to install the built kernel (3.x) on the existing system, as if I try to install the debs I get that I can't install over existing firmware and u-boot (even with force-install)? Thanks!

I'm trying to lock u-boot version and I create the file /userpatches/lib.config with this inside MAINLINE_UBOOT_BRANCH='tag:v2017.01', but script continue updating uboot to v2017.03. What's wrong? In configuration.sh I put echo $MAINLINE_UBOOT_BRANCH just after load lib.config and this show my tag:v2017.01.

Hey, I'd like to build an image closer to mainline Debian (normal MOTD, wicd instead of network manager) with a few extra packages (nginx, mariadb, ...) and openbox for the DE targeted at an OrangePi Plus 2E, any suggestions or guidance on how to edit the build scripts to create something like this? Currently doing this all with Ansible after copying it to eMMC, but I figure it'd be a big time savings to prebuild an image with the right DE and software on a more powerful box.

Hello all, maybe I missed that part in the docs or in another thread... In fact, I haven't found a solution. I'd like to include a custom kernel repository in the build process (maybe in kernel-only mode) and select that in the interface if available. Either include a remote directory (github...) or some local directory. That all for easily trying things out without using the single-patches directory but using the armbian building environment. I couldn't find the lines in the build scripts, where I easily can "hardcode" such a kernel tree. Ultimate way would be an additional option for a custom kernel tree, chooseable via the menu. Can someone point me into …

Hi, my name is Tom and i am an embedded developer. I am aiming to dig into the CSI0 camera interface for the bananapi. Admittedly, i am new to the linux way of coding and compilation. Thus far for armbian, i realized,... ....compilation by script "compile.sh"...which checks all needed tools, code, updates...downloads everything...runs a config screen to select target, platform, ...and yeah..it works. When i run the script two times ...it keeps compiling again. hmm+ My experience is, that i do have the sourcecode, a compiler script/makefile....and it will just update the changes i did on the source. (old scool:-) so if i have the source in a direc…

There was recently a discussion on an issue over on github dealing with an issue that popped up when building Armbian within a Docker container. Following on from there, it was decided that it would be a good idea to document the build process using Docker, and adding a howto, best practices, and FAQ to the main Armbian documentation. (I've put my hand up to coordinate this.) Using Docker is a good alternative to a VM, and particularly for anyone on macOS or Windows. So to kick off the thread, it'll be good just to discuss what should go into the docs. Also to see if anyone is interested in building with Docker and hasn't done so yet.

Hello, I know this will be a controversial subject, but I often like to see what's happening in a devel repository by browsing commits. I start by looking at the commit titles (first commit message line) to approximate the interest that particular entry is to me, then if deemed interesting, I'll read the full commit message to understand what it is about, then if still interested I'll go read the code. I think this is a fairly straightforward approach to digging in a codebase or development stream, avoiding to loose time on things outside of interest scope, and allowing to focus on specific subjects. So, in order for this workflow to be doable, the commit …

I've been using ./compile.sh to play around booting a NanoPi Neo via FEL and come across an issue when using the default branch. When I build using "BRANCH=dev" it boots but when using ./compile.sh KERNEL_ONLY=no BRANCH=default BOARD=nanopineo PROGRESS_DISPLAY=plain RELEASE=jessie BUILD_DESKTOP=no ROOTFS_TYPE=fel The resulting kernel doesn't boot and shows the following error via serial on the Neo. Hi, while testing with various sun8i legacy builds with connected display it came to my attention that kernel always panics at shutdown (in fact I was all the time doing a reboot so it took me some time to notice this). I tried to replace our rmmod example here with this code for module in $(cut -f1 -d' ' </proc/modules) ; do rmmod -f ${module} ; done But to no avail. Still on shutdown or reboot the kernel panics, waits 10 seconds and reboots then. Behaviour might be related to recent kernel additions (FriendlyARM Matrix stuff)? And the other question is which drawbacks the above code could have?
