Hi, while testing with various sun8i legacy builds with connected display it came to my attention that kernel always panics at shutdown (in fact I was all the time doing a reboot so it took me some time to notice this). I tried to replace our rmmod example here with this code for module in $(cut -f1 -d' ' </proc/modules) ; do rmmod -f ${module} ; done But to no avail. Still on shutdown or reboot the kernel panics, waits 10 seconds and reboots then. Behaviour might be related to recent kernel additions (FriendlyARM Matrix stuff)? And the other question is which drawbacks the above code could have?

Hello, guys, I am having some strange boot messages for my bananapi m2 running 4.13.14. They all are more or less device-tree related. Hello, I am not very experienced on the Armbian development and want to add a kernel driver to the legacy kernel using the compile.sh development tool, but did not grasp the best practice to add the kernel source reading some forum posts and docs. As a start lets add the sunxi-can driver for the Olimex CAN-A20 interface for legacy kernel for Olimex lime2 A20 board like described in the Wiki at Olimex: https://www.olimex.com/wiki/A20-CAN I did: a) http://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_Build-Preparationon an virtual box on my machine and can successfully build kernel packages and apply user-patches enable some patches like the copy /patch…

A thought occurred to me while watching my machine sync a bunch of repos while running the Armbian build script, and I couldn't help wondering: Could we put the board support patches into their own repo separate from the build scripts themselves? More specifically: board support for "Boards of Interest" to the Armbian maintainers would be in whatever "official" repos we dedicate, I recommend separating per board family or SoC board support for CSC goes into, predictably, a CSC repo board support for EOL boards can be spun off into their own repo TV boxes go into a TV box repo Advantages: Supporting every pet …

This might be more targeted towards security, but building Armbian should not be as a root/privileged user... https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_Build-Preparation/#how-to-start OpenWRT builds fine as a normal user account, does not need elevated access. Also - FWIW - the local build directory should be armbian, not build - too many other things use /build. @Igor-- thoughts here?

Hello, guys, I got a third-party source code for a GPU kernel module, compatible with mainline. I need to build & install it during the Armbian build procedure. I know what to do when "Full image" is selected in configuration , i.e. I can use customize-image-host.sh. Is there any good way to build it when "Kernel only" mode is selected ? Thanks

hi, i have latest Armbian environment pulled from github running on Ubuntu Bionic 18.04. There are 2 issues that are bugging me. Not sure It does produce in most cases images but i think they are incomplete. Tried even secondary copy (another clone) that i would run in docker containers just to see if that was the issue but outcome seems to be the same. 1. Every time i start ./compile it pulls Linaro toolchain and fails to verify its signature. Looking at the files https://dl.armbian.com/_toolchains/ it seems that linaro toolchain has GPG signature in ASC file where as others have checksum. Am not sure ... zh@acus:~/armbian$ ./comp…

Hello there Maintainers! o/ I have found something while builiding my image and would like to ask for your opinion on that :-) I have built a Docker build environment where things are going real smooth (After some tinkering ;-) In order to save everyone's bandwidth (and be able to do builds while offline), I was tinkering with IGNORE_UPDATES=yes FORCE_CHECKOUT=no compile option. I am building my own armbian image using the armbian build environment. A substantial part of the image creation time is occupied by over-and-over recompiling the kernel. Sure, it does go faster the 2nd time, but it still takes a lot of time. The goal for me is not to make a custom kernel. I am totally happy with the kernel. The goal for me is to modify the rest of the image. They installed software, config, etc. Is there a way to reuse an existing kernel for this, instead of rebuilding a new one each time? Cheers, Dolf.

Hey, I'd like to build an image closer to mainline Debian (normal MOTD, wicd instead of network manager) with a few extra packages (nginx, mariadb, ...) and openbox for the DE targeted at an OrangePi Plus 2E, any suggestions or guidance on how to edit the build scripts to create something like this? Currently doing this all with Ansible after copying it to eMMC, but I figure it'd be a big time savings to prebuild an image with the right DE and software on a more powerful box.

Hello all, I recently went through the exercise of getting the Armbian build system set up to create an image with some of my user customizations, similar to the example with OMV. I ran into a number of different problems and ultimately gave up. Running on Ubuntu 18.04 on WSL2. I did eventually get a build to complete, but the image may h…

I am running the latest Build "Kagu". I have learned about Clean Levels. I am new to all of this. So I was not cleaning anything. I wanted to build the kernel locally after config. I noticed another thread about not seeing the menuconfig during the build even though it was requested. After hand deleting the target linux image deb, then menuconfig was invoked properly. I mention this to indicate that I dont really have control over this "cleaning" yet but I am getting there. I really dont want to clean too much but I have started over with a good cleaning. Edit: Uh i guess it should be in the "Development" section instead ... but I can't find how to move the topic :s Hellow, thank you very much for all the work achieved by the Armbian project. I am using Armbian to build images (using https://github.com/armbian/build ) that I provide to users, with custom packagers installed via userpatches and it works pretty well ! However, the whole "kernel compiling" thing is quite mysterious to me and I don't really understand it. My questions are : - I am confused by the whole "default", "next" and "dev" terminology ? I am guessing this is some sort of stable / testing / unstable, b…

Happy new year and thanks for the good work ! I see there is a (buster) image available for my Odroid N2 with kernel 5.4. A few weeks ago I set up the build environment and started building my own images. First images were build using the 4.9 kernel from Hardkernel. Later the images were build with kernel 5.1 (and BRANCH=default). However, the image with kernel 5.4 was not build today but the kernel 5.1 is still used for the image, although I changed the BRANCH=default (as it was before) to BRANCH=dev. How can I create a new armbian image with kernel 5.4 ? I read some posts about a new u-boot. Is this new u-boot…

Today I did build the image for stretch (for M2 Ultra) - but it was a bit strange - because it ended up in a 1.1GB .image file, but the compressed size was only 1.5MB OK, before building the image I got only 6GB free on my virtual HDD - by the last images this did work.... Now I will reinstall my build-system with the double size (60GB against 30GB before) and then I will firstly try to create a xenial image (not stretch which give me the compressed 1.50MB image whcih doesnt boot )

I'm attempting to build an image for the ROC-RK3328-CC (Renegade) with cryptroot encryption (and SSH unlock) enabled, but I run into weird behavior. The board will start and I can SSH in and reach the BusyBox prompt. So far so good but from what I've gathered I should enter the command "unlock" there to display the cryptroot password prompt. However it only results in the message -sh: unlock: not found. I read somewhere else the command might be "cryptroot-unlock" but that instead gives nothing, not even the error message. Furthermore, regardless whether I enter any commands, around 10 seconds into the SSH session it will freeze and I eventually ge…

Hello, I know this will be a controversial subject, but I often like to see what's happening in a devel repository by browsing commits. I start by looking at the commit titles (first commit message line) to approximate the interest that particular entry is to me, then if deemed interesting, I'll read the full commit message to understand what it is about, then if still interested I'll go read the code. I think this is a fairly straightforward approach to digging in a codebase or development stream, avoiding to loose time on things outside of interest scope, and allowing to focus on specific subjects. So, in order for this workflow to be doable, the commit …

For the past 10 years, I have been moving evenly and rectilinearly in an inertial frame of reference called OpenSUSE. I had to first read about creating Debian packages and look here: https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/focal/tree/ Both Ubuntu and OpenSUSE distributions start with the kernel source package, which contains a set of scripts and rules for further build. This has a sacred meaning. To get started, I took two scripts from the v5.7-rcX core as a basis and put them in packages/armbian/builddeb packages/armbian/mkdebian checked the build process for bionic current core v5.4.y This initial state can ser…

Hello, I'm planning to use Armbian for a custom distribution (target is Orange Pi Zero, for now). Usually, for this kind of job I use Yocto. But this time, I intend to use the board as a ROS server, and quite frankly, integrating ROS into Yocto is quite painful. As it will be used only for a hobby robotics project, I don't really mind using another method. So, the thing is, I intend to create a customized Armbian distro with ROS preinstalled. But, I will also need to cross-compile and install some of my own projects. I was wondering, what is the most standard way to cross-compile (mostly C++, here, but whatever) a project for int…

Should I use lib.config as the configuration source? Maybe we prefer a separate file? 2. Can I unify RELEASE_LIST=("xenial" "jessie" "stretch" "bionic") from build-all and DISTROS=("jessie" "xenial" "stretch" "bionic") from repository.sh into one common parameter? 3. Do we accept the name for the parameter: GPG_PUBLIC_KEY=config/armbian.key?

Is there a way, without having to fork the armbian/build repos, to modify the first run service? I would like to add some stuff. It would be awesome if there is a way to provide an extra script that is run after the end of the armbian-first-run service. Maybe an additional parameter in armbian_first_run.txt that can provide the path to a script that gets run? Or is there a way I am overlooking that can achieve this already?

Hello all, maybe I missed that part in the docs or in another thread... In fact, I haven't found a solution. I'd like to include a custom kernel repository in the build process (maybe in kernel-only mode) and select that in the interface if available. Either include a remote directory (github...) or some local directory. That all for easily trying things out without using the single-patches directory but using the armbian building environment. I couldn't find the lines in the build scripts, where I easily can "hardcode" such a kernel tree. Ultimate way would be an additional option for a custom kernel tree, chooseable via the menu. Can someone point me into …

I made some changes in the build scripts and wanted to ask if some of you may find them useful... ability to use custom skel folder in /userpatches directory support for xdm display manager (with graphical keyboard) selectable display manager in expert mode (lightdm, xdm or nodm) Especially the custom skel folder gives much more flexability for modders to generate images for wip or scs boards. I am currently testing different configurations, all seems good so far. What do you think about these changes? Would a pull request make sense?

Hello guys I recently moved my build into VirtualBox in order to protect my host's rootfs from potential corruption. Everything went ok, build is working fine. For my project I would like to share toolchains that Armbian has already downloaded on first start. Is it possible to customize the path where toolchains are stored so that I can point to a shared folder? Thank you

Hi, I'm looking for the simplest way to provide a custom uboot configuration to the Armbian build system. I have read (I think I did not miss something obvious) the documentation pages how to customize Armbian build, but the doc is mostly focused on specifying alternate source version or applying custom patches, while I only need a way to specify an already existing uboot config (generated with make menuconfig from the existing, installed Armbian sources). What would be the best way to tell Armbian to use an alternate uboot configuration? Thanks, Emmanuel.

Hi, I am adding support of my board to armbian framework and I have several questions: 1. I added my u-boot & kernel but when I build package for kernel, it creates linux-image-4.14.98-sabre_5.94_armhf.deb instead of linux-image-sabre_5.94_armhf.deb so I have to remove version from from file name in compilation.sh or image creation process would fail. Is it possible to define name of .deb package? I guess I just missed something in my kernel config file. 2. u-boot & linux-image packages are installed successful but I have to add default links to kernel & device tree files by hands or update u-boot scripts by hand. Is it p…

I try to build a customized image as described in https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_User-Configurations/#user-provided-image-customization-script and by using the template with the OpenMediaVault example https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/master/config/templates/customize-image.sh.template The goal is to build an image who auto-execute an initial setup script after being flashed and frist boot. The device has connected RGB-Leds and an OLED I2c Display on the GPIO pins. It should give color signals durring this initial setup, and then show system parameters (especially the DHCP-Address) on the oled screen *without* having a keyboard and HDMI-Display c…

In my customize-image.sh I need to dowload source via git and make it like user and not like root. Example of customize-image.sh: git clone https://github.com/xxx/xxx /home/pi/xxx su -c "sudo -S /home/pi/xxx/xxx.sh" - pi This work when I build image for OrangePi4 (and all other rk3399 board) It dosen't work when build image for sun8i board like OrangePi Lite. Both git and su command return error and compilation fail. This happen with legacy and mainline kernel, with ubuntu or debian.

Hello everyone, I have been using a pre-built Armbian image on a Nanopi M1 Plus and I have been very happy with it. However I have several modifications specific to my usage of the board (setup some files in /etc/, create default users, install or remove some packages, etc.) that I would like to add to the image in a repeatable way. By repeatable I mean that I could add the set of scripts/patches/packages etc. to source control so that other people could them rebuild the same exact image. All of the advice I have found searching the forum points to this process https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_User-Configurations/ But it does requir…

Dear All, I´m trying to boot my nanoPi NEO from an external SPI Flash. Hi all. Not sure if it is me not understanding (may well be! built my last kernels in 1997 I think...) or a flaw in this patch: https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/master/patch/kernel/sunxi-dev/general-sunxi-overlays.patch which is supposed to fix this bug if I understand correctly: https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/1663 Looking at the patch file in my built tree: build/patch/kernel/sunxi-dev/general-sunxi-overlays.patch To my understanding it contains the (re)addition of dts files for sun7i-a20-spi{0..2}, i.e. as of line 3456 it addes the spi0.dts source. However, building the dev kernel (latest, git updated two days…

Hello, I've got a problem with DNS resolving and customize-image.sh. One setup works (home), one setup does not (office). Both setups are OS X (different major versions), Virtual Box (different major versions), Network Bridging and Ubuntu 14.04. Building images (Banana Pi M1/M2/R1 jessie next) without customize-image.sh works perfectly, espacially the apt-get stuff, which needs DNS resolving. The working home setup uses dynamic (DHCP) private RFC1918 IPs (and/or public IPv6 IPs). The nonworking office setup uses public static IPv4 IPs for OS X and Ubuntu. The build process works flawlessly until customize-image.sh is executed. Some excerpts of cust…

Ideally I'd like to get a structure in place that rebuilds armbian with each commit to igorpecovnik/lib. I'd love people's ideas on the best way to go about this. I am pretty good with jenkins and all his pals, so if you have a favorite, please do let me know. Dockerfile Any feedback? It should work even on systems that don't have the needed native ubuntu 14.04 Vagrantfile Just used it to make a build myself, seems to be working fine, though there's some troubleshooting to be done with the build. Unsure what the source of the issue is, and had build mainline for opi, so instead I will now build opi-oldkernel.

I followed the documentation and cloned the repo in the Host first, changed to config/templates and started the Vagrant virtual machine. If I am not mistaken, inside the Guest, the repo is cloned again for the actual development. This implies that cloning on the Host system has only the purpose to provide config/templates/Vagrantfile and config-vagrant.conf, is that right? All other cloned files on the HOST have no relevance (except for the directories userpatches and output, which are mounted)? I find that quite confusing and if I am right with my assumption, I would like to add a note to the documentation for future users. Or: Would it be possib…

Hi all I am working on having a working cpufreq support for Allwinner H5 SoC According to the mainline plan, it won't happen anytime soon (it is not even scheduled for 4.13) However some (working) patches already exist, there is a quite updated fork at: https://github.com/megous/linux Reading the provided information, there is also an absolutely required patch for u-boot that fix a PLL1 configuration Apparently this patch is already included in Armbian, it is the patch: But for some reason I really don't understand, this is not applied to the u-boot source, the file doesn't contain the patch. Other patches in u-boot-sun50i-dev are applied correct…

I've been studying and working on Dynamic Device-Tree Overlays since awhile, but after hard work, I've finally got a working prototype using the work from Pantelis Antoniou. During last few days, I was doing debugging to find out why it wasn't working, even if I got the ConfigFS working, it was refusing to grab my simple overlay test. I've finally figured out this afternoon : the Root/Base DTB need also to be compiled with the "symbols" list generated with the Antoniou's version of "dtc". So, I will probably prepare a patch soon and submit it thru a PR.

Hello, It seems like the 'FORCE_MODULE_UNLOAD' parameter was (set to?) 'N' during the generation of the Armbian kernels. I know it's potentially dangerous to use it, but since the community is doing a lot of experimenting it would be convenient sometimes if this is enabled. Does this mean I have to compile a kernel with this option enabled myself, or is it possible to turn it on in future builds?

I was actually able to install lightdm using lib.config the customize-image.sh script (see here), but then the wizard complains that I have to choose between nodm and lightdm. Hello First issue: With the 5.4.18-sunxi64 kernel when you select in Armbian-config to install kernel headers it installs the wrong version, it install kernel headers for 5.3 something instead of the 5.4.18. Second issue: When "make scripts" and make modules_prepare instead of link to the 5.4.18-sunxi64 it creates a link for modules in 5.4.18 which makes the modules useless, since it doesnt go to the correct /lib/modules library. instead that the modules will be installed in lib/modules/5.…

Why do I want the source code? Well I am working with an Allwinner H5 board (Orange Pi PC 2), getting a RTOS to run on it, and want to study some of the device drives. How can I obtain the kernel sources for a specific image and build the modules the same as those installed? I am running into structure version differences when I build the mainline, then apply to my test system, and I don't want to run the test system on mainline, as I need the stability of the legacy kernel. I know there are certain options to build and ignore structure version differences as long as the structure is similar, but it would seem most pertinent to obtain the correct source for the kernel I am running, copy the .config to the build machine and then build the image. This then allows me to easily switch between different kernel modul…

I saw @zador.blood.stained was doing some housekeeping, so I wanted to open the discussion again about what to do about it in the future. We've obviously demonstrated what you "don't want to do". My last comments on this were as follows: We should have temporary per-kernel branches when undertaking a bigger change. This allows wider testing for those who like to build experimental things Makes the creator of the branch responsible for keeping it up to date gets flattened out and merged into "master" or a "next" waiting for a revision bump PR's should be used on anything anyone is not 100% certain of to g…
