My current setup is the tinkerboard powered by the raspberry pi universal adapter connected to ethernet and a external HDD(Maxtor M3) powered by the Tinkerboard's usb. I have used it very lightly in this configuration (ssh-ing into it and copying some files to the hdd) but from what I have gathered from the information available here this powering setup is inedequate and will lead to problems. So I want to follow the recommended method and power it through the GPIO pins. I am considering using this or this powersupply. (I realize 10A on the second one is overkill for the tinkerboard, but the price difference from the 3A rated one is minimal and I could find some othe…

IT'S FINALLY HERE... THE OFFICIAL ROCKCHIP-LEGACY MULTIMEDIA INTEGRATION After two years of using a separate script to enable the multimedia features in RK3288/3328 Legacy Kernel, the whole framework has been incorporated to the official Armbian packaging system. The choice distro for this integration is Debian Buster (see FAQ at the end of this post about the reasons). I. Installation Download a Armbian Buster Legacy Desktop image for your board, and install it with the standard Armbian method. Install the complete multimedia solution with sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade sudo apt install media-buster-legacy…

Alright, the biggest issue with the ASUS Tinkerboard being "resolved", I'm starting to take care of the VPU driver, in order to use it with mainline kernels. The hardware video encoding/decoding facilities are the real meat of the RK3288, and recent Rockchip boards. The VPU driver aims to use these facilities in order to provide the smooth video playback experience that every Netflix/Hulu addict expects when buying such boards. Which mean, once this part dealt with, you might be able to enjoy your Multimedia oriented distributions/softwares on your Rockchip boards (MiQi, Tinkerboard and maybe Pine64 too !) So the driver is already …

Hi. I need hardware OpenGL ES, at least 2.0. I’ve tried this https://github.com/rockchip-linux/libmali It works OK on latest Asus OS 2.0.1, but for Armbian 5.33 kernel 4.4.88 it doesn’t: ERROR: The DDK is not compatible with any of the Mali GPUs on the system. The DDK was built for 0x750 r0p0 status range [1..1], but none of the GPUs matched: Segmentation fault I don’t have much experience with Linux, but IMO it might mean the kernel + userland parts of the GPU driver are incompatible. Is there a working GPU driver for Mali-T76x on Armbian? Thanks in advance! Regards, Kosta.

I have 85 tinkers running with armbian 5.41 xenial next 4.14.23. Normally I run a script that apt upgrades them all but I run a small batch of them first as a test. Today I ran apt update/upgrade on three of them and they are all bricked. No output to the screen. Can't ping them. Any ideas?

Update May-21-2018: script may have negative impact on HDMI audio, needs further investigation. Patches pushed to enable I2S HDMI device, but audio does not come out. Update Feb-20-2018: script update committed for out of the box audio support (both outputs and inputs) for ASUS Tinker Board. Available sinks: BT-VOIP SPDIF Headset (the jack) Available sources: BT-VOIP Headset-input (the jack) Tinkerboard sound is possible with Armbian, however I have not worked to get it set up "out of the box" because of a major bug in the sound itself, namely that it outputs pure high pitched garbage from certain ap…

*Updated 7-23* ~~All kernels should be fixed at this point, Legacy, Next, and Dev.~~ The ASUS Tinker Board has a big problem with rebooting properly, centered around the SD card power supplies. Upon issuing a shutdown request, the kernel is turning everything off , including the vmmc regulator. To make matters worse, vqmmc is set to 1.8 Volts if you use a UHS SD card, and the kernel is not switching it back to 3.3 volts before rebooting, which is required if the Rockchip boot ROM is to communicate with the device. The result is a hung board in MaskROM mode. For the Default kernel (4.4), a patch was carried over from the vendor softwa…

Hello everyone, I've begun working to target the Armbian Legacy Tinker Board build to the Rockchip kernel. There are a list of reasons why it needs done, including some relatively large differences between the current kernel's code base and the Rockchip kernel (making it hard to patch with bugfixes/etc) and inactivity on the part of the vendor of that kernel. There are also reasons I am preferring to use the Rockchip kernel rather than the ASUS kernel. First and formost is the need to also support the MiQi. The miniarm branch of Rockchip and the ASUS kernel have board-specific fixes written in such a way as to not be friendly to other boards. I've dec…

Update May-15-2018: pushed today, Bluetooth patches to support bt in default and next kernels from boot, no user intervention ( "It just works" ). Thank you again to @Myy and @Jyu Ho for their work. Spoiler Trying to get the Bluetooth working, I've had a few different issues, I've labelled them per kernel: Default: Running "hci_attach" locks up the board after config and loading firmware. UPDATE June-25-2017: Disabling DMA on uart0 resolved the issue as theorized below. UPDATE Feb-22-2018: Services added loading Bluetooth automatically on boot, takes reboot after fi…

Hello all. I'm doing some tests with the Tinker Board to see what's the best operating system for it for a new video. I'm using the Armbian Ubuntu Desktop legacy kernel. For this I do Blender and Kdenlive renders to see if there's a speed difference. But with both I've got the problem that it crashes the Tinker Board. Sometimes it's a hard crash and the whole system freezes, and sometimes Blender or Kdenlive just close themselfs but Armbian keeps working. I do not have this problem in Lubuntu. In TinekrOS Kdenlive totally doesn't work. It looks the same as an unstable overclock on a system. I've tried different psu's. I'm using the Tinker h…

Topic to discuss RK3288 overlays, primarily concerning ASUS Tinker Board, the MiQi is technically EOL and has very little GPIO anyway, and TV boxes are more or less sealed. Kernel 4.19 will be the pilot for this, the discussion now that it seems to be working thanks to @martinayotte and @zador.blood.stained's feedback and examples is what to overlay. For testing/debugging I started with some ASUS overlays for RTC and 1wire. Easy ones: spidev out of the default tree but as default overlays. instead of making 1 overlay and messing with parameters, just make 2 overlays DAC's: I don't have a lot of hardware to play with, but @…

Good evening, last week they changed the electric meter in my building, but in order to do so they cut the power, and my Tinkerboard (the first model, the one issued back in 2017, Asus first's SBC), that I use as my "Save for later, and never look at it again" network folder, suffered. It continued to reboot from some kernel panic, which I forgot to take note; but since it hadn't been upgraded to jammy, I took the opportunity to do it. Pluging in the uSD card (with the newly released jammy version, just downloaded here), power, and all (including the ethernet cord!!), first boot I have to create my user (which, for some reasons refuses to let me put my usual fr3d tag…

This will be a catch-all for HDMI-related things. Sep. 29, 2017 UPDATE First up is hotplugging in Mainline. Script/rule added to build system. Thank you @botfap for the script I am getting the system events triggered saying the HDMI is unplugged/replugged, (using udevadm -monitor) however nothing is happening in response to the events it would seem, the screen is still blank. I could hook a script to the event, but I'm not exactly sure what I would tell it to do... Any thoughts would be great, I'll be researching.

Anyone who typically updates on nightly kernels I would recommend freezing and not updating until we clear up some issues gifted us by some large amount of upstream changes that broke well, pretty much everything. I will update this thread as things get brought back to life. June 7th 2018: I've made a branch (rockchip-default) to work out the kinks. So far I have the board booting and Mali working again (with an initial error on load) , however there is no HDMI terminal, so initial boots would require a uart or SSH hdmi terminal is back thank you to Ntemis on github, I'd missed part of the conversation (I only have cell phone while at w…

Hi guys, sorry, on with my second issue with the Asus Tinker Board and installing a DS3231 Real Time Clock module. I've tried following any instructions on the internet for Tinker Board use and a couple for the Raspberry Pi, from recompiling the kernel through to trying to edit boot files. I just cannot get this thing working so I've now got myself a fresh install of Armbian Stretch 4.14 and ready to go again. Can anybody provide a step-by-step installation for the Tinker Board and this module (I've been told the DS1307 is the same kernel module but for the life of me I cannot find any modules/.ko's available in Armbian)? Hello there. At present I power my Tinker Board S with a bench power supply set to 5.25V. The power supply has 10A current limiter. I measure the voltage at the GPIO pins using a 6.5 digit multimeter (in cal). The micro usb cord is 1.2 meters (4 feet). When the board is running in tinker os at idle, it is drawing 500mA, and i read 5.00V on the GPIO. But when I load the CPU using sysbench the current spikes to 1.6A, and the voltage measured on the GPIO drops to 4.45V. I measured that the micro USB cable is 0.37Ohm resistance, so about 0.55V of that power drop is due to the micro usb cable. That means all of the voltage drop is not due to the power c…

I have Rockchip 3288 board. As per the link: http://opensource.rock-chips.com/wiki_Graphics I checked the log at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and found glamor initialization failed. There is also log which says EGL_MESA_drm_image required, i checked x-server code and found this message lead to glamor initialization failed. Apart from these when i run glxinfo, it shows It means direct rendering is enabled. But when i run glxgears it consumed almost 18% CPU( So i think glxgear is not able to use GPU and performing all tasks at CPU). I am regularly following Armbian kernel and u-boot updates for the Tinkerboard and integrate them into my buildroot-based environment so that recent kernel and u-boot versions can be used. I have already updated my environment to kernel 4.14.x and U-boot 2018.05 using the great armbian patchset from GitHub (Thanks for the hard work to get all the Tinkerboard S related issues sorted out recently). What I am currently trying to achieve is to get the Tinkerboard to use a different set of standard gpio settings…

Hi, I spent several days trying to figure this out, which is a bit confusing given all the information that is available and posts and wikis saying that "Waveshare" LCDs are supposed to work, but something is still not right, hope you guys can help. Hello, I'm observing a strange behavior. If I connect the Tinkerboard to HDMI, it won't start. Only the red led LED lights up. Yellow and green did not light up. The Tinkerboard ist connected to a NorthPada 5V 3A Micro USB Charger power supply. I measured the supply voltage with 5.3V and checked with an oscilloscope if there are voltage dips. But the voltage was stable. I did a cross test. I unplugged the HDMI cable and started the Tinkerboard. The Tinkerboard starts and the yellow and green LEDs lights up. I measured the supply voltage with 5.3V and checked with an oscilloscope if there a voltage dips. The voltage was stable and dropped to roughly 5.1V for a short ti…

Hi all, I've got an application that runs from the terminal and with it failing to work on Tinker OS I've gone back to my default OS, Armbian, where it works faultless. However, everything worked great on my own 25" Philips monitor.... The Tinker Boards will be plugged into a number of 1440 x 900 60hz Samsung and LG HDMI monitors; the only screens available where I am. When using these screens I get a 2-3 pixel vertical purple line down the left of the screen and horrific 1 pixel high, long horizontal multi-coloured lines 'snowing' down the screen like old TV interference. The LG monitors consistently flicker on and off trying to change resolution.…

Hi I was struggling to find the right package for my Tinkerboard. I needed a reasonably powerful 24x7 appliance that could provide torrent downloading, wifi hotspot, a shared network drive and a LMS box. After trying out the Asus effort and DietPi - both with severe issues) I landed on Armbian and it seems to have everything going for it but the LMS install just does not work. I am a Linux newbie, I know my way around Windows and a GUI, and used the instructions here and a few other places to successfully set up the hotspot and the sharing and automounting of large USB drives. It took me the better part of 6 hours just to figure all of that out (j…

I have a TinkerBoard S. In Bionic Desktop (kernel 4.4), the wireless icon menu lists two devices: wlan0 (which is the expected interface) and p2p0: I don't know this one, but it is always chosen for auto-connecting to the local wireless lan, receiving a random IP and not the one I configured on the router. I can then manually connect to the network with the wlan0 interface the IP is correct. How do I disable / remove / anyway stop that p2p0 interface to "steal" the network connection?

Hi all, I'm running Armbian 4.19 (both stable kernel 5.77 and nightly) on an TinkerBoard S. I'm trying to connect a 3.2inch resistive Touch Display to SPI2. The display works with ili9341 module on SPI2 CS0. I have the touch screen of it on the SPI2@1 (CS1) but no way of getting a module or overlay dts for the ADS7846 TouchScreen. I've seen, there is a generice resisitive-adc-touch module, but I can't get it running. Using the ADS7846 on armbian with AllWinner and several other boards for many years. Works great so far. Any hints, how to get it running in such a way, that it will be there with downstream updates (meaning without h…

Just started using the thinker board, and got fed up with the OEM builds which brought me here. So I would like to thank everyone for all the hard work, Im sure it can't be easy fixing things blind! Cheers mates. As the Tinkerboard runs hot under load, i run a program that adjusts pwm to adjust fan speed. so I noticed right away when upgrading to 4.13.0 that both soc and gpu thermal zones had broken. I've tried 4.13.1 and 4.13.2 as well they are broken as well. 4.13.x all kick error messages into dmesg as well. root@Asus:/sys/class/thermal# uname -r 4.12.0-rockchip root@Asus:/sys/class/thermal# cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone[1-2]/temp 32…

It would be nice to be able to use hardware crypto for VPNs. The rockchip's hardware crypto acceleration has apparently been supported since Kernel 4.5. I noticed that the CONFIG_CRYPTO_DEV_ROCKCHIP option hadn't been compiled into the standard Armbian builds, so I built a custom kernel. Having the rk_crypto module loaded gives me additional ciphers in /proc/crypto as expected. Without the module loaded (either blacklisted with my build, or with the normal Armbian kernel), my tunnel (IKEv2/IPSEC w Strongswan) works fine. But with the module installed, no traffic passes. Sometimes I see kernel errors in syslog. A couple of tim…

I put a TinkerBoard in a Pi-Top CEED and using TinkerOS 2.0.8 it boots and the LCD works fine. Using Armbian it looks like it boots but nothing is displayed on the LCD. The Pi-Top CEED uses a HDMI to 30-pin converter board and the current LCD is a 1920x1080 14in that I used to upgrade the original. Any ideas why the Raspberry running Raspbian and The Tinkerboard running TinkerOS would work with the display but Armbian wouldn’t?

Just got my new tinkerboard powered up with armbian. For some reason I could not get anything after build 1.3 off the Asus site to boot! Anway, first impressions good, however in the graphics settings it seems to max out at 1920 x 1080 whilst on paper the tinkerboard is supposed to support 4k. I'll admit I am new to linux so perhaps i'm missing something ovbious, but if someone could explain how I can up the resolution to 3,840 x 2,160 that would be great. For the avoidance of doubt I have it connected to an Acer 27" 4k monitor.

Hey, I’m running armbian on a tinkerboard and I need to connect to a CAN-bus. Apparently the usual Linux CAN-kernel-modules aren’t shipped with armbian, so I guess I’ll have to add them manually somehow. I`ve been trying to do that for two days now without any luck. I’ve been trying to follow the steps described in other forums, but it haven’t helped. I really just want to add the necessary modules to my existing kernel. Any ideas?

Hello! I would like to know if it is possible to use the microUSB-Connector for connecting a USB device (a 7-port USB hub in my case)? My Tinkerboard is powered through the GPIO pins, so i don't use the microUSB for power input. Is it even possible from the hardware architecture of the board? Do i need some extra kernel packages and/or USB OTG to make it work? Thanks in advance, aElmecker

I try to understand the usage of Tinkerboard for Industrial Application usage, we have below questions. 1. Operating temperature is between 0-60 C [as many Industrial PLCs recommend 0-55 C only] 2. Long Term Supply of the Boards 3. Bulk Quantities buying [Get 30 to 50 boards in 2-4 weeks notice] The board and quality seems top notice, RPI interface is good for our use cases, anyone sees a risk in above points or would like to suggest something? We are looking a good sized community, Ubuntu OS, much stable and better performing board compared to Raspberry PI, all seems good with Tinkerboard. Please share your idea…

Has anyone played with kvm or xen on the hw-virt capable rockchip devices? Im trying to setup a simple kvm scenario. Im using Armbian tinker stable and the excellent @Myy 4.13 kernel and have configured it for guest and host support. Im struggling to get the boards up in "Normal" (PL2 / Hyp) mode. I'm using Armbian on a Tinker Board S. I did the installation back when the 4.4 kernel was still the default one. I expected that I'd get the newer 4.19 kernel by using 'apt update && apt dist-upgrade' at some point as it would become the new stable. This does not seem to be the case however, as I see the new downloads use 4.19 by default, but the stable package still points to a 4.4 kernel. Is it recommended to just move up by installing the kernel package with the next suffix or are there still reasons to wait with upgrading?

However, after running the tests for 15-20min, suddenly all traffic will more or less stop working (80-90% packet loss). Hi. I installed Armbian_20.02.1_Tinkerboard_bionic_current_5.4.20_desktop on my TinkerBoard (not S) and get weird screen state (white, then growing black circle in the middle). I tried Armbian_20.02.1_Tinkerboard_bionic_legacy_4.4.213_desktop and it works very good, but I still want to test vulkan driver, so I updated only kernel to 4.19 (install linux-image-next-rockchip, linux-header-next-rockchip, linux-dtb-next-rockchip and delete 3 old packages). After reboot I got same screen. Is it known bug? Can it be related, that I'm using HDMI-to-VGA adapter? Can you help me to fix it or get usefull logs?

Hello I cannot enable the Bluetooth on Tinkerboard device. Tried latest image, fresh install. I've opened the question on StackOverflow: https://superuser.com/questions/1698728/cannot-enable-bluetooth-on-tinkerboard-armbian It contains technical details. The latest what I've found so far is it could be related to Kernel compilation flags: # Extract from the /boot/config-5.10.60-rockchip CONFIG_SERIAL_DEV_BUS=y CONFIG_BT_HCIUART_3WIRE=y CONFIG_BT_HCIUART_SERDEV=y # CONFIG_BT_HCIUART_RTL - is not set # CONFIG_SERIAL_DEV_CTRL_TTYPORT - is not set I tried to download and compile the kernel and stuck. Basically I do…

We are looking at replacing the raspi3b+ with the tinkerboardS (rockchip 3288) in an embedded system, running armbian (bionic-4.19). Initial tests show that OS stability, board performance and form factor make the tinkerboardS a good substitute for the raspi. However, one issue we have run into is a conflict with pin 32 of the GPIO which is used by the hostboard for managing output devices. We have tried to turn off serial2 by removing the UART2 overlay and adding 'console=display' in /boot/armbianEnv.txt and also disabling & masking serial-getty@ttyS2.service but that hasn't stopped pin 32 from being chatty when connected to the hostboard. Is…
