I'm looking for Orange Pi RV2 RISC-V support. This board is gaining popularity due to the Orange Pi manufacturer's good reputation with Arm. I have successfully built both Orange Pi and Raspberry Pi aarch64 builds on Debian from source so I'd like to know how to build Armbian for Orange Pi RV2 riscv64. What would I need to modify in the build process? Thanks!!

A great 9.30 min review here, pointing out the issues: Cooling, GPIO expansion, no MIPI, lack of SPI support in Armbian? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MzxLYGWQddA Apparently the much discussed Armbian cooling/Vreg techniques were not known to the author. Other stuff is interesting, with comparison to RPi.

I've build an dev image for my OrangePi 2 (kernel 4.10) to try mainline kernel and got into troubles with onboard wifi. It works fine in legacy with 8189es module, but there is no 8189es module in mainline image. So I tried 8189fs but it's not working. After doing some search I've managed to build 8189es module myself using https://github.com/jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux.gitrepository. Quick manual: git clone https://github.com/jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux.git cd rtl8189ES_linux/ make ARCH=arm KSRC=/usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r) CROSS_COMPILE= sudo mkdir /lib/modules/4.10.0-sun8i/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/realtek/rtl8189es/ sudo cp 8189es.ko /lib/modules/4.10.0-s…

Some of you probably saw that I added recently the OrangePi-Prime to the build process. Unfortunately, I'm still struggling to get the WiFi. It is even worst than the WiFi issue still present on OrangePiWin. For the OrangePi-Prime, even the DT doesn't process the WiFi entries, and the mmc1 is still "disabled" in /proc/device-tree at boot time. The strange thing is that if I load a small overlay to change the mmc1 status to "okay", the kernel start processing it. But, unfortunately, I'm seeing "sunxi-mmc 1c10000.mmc: no support for card's volts" error, although I didn't found obvious errors in vqmmc-supply setting of mmc1. I will have to dig f…

I've added new patches for OrangePi-ZeroPlus and commited them. Like for OPiPrime done yesterday, the OrangePi-ZeroPlus WiFi still not working. I don't know why yet, although is more encouraging than OPiPrime, since at least the driver comes up in "lsmod" in the OrangePi-ZeroPlus, while for the Prime it didn't. Also another issue : OrangePi-ZeroPlus has an eMMC, I was able to do "nand-install-sata", but I'm unable to boot from it, although the MMC2 DT is part of U-Boot, for some reasons, it doesn't scan it.

Hi there, I have this device left over from a previous project, and now I want to repurpose it for a forked version of PiKVM that is meant for alternate SBC such as the OrangePi. I spent the last 2 days adjusting various build settings and compiling. After installing, the kvmd service would complain about the UDC driver missing. Also executing ls /sys/class/udc/ would return nothing, seemingly indicating that OTG is not possible. Just last night I came across the file "sun50i-h6-orangepi-3-lts.dts" in which there is a comment containing the following: /* * This board doesn't have a controllable VBUS even though it * does hav…

Hi Guys, I have recently been contracted to a new project where I have moved out of my comfort zone (embedded 8-bit/32-bit uC) and have started my work on a H3 based device (currently NanoPi Neo) with Armbian. Over the course of my work I have managed to get up to speed with the basics; configuration, scripting, hardware and interfaces and device trees to a point where I can now work on the device as a proof of concept. The work that has been contributed so-far to the armbian project is impressive as is the active and knowledgeable forum - to which I hope I can contribute. One element which I cannot find an easy solution to is one of remo…

Hi, I am using mainline 4.10.0-sun8i and to enable I2C I added: overlays=sun8i-h3-i2c0 to armbianEnv.txt and rebooted, then I checked: cat /proc/device-tree/soc/i2c\@01c2b400/status and still found that it was disabled, I feel that I may be missing a step, like having to compile armbianEnv.txt into the config script, is that so? Just to make sure it wasn't working, i changes the pins to I2C using: sunxi-pio -m PA11'<2>' sunxi-pio -m PA12'<2>' BTW. sunxi-pio has very few code comments, did not specify the field order and finding which bits to flip in the H3 data sheet was annoying, did you want me to fix and submit a pull …

Hello, the new kernel versioning scheme consists of the latest git tag and several hashes: https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/main/lib/functions/artifacts/artifact-kernel.sh With boards like odroid-xu4 for which the upstream git is only updated occasionally, this leads to two problems: 1. the generated version is lower than what is currenty getting shipped: `5.4.228-S3043-De511-P0a53-C0750H6842-Bb436` vs `23.02.2` 2. it cannot be guaranteed that the versions go up reliably: 5.4.232 is `5.4.228-S3043-De511-Pc02c-C0750H6842-Bec1c` and 5.4.233 is `5.4.228-S3043-De511-P0a53-C0750H6842-Bb436` While I can understand using the kernel versi…

I got an issue from a user on a bash script I am sharing on github. The script is to make shrunk img backups on a running system on a lot of different sbc:s. After some testing on the users side (I did not have access to hardware to test) it turned out the script fails because of the partition table, it is GPT while in the past they have always been MBR (msdos). I downloaded the latest opi5 gnome desktop image and looped it and parted shows it is in GPT. We figured out a way to solve it but my question is: is this because rpi5 uses gpt partition table (I do not own a rpi5 either)? Will this be the future of most armbian builds? …

Hi, I hit a problem on pinebook where docker would hang with defunct processes consuming high cpu. A bit of googling turned up a known problem with aufs as the cause, so I grabbed the patches, combined them and created a pull request https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/772 I gave the resulting kernel a fairly good work-out this evening and it seems to be working fine now.

Hi every devs ! (some of you know that I was on other duties those past months, mainly constructing my new house and moving in it, but I'm now back to Armbian builds those recent days after more then 6 busy months) I've noticed yesterday that USB1-DRVVBUS/PD7 was not activated any more in my recent build, although the fix-many-orangepiwin-dts.patch should take care of that and this one is successfully applied. After digging the issue, I've found out that the sunxi64-hdmi-thermal-dma-pmw-enable.patch is reverting many of those, probably unintentionally, and since this patch is applied after the first one, things are revert silently. …

Ever since patchfolders were created for different branches and different board families it has become more and more a nightmare to maintain these folders and keep them clean. Instead of taking the approach to clear one or more of these folders by myself, last but not least due to lack of necessary skills, I was thinking maybe I can provide some tools that make such tasks a little easier for somebody else. Last but not least was (and still is) this a perfect opportunity to pratice with my quite new Python skills. https://github.com/EvilOlaf/refactorpatches What this script basically does is break down all patches in a certain folde…

As armbian incorporates some performance tweaks also with regards to IRQ balancing on Allwinner devices, I just wanted to note, that the irqbalance daemon now finally works on armhf in Debian Stretch. I had tried irqbalanced on arm several times over the last two years, and neither the versions shipped in Wheezy or Jessie actually worked (i.e. balanced IRQs over multiple cores). I also tried to compile a more recent version last year but couldn't get it to work. So, now after upgrading one of my BananaPis to Debian Stretch, I gave irqbalanced another shot and am happy to see that interrupts are now nicely balanced, including e.g. ethernet and USB interrupts.

I was hoping that while moving to ASUS Tinker Board from a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ I would still be able to use my Google Voice Kit AIY (v1), but it looks like Armbian right now supports v2 only? I tried installing everything needed, but all I got were loads of error/not found messages. May I hope to be able to use the kit by some workarounds or do I have to stick with the Raspberry in the meantime? I am not really willing to spend extra money for some USB solution and I would like to fix it so that I can learn something new.

(Not an expert here). Patches apply smoothly on RPi3. Would be really nice to have this functional on Friendly ARM NanoPi Neo Air.

I have Orange Pi R1 and using Armbian everything is working, however I have proprietary software and want to secure it ( as much as possible ) Read a lot of articles and read about Armbian supporting CRYPTROOT_ENABLE , so decided to try to build my own image. I have succeeded in building 5 images but unfortunatelly none of them boots correctly. I decided to first build image without CRYPTROOT_ENABLE but still cannot succeed. It gives me KERNEL PANIC after truing to load/uncompress Linux. I Basicly want default Armbian image for Orange Pi R1 + CRYPTROOT_ENABLE. My second question will follow …

It isn't documented anywhere, where to put the public key file for dropbear before compiling the image with the enabled cryptroot parameter. Does anybody know where the key should be placed and in which format?

A bit of software that might be interesting to those that wish to use the IO's of Pi type boards https://github.com/Nikolay-Kha/PyCNC Typically there is no way to control stepper motors from Linux runtime environment due to the lack of real time GPIO control. Even kernel based modules can not guarantee precise control of pulses for steppers. However, we can use a separate hardware module, DMA (Direct Memory Access) which provides high precision for GPIO outputs. This module can copy bytes which represent GPIO states from RAM buffer directly to GPIO with some clock based on main chip internal oscillator without using CPU's cores. Using such approach…

Hi all, I'am looking at creating a single unified H3 DietPi image (currently using ARMbian build tools), rather than one for each board. Would allow us to support all H3 devices, reduce work load and simplify DietPi source code. Basically I need to know if its possible, and which unique files/configurations would need changing to achieve it. The end goal: The user would download the H3 image, modify it for their board (eg: copy and paste job on /boot), prior to powering on. Some questions: Is script.bin the only unique configuration across all H3 boards? Aside from any additional linux stuff, like hardware items (eg: + onboard BT/WiFi) Does /usr/lib/linux-u…

Hi there, let's assume I have two custom extra packages which have a dependency in extras-buildpkgs. 10-package1.conf 20-package2.conf 20-package2 has a package_builddeps to 10-package1. It is marked in the .conf file as in package2/debian/control@Build-Depends. Package 10-package1 is build properly and stored under output/deps/extra/jammy_utils. While building package 20-package2 it does install resolve 10-package1 before and in the logs I see the `Bad package name` (general.sh:1290) message. Also the adjustment of package20's rules to use apt-get during build prep does not find the package. Is there anything I h…

I’m currently using the Armbian build system to generate images for the Orange Pi 5 Plus. To use the PREEMPT_RT kernel, I set the BRANCH to current, and with the PREEMPT_RT configuration on the 6.12 kernel I was able to successfully build the image and boot it. However, in this kernel version there are no dtbo files for peripherals like can0, i2c, etc., so I’m unable to use those interfaces. If I set the BRANCH to vendor, I can use the 6.1 kernel, but in order to use a PREEMPT_RT kernel I need to apply the RT patch. The RT patch currently provided is not compatible with the current BRANCH, so kernel build and image creation fail. My question is: wh…

Hi guys I'm working to port the bpi-m2m to armbian. Right now i'm having a strange behaviour. I'm new to armbian development. I only use it for a npi-neo back in time. Anyway, my problem is quite simple. I have a working uboot and a working kernel (I think). the decive tree is in mainline. Looking the schematic, the DTS looks it is ok. I crated the armbian configuration, buit an image and it started "working" (you will se why is inside teh quote mark later) . Somehow i got a shell via UART. I configured the wireless AP and I got a working image. (Only BT was not working, no idea why). Due to the BT problem I decided to reboot the SBC and the problem I got b…

Linux 6.12 mainlined PREEMPT_RT, real-time preemption. As far as I understand, one no longer needs to muck about with patches, the kernel can simply be compiled for real-time use with normal compiler flags on any common architecture. This makes Linux suitable for tasks with precise latency requirements, of which there is a lot of in the embedded space. Has anyone tried this on Armbian 25.2 now that it uses the 6.12 kernel? Does it work? How would one compile Armbian with it?

Hello Armbian community, I am working on adding support for a new RK3568 board to Armbian. Besides the board support, there are some hardware-specific kernel driver patches, for example: - RS485 driver modifications - TP2815 related driver changes - GT9xx touchscreen driver changes - Other hardware-specific drivers These drivers are only required for this hardware platform. What is the recommended way to maintain these driver patches in Armbian? Should they be submitted together with the board support? Or should they be maintained separately and applied through: userpatches/kern…

Is there a "release" branch I could switch to to make it stop? Or do I need to blacklist armbian-config from apticron reports? Thanks!

Hi, I have been recently working on a couple of extensions: lvm and cloud-init I forked off "v23.11.2" tag when creating my branches, since they are extensions, and wont alter the framework much. Today I noticed that OdroidUX4 is not building, but it was building last week. A patch seems to be failing. I guess it is a kernel/driver patch. Then my question is: is it possible that, on the same tag (v23.11.2), builds break? I am starting to think that the tag is only for the build process/patch set, but excludes, for example a reference to kernel code. I suppose then the situation is that a kernel update…

In my opinion ntp should be replaced by chrony. Benefits of Chrony include: 1. Faster synchronization requiring only minutes instead of hours to minimize the time and frequency error, which is useful on desktops or systems not running 24 hours a day. 2. Better response to rapid changes in the clock frequency, which is useful for virtual machines that have unstable clocks or for power-saving technologies that don’t keep the clock frequency constant. 3. After the initial synchronization, it never steps the clock so as not to affect applications needing system time to be monotonic. 4. Better stability when dealing with temporary asymmetric delays, …

Was trying to follow the https://www.armbian.com/participate/ page instructions to get access to Jira, but the link just takes me to Jira and tells me that I don't have access. No option to request access on that page, just "[username] doesn't have access to Jira on armbian.atlassian.net." Does the participate page need updates? Or should I just try to work off of github issues only? Feel free to direct me to the right place if it matters, I would potentially be helping with some nanopi devices, have several r2s and r2s plus - the r2s plus needs some work i think.

Hello. For the past month, I have been working on fixing, updating, and rewriting the hardware crypto patch for RK3588. I've done so much work on it that I'm considering submitting it for review to be added to mainline kernel. I needed hardware cryptographic acceleration for a small project running on my Kubernetes ARM cluster. I noticed that Armbian is still using rk35xx-montjoie-crypto-v2-rk35xx.patch, so I decided to give it a try, but unfortunately the results were quite buggy. I took a closer look at rk35xx-montjoie-crypto-v2-rk35xx.patch and discovered a fairly large number of bugs and potential improvements. I then spent the past month rewriting and updating th…

Hi there, I have now finally managed to apply the RT Kernel patch on the Bananapi. (Original Patch here: https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/3.4/patch-3.4.108-rt136.patch.gz) The patch did not work out of the box and I had a bit of hassle to fix all of the rejected bits. To me the Banana Pi is best suited for audio production since it is very affoedable and it already comes with a usable audio out. To get the full benefit of the RT kernel patch it was necessary to thrn also reduce the buffer size of the inbuilt sunxi -codec audio driver. I can now play a synth using a buffer size of 512 samples glitch free. Here are some numbers: ansum@ba…

When building a kernel the device driver configuration asks which rtc should a system use for NTP and startup synchronisation . By default this is rtc0. The question is: In case there are more hardware RTCs in one embedded system ( in my case onboard RK808 and Dallas DS1307 over I2C), which one would be numbered as rtc0? Threre are several RTC device drivers available and checked by default, some marked as M and other as '*' , supposing 'module' or 'driver' respectively. Now if I have two hardware RTCs, I presume they should load as rtc0 and rtc1, but which part does numbering? I can't know this 'a priori' , I would like to use DS1307 for synchronisation…

This is currently a dkms module that requires beta repos to get matching kernel headers.

I changed the bananapro with the bananapi dtb file, but this doesn't help. root@bananapipro:~# dpkg -l | grep next ii linux-dtb-next-sunxi 5.07 armhf Linux DTB, version 4.5.1-sunxi ii linux-firmware-image-next-sunxi 5.07 armhf Linux kernel firmware, version 4.5.1-sunxi ii linux-headers-next-sunxi 5.07 armhf Linux kernel headers for 4.5.1-sunxi on armhf ii linux-image-next-sunxi 5.07 …

Hi, U-boot reads my SD card with a speed of less then 1 MB/s. This is the log from extraPutty for my kernel image: [30:208][35:648] 5025176 bytes read in 5389 ms (910.2 KiB/s) I find similar results from other people. When I read the same file in a shell with dd I get a speed of 20 MB/s. Clear the cache: echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches Read file from the /boot directory: dd if=zImage of=/dev/null 9814+1 records in 9814+1 records out 5025176 bytes (5.0 MB) copied, 0.246444 s, 20.4 MB/s This is the result I expect because the hardware is SD v2. (25 MB/s) Goal: Faster boot by increasing the SD card read speed of U-boot. Question: How to do this? Any re…

Hello, I would like to share my experience about development and debugging inside Armbian. On the beginning I tried to use Code::Blocks. But it crashed too many times, mostly during simple file editing. Then I found better IDE - CodeLite. When I wanted to debug a program, I found I have to install GDB. After installing and configuring it, the debugging looked to be possible, but every attempt finished with segmentation fault somewhere outside of my program, even before the first statement in main function was reached. After several attempts, I uninstalled and re-installed GDB and this time found recommended additional component - libc6-dbg. Installing this component fixed…

Where can I follow detailed changes in (legacy) Armbian builds? Things such as: motd structure change introduce/remove Network Manager ... I have lots of setup scripts manipulating (e.g. using sed) the default Armbian files and they break if stuff changes... Are these changes coming from Ubuntu or from Armbian? Thanks a lot.

Hallo, the Armbian Debian jessie dhclient does not handle a served hostname reliable. Deleting /etc/hostname (or replacing it with an empty file) and setting the hostname option at the DHCP Server doesn't always work. In some cases the Armbian client still has its default name 'bananapim2'. http://blog.schlomo.schapiro.org/2013/11/setting-hostname-from-dhcp-in-debian.html describes the problem, a cause and a solution. I can confirm the problem with the leases file. Following step 2 works for me. It would be really fine if the unset_old_hostname file could be added to Armbian by default. Kind regards, Steve

Simple library for 128x64. Works fine with SH1106 1.3" OLED and OrangePi Zero (4.9 kernel). You just need to activate I2C interface by replacing "disabled" with "okay" in device tree file (or in the fex). Connect display and test with "sudo i2cdetect -y 0" (or 1). If your display has 3d address instead 3c, change OLED_I2C_ADDR parameter it in the oled.h. Enter "make" to compile and run demo with "sudo ./oled_demo /dev/i2c-0". This library was written by Sonal Pinto for Arduino and ported to Linux by Vladimir Komendantskiy. I just wrote functions for text drawing and add three little fonts. This library only can draw text at X Y with specified font and draw cu…

Hello, I've finally gotten around to writing the GitHub Actions based Linux Kernel Shallow git trees exporter. It's very simple, a single shell script and GHA workflow. It prepares shallow bundle (and ready-to-go .tar too) everyday on a schedule and publishes to GitHub Releases. Please take a look https://github.com/rpardini/armbian-git-shallow - theres a README that shows how to use the bundles outside of Armbian. If this is a good idea, I'd move it to armbian/kernel-git-shallow in GitHub. And then I'd start using those in armbian-next first as a test ground. I mention I few people I know are interested in the subject @Igor and…

I have Armbian Jessie running on a Orange Pi Lite board and the login script is showing the local loopback ip (127.0.0.1). It appears to be doing this because /etc/update-motd.d/30-sysinfo calls ifconfig -a and pulls the first ip, which in this particular case, is the local loopback. For the orangepi-lite, i wrote the following command in customize_image.sh and it fixes the problem in this case. sudo sed -i "s/ifconfig -a/ifconfig wlan0/g" /etc/update-motd.d/30-sysinfo It basically changes the script to pull the ip address from wlan0 instead of whatever one it finds first This could also be called from the command line for the same effect instead of during compilation.…
