This is an improvement over the previous OS called Armbian-Reforged V1.0 - XFCE4 is now the main DE - File Size has been reduced to 2.9Gb This build of TwisterOS Armbian target RK3399 devices supported by Armbian. the only required step after flashing the sd card it's to rename the DTB label inside /boot/armbianEnv.txt to your device DTB (you can find the DTB files on /boot/dtb/rockchip/ folder). after first boot, you should change the default password for user and root with passwd and sudo passwd respectively. Also, remember to resize your sd card/emmc manually from gnome disks to fill your entire disk space. This is a beta and we…

Hi, I want to build cluster with ubuntu for my bioinformatics calculations and maybe for webserver. I didn't do anything like that earlier, so I want you all to be kind xD Here is what i have: > 5x orange pi one plus (every opi with heatsinks) > NAS expansion (for disk minissd or HDD) > tp-link switch with 8 ports (tp-link tl-sf1008d, im afraid it will be to slow for this, but i can change it later) > AC DC Power Adapter 5V / 10A Charger Transformer ( for Opi's) - with splitter > 2 port usb charger for NAS and switch (cause of i cant find power supply for all of opis with switch and NAS - im bad at electronics) > ethernet cab…

Hi Armbian folks, I’m new to the forum and joined today (07:42 PM CEST, July 20, 2025). I’ve recently started playing around with single-board computers, like an Orange Pi 5 I set up with Armbian a while back—it’s been a fun challenge! I’m based in Poland and enjoy tinkering with tech in my spare time. I’d love to hear what brings you all here—any cool hobbies or projects you’re working on? I’m thinking of trying something simple like a media server or smart home setup, but I’m open to ideas. What do you enjoy doing with your SBCs or other gear? Looking forward to chatting with you!

Hi everyone, I’m sharing an engineering paper about getting a PP-OCRv6-based RapidOCR pipeline running on the Orange Pi Zero 3W’s Allwinner A733 / Vivante VIP9000 NPU, integrated into Visual AI. Full paper: https://github.com/sog777/orange-pi-zero-3w-rapidocr-npu The tests used the Orange Pi Debian 12 Bookworm image and its vendor NPU stack, not Armbian. This is an engineering case study, not an Armbian support request or a claim that the same binaries work on an Armbian image. The paper covers the ONNX → ACUITY → NBG → VIPLite conversion path, static model shapes, targeted convolution and LayerNorm graph rewrites, quantization, simulator-versus-hardwa…

Hi all. I've discovered Vivaldi Browser for arm. A fork of Chromium. There is a armhf version and a arm64 version. Youtube playback with this is a lot better. I've tested it on the NanoPi M4. The same video in Chromium had 2/3 dropped frames. (10 frames/s) 1080p video With Vivaldi browser you get 1/3 dropped frames. (20 frames/s) A lot better experience. Here you can download it. https://vivaldi.com/nl/blog/snapshots/vivaldi-1-15-rc-2/ Here the source where I found it. From Meveric @ Odroid. Also explanation of how to install. No wget, and change filename to the file you've downloaded for gdebi. Or use gdebi package installer.(not tested) https://f…

Hi everyone, I'm looking at a project to provide a Media Server in a small bar to the customers along with an Intranet webserver and Wireless Internet gateway. I want the internal LAN consisting of my Desktop PC and the new SBC server to be running GbE and for the SBC to be serving data from a 2.5" 250Gb SATA drive directly rather than over a USB bridge. This has led me to a choice of a Cubie board or Banana Pi connected to a GbE switch or alternatively I could simply get the Banana router board and avoid the extra switch device. (I'm leaning towards the router board as it will be less devices and therefore consume less power, unless there is a major disadvantage …

@Igor @zador.blood.stained @tkaiser + any other mods, devs and users. I'll try and keep this brief and to the point but I probably won't succeed. Donations and campaigns We ever thought about doing a kickstarter or indiegogo campaign for donations? I'm not sure of the exact differences between them but I know you can do campaigns for non profit means and donations. ie: Employing more devs, buying boards with donations, etc... w/e it is you guys might need. I'd be willing to set up the campaign with basics like pictures, description outline and what not with some more input. Then hand the 'keys' to the profile over to Igor or whoever, for financia…

I just released my multi-system game emulator (GameBoy+NES+GameGear for now). Optimized for directly outputting to SPI LCD displays (e.g. ili9341). Runs on any CPU type, but has optimizations for ARM+X64. I wrote 100% of the code, so it might be behave differently than other game emulators. GB+GG are nearly perfect. NES is missing some popular mappers. The code is very optimized to begin with, but also uses a dirty-tile system to minimize the data sent to the SPI bus. This allows inexpensive SPI displays (e.g. ili9341) to run at or near 60 frames per second for many games even though the SPI bus can only do 30FPS of full screen updates. https://github.com/bitbank2/sg_fre…

Dear all, First post here I just wanted to thank you for the up-to-date image you made for the pcDuino4 Nano (a.k.a the NanoPI M1): https://armbian.hosthatch.com/archive/nanopim1/archive/ It's much better than the stock image provided my LinkSprite, based upon Debian 8 "Jessie": https://www.linksprite.com/pcduino4-nano/ I only had one issue so far with your image, certainly related to the default overclocking at 1368 MHz, which didn't play well with the CPU intensive, NEON optimized tasks I threw at it (BOINC) I lowered the frequency to 1296 MHz and it's been running stable for a couple …

Hi, I developed this app just while having a look at django + angular -> https://github.com/vijaygill/wg-ui-plus I thought of sharing it with open-source communiity which has given me a lot! It allows me to have finer control over what a given VPN client can access (using IP Tables rules - managed by the code itself) I hope somebody finds it useful. It is comes as docker image (published on every push to dev / master) so updates are quite frequent for now due to tweaks / fixes. I developed it on an Orange Pi 5+ running on Armbian . The LIVE instance is running on a Raspberry Pi. …

I'm using an eBay packaged Debian 6 MySQL server that is on an OPi PC v1.2 (at least that's what's printed on the board). I am building a database for my app. Just discovered "Browse Network" on the File Manager app and was pleasetly surprised to see "WORKGROUP" appear, which is my (otherwise) Wintel home network. That network has an NAS, but dble-clicking the WG resulted in the attached popup "Failed to open "WORKGROUP". TTL-Connection is done (like allways in TTL-Connections) with RX,TX and GND I connected my Orange Pi R1 via TTL and 115200 Baud and could "work" at a (max.) Terminal-Size of 80…

Hi, I just had a huge boost on my Internet speed (1Gbs down / 600Mbps up), it's a good thing but it showed that many of my SBC that are running 24/7 are not ready to handle such high bandwidth. In each case running a curl outputting to /dev/null -> I almost top out the Gigabit interface -> 99Mo/s. When I test download speed (while saving on disk) : * Old Banana pi running kernel 4.14.18-sunxi (armbian of course but not updated with stretch) with an Kingston SSD on the SATA port -> cannot go over 12~14Mo/s (Mo/s not Mb/s) * Orange Pi +2E running 4.19.62-sunxi (armbian with ubuntu Bionic) with a Sandisk SSD on usb2 wi…

Hi , there Im , jeremy It seems like manufacturers should want to sell as many chips as possible, and it seems like they could sell more chips if they released the documentation to allow anyone to implement their product. But many devices or peripherals (i.e., ARM Mali, Allwinner CedarX, etc.) are undocumented and need to be reverse engineered. I noticed this when when I was looking at the RK3399 data sheet and saw all of the features this chip has. It's a shame that of all those features, the only ones that will be used on most SBCs are the ARM cores and the simple I/O peripherals (SPI, I2C, GPIO). I don't have the skills yet to write an OS driver, but…

Where do you store the KeePass-DB? Where would you recommend me to store a Keepass-file? Usually I have my personal documents in my cloud account - but i am not sure if this is safe. Would it be safe to use the cloud for this file? Can i secure it even further, by adding another (extra) layer of security by encrypting the file. General question; How safe is this? What risks do I need to know about? what can i do with the KeePass password file, there are several arguments to decide where to store it. In my humble opinion, if the passwords are really, really important to someone, one should make the decision based on: - the risk of the file being …

So, I'm working on the new armbian-config and I need to test cpufreq on a real board as VMs don't support this. I was surprised a lot of my older boards are not supported. There are many people who tend to use old phone chargers on there systems and wonder why things become problematic after a good while of usage. My recommendations to people who have this issue are the following 1 - if you are a *SERIOUS* modder or electronics engineer you will know all about bench power supplies and there benefits. 2 - for others who aren't in this category. I would like to share with you my preferred method to deliver power to dev boards. I utilse these shown in the link below. I have found these type to be incredibly stable after 18 months of running one nonstop on a live system i can happily describe them as rock solid and superbly over…

As much as I love Armbian, I'm also interested in the Tinycore project - not as competition, but as a slightly different discipline with a different outlook. Rather than merely reproduce what can be found at the project site, I'll run over a few quick concepts. Maybe you'll find it interesting as well. In a nutshell - what makes it tiny is that it is basically a kernel, which then relies upon Busybox for the shell/file/unix utilities, including init. You add on as much or little as you like, although there is the total basic commandline / shell offering, or lightweight Xvesa gui desktop to get started. If you want a full blown X11 setup, you ca…

Hello, I'm currently running Gentoo on my BananaPIs (M1). I'm using one as graphical Dashboard using DirectFB. Unfortunately, DirectFB is deprecated, not anymore supported and facing some compilation issue. Time to change. I tried with SDL configured with KMS but it's crashing. I don't want to install X because it will take ages to compile without any garanty it will work at the end. So ... probably the time to change. So, is DirectFB still supported on Armbian ? If not, is SDL2 working without X support. If not, with X support ? And if so, is X accelerated ? Thanks Laurent

Can anyone recomend any displays to be used with these boards? Current options i have are "modified keychain / photoframe" attached to usb bus and or standard HDMI devices im thinking along the lines of an LVDS displayor something driven from the GPIO pins, has anyone any experience with this or am i alone in the dark? Links would be good as this may also benefit others. EDIT : scratch that for the Opi-One, its a camera connector.. will stick with the hacked photoframe idea

After working with sysfs and libgpiod as cross platform solutions I was wondering if there was a faster way using /dev/mem or mmio? I know this gets more bare metal and SBC specific, but for some things you may want absolute speed. https://opensource.com/life/16/4/bulldog-gpio-library for instance claims 1 MHz GPIO writes in Java. However it only supports 3 SBCs as you can see from https://github.com/SilverThings/bulldog. Is there a more generic way to do this and not lose performance? Using my generated JNA wrappers for libgpiod I get about 2K writes per second. In Python I think it's about 70K using libgpiod Python bindings. I realize you may not always need 1 MHz GPIO …

these boards are no longer available, but there are quite a lot of these boards around - they work really well and it would be nice to get an Armbian build for them. There is an image from Odroid for it, but with an outdated 3.14 kernel. There is a working 4.9 Kernel for those boards - I was asking them, if they could update there image with the 4.8 Kernel, but the answer was no - http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=16633&start=100 https://github.com/tobiasjakobi/linux-odroid-public/blob/odroid-4.9.y/README-ODROID.md https://github.com/tobiasjakobi/ http://linux-exynos.org/wiki/Hardkernel_ODROID-X2

Hello guys and girls, I'm new around here, looking for a board to power my network storage needs. Up until now I've been running a 2TB USB3 Seagate Expansion connected to a ASUS AC68U router and things were just fine until free space started to be a problem. Recently I "inherited" a 2TB USB 2 Seagate Expansion which I was thinking of putting to good use. Some other 2.5" SATA HDD's might come my way in the future so I was thinking of taking a stone of the router and building a small NAS. The main usage will be SMB served sequential operations involving video files (daily) and occasional backups. The current numbers stay around 25-30 MB/s writ…

Is there a way to dual RK3399 on one board?

It's *amazing* what you can find reading the Armbian documentation! I dig the shell, even old-school in a virtual terminal or minimal server type setup. Normally that means going through some squinty-eyed hoops to get the Terminus console font installed with larger sizes in the first place on large monitors. Wait - what's this? sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup I did this in a virtual terminal, and allowed setup to pick the right character set for me. Then I blasted the framebuffer with the largest Terminus font size allowed. Perfection! Not a big deal to most, but having this be part of the standard distrib…

I hope this is the right section to post my inquiry, and I hope it doesn't breach any forum policies I'm excited to have learned about this community for the current project I've dreamed up. Some background on me: So, professionally I'm a software engineer with ability to self-teach, solve weird problems, and innovate. Personally, I am annoyed, and amazed that what i dreamt up doesn't already exist, and the versions that do exist are very crude, and unimagined. Yes, I know I'm being cryptic, but bare with me for a moment though. I have a vision for a completely untouched modern take on OS design, and completely possible. _Versions_ of it even already exist rig…

hello dear experts Where would you recommend me to store the Keepass-file? Well - for most of the use-cases usually i have all my personal documents in my cloud account. The pro: i can access it from everywhere in the world. With any device. But besides that i am not so sure if this is safe. Especially if it comes to such things like keepass: Some friends mentioned that it is not so safe: Question; would it be safe to use the cloud for the keepass-file? Can i secure it even further, by adding another (extra) layer of security by encrypting the file. the generalized question is this: How safe is it to store the keepass-file in the (wrong pla…

Hi I have an RK3566 board with a Unisoc UWE5621DS wifi/BT chip on it. I have had a number of kernels running on this board (4.19.209 BSP, 6.0 mainline, 6.1-rc1 mainline) but the wifi is a problem. I noticed that there is an Orange Pi 5.17 kernel that includes a driver for UWE5622. I'm not sure how close 5621DS is to 5622 Also I think that this kernel is meant for the Orange Pi 4 which has an RK3399, whereas I have RK3566. Anyone any thoughts on what is most likely to work?

Hello, If I compile the mainline kernel after a make -j2 Bananapi_defconfig Will I get a suitable kernel or am I obliged to use ARMbian build script ? The question behind is, I'm testing Arch on several (unsupported) SBCs at customers requests, and on the BananaPI-M1, the HDMI is not working, on the OrangePI PC2, both the network and eMMC don't work. Obviously, everything is perfectly working on my ARMbian boxes 😄 Thanks

I think Xunlong should be able to make a Orange Pi Zero with 512MB RAM and Gigabit ethernet for around $10. If they did, would you buy it? Do you think it would be a good product? The H2/H3/H5 is capable of gigabit ethernet, they just need an external ethernet chip that costs about $1. If you think about it. To go from an Orange Pi PC which has 1GB RAM @ $15, to an Orange Pi 2E with 2GB RAM $35, thats more than double the cost to double the RAM. But if you go from an Orange Pi Zero with 100Mbit ethernet at $9 to 1000Mbit ethernet at $10, that's only a 0.1X increase in cost for a 10X increase in performance. That means you get about 10.5x more value for mon…

Hi all, this is my first posting although I've been following armbian for some time. Hopefully this is the right forum area... Does anyone know the availability (or otherwise!) and cost of the Banana Pi Zero? It looks like a board clone of the Pi Zero W but with a different processor. Secondly will/does armbian support it assuming it is available? I have a project using the Pi Zero W but of course they are only available in one off quantities. Cliff

Someone sent a week ago a couple of 2.8" TFT Display ili9341 and asked me to wire it to an H5 and make it work. I had some experience with the ST7789S with Nanopi NEO plus2 and that worked out of the box so i decided to use Nanopi NEO2 as a test bed and used the same wiring scheme. I have managed to wire it and although the FB is created and no error at all but the display is blank (black with no backlight enabled). I just picked up a USB-C hub, it has 3 USB 3.0 ports, 2 SD card slots (standard and micro), a DVI and a GbE ethernet. Using it with my NanoPC T4, and a test with the Renegade Elite (not Armbian) both showed an odd behavior with the GbE, the driver loads, but then claims it doesn't recognize the device after reading it's firmware. Does anyone else have an adapter based on this chip? Hi all! I'm happily using Armbian on Cubieboard2 working as home server (samba, 4(!) LXC containers with Deluge, tor, owncloud and some other small apps) + VPN client. Pretty happy with it, especially for internal SATA. Recently found that Cubietech releases Cubieboard6 on S-500 CPU with same form-factor and SATA. That means, that all casing/housing can stay intact. LXC containers also can be migrated since CPU is still ARMv7. But at the same time found somewhere on this forum, that board is not really good quality... Cannot argue or agree with this since I don't have a board and it looks costly. So my question - what is advis…

I wonder if somebody can help me make a good choice. I'm sorry if I'm a bit rambling but I spent a good part of the weekend looking at different SBCs. I've played around with the early Rasperry Pi, then later on I got a Cubietruck (which still faithfully does network stuff at home) and a Cubox. (Which I wasn't that happy with because I needed a little bit more omph, it was *mostly* fine though) What I'm looking for is an ARM based setup I can do some browsing with, run some lightweight X11 (jwm window manager and some very light programs mostly dependent on X-libraries) and watch videos up to 720p. The screens' resolution would be 1280x1024. It'd b…

Hi guys, do you know some article about how to run DHT11 or DHT22 sensors on Banana Pi? I have one sensor bmp180 on I2C bus and reading temperature and barometric pressure was quite easy but this is different bus and move code from Raspberry needs more effort. Basically I need proper binary able to read from gpio pins and I want to record/show values from this sensor on Rpi Monitor. If somebody have previous experiences with that and want to share them I will be very appreciated.

Hi All, Which SOC gives best performance today for SATA I/O? According to the Sunxi wiki: http://linux-sunxi.org/Sunxi_devices_as_NAS "Since not every A20 based sunxi device uses GMAC networking (or even Ethernet at all) the following devices are the best choices: A20-OLinuXino-Lime2, Banana Pi, Banana Pro or Banana Pi M1+, Cubietruck, Hummingbird A20, Lamobo R1, Orange Pi, Orange Pi Mini or pcDuino3 Nano (Lite)." I've actually got a cubietruck+ here (that uses a terrible USB to sata bridge) but it's a terrible choice. Hoping you guys (or tkaiser ) can steer me in the right direction. I could run out and order a banana pro, but I feel like A20 has been around a whi…

Hello all. I'm looking into enlarging my SBC collection. I'm mainly looking for a board that is power efficient, has got a fast cpu, and at least 2GB of RAM. This for 1080p video rendering with powerbanks, so power efficiency is very important. I'm now looking into the NanoPC-T3+ since it's an Octa core with 2GB of ram. (or the BPi M3?) Does anyone have got experience with this board in LINUX? I see there's an Armbian in testing. How far is this? Is there hardware video acceleration? Does the cpu perform as promised? What is the power consumption on it? I bought the Khadas Vim2 Max for this. But it doesn't perform well at all. It should replace my Odroid…

I appreciate people want to do all sorts of things with their SBCs, but the usage of "cheap PC" must be common, and users will have the expectation of connecting up a HDD or SSD. So I was thinking: how about a M.2 slot instead supporting PCIe x4 so we can buy the biggest, fastest and cheapest per GB SSDs around. You could then eliminate the TF slot, micro-SD cards and eMMC modules, and the system could boot off the drive in the normal Linux manner. I'm not sure where the "support for PCIe x4" comes from, or how much this would affect the price. In the same way, I will probably never use GPIO pins, or IR receivers, cameras, touchscreens, on-board microphones…

It seems like manufacturers should want to sell as many chips as possible, and it seems like they could sell more chips if they released the documentation to allow anyone to implement their product. I don't have the skills yet to write an OS driver, but I know how to write bare-metal embedded d…

Hi, I am an enthusiast of this distro. In this moment I would like to install only CLI version. I write here because I don't want to go off topic. I know that there is the compiler: another very big solution that bring me and attach me at this place! But I am very shure that I will not do the job so well AS Armbian definitively is in the images for the supported SBC. So. I can only deactivate the desktop environment interface or I can start to study hard to build my own Great Armbian CLI version. The problem is that I would have the more RAM free is possible to run another layer software as MINERS or Clusters management. Another reason that we could use the CLI version i…

I'd like to choose an SBC -- running Armbian of course -- for the purpose of processing audio via GStreamer UDP packets. My requirements: -- Half duplex. Must support input (take audio and covert to UDP) and output (decode UDP and generate analog audio) but it is not necessary to handle bidirectional streams simultaneously. One direction at a time is sufficient. -- Process audio with good but not great quality. 16 bit/44.1 kHz is the target bit rate/sample rate. -- First choice of I/O are two 3.5mm jacks on the coastline, one for input and the other for output. -- Second choice of I/O are via GPIO pins. -- I'd rather not use HDMI f…

Hello everybody, I am new to this forum, and stumbled upon Armbian while looking for OS options for the NanoPi M4 board. Great work! The board is running well now, but I do have a few questions: Armbian is WIP, but as NicoD says it's actually very stable. Any idea when it's going to "supported" officially? I did have an issue with the 4.4 kernel, which I worked around. How is your experience with more recent kernels, is it advisable to upgrade? Or will the official image be upgraded from the LibreElec kernel? (Compiling a kernel still seems a little bit daunting to me, although I did it on x86 chips years ago). What timeframe i…

Now the picture is complete, and it's better news than the September note suggested. Three things in Firefox's own code: 1. There's a fallback chain already, and it's three deep. CreateTexture tries zero-copy import first; if that fails it has CreateTextureViaCopyYUV for NV12 and CreateTextureViaCopyP010 for 10-bit. 2. Those fallbacks already use the external-texture machinery — the exact mechanism a whole-frame import needs: aGLContext->fBindTexture(LOCAL_GL_TEXTURE_EXTERNAL, srcTex); aGLContext->fEGLImageTargetTexture2D(LOCAL_GL_TEXTURE_EXTERNAL, mEGLImage[aPlane]); So Firefox can bind a dma-buf as an external texture. It just does it …

I am thinking of connecting up to four 1080p IP cameras and recording to a SATA HDD. Is it better to use a faster H3 board but with slower USB/SATA bridge (say, Orange Pi Plus 2), or a slower A20 board with faster SATA (say, Banana Pi M1+)?

I am in the middle of porting a proof of concept app from Raspberry Pi/Raspbian to its (hopefully) permanent home on Orange Pi PC/Armbian, and I am really loving the new environment. Now I need to get my non-standard HDMI display working. It's a 800x800 circular display from China that works fine on my Raspberry Pi once I figured out what the HDMI timings were (they weren't even on the data sheet!). As I learned when configuring the RPi the display does not report its resolution correctly, so it won't work out of the box, but in Raspbian you have the option to force the system to use your custom configuration defined in the config.txt file. I have …

Hi all. I wanted to put some light on the fact that you now can run some x86 Windows and Linux programs and games on the RK3399 with Box86. I have a topic about it in my lonely "Gaming on ARM club" I've made a preview video about it last week. I've done some further tests. It is just amazing. Plays way better than the RPi4. Tho not yet as many things work. @Salvador Liébana made prebuild images with Box86 preinstalled, and with many other emulators. You can download it here : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gQtgWz2pH2TX9Qs_bcDU9zn7w4edfcVf/view?fbclid=IwAR0SRSC8M_1_qm825n4Bd7bqjLmO30qTpFo73qQQga-TC_LRuc2BVFcGzKU Has been tested on many RK3399 d…

EDIT: The tutorial below is based on outdated instructions. With the most recent Raspbian images the same is possible with less efforts using the g_ether module. All details here: https://gist.github.com/gbaman/975e2db164b3ca2b51ae11e45e8fd40a Today arrived both a RPI 3 and a RPi Zero. I want to use the latter to confirm some consumption measurements we're currently doing to prepare Armbian low-power (or IoT) settings for a couple of boards (see here and here for details) To my surprise I wasn't able to login to RPi Zero without soldering wires or GPIO header since I've no Micro-HDMI cable/adapter, my only Micro-USB adapter is a 90° one preventing to power the bo…
