note: This is from a previous thread about testing, I accidentally moved it, and this was the only way to resume the conversation --- Just kicking off a thread here to talk about different ideas around testing. It would be great if the community could help test more.,,, but what would it look like.... maybe end users can burn a test image and run a test script. the script could do cool things like: * spi loopback test * check for healthy kernel modules * look for dmesg errors * test wifi * test ethernet * test audio? * even run a phoronix test of somesort to validate a particular feature. Are there any simple circuit diagrams people could desi…

Release Candidate Code Freeze Date: TBD Release Planning Meeting Date: 2021-10-16 1400GMT Release Date: TDB Release Candidate Branch Link: TBD Release Changelog: TBD Release Coordinator: @igor We are in doubts to make this release at all due to overall project strengthening and focus on securing maintainers and cut HW which doesn't have it. Alternative idea is to produce a release as is with minimal changes and focus on bug fixing straight from today. https://armbian.atlassian.net/browse/AR-702 (Don't worry I only tagged it for the 21.08 Release -- so we have plenty of time to think this through) Armbian provides a lot of extra device tree improvements for support. Currently they’re added to the build system via patches, which is very difficult to follow. We need a new approach that makes our device tree files and overlays more visible within the Armbian-build framework.. as well as make it easier for us to upstream our faces to SoC maintainer kernel trees. Obviously lots to figure out here. Tagging a few.. please tag more @martinayotte @TonyMac32@Igor@Rich Ne…

In the past few weeks I have been working to improve processes of deploying our work. Scripts that runs in the background are combination of tools that are build into the main tool and additional scripts that run on the server. They are (will be) summed in a (private) scripts repository, but the functioning - which could be interested for any maintainer - are summed in this document: https://docs.armbian.com/Process_CI/ Welcome to add your ideas, especially for the merge request part, which remain unchanged. Otherwise its planned to extend this automation to execute tests, similar or the one from @William Bonnet on virtual image (image already boots insit…

Greetings, I'm currently modifying the Armbian build system, making it easier to add new desktop environments and application groups. This architecture is subject to heavy modifications until it is merged with the current Armbian build system. A repository with the modified build system is available here : https://github.com/Miouyouyou/armbian-desktop Currently, I only tested adding Ubuntu Focal + XFCE and application groups, since I had to make sure that the postinst and create_desktop_package.sh were actually aggregated correctly, now that they're split into multiple files, and, for comparison, we only have such …

I have compiled to test new armbian 5.04 in a banana pro (Output: Armbian_5.04_Bananapipro_Debian_jessie_4.4.3.zip). At the first boot it is asking for the new user: login as: root root@192.168.178.30's password: Thank you for choosing Armbian! Support: www.armbian.com Creating new account. Please provide a username (eg. your forename): I introduce whatever username and after that the system is booting. There is a loop continuously because after the boot, if I try to login with root, aks again for user but if I login with a created new user doesn't work because the password not was asked before and therefore is not accepting a password. There was recently a discussion on an issue over on github dealing with an issue that popped up when building Armbian within a Docker container. Following on from there, it was decided that it would be a good idea to document the build process using Docker, and adding a howto, best practices, and FAQ to the main Armbian documentation. (I've put my hand up to coordinate this.) Using Docker is a good alternative to a VM, and particularly for anyone on macOS or Windows. So to kick off the thread, it'll be good just to discuss what should go into the docs. Also to see if anyone is interested in building with Docker and hasn't done so yet.

Hello, everyone, I found a very serious issue with Armbian build framework: build may corrupt your host's rootfs! This has happened to my system 3 times: my rootfs has been totally destroyed without being able to recover it (I used a number tools, like testdisk, etc. All of the tools detected some deleted files but all of those files appeared to be 0-sized). I have delayed reporting this to be 100% sure that it is Armbian build that caused those issues. Now I am, absolutely, because such a problem NEVER happened to me before (I have been using Ubuntu 16.04 for a long time). After 2nd crash I changed my HDD to a brand new one and installed all again …

Please forgive the badly formatted post, I am a bit new here. I was trying to overclock my RockPro64 and ended up writing a device tree overlay (and a rather rudimentary one at that). wasn't sure how to contribute it so I am posting the code here instead. Please note, however, that up until yesterday, I had never written a device tree overlay, so this will not be in the correct format by any stretch of the imagination. I just figured I would post them here as a starting point for anyone who wishes to create a properly formatted dts file to contribute. I got the values that I used from this page on the pine64 wiki: https://wiki.pine64.o…

Hello, guys, is this possible to choose a custom board-specific kernel config located in "userpatches" based on $BOARD variable? I am trying to customize different boards and I have no idea how to provide a specific config for, let's say, sun6i bananapi and sun8i orangepipc when I build "next" kernel, because all of them are covered by linux-sunxi-next.config. It seems like I need to change your scripts but I wouldn't like to.. Thanks.

This topic is a response to the growing number of kernels, growing number of boards with... "unique properties", and for the increased complexity of some platofrms (aarch64 and the atf, etc). I think the coherency of the chosen organizational method is starting to fall apart. So just a thought experiment on my part: Currently, we have a sources directory, and the sources file has not just sources, but also executable script functions in it. We also do our patches per SoC, mostly, but the organization is by the thing being compiled rather than by the target, making finding/adjusting a bit cumbersome in some cases. I would propose a di…

Hi, I'm looking for the simplest way to provide a custom uboot configuration to the Armbian build system. I have read (I think I did not miss something obvious) the documentation pages how to customize Armbian build, but the doc is mostly focused on specifying alternate source version or applying custom patches, while I only need a way to specify an already existing uboot config (generated with make menuconfig from the existing, installed Armbian sources). What would be the best way to tell Armbian to use an alternate uboot configuration? Thanks, Emmanuel.

I found root of my card not resized to maximum space available. Unfortunately when I run out of space. Consider adding missing package btrfs-progs to minimal image or warn user when building of such system image is complete so user can resize root manually before the sd card is inserted.

Hello, while reading the build tools scripts I found this part of the license text to be fishy: # This file is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public # License version 2. Can I get confirmation, so I can prepare a PR for changing all the (cut'n'pasted) occurrences ?

thinking of http://forum.armbian.com/index.php/topic/2043-lamobo-r1-520-swconfig-problem-with-last-520-armbian-update/?p=15773 We may ask the forum users and create a list of testers for each board (or family of boards) => we could create a sub forum Armbian/Tech/Dev/Armbian build framework/Testing/ - to call for testers when needed (testers would register a pined thread managed by Igor/Mikhail/Thomas/others) - to report testing on the forum using a title like [5.20/Lamobo-R1] "Status" (OK/KO/minor issues) - create bug reports in appropriate forum each registered testers creates its minimum set of test (like testing the switch config of Lamobo-R1) and cr…

Hello there Maintainers! o/ I have found something while builiding my image and would like to ask for your opinion on that :-) I have built a Docker build environment where things are going real smooth (After some tinkering ;-) In order to save everyone's bandwidth (and be able to do builds while offline), I was tinkering with IGNORE_UPDATES=yes FORCE_CHECKOUT=no compile option. Well. That causes the build to fail, because after the first compile and its patch, a second round with these flags will cause the patch to be applied again and potentially breaking stuffs. I'm circumventing it by moving the p…

I am trying to build an updated image for an orange pi zero using the mainline buster headless. I tried on an ubuntu 20.04 VM (on a fedora host) and on a natively ubuntu20.04 installed laptop. Hello all, maybe I missed that part in the docs or in another thread... In fact, I haven't found a solution. I'd like to include a custom kernel repository in the build process (maybe in kernel-only mode) and select that in the interface if available. Either include a remote directory (github...) or some local directory. That all for easily trying things out without using the single-patches directory but using the armbian building environment. I couldn't find the lines in the build scripts, where I easily can "hardcode" such a kernel tree. Ultimate way would be an additional option for a custom kernel tree, chooseable via the menu. Can someone point me into …

I've come into a problem, my build system refuses to build images. I haven't been able to debug it, so I'm curious if anyone else in North America is having this trouble? Hello, I've got a problem with DNS resolving and customize-image.sh. One setup works (home), one setup does not (office). Both setups are OS X (different major versions), Virtual Box (different major versions), Network Bridging and Ubuntu 14.04. Building images (Banana Pi M1/M2/R1 jessie next) without customize-image.sh works perfectly, espacially the apt-get stuff, which needs DNS resolving. The working home setup uses dynamic (DHCP) private RFC1918 IPs (and/or public IPv6 IPs). The nonworking office setup uses public static IPv4 IPs for OS X and Ubuntu. The build process works flawlessly until customize-image.sh is executed. Some excerpts of cust…

I need customization in configuration file for: a) DISTROS=("jessie" "xenial" "stretch" "bionic") b) ${SCRIPTPATH}config/armbian.key I want to make patch for it, but I need a few decisions: 1. Should I use lib.config as the configuration source? Maybe we prefer a separate file? 2. Can I unify RELEASE_LIST=("xenial" "jessie" "stretch" "bionic") from build-all and DISTROS=("jessie" "xenial" "stretch" "bionic") from repository.sh into one common parameter? 3. Do we accept the name for the parameter: GPG_PUBLIC_KEY=config/armbian.key?

This might be more targeted towards security, but building Armbian should not be as a root/privileged user... https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_Build-Preparation/#how-to-start OpenWRT builds fine as a normal user account, does not need elevated access. Also - FWIW - the local build directory should be armbian, not build - too many other things use /build. @Igor-- thoughts here?

I would like to know the content of u-boot-s905x-s912 and u-boot-s905x2-s922 at the boot dir. of armbian release . Is there a tool to de-compile these script to plain text ? Sorry if this question had been asked or answered . I didnot find any clues from searching at this forum. Thanks !

Hi all I am working on having a working cpufreq support for Allwinner H5 SoC According to the mainline plan, it won't happen anytime soon (it is not even scheduled for 4.13) However some (working) patches already exist, there is a quite updated fork at: https://github.com/megous/linux Reading the provided information, there is also an absolutely required patch for u-boot that fix a PLL1 configuration Apparently this patch is already included in Armbian, it is the patch: But for some reason I really don't understand, this is not applied to the u-boot source, the file doesn't contain the patch. Other patches in u-boot-sun50i-dev are applied correct…

Hello, guys, I need your help with building an image with kernel 4.15 ("dev") for bananapi m1+ (can't use "next" because I need the new display engine). First of all, I need to transfer patches from 4.14 so that I can create my own overlays. Can you tell me which patches I need to look at , besides "add-overlay-compilation-support.patch" ? Thank you

Hello, I am enjoying tinkering with the armbian build tools to customize images. I notice it takes about 2 hours to do a build on my machine. I am just making changes to the customize-image.sh and would like to know if there is an option to retain the default install image and just run the customization process? Thanks Neil

Hi, I’m trying to integrate the newly released hostapd 2.7 into an image and I’m having trouble including it as a part of the image build process (bionic on vagrant - by the book). Hello guys, I am trying to build another kernel within your framework. Here is what I did: 1) copied sun8i.conf to userpaches/sources and modified kernel source url and branch 2) copied patches to userpatches/kernel/sun8i-dev and removed those that made compilation fail I was able to compile u-boot and kernel, but in the end I am getting the following issue: dpkg-deb: error: failed to read archive '/home/sergey/Projects/orangepi/armbian/output/debs/linux-image-dev-sun8i_5.32_armhf.deb': No such file or directory [ o.k. ] Kernel build done [ @host ] [ o.k. ] Target directory [ /home/sergey/Projects/orangepi/armbian/output/de…

For some days now I get the following error trying to build C4 images. I attempted the --fix-missing, apt update apt upgrade etc, still this after some time in compilation. Running in a Virtualbox direct session, no Vagrant or the like. Had been working fine for quite some time, went a few weeks and decided to rebuild and got this error. Is it trying to download from my own machine? What to do?

I have a really slow internet connection and I'm doing alot of re-building Armbian and target systems etc. I have a copy of apt-cacher running on a local machine, I know how to configure it on target machines but I'm not sure how I would point the Armbian build system at it? At a guess I'm thinking that I probably need to modify debootstrap to create /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/90-apt-proxy.conf but wondered if anyone had any better ideas?

In recent weeks, I have been testing a new approach to using the source code for external WiFi modules (RTL). Previously, I regularly got build environment crash issues due to unpredictable source updates for EXTRAWIFI. These sources are scattered in different places and absolutely do not predictably change, breaking the kernel build. I'm tired of tracking such situations and regularly spending time creating emergency patches to restore the build process (or having to temporarily disable the EXTRAWIFI build). I compiled and placed all the sources in one controlled GIT. I still have them my GIT, but if your decide to switch to a new version of the build, it is advisable t…

Does anyone else have to run testdisk regularly after writing Armbian images to SD cards? First, I'd like to say thank you for creating this. I have a Pine64 board and have built and loaded an Ubuntu Armbian build on the board. I'm now looking to develop custom software which will include a custom audio driver and custom audio software. I anticipate this means one or more custom kernel modules and custom user space software. I've read through all the documentation and will begin experimenting, but thought I'd check to see if somebody has created a cookbook style recipe for the following: 1. Kernel development: incrementally modifying the kernel, building and deploying on the test board. I can see deployment through the created .deb files, but…

Hello, It seems like the 'FORCE_MODULE_UNLOAD' parameter was (set to?) 'N' during the generation of the Armbian kernels. I know it's potentially dangerous to use it, but since the community is doing a lot of experimenting it would be convenient sometimes if this is enabled. Does this mean I have to compile a kernel with this option enabled myself, or is it possible to turn it on in future builds?

Just a thought. Over half of the boards we support feature a 26 or 40 RPi compatible GPIO header and all the other boards expose various protocols and GPIO on various pins and headers. Users coming from Raspbian and trying out any of our boards expect that basics work the same. While it's both impossible and not desirable to be 100% compatible with Raspbian a few things would make transition from Raspbian to Armbian for IoT folks more easy. Simple example: Default user pi in Raspbian has access to GPIO pins -- on Armbian it's currently root only. How's that done? A group called gpio exists in Raspbian, pi is added to it and /etc/udev/rules.d/99-com…

Hey, I'm trying to lock kernel version to 4.11. The documentation is talking about the variable ARMBIAN_MAINLINE_KERNEL_VERSION, which does not do anything, as the script does not take it into account and still clone the last version of kernel (4.13) I cheat and copy KERNELBRANCH='branch:linux-4.11.y' instead in userpatches/lib.config which seems to do the job. What is wrong then ? Documentation or me ? Thanks Florian

Mainline kernel 4.7 brought separate Device Tree configuration for Lime2-eMMC board. What should we do with this board? There's been discussion in the past of switching to a YY.MM naming convention for releases (similar to Ubuntu) [citation needed -- I think it may be buried deep inside a github discussion] How does that impact us as a rolling release? What do we want to convey with our versions/releases? Should we do monthly releases? quarterly? I do think time-based releases would help us with priority.

Happy new year and thanks for the good work ! I see there is a (buster) image available for my Odroid N2 with kernel 5.4. A few weeks ago I set up the build environment and started building my own images. First images were build using the 4.9 kernel from Hardkernel. Later the images were build with kernel 5.1 (and BRANCH=default). However, the image with kernel 5.4 was not build today but the kernel 5.1 is still used for the image, although I changed the BRANCH=default (as it was before) to BRANCH=dev. How can I create a new armbian image with kernel 5.4 ? I read some posts about a new u-boot. Is this new u-boot…

Hi there, while the customize-image.sh got some attention lately because of OMV integration, I've started a try to enhance the customization process. At the moment any changes to the script are valid for the whole buildenv. I've been doing a little housekeeping with github issues and PR's to eliminate noise or bring closure. I've created a STALE label for issues that lack closure or don't have clear actionable items and closing. Hopefully that makes them easy to revisit later if one is interested. I've also posted some follow-ups on a few to try to get things moving and merged a few PRs while applying extreme discretion. Let me know if I do anything you disagree with or want me to back off. I'm trying to be mindful of everyone's work.
