I'm trying to add some extra packages and configuration changes to build v20.08. I did the following: git clone -b v20.08 https://github.com/armbian/build build-orange-pi-v20.08 cd build-orange-pi-v20.08 && git reset --hard 6e9b07e touch .ignore_changes ./compile.sh docker BRANCH=current BOARD=orangepizero KERNEL_ONLY=no KERNEL_CONFIGURE=no RELEASE=buster BUILD_DESKTOP=no CLEAN_LEVEL="" NO_APT_CACHER=yes The build ends with "ERROR in function compile_kernel [ compilation.sh:411 ]" When I clone the master without sticking to a revision, it's working fine. But I want to stick to an "official" build. How can this …

Hi rtl8189FS was added on august and the version at include/rtw_version.h is v4.3.18.1_15373.20151005 At http://linux-sunxi.org/Wifi#RTL8189FTV I see that the recommended repository is https://github.com/jwrdegoede/rtl8189ES_linux/tree/rtl8189fs That repository use v4.3.24_15589.20151023 There is also newer versions, now I'm patching v4.3.24.6_20019.20161107 https://github.com/CGarces/rtl8189FS Any one has tested this newer versions? maybe @martinayotte ?

Hi I want to build armbian for nanopi neo with a different mainline. What I have done is 1. added lib.config file in userpatches with statement ARMBIAN_MAINLINE_KERNEL_VERSION='4.9' that didn't work, I still get a 4.10.1 kernel build 2. then changed configration.sh ARMBIAN_MAINLINE_KERNEL_VERSION='4.9' that didn't work either, I got 4.10.1 kernel build Any other tricks? -jerry

@Igor Could we imagine another mechanism than to use git as an "upload front-end" ? Using git as some kind of spool folder is really not ideal. For instance if I clone today the armbian upload git project the size of the objects is already reaching 1.2 GB for a project that is essentially just a structure of empty folders. I even see the following error during cloning Cloning into 'upload'... remote: Enumerating objects: 75, done. remote: Counting objects: 100% (75/75), done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (61/61), done. kex protocol error: type 7 seq 49316022.52 MiB | 6.67 MiB/s remote: Total 844 (delta 33), reused 40 (delta 14), pack-reuse…

1. What is the purpose when compilation errors are sent to a common output and then branched to a file? It turns out a million lines. It is reasonable to have only compiler error messages. 2. What is the purpose when the kernel-source package is built with include the folder /.git/? It is not traditional 3. Why folder with sources not cleared fully before compilation? git commands: git reset --hard HEAD; git clean -df guarantee a clean sheet before starting work

Hello, guys, may I ask you to fix the code below so that I can put my custom "sun6i.conf" file into "userpatches/sources/" ? Currently your code makes it impossible because LINUXFAMILY variable is forcibly set to "sunxi" in sunxi_common.inc file. What you can easily do is introducing a new variable so that one can know that LINUXFAMILY was overwritten. configuration.sh -------------------------------------------- [[ ! -f $SRC/config/sources/$LINUXFAMILY.conf ]] && \ exit_with_error "Sources configuration not found" "$LINUXFAMILY" source $SRC/config/sources/$LINUXFAMILY.conf if [[ -f $SRC/userpatches/s…

I'm trying to build an image that includes armbian-firmware-full by specifying it in lib.config but it fails, I believe it is due to armbian-firmware being installed by default. What is the proper way to build an image with armbian-firmware-full instead of armbian-firmware?

I found "lib/patch/kernel/sun8i-default/30-real-time143-full-plus-rt-fixes.patch.disabled." So, just renamed it to .patch. and build default (Vendor provided / legacy) of version 3.4.113. It looks like the GH repo is being renamed from https://github.com/igorpecovnik/lib to https://github.com/armbian/build However, the scripts still point to the old location. What are the plans for the GH repo? Is armbian/build the new official location and the scripts will be updated in time? Would a PR be welcome that updates the scripts to the new repo location? Cheers,

Hi there, i try to compile a kernel via: apt-get -y install git git clone https://github.com/igorpecovnik/lib--depth 1 cp lib/compile.sh . chmod +x compile.sh ./compile.sh In compile.sh, i changed: KERNEL_ONLY="yes" and added KERNELTAG="v4.3.5" I get an error which can be seen in the attached file. I was able to compile 4.3.4 on the same machine, so i do not expect enironment issues. Any hint? Thx, A.

Hi, I used armbian build many times to create my custom orangepipcplus images without any problem until now. It was working perfect. But, it started to fail today and couldn't build the image. To prevent any mistake, I created a new Oracle VirtualBox VM by using Bionic minimal iso and follow the steps on https://github.com/armbian/build but still no luck. It still gives same error and fails. I try to build by options "Full OS image for flashing", "Do not change the kernel configuration", "next Mainline (@kernel.org), "xenial Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 LTS", "Image with consol interface (server)", "Standard image with console interface" for orangepipcplus and withou…

How to use this variable ? Tried to set different options, but when compiling the kernel aarch64, always use the system version 4.8. Set both variables in the config file, the variable UBOOT_TOOLCHAIN is triggered (begins to use the written version), and this variable does not change either as the compiler. This is my local problem not correct the system configuration or the same situation with the others ? For now I solve this problem rough hack - point in the variable PATCH user, the first desired directory with the compiler. Another associated question in the script general.sh in lines 471-474, with a list of packages for the host system specified compilers, including …

As far as I can tell, many, if not all, targets generate an identical postinst script for the linux-headers package by patching scripts/package/builddeb. A search of the Armbian build repo for "Compiling headers - please wait" produces 33 code results. This means that improving the postinst script (for example, as discussed here) requires updating 33 patch files. I'd be happy to help improve the situation, but I'm unsure how to proceed. Could we have a global postinst script for the linux-headers package, and somehow copy it into place? or must we use a patch file?

I've been using ./compile.sh to play around booting a NanoPi Neo via FEL and come across an issue when using the default branch. When I build using "BRANCH=dev" it boots but when using ./compile.sh KERNEL_ONLY=no BRANCH=default BOARD=nanopineo PROGRESS_DISPLAY=plain RELEASE=jessie BUILD_DESKTOP=no ROOTFS_TYPE=fel The resulting kernel doesn't boot and shows the following error via serial on the Neo. "Error: unrecognized/unsupported machine ID (r1 = 0x00000000)" I found extracting output/cache/sdcard/boot/boot.scr, adding "setenv machid 1029" and generating the boot.scr image again I was able to get it to boot. First. Thanks for so great work in the ARMBIAN community. Any word of gratitude will not be enough. I have been installing Linux on different SBC. Some of them are supported by ARMBIAN, others not. There are some that never will be supported (as the Parallella 16). And the ARMBIAN process it is very clean for the already refined machines. However, when trying to bring up some other machine, it is complicated to understand what to do, how and where, as the process have been evolving for a long period of time. Recently I began to work with @chwe on the BPI-R2, and my first job is to make the nand-sata-install to work. So, I prepared an image to check this, to s…

In my customize-image.sh I need to dowload source via git and make it like user and not like root. Example of customize-image.sh: git clone https://github.com/xxx/xxx /home/pi/xxx su -c "sudo -S /home/pi/xxx/xxx.sh" - pi This work when I build image for OrangePi4 (and all other rk3399 board) It dosen't work when build image for sun8i board like OrangePi Lite. Both git and su command return error and compilation fail. This happen with legacy and mainline kernel, with ubuntu or debian.

The new vagrant method looks like it is broken.. In case anyone else needs help with this. These steps create an oven-baked .img complete with all custom goodies on board from the get-go. 1. rysnc custom code and any other local dependencies into userpatches/overlay 2. Ensure any library dependencies (libv4l-dev in this case) are met by adding 'PACKAGE_LIST="$PACKAGE_LIST libv4l-dev"' to userpatches/lib.config 3. Step 1 ensures that the target image will have content in /tmp/overlay. In userpatches/customize-image.sh one needs to move said content from the read-only directory to somewhere suitable (/test in my case) 4. Finally have customize-image.sh run the relevant build system and optionall…

Rebuilding kernel several times in a row, made some changes, that would be nice to have in build script by default, and also some thoughts on custom kernel patches. 1.Option to not overwrite kernel config before compilation. Example: setting KERNEL_KEEP_CONFIG="yes" in build.sh Changes (common.sh): # use proven config if [ "$KERNEL_KEEP_CONFIG" != "yes" ]; then cp $SRC/lib/config/$LINUXCONFIG.config $SOURCES/$LINUXSOURCE/.config; fi 2. Option to use ccache for kernel compilation (at least). ccache can be set by creating symlinks for cross-compiling tools, but having an option in build script is more useful and easier IMHO. Example: setting USE_CCACHE="yes" in bu…

Hello, I understand plainly zador.blood.stain for keeping the one-liner version of compile.sh I am dumb guy with low memory in brain and I prefer a config file per board (I am using one file for XU4, one for OPi+2E, one for Lamobo-R1, one generic file for playing) instead of a file with plenty of one liners for compile.sh But I have *just* used the plain original (updated) version of Armbian lib and I felt coming back to the Age of ICE (everything is root and sudo, no possible proper CTRL-C of compile.sh to restore all files with user id&group $HOME/.ccache is root, impossible to use RSA keys for forked version of lib (to push/pull) -- unless using the RSA…

Hello, I know this will be a controversial subject, but I often like to see what's happening in a devel repository by browsing commits. I start by looking at the commit titles (first commit message line) to approximate the interest that particular entry is to me, then if deemed interesting, I'll read the full commit message to understand what it is about, then if still interested I'll go read the code. I think this is a fairly straightforward approach to digging in a codebase or development stream, avoiding to loose time on things outside of interest scope, and allowing to focus on specific subjects. So, in order for this workflow to be doable, the commit …

How can I obtain the kernel sources for a specific image and build the modules the same as those installed? I am running into structure version differences when I build the mainline, then apply to my test system, and I don't want to run the test system on mainline, as I need the stability of the legacy kernel. I know there are certain options to build and ignore structure version differences as long as the structure is similar, but it would seem most pertinent to obtain the correct source for the kernel I am running, copy the .config to the build machine and then build the image. This then allows me to easily switch between different kernel modul…

Hello everyone, I have been using a pre-built Armbian image on a Nanopi M1 Plus and I have been very happy with it. However I have several modifications specific to my usage of the board (setup some files in /etc/, create default users, install or remove some packages, etc.) that I would like to add to the image in a repeatable way. By repeatable I mean that I could add the set of scripts/patches/packages etc. to source control so that other people could them rebuild the same exact image. Hello, not sure if I'm at the right place here, so please let me know if I'm wrong and where I need to be. Thanks in advance and my apologies... My problem is that for some time now does Apt keep deleting custom kernels in /boot and the package appears to delete kernels not only with a rough pattern, but with "-f" as well, ignoring any file permissions. I've been watching this for a while now and it has left me at first with unbootable devices until I've noticed the cause. I would very much appreciate it of the Armbian kernel package wouldn't just delete anything that looks remotely like a kernel from /boot with a "rm -f *", but only removes the fi…

Hello. I have some problem, building image from source. I am trying to configure "next" with linux-vanilla (4.6.2) and built an Armbian image then booted from SDcard (removing my eMMC) So far, Samsung OSG provided examples of vanilla kernel @jobenvil tested 4.6 kernel but compiled on board WITH partition using UUID instead of /dev/mmc I got 4 cores in the "basic" model (4 little => 4 BIG), network, HDD issue: mixing uboot 2012.07 and vanilla kernel it seems /dev/mmcblk0 doesn't exist for uboot 2012 only boot.ini works with root=/dev/mmcblk1p2 to quick fix the problem I put /dev/mmcblk1p2 for root partition in boot.ini * I know how to manipulate UUID and partition => is it possible to put spec…

Hi, I am adding support of my board to armbian framework and I have several questions: 1. I added my u-boot & kernel but when I build package for kernel, it creates linux-image-4.14.98-sabre_5.94_armhf.deb instead of linux-image-sabre_5.94_armhf.deb so I have to remove version from from file name in compilation.sh or image creation process would fail. Is it possible to define name of .deb package? I guess I just missed something in my kernel config file. 2. u-boot & linux-image packages are installed successful but I have to add default links to kernel & device tree files by hands or update u-boot scripts by hand. Is it p…

Hello guys I recently moved my build into VirtualBox in order to protect my host's rootfs from potential corruption. Everything went ok, build is working fine. For my project I would like to share toolchains that Armbian has already downloaded on first start. Is it possible to customize the path where toolchains are stored so that I can point to a shared folder? Thank you

Hello, I'm planning to use Armbian for a custom distribution (target is Orange Pi Zero, for now). Usually, for this kind of job I use Yocto. But this time, I intend to use the board as a ROS server, and quite frankly, integrating ROS into Yocto is quite painful. As it will be used only for a hobby robotics project, I don't really mind using another method. So, the thing is, I intend to create a customized Armbian distro with ROS preinstalled. But, I will also need to cross-compile and install some of my own projects. I was wondering, what is the most standard way to cross-compile (mostly C++, here, but whatever) a project for int…

Hello At first, I would like to tell how I think your work you do on the arm boards is great. Looking actively for an alternative to the official Odroid Ubuntu image, I downloaded and installed the Armbian image on a SD card with dd and booted on the Odroid-C2 board. I made a first boot and a update/upgrade cycle on the SD card before to transfer the ext4 (root) partition with rsync (with the basic : -aAXv --exclude={"/dev/*","/proc/*","/sys/*","/tmp/*","/run/*","/mnt/*","/media/*","/lost+found", options) to an empty, new made ext4-partition on a 16 Gb-USB 3.0-drive. The OS boots well on the USB device (changed the boot.ini and fstab files as below) and I conn…

Hello. Maybe this is discussed already, but i can't find anything with the search. I have some modifications in kernel and other things and i have my own build image of Debian Jessie and deb-s with this modifications. Version 4.84 of legacy 3.4.110 kernel. The most important for me is contiguous memory allocator - CMA, which solved my problem mentioned here - http://forum.armbian.com/index.php/topic/559-lamobo-r1-hardware-accelerated-driver/ , other things i can do under working system later, but i add them in image for ease. The problem is, after latest upgrade every modification is gone, of course. I made a new deb-s, version 5.0 with CMA enabled and apply them, but wh…

hey there, compilation noob here. I've been working on the rtl8189fs patches for Mainline. Althouth the source code change between Legacy and Mainline is pretty trivial, preparing good and nice patches becomes a tedious task : - First, the original patch in Legacy contains tons of DOS file formatted (strange for a Linux driver, shame on Realtek) and even dos2unix failed on some files because of binaries character (probably Chinese), I had to edit many files because I wouldn't "signed-off" such ugly thing. (btw, maybe that dos2unix job should be done one Legacy to make it cleaner) - It is a quick big patch, but about the same size as the one in Legacy, about 10MB of text file. - Even after …

I added a while back 'free' output to 'armbianmonitor' and 'armhwinfo' to get some monitoring data from real-world installations about swap usage. Armbian uses an emergency swap file of 128MB by default (vm.swappiness=0) which means swapping should be avoided unless really needed. Let's have a look and extract data from +50 support URLs collected within the last months. I piped the output of https://pastebin.com/raw/DjxAX6Rn through while read ; do curl -q "${REPLY}" | grep '^Swap: '; done | sort | uniq -c and this is what we end with: 175 Swap: 127M 0B 127M 1 Swap: 127M 22M 105M 1 Swap: …

Hi devs, I would like to discuss our default settings for the small NanoPi H3 boards that lack HDMI output capabilities (so the use cases are pretty clear: we're talking about headless servers or IoT nodes). Based on some research done the last few weeks I would like to start with these settings: HDMI/Mali400 disabled (for obvious reasons, also this is responsible for some severe energy savings -- can't tell numbers but this is the most efficient measure together with drastically reducing DRAM clockspeed) maximum CPU clockspeed by default 1200 MHz in fex file but 912 MHz in cpufrequtils' settings so that the boards remain at 1.1V by default and also maximum consumpti…

mainline u-boot can read boot menu from extlinux.conf, and provides a menu to console or display (if support), which is more friendly to boot.scr and debian provides a tool: u-boot-menu to update extlinux.conf. in order to use u-boot-menu in armbian, need to update kernel build scripts, need to follow debian's build rules. or make change to u-boot-menu to fit armbian's kernel.

some simple thoughts to help (assuming limited time consumption) - adding a short "Roadmap" (main & side quests) section (in docs.armbian.com/Process_Contribute/ ?) displaying "main" goals for current & possible next iterations because currently the single tasks is the forum are useful but not "readable" - a (google group?) mailing list (read only) for contributors (to push roadmap changes & call for tasks) - a separate mailing list (read only) to call testers when needed - a page to report testing per board (wiki? google web document?)

Based on discussions the last days/weeks it seems obvious to me that we should document default Armbian security so that people know what they get and where to tweak if they have specific concerns. I took a few minutes to start with a list of issues that should IMO be addressed (no specific order): Explain where password strength policies originate Restore distro default sshd settings if concerned: sed -i 's/PermitRootLogin yes/PermitRootLogin without-password/' /etc/ssh/sshd_config Use and purpose of haveged: https://github.com/igorpecovnik/lib/issues/503 'Secure delete' on SD card, eMMC or SSD (overwriting contents on the FS layer requires a sync call if followed …

Ideally I'd like to get a structure in place that rebuilds armbian with each commit to igorpecovnik/lib. I'd love people's ideas on the best way to go about this. I am pretty good with jenkins and all his pals, so if you have a favorite, please do let me know. Dockerfile Any feedback? It should work even on systems that don't have the needed native ubuntu 14.04 Vagrantfile Just used it to make a build myself, seems to be working fine, though there's some troubleshooting to be done with the build. Unsure what the source of the issue is, and had build mainline for opi, so instead I will now build opi-oldkernel.

If I checked the configuration correctly, only Cubox, S500 and Udoo* don't have HAVE_UUID_SUPPORT=yes set, but AFAIK all boot scripts now load the initrd. @Igor can you add and test root by UUID on those boards? Also boot scripts for more boards could use /boot/ambianEnv.txt, I already tested it on XU4 and will try to test it on C2, will anybody be able to test it on C1 or C0 (it has much older u-boot)? If I remember correctly there were some problems either on Cubox or Udoo, but hopefully it can work on most of the left over configurations.

Hi, while testing with various sun8i legacy builds with connected display it came to my attention that kernel always panics at shutdown (in fact I was all the time doing a reboot so it took me some time to notice this). I tried to replace our rmmod example here with this code for module in $(cut -f1 -d' ' </proc/modules) ; do rmmod -f ${module} ; done But to no avail. Still on shutdown or reboot the kernel panics, waits 10 seconds and reboots then. Behaviour might be related to recent kernel additions (FriendlyARM Matrix stuff)? And the other question is which drawbacks the above code could have?

It seems to me like we currently have at least 2-3 separate initiatives going on which are in some way at least touching upon the very heart of the project (the build system). I wanted to bring attention to them and begin a high level strategic discussion of what the best way forward might be. I expect this will take some significant time for everyone to really have a chance to weigh in and (ideally) eventually to come to some sort of consensus. I will confess that I don't even really understand the build system myself. In fact I think only a few people really do. So as a side effect I hope to increase my own understanding. And eventually improve document…

Would it be possible to add an option build parameter, something along the lines of BUILD_MINIMAL_DISTRO to the compile system? Allowing it as a command line option to compile.sh would be great as well. The purpose of the new option would be to use an alternative PAKETKI variable with only the packages absolutely required for running the system and configuring networking (ideally Ethernet and WiFI) without the bloat of bluez, stress etc. It would also be great if there was a call after install_external_applications to a user provided script that allows the user to install any additional packages that they require. There may be reasons not to do this and / or …
