  1. Started by TRS-80,

It seems to me like we currently have at least 2-3 separate initiatives going on which are in some way at least touching upon the very heart of the project (the build system). I wanted to bring attention to them and begin a high level strategic discussion of what the best way forward might be. I expect this will take some significant time for everyone to really have a chance to weigh in and (ideally) eventually to come to some sort of consensus. I will confess that I don't even really understand the build system myself. In fact I think only a few people really do. So as a side effect I hope to increase my own understanding. And eventually improve document…

  5. I don't really know if this is related to Armbian, but I have a USB disk that is not recognised when plugged into USB 3 (blue port) but it works in USB2.0 port. I have also tried SanDisk Ultra USB3.0 and it works. Shouldn't the USB3.1 also support USB3.0 if it supports USB2.0 ?

  6. If I checked the configuration correctly, only Cubox, S500 and Udoo* don't have HAVE_UUID_SUPPORT=yes set, but AFAIK all boot scripts now load the initrd. @Igor can you add and test root by UUID on those boards? Also boot scripts for more boards could use /boot/ambianEnv.txt, I already tested it on XU4 and will try to test it on C2, will anybody be able to test it on C1 or C0 (it has much older u-boot)? If I remember correctly there were some problems either on Cubox or Udoo, but hopefully it can work on most of the left over configurations.

Hello everyone, since i couldn't find a section for the NanoPi Neo/M1 (or maybe i just overlooked it), and the OrangePi One is rather close to it anyways, i'll post it here. Would there be interrest in a 3.4.112 kernel tree with the preempt_rt patches (rt143) added? I got myself said NanoPi's some days ago, and started to patch my way up from the original sunxi kernel 3.4.39 to the 3.4.112 version, then added the preempt_rt patches, and finally added (most?) patches from the Armbian build. Obviously manually adding the rejects. I'm also having a U-Boot 2016.09-rc1 that i have slightly patched to have it use uEnv.txt instead of boot.scr, because i got too annoyed t…

I've been working on the rtl8189fs patches for Mainline. Althouth the source code change between Legacy and Mainline is pretty trivial, preparing good and nice patches becomes a tedious task : - First, the original patch in Legacy contains tons of DOS file formatted (strange for a Linux driver, shame on Realtek) and even dos2unix failed on some files because of binaries character (probably Chinese), I had to edit many files because I wouldn't "signed-off" such ugly thing. (btw, maybe that dos2unix job should be done one Legacy to make it cleaner) - It is a quick big patch, but about the same size as the one in Legacy, about 10MB of text file. - Even after …

  9. Hello, guys, is this possible to choose a custom board-specific kernel config located in "userpatches" based on $BOARD variable? I am trying to customize different boards and I have no idea how to provide a specific config for, let's say, sun6i bananapi and sun8i orangepipc when I build "next" kernel, because all of them are covered by linux-sunxi-next.config. It seems like I need to change your scripts but I wouldn't like to.. Thanks.

It's been a while since I ran my VBox installed build system. apt-update gives the following error - Err:3 http://repo.aptly.info nightly InRelease The following signatures couldn't be verified because public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY ED75B5A4483DA07C but continues. Is there something I should do or ignore? I started from scratch and pulled the directory and ./compile'd again and everything seemed to go fine, produced output which I will test today.

  11. Please forgive the badly formatted post, I am a bit new here. I was trying to overclock my RockPro64 and ended up writing a device tree overlay (and a rather rudimentary one at that). wasn't sure how to contribute it so I am posting the code here instead. Please note, however, that up until yesterday, I had never written a device tree overlay, so this will not be in the correct format by any stretch of the imagination. I just figured I would post them here as a starting point for anyone who wishes to create a properly formatted dts file to contribute. I got the values that I used from this page on the pine64 wiki: https://wiki.pine64.o…

First, I'd like to say thank you for creating this. I have a Pine64 board and have built and loaded an Ubuntu Armbian build on the board. I'm now looking to develop custom software which will include a custom audio driver and custom audio software. I anticipate this means one or more custom kernel modules and custom user space software. I've read through all the documentation and will begin experimenting, but thought I'd check to see if somebody has created a cookbook style recipe for the following: 1. Kernel development: incrementally modifying the kernel, building and deploying on the test board. I can see deployment through the created .deb files, but…

A little bit OT, but what is the recommended way to sort a dts file? I commonly see patches, where maintainers keep requesting for nodes in a dts file to be sorted alphabetically, but didn't find any way to achieve this? I tired a simple `dtc -I dts -O dts -s xxx.dts` but the output contains symbols that I don't really need.

In recent weeks, I have been testing a new approach to using the source code for external WiFi modules (RTL). Previously, I regularly got build environment crash issues due to unpredictable source updates for EXTRAWIFI. These sources are scattered in different places and absolutely do not predictably change, breaking the kernel build. I'm tired of tracking such situations and regularly spending time creating emergency patches to restore the build process (or having to temporarily disable the EXTRAWIFI build). I compiled and placed all the sources in one controlled GIT. I still have them my GIT, but if your decide to switch to a new version of the build, it is advisable t…

  36. Hi, attached is a patch for U-Boot (should work on 2016.09-rc1 and 2016-09-rc2-dirty, will probably work on older ones as well) that makes it use the plain text file uEnv.txt instead of boot.scr, which has to be translated to a binary file first. This way changing the environment means only editing a text file, instead of editing a file, converting it to binary, and copying it over to the /boot partition on the SD. This becomes active if the U-Boot config has the option OLD_SUNXI_COMPAT disabled (in the menuconfig this is under ARM architecture -> Enable workarounds for booting old kernels). It also adds a small patch to board/sunxi/board.c to skip the setting …

I'm trying to use it on the clearfogpro though, which only runs up to kernel 4.19 right now (tried compiling 5.3 but it fails). So I wanted to backport the driver to 4.19. Unfortunately multiple things changed and trying to get the driver to compile broke lots of other stuff. So I came around to backports https://backports.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page their documentat…

Hi! I already successfully get mainline Armbian working on Pinebook (no sound - working on fix, and also suspend took much time to wake up), but, I don't like the way how I made it. Github repo: https://github.com/gamelaster/build/tree/pinebook-build I set the branch to "next", I set kernel repository to anarsoul's kernel (contains latest patches for A64 and also for Pinebook & Sopine devices) and deleted all patches from sunxi-next (all that patches has been for 4.14), I just kept and add some of patches. But this is probably terrible idea. @Igor or anyone, can you please me suggest better way to support "next" kernel (The task…

There was recently a discussion on an issue over on github dealing with an issue that popped up when building Armbian within a Docker container. Following on from there, it was decided that it would be a good idea to document the build process using Docker, and adding a howto, best practices, and FAQ to the main Armbian documentation. (I've put my hand up to coordinate this.) Using Docker is a good alternative to a VM, and particularly for anyone on macOS or Windows. So to kick off the thread, it'll be good just to discuss what should go into the docs. Also to see if anyone is interested in building with Docker and hasn't done so yet.

Hi, I've been trying to follow the instructions here https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_Using-Vagrant/ rather than using my current virtualbox setup however I fall over at the following spot: nick@Nick-desktop:~$ vagrant plugin install vagrant-disksize Installing the 'vagrant-disksize' plugin. This can take a few minutes... Bundler, the underlying system Vagrant uses to install plugins, reported an error. The error is shown below. Looking at this: https://github.com/armbian/build/commit/925b8592220a590b09215f08d3f06de6b8fe238d First, I would put most of the dependencies in "Recommends" and "Suggests" sections, otherwise people will be unable to remove non-essential packages they don't want. Second, I would put something like "nodm | lightdm" so you could switch the login manager without breaking things. And third, since we are discussing the desktop packages, personally I think that lightdm login dark theme looks relatively ugly (mostly you can't see element borders for user switcher dropdown menu, it's hard to read a dark font on a dark background, etc.) so mayb…

  59. After successfully building an image, I decided to build one for another board. Got a warning something like [warn] low disk space [5GB] I deleted the output directory and still states only 6 GB. I had given virtualbox 30 gb for this drive. What is the proper way to clean out the drive after a compile? Just ignore it, does it over write? Sorry if I missed this in the docs somewhere but I didn't find anything about it.

  60. Hello, everyone, I found a very serious issue with Armbian build framework: build may corrupt your host's rootfs! This has happened to my system 3 times: my rootfs has been totally destroyed without being able to recover it (I used a number tools, like testdisk, etc. All of the tools detected some deleted files but all of those files appeared to be 0-sized). I have delayed reporting this to be 100% sure that it is Armbian build that caused those issues. Now I am, absolutely, because such a problem NEVER happened to me before (I have been using Ubuntu 16.04 for a long time). After 2nd crash I changed my HDD to a brand new one and installed all again …

  61. I hope you can understand my question just from the title but here's more information in case you need it. BACKGROUND ON MY END GOAL IN CASE YOU HAVE ADVICE: I'm attempting to create a hardened linux image for running on my nanoPC-t4. I gotta give you guys props because Armbian appears to be wayyyyy ahead of the alternative distributions I checked out (gentoo/arch/lubuntu) in terms of support/customizability/documentation for ARM development. As a first step, I'm trying to build & boot a hardened Linux kernel. After some googling, I settled on this repo as my best option for free & open-source hardened kernel sources (unless anyone has a better suggestion)…

I have two build hosts, one was built week ago, one is Xenial, the other is Trusty. Since I added deboostrap to Trusty manually I also downgrade it to Trusty defaults but still ... Wheezy is somehow partially corrupted but it was O.K. few weeks ago. Any ideas what's going on ... before I start digging in?

Developer-Guide_Build-Preparation promises setup is easy following Vagrant tutorial. But the link does not lead to a working web page. I am preparing to try building my own Armbian image for Orangepi One.

  65. I have machines available at work, but I loose quite a big amount of time fighting with proxy issues. I also have VM available with proxy almost correctly configured (some protocols/ports don't work, like for adding gpg key), but the disks aren't big enough. At home, I have network without any proxy, but it's not that good... So, I was wondering if I could try and build Armbian on the cloud... for free. I tried several websites like google cloud and other services offering Docker, but I haven't found any with enough disk space. Is anyone of you building in the cloud? Thanks.

  66. Why armbian put debian.list to ubuntu package list (/etc/apt/sources.list/debian.list)? I am on ubuntu so I don't understand why should I have mix of debian and ubuntu packages

  67. This is really just a bash-centic question, but I'm baffled an tired of googling. Why does passing KEY=VALUE args to compile.sh work? I don't see bash flags, arg parsing or anything. I'm trying to do something similar in another script I'm just baffled. ex: sudo ./compile.sh EXPERT=yes EXTERNAL_NEW="compile" BOARD=orangepi-r1 BRANCH=next RELEASE="jessie" DESKTOP=no KERNEL_ONLY=yes KERNEL_CONFIGURE=no CLEAN_LEVEL=""

Release WIP and CSC images from their own page with very specific limitations, including, but not limited to: no kernel or u-boot updates, ideally with the kernel and u-boot package names modified with -unsupported- Explain these are demo snapshot images, potentially even package a different wallpaper that has -unofficial- or something similar watermarked across it. Maybe even use the default WM theme.

I am generally able to build whatever Armbian I want in an Ubuntu 16.04 Virtual Machine - though I dislike running linux virtual machines under Linux I have generally been about to build Armbian in and Ubuntu 16.04 LXC Container so long as I do not try to…

  70. As many of you know, lots of git repositories are automatically built every time there's a pull request, letting the project community know if that commit will introduce a flaw of some kind. If it's a help to Armbian, I'd like to configure a cloud-based build system that should be able to cut the "build all" time down to about 10% of what it is, and possibly to a number lower than that. Here's what I'd do. I'll use Google cloud's preemptible servers to spawn say 30 machines with the trigger being a pull request. If any of these macines dies during the build, it'll come back red. and otherwise, it will come back green and upload all of the binaries to google clou…

I added a while back 'free' output to 'armbianmonitor' and 'armhwinfo' to get some monitoring data from real-world installations about swap usage. Armbian uses an emergency swap file of 128MB by default (vm.swappiness=0) which means swapping should be avoided unless really needed. Let's have a look and extract data from +50 support URLs collected within the last months. I piped the output of https://pastebin.com/raw/DjxAX6Rn through while read ; do curl -q "${REPLY}" | grep '^Swap: '; done | sort | uniq -c and this is what we end with: 175 Swap: 127M 0B 127M 1 Swap: 127M 22M 105M 1 Swap: …
