Hello, I would like to share my experience about development and debugging inside Armbian. On the beginning I tried to use Code::Blocks. But it crashed too many times, mostly during simple file editing. Then I found better IDE - CodeLite. When I wanted to debug a program, I found I have to install GDB. After installing and configuring it, the debugging looked to be possible, but every attempt finished with segmentation fault somewhere outside of my program, even before the first statement in main function was reached. After several attempts, I uninstalled and re-installed GDB and this time found recommended additional component - libc6-dbg. Installing this component fixed…

Hello, Although Armbian is not the only one, most of the orange PI PC linuxes are not include XFS support so I had to go through a time consuming process to recompile the kernel by a guide which only works on Ubuntu 14.x (doh!): http://www.orangepi.org/Docs/Building.html Here is the kernel I made for the OrangePI boards, for those who miss the same thing: http://www.filedropper.com/orangepihwpacktar

Could some one advice or point to documentation for these tasks On some images the first boot is automatically restarted probably due to the filesystem expansion. I would like to do it myself or detetch some not yet done trigger file. Secondary avoid the forced account creation on first login. I have a bootstrap task which I start by using the external usb media which does all these things and starts my application install process. But to avoid the restarts and apt-get locks the plain image should not do things automatically... example on raspbian my process takes around 15minutes but installs all my required tools.

Hi, Where should I place a .patch in order to be taken into account on a next custom armbian built? This is for building legacy images. Need to have a modified nanopineo.fex and got a .patch for it, where should I place it in order to be applied on top of the armbian-provided one? P.S. Seen this -> https://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_User-Configurations/ but it only mentions u-boot and kernel.

I have searched all the forums, can't find a way to use compile.sh build a image with the kernel to be 4.9.0 version. Is there a variable some where to set this? the latest 4.9.4 and 4.9.3 are not working well for my nanopi or my orange zero. and yes, i went through all the docs, and tried I can. -jerry

Hi all, there is an issue with SPI on a Banana Pro (A20). I am on mainline kernel 4.5.5 now, but the problem already occurred on 3.4.109. SPI transfers are way to slow for my application, independently from the SPI clock. Investigating the SPI signals it turned out that there is an enormous delay between CS going active (low) and the transmission starting. The delay is in the magnitude of 10...20 usec which is a large multiple of the pure transmission time, so increasing the SPI clock does not solve the problem. The connected device is an SPI TFT display, so I have to send a large number of SPI words of 2 bytes each, where CS must toggle after each word (required by th…

I'm using an opi PC with a sandisk ultra 32GB micro SD. I've noticed that if you do a large write to the SD card (i.e. via samba) then the system becomes sluggish. Writing to a USB stick does not have the same effect on system performance. I tried changing the scheduler to CFQ (from noop) and it helped a lot. Has there been any testing on which scheduler is best? I assume noop performance will vary dependant on the SD controller? raspbian uses deadline as the default - https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=64702 Some very good info here: https://www.thomas-krenn.com/de/wiki/Linux_I/O_Scheduler

Hi guys! Thank you for your hardwork, we decided to use armbian as our development platform because it is great, well structured and documented! I think I am hitting a problem with u-boot compilation. I am running the compilation as follows: ./compile.sh KERNEL_ONLY=no BUILD_DESKTOP=yes BOARD=cubieboard BRANCH=default RELEASE=jessie PROGRESS_DISPLAY=plain CLEAN_LEVEL=make,cache,debs Then, after the sources are already downloaded, I get an error in the u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin target. This is my screen output: /usr/bin/env: «python»: No such file or directory Makefile:1090: recipe for target 'u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin' failed make: …

Hi This is my patches for using NAND + UBI + UBIFS with legacy kernel and latest u-boot Tested on Cubieboard-1 and Cubietruck. U-Boot: - read-only support for now - i.e. all write/erase ops are locked Kernel: - pooling events - need to convert to interrupts+completions ToDo: - make led support NAND layout - driver will create two MTD partitions: mtd0 - with name "SPL" - 1024K rounded up to eraseblock size. mtd1 - with name "UBI" - all other space excluding last 4 erseblocks - for bad block table. For using with u-boot need to create ubi volume named "boot" with id=0. This volume must contain /boot/* files. For other files I use in tests all …

Shall we start to finalise and prepare for images rebuild? Some new features were already documented, but there are some ongoing things and we are also preparing new download organisation, which could be included. - it looks like I manage to disable / merge little too much images, which needs to be built. @tkaiser was right I made a mistake, so please check .conf if I forgot something. - beta builds. we can't check all images, but some should be enough to assume everything is o.k. ... Do we have a minimum set yet? - I will try to enable beta testing protocol / call for testing within this build. What else should be included / finished and pushed into this buil…

First of all, happy 2017! May Armbian be the great OS it is, forever more. Now, I wanted to compile Armbian from scratch so I can see if I manage to hardcode some overscan into the tv module (it seems there's no way around it), but for some reason I can't seem to get the compilation going. I downloaded ubuntu, put it in a VM (so fresh, aside from VMWare guest tools) with 60GB storage, got it up to date, and tried to compile Armbian (since I don't know how to compile a single module). Steps taken: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install git git clone https://github.com/igorpecovnik/lib --depth 1 cp lib/compile.sh . sudo ./compile.sh Then "Ke…

I have Armbian Jessie running on a Orange Pi Lite board and the login script is showing the local loopback ip (127.0.0.1). It appears to be doing this because /etc/update-motd.d/30-sysinfo calls ifconfig -a and pulls the first ip, which in this particular case, is the local loopback. For the orangepi-lite, i wrote the following command in customize_image.sh and it fixes the problem in this case. sudo sed -i "s/ifconfig -a/ifconfig wlan0/g" /etc/update-motd.d/30-sysinfo It basically changes the script to pull the ip address from wlan0 instead of whatever one it finds first This could also be called from the command line for the same effect instead of during compilation.…

A great 9.30 min review here, pointing out the issues: Cooling, GPIO expansion, no MIPI, lack of SPI support in Armbian? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MzxLYGWQddA Apparently the much discussed Armbian cooling/Vreg techniques were not known to the author. Other stuff is interesting, with comparison to RPi.

So, Just installed Arbian Xenial mainline/stable on a 32Gb microSD on a Cubietruck. Everything seems to be working well except when I attach an external USB 3.0 1Tb disk. It seems to keep issuing some kind of ATA command to query the disk and cause a clicking. I know its not the disk because it works fine elsewhere and theres some info in the dmesg about it (which I will post when I get a chance). Is this a known bug or not? And if Im able to track down the bug and fix it where should I submit a PR? Thanks for the great project! - Zack

We would like to thanks all of those who participated in our small contest. Great submission! It was really hard to make a cherry pick, while the winner will be chosen by the vote. Since we only need one default wallpaper and that one must be as generic and clean as possible, this choice is as follows. Few others, which might come into action, had either too small text size, strange colors or were simply too busy. We might will add more than those five wallpapers to our desktop or use them as a boot splash. Vote will be online until 16.12. 1. Hello, Just returning after a little while, I cannot get ethernet working on my opi+2e with mainline kernel, direct cable connection to PC, no serial console at hand, neither HDMI output, so I had the habit of blindly booting then sshing into the box... I tried my personal config + megous repo, xenial or jessie, current armbian repo nothing coming out of eth on the PC (tcpdump -i eth0). LEDs, green solid on, red heartbeating, orange eth led blinking slowly. I then reverted back to montjoie's repo (default for dev BRANCH), for identical results. Could this be the updated u-boot (I think I saw a new version being used) ? Or is this expected to be…

Hi I think the subject I am interested in, called Kiosk OS or computer. I like to build a computer that when you turn it on, it does only execute one or some programs that I want. how can I do that? Is it a simple thing or should I spend weeks or months to learning and doing that? (I am a newbie linux user but know the C language). Very thank you in advanced!

I was using usb otg(microusb) as host mode in kernel 3.x. I was using this port to connect banana pi to touch&PWR in LCD. With kernel 3.x, there was no problem, but in the kernel 4.x the touch did not work. I was searching about the structure of usb port, and found out that to use micro usb as a host mode, the forth pin(sense) and the fifth pin(GND) should be connected. I checked this had been causing a touch problem by trying soldering the forth and the fifth pin of the usb otg port in banana pi, and the touch worked. Isn't there any way I can handle this situation in software-wise, not by soldering? I had also considered buying a microusb wire which has …

Hi all, since we're currently collecting tasks to be done by community to get a nice board (OPi Plus 2E) in return I thought I sum up where we currently are regarding working H3 OS images with mainline kernel: Our main showstoppers for releasing H3 images with mainline kernel are still: missing/non-working THS stuff (see explanation here), native Ethernet driver not finished and a few minor bits. My last attempt to check situation has been a few days ago. Since megi rebased his THS stuff (also containing the various USB and Ethernet patches) I chose his 4.6 branch to give it a try (see commit 224550b). Unfortunately I ran into kernel panics when testing on my …

Current main Armbian build hardware is a desktop based "server" running Ubuntu Xenial - i7 4790 / 16 / SSD. We already made lots's of optimisations within the build process but for 140 images I still need up to 14 hours where kernels were already cached. How is it possible to cut this time down significantly - to few hours, perhaps on a server grade hardware and further code optimisations? Currently I don't have access to any much better hardware to just run "build all" and see. I am looking for specific ideas for a build server upgrade and sponsored rent / exchange for advertisement. I was already advised by a friend, who knows something about server hardware: "J…

Hi folks, I've done a Armbian build for my OrangePi-Plus2e this morning, and discovered that U-Boot "fdtfile" is now set to sun8i-h3-orangepi-plus2e.dtb instead of sun8i-h3-orangepi-pc.dtb as previously. Unfortunately, the sun8i-h3-orangepi-plus2e.dtb doesn't exist, I had to copy the sun8i-h3-orangepi-pc.dtb under the sun8i-h3-orangepi-plus2e.dtb name to make it boot. Where in the build process we manage to set "fdtfile" during u-boot build ? Is that done using mix of manipulations of configs found in config/boards/orangepiplus2e.conf (Zador recently changed it) Also, on separate issue, I've discovered that /usr/lib/linux-u-boot-dev-orangepiplus2e_5.20_armhf…

Build today a new 5.23 jessie 3.4.112 (with rt143) for H3 (NanoPiNEO) Configured all wifi ok (8192cu) Later on, saw the indicated upgrade on 3 packages linux-headers-sun8i linux-image-sun8i tzdata First I installed the tzdata and all were still working ok. Hello, I'm building a device driver which controls gpio pins. Hello, I'm using armbian debian Jessie server, kernel 4.6.3 for banana pi m1+. Before, I built device driver with kernel 3.x and was working well, but decided to higher the kernel version because of SPI. (cpu isolation for the thread with SPI communication did not work in kernel 3.x) In the kernel 4.6.3, cpu isolation was working perfectly. When I used bcm2835 library, SPI also worked. However, when I tried to use the same device driver code in the kernel 4.6.3, it just crashed and froze. I had to turn it off and on again to use the pi again. After debugging, I found out that the point of the crash was the method gpio_direction_output(pinNumber, fal…

I just install the development enviroment to build custom images. Works pretty fine. Thanks to all of you. It makes it easy to test custom kernels on development boards. I went a step further, trying to use the userpatches/customize-image.sh script. Correct if i am wrong. It's possible to make a generic building process to add new drivers like the media_build does? I tried but the building fails because some variable references like the kernel version and driver modules path that the building script gets are from the host building machine and not the chroot guest. I suppose that inside this building image process there are some profile variables that could be reused. that…

Hi, not sure if this problem is related to Armbian, but in my case it occurs only on an Armian system. I have mainline kernel (4.7.x) running on a Banana Pro. wlan is configured as access point and works without any problems. eth0 is configured as client with static IP. The Banana is running 24/7, but the ethernet port is used only sporadically. The switch where eth0 is connected to is powered down most time. The problem is that eth0 forgets its IP configuration after a while, ifconfig then reports no IP address for eth0. I have to login via wlan and then ifdown/ifup eth0, then it works again. After a couple of hours (I dont know exactly how long), the IP is lost again. …

Starting to get into the armbian image a whole lot more as I prefer the lightweight nature of it over ubuntu mate on the ODroid C2. One issue I ran into today is the armbian kernel isn't built from the current hardkernel C2 kernel image: https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tree/odroidc2-3.14.y I'm trying to get the 3.5" LCD Shield running on there, naturally it works fine on ubuntu mate C2 image but the kernel used for the armbian build is a different fork. The specific fbtft customised version for the C2 sits under the kernel here: https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/blob/odroidc2-3.14.y/drivers/video/fbtft/flexfb.c I'm happy to rebuild the kernel fro…

Maybe there are already rules for how it should be arranged for Armbian.

Hi there, I have now finally managed to apply the RT Kernel patch on the Bananapi. (Original Patch here: https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/3.4/patch-3.4.108-rt136.patch.gz) The patch did not work out of the box and I had a bit of hassle to fix all of the rejected bits. To me the Banana Pi is best suited for audio production since it is very affoedable and it already comes with a usable audio out. To get the full benefit of the RT kernel patch it was necessary to thrn also reduce the buffer size of the inbuilt sunxi -codec audio driver. I can now play a synth using a buffer size of 512 samples glitch free. Here are some numbers: ansum@ba…

Hi all, I'am looking at creating a single unified H3 DietPi image (currently using ARMbian build tools), rather than one for each board. Would allow us to support all H3 devices, reduce work load and simplify DietPi source code. Basically I need to know if its possible, and which unique files/configurations would need changing to achieve it. The end goal: The user would download the H3 image, modify it for their board (eg: copy and paste job on /boot), prior to powering on. Some questions: Is script.bin the only unique configuration across all H3 boards? Aside from any additional linux stuff, like hardware items (eg: + onboard BT/WiFi) Does /usr/lib/linux-u…

[Ended] Be active, creative, helpful and you can get a powerful board in return. First give away batch is starting 11.6.2016 It's not often that you can work on a software project that actually brings joy and helps people. Armbian is one of those project. It is a system that helps one build a kernel or boot images for several ARM development boards. It's in common interest that we improve level of support and to relieve most active people. Our crew needs an upgrade: we need more coders, kernel hackers, UX designers to find and solve problems. If you are one of them, join our forum, join project at Github. we need properly built, packed and supported desktop wit…

Hey, I compiled and installed the latest kernel (4.7.3 and uboot 2016-09) but something went wrong. The dtb file was missing. while a manually correct the missing dtb from another run a flashed uboot in the wrong way. Instead of using the drive /dev/sdc I used the partition /dev/sdc1. I read this: https://linux-sunxi.org/Bootable_SD_card#SD_Card_Layoutand with these two commands I should have erased the first 1Mb dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=1k count=1023 seek=1 dd if=u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin of=/dev/sdc1 bs=1024 seek=8 (Luckily there is no backup at all ) gpart gives me this: gpart -vg /mnt/veracrypt1/Armbian_5.14_Cubietruck_Debian_jessie_4.6.2.raw de…

I found an old bug report on the same version of wicd that is delivered with the legacy builds. Try to authenticate WPA for wifi, get bad password error. Repeated attempts to authenticate as many as 10 times before it is successful. It will finally succeed, therefore; the password is not bad. https://bugs.launchpad.net/wicd/+bug/1084380 A short summary includes, there seems to be a problem in the wpa_supplicant that causes it to occasionally take too long to return from an authentication request. wicd rev 1.7.2 is set to wait 35 seconds then times out and reports BAD PASSWORD, when it should have reported a timeout. The suggested fix was to allow user config for …

Hi, U-boot reads my SD card with a speed of less then 1 MB/s. This is the log from extraPutty for my kernel image: [30:208][35:648] 5025176 bytes read in 5389 ms (910.2 KiB/s) I find similar results from other people. When I read the same file in a shell with dd I get a speed of 20 MB/s. Hi, I have a OPi lite board and the U-boot model name shows Orange Pi One. Reason: It's patched as a "one" in u-boot-99-add-missing-boards.patch. I copied this file to the userpatches/u-boot/u-boot-dev directory and made some changes so it refered to the sun8i-h3-orangepi-lite.dts I created. (According to the user provided patches section) This didn't do the trick because it didn't override the original patch. No change and the patching log shows that the original patch is applied. So obviously I did something wrong but I have no idea what. What I would like to achive is that I can control the green led on my board. (Pin PL10, signal name PWR-LED, signal name LED1 an…

From time to time I searched for a somewhat precise power meter that produces not only a simple visual output but data that can be integrated into a monitoring system (be it RPi-Monitor, SNMP or something else). The ODROID Smart Power looked somewhat promising but was rather expensive and seems to be sold out in the meantime. Zador told me some time ago some details about different ADC measurements with Lime2, I checked this some days ago when combining Lime2 with a H3 board and am now thinking about simply using a Banana Pro to be used as such a power meter since I'm currently preparing measurements of a few H3 boards to arrive soon (see for some preparations this th…

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my Cubietruck that I was able to partly debug now, but I really like to have input from those who know more about this setup. On my Cubietruck (trusty, kernel 4.6.5-sunxi), I have a 120GB SSD (no-name brand) and added an ext4 partition and corresponding fstab line to mount it. Booting and mounting this partition works well when I cold start my system, and had powered it off before for a while. But when I do a warm start (sudo reboot), the system hangs on boot, quite reliably (it seems to occasionally work, though). I changed my kernel command line and added 'init=/bin/sh', started a 2nd bash terminal before replacing …

Those past days, I was working on getting DT ConfigFS Overlays into sun8i-dev. Today, I've suddenly saw that the version from that we are using from https://github.com/megous/linux(branch orange-pi-4.6) change from 4.6.2 to 4.6.4. I didn't care much until I figured out that we loose all the UART1/2/3/4 (only keeping the debug UART0) as well as all I2C (except the one on r_pio for PMIC). So, "megous" github is back to almost what linux-sunxi github is providing, without all the patches for UART/I2C that I had prepared 3 months ago. I get I will have to re-integrate them on our side until there merge into real linxx-sunxi branch.

I'm using banana pi M1 plus and armbian legacy kernel. I was also able to get the data, but I want to deal with the error message so that I can prevent any future problem. It seems that the error is caused because the ttyS0 is sending some console messages. I've found some articles about getting rid of console output from ttyS0. Most of them said to modify …

Hallo, the Armbian Debian jessie dhclient does not handle a served hostname reliable. Deleting /etc/hostname (or replacing it with an empty file) and setting the hostname option at the DHCP Server doesn't always work. In some cases the Armbian client still has its default name 'bananapim2'. http://blog.schlomo.schapiro.org/2013/11/setting-hostname-from-dhcp-in-debian.html describes the problem, a cause and a solution. I can confirm the problem with the leases file. Following step 2 works for me. It would be really fine if the unset_old_hostname file could be added to Armbian by default. Kind regards, Steve

When ./compile.sh command is used to compiling a new Armbian version (especially with some source changes for debugging), in case there was an error during compilation, it can be impossible to find real reason of the problem. Log files located in output/debug folder are not very informative - they just show the last message, which also appears on the screen - failed in script line number . The following command was used to get full log of the compilation process: command | tee -a log.txt Hope this will be useful for somebody else (newbie), who like me spent a lot of time trying to understand, why the compilation failed after some changes in kernel configuration.

Hi, I managed to compile a working 4.6.2 Linux kernel for my Allwinner H3 powered Orange Pi PC using the Armbian lib build scripts.
