I was chatting with @tido about ways to help the Armbian community and I came up with the idea of a common C library to access the I2C, SPI and GPIOs of all supported boards. There are of course kernel drivers to communicate with these things, but there are differences between boards that this API could help smooth out. For example, different CPUs (and boards) map the GPIO pins very differently. Projects such as WiringOP and WiringNP try to copy the Raspberry Pi library, but this is also flawed because it's based on the BCM283x GPIO numbering. What I propose is to create a set of simple functions for accessing GPIO pins using the physical pin number as a reference. On all…

Edit: User Space IO depracated. Use Java Periphery instead https://github.com/sgjava/java-periphery https://github.com/sgjava/userspaceio After a lot of work and testing I have produced the User Space IO project! It provides Python 3 and Java 8 bindings for Linux user space GPIO, SPI, I2C, PWM and Serial interfaces. This allows cross SBC and cross language development using a common API. I took two best of breed C APIs for Linux user space libgpiod and c-periphery and produced CFFI bindings for Python and JNA bindings for Java. Since all the bindings closely match the C API it's easy to move from language to language. The side effect of using the J…

The pyA20 gpio library is quite famous when people start to play with gpios , spi or i2c on sunxi boards but mapping needs often adjustments to work on your own board. This situation is not really friendly for 'beginners'. pyGPIO should help to make armbian a little bit more 'IoT friendly'. I didn't touch the 'backbone' of pyA20, so the syntax should be similar to its original (except pinname when using port instead of connector). How can I use this library: Cause all of this boards have (more or less) the same pinheader (sometimes other pins are deployed on the pinheader) pyGPIO tries to unify the mappings, so that code can be shared and deployed …

Overview (Disclaimer: The following is for techies only that like to dig a bit deeper. And if you're not interested in energy-efficient servers then probably this is just a waste of time ) EDIT: Half a year after this poorly designed SBC has been released just one of the many design flaws has been fixed: Micro USB for DC-IN has been replaced by the barrel jack that was present on the pre-production batches. If you were unfortunate to get a Micro USB equipped M3 please have a look here how to fix this. Apart from that check the Banana forums what to expect regarding software/support first since this is your only source) Sin…

Hello, this quick tutorial is to introduce an experimental Debian and Ubuntu APT repository to install ffmpeg compiled with v4l2request and v4l2drmprime patches developed by Linux kernel, LIbreELEC and Kodi folks to allow hardware video decoding on stateless decoders like those implemented in Rockchip and Allwinner SoCs for h.264, h.265, vp8 and vp9 codecs. The repository introduces a new ffmpeg package that integrates and substitues the base ffmpeg package and its related packages. Preconditions: Mainline kernel 6.1 or more recent armhf or arm64 architecture Supported distributions: Debian 12 - Bookworm …

Hello everyone! Is there anyone who tried to run Docker on armbian? Ok, let's start from the beginning: I am from the Hypriot Team (we made Docker available on ARM) and recently saw some guys successfully playing with Docker on armbian. Meanwhile, we know, that our Docker runs at least on the Cubietrack and Lamobo R1/BananaPi R1 on top of armbian! This is awesome because, you know, IoT is coming, and Docker on ARM helps get a grip on many challenges induced by IoT. However, we were only able to support Docker on Raspberry Pis so far... Imagine if Docker would run on more than just a few ARM boards! Armbian seems an awesome platform to …

This little and inexpensive ($35) board is fully compatible to discontinued NanoPi M3. From a software point of view both boards are identical (though Wi-Fi is missing on the Fire3) and as such identical OS images can be used for both boards. The good news: compared to the last time I looked at the M3 kernel support has improved a lot. Back then we had to run a smelly 3.4.39 (32-bit only) while we can now run mainline on it. I gave it a try using our Armbian Stretch nightly running with 4.14.40 (full armbianmonitor -u output) and did a couple of tests. The Samsung/Nexell S5P6818 SoC consists of 8 A53 cores running at up to 1.4GHz with default settings (can be …

Another look at another SBC: The Orange Pi PC from Shenzen based Xunlong. The company claims to have done the original ODM work for Banana Pi as Foxconn contractor and started with 2 'Orange Pi' models based on the same A20 SoC shortly thereafter: 'Orange Pi' and 'Orange Pi Mini' -- both supported by Armbian from the beginning. Then they released the 'Orange Pi Plus' based on a newer Allwinner SoC: the H3 (quad-core Cortex-A7 running at 1.2GHz). This SoC is intended for dirt-cheap OTT boxes, is equipped with 4 independent USB 2.0 PHYs and also an integrated 100 Mbits/sec Ethernet PHY (but can still provide GBit Ethernet using an external PHY like RTL8211 as Xunlong i…

Warning: This whole thread is only about historical information now since it's 2018 and we can buy inexpensive and great performing A1 rated SD cards in the meantime. Buying anything else is a mistake so directly jump to the end of the thread for performance numbers and recommendations. Edit: See an early 2017 update at the end of the thread regarding new SD specs also covering random IO performance. Edit 2: Some thoughts/observations on lifespan/reliability of SBC storage: http://tech.scargill.net/a-question-of-lifespan/ (see also/especially the comments there) Edit 3: CNX Software picked up recent performance reports (eg…

tkaiser has built a new Kernel with i2s Modules. With this Kernel and some cheap DAC e.g. (http://www.ebay.de/itm/Audiophonics-I2S-DAC-ES9023-Sabre-to-Analog-24bit-192KHZ-fur-Raspberry-PI-/291573327639?hash=item43e31fe717:g:TTwAAOSw~OdVZXtm) it is possible to get good quality sound out of the Orange Pis. After installing the Kernel Two Things have to be changed in the fex File: Change Directory to boot: cd /boot Turn the script.bin to a fex-File and open it in an Editor sudo bin2fex script.bin script.fex sudo nano script.fex Now change the following Entries: [twi1] twi_used = 1 to [twi1] twi_used = 0 and [pcm0] daudi…

I've been doing some tests with NanoPi M4 these days. While I'm not a professional board reviewer, here I can share some early performance numbers to you. Beware that none of these tests fit into real world use cases, they are just provided as-is. Besides, Armbian development on RK3399 boards are still at a very early stage, so any of these numbers may change in the future, due to software changes. Unless mentioned, all tests are done using Armbian nightly image, FriendlyARM 4.4 kernel, CPU clocked at 2.0/1.5GHz Powering NanoPi M4 is my first board powered by USB-C, while RK3399 is not power-hungry under normal load, I do doubt if 5V/3A power supply …

Clearfog PRO with R1 in the back After a day of playing, I am running full featured Armbian, Debian Wheezy, built with Armbian script from sources. We had to fix few things in U-boot and upgraded kernel to .82 but generally it was easy to boot the board. Of course SolidRun also provide some basic images. Three(3) phys, USB and PCI is detected in kernel 3.10.82 - I don't have much hardware to plug in so I can't do much tests at this point. There is no CPU governor (yet?), so I assume it's running full speed (1.6Ghz) all the time. There are dip switches on the board to set cpu / dram speed ... ____ _ __ / ___| | ___ __ _ _ __ / _|…

ODROID HC1 Mini Review ODROID XU4 is one of the most powerful boards Armbian supports (due to being a big.LITTLE design with 4 x A15@2GHz and 4 x A7@1.4GHz). Though the SoC is a bit old performance is still impressive, the SoC features 2 independent USB3 ports (on XU3/XU4 one is connected to an USB Gigabit Ethernet chip, the other to an internal USB3 hub providing 2 USB3 receptacles) but in the past many users had troubles with USB3 due to cable/connector problems (the USB3-A receptacle specification/design is a total fail IMO, unfortunately we've still not USB-C everywhere) underpowering problems with Hardkernel's Cloudshell 1 or XU4 powere…

Full root filesystem encryption on an Armbian system (new, fully rewritten, replaces my earlier tutorial on this topic) MMGen (https://github.com/mmgen) This tutorial provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for setting up full root filesystem encryption on an Armbian system. The disk can be unlocked remotely via SSH or the serial console, permitting unattended bootup. An automated script that performs the same steps, saving you much time and effort, can be found at https://github.com/mmgen/mmgen-geek-tools Note that unlike my earlier tutorial all steps are performed within a running Armbian system. Overview: SinoVoip sent me a few days ago a review sample of their new Banana Pi M2+. It's based on Allwinner's H3 SoC and tries very hard to be a 99% clone of Orange Pi Plus/PC. SinoVoip chose to stay compatible to nearly all pin mappings therefore any OS image that works on Orange Pi Plus will also work on BPi M2+ but some things need adjustments. BPi M2+ features GBit Ethernet, eMMC, 2 USB host ports and one USB OTG that do not have to share bandwidth (no internal USB hub used and H3's 3rd USB host port unused unfortunately), Ampak AP6212 to provide WiFI/BT, fortunately no crappy USB-to-SATA bridge, a CSI interface to be used together with an OV…

The following is a short overview what you can expect from small and big H3 devices when used as a NAS. I chose the least capable device (OPi Lite for $12: not even Ethernet and just 512MB DRAM) and the best possible (OPi Plus 2E for $35: GBit Ethernet, 3 USB host ports exposed that do not have to share bandwidth, 2GB DRAM). I wanted to test also a H3 device in between with 1GB DRAM but since results are somewhat predictable I dropped the whole idea (the performance bottleneck on all Fast Ethernet equipped devices will be network unless you add the $7.50 for an USB-Ethernet dongle -- see below -- and all other Gbit Ethernet capable H3 devices are not…

Relax - Wireless is solved for OPI ONE There seems to be a lot of confusion and missing information on how to access the dirt cheap OPI ONE wirelessly and the steps necessary to successfully use cheap Realtek USB dongles ( 8188cus, 8188eu ) with Armbian_5.10. This is a short summary of the needed materials and steps to turn your OPI ONE into a wireless client or wireless AP. There are NO custom kernels, custom modules or anything else needed, we are using stock Armbian_5.10 with stock kernel, stock modules and stock software to configure wireless access for select tested and working Realtek wifi dongles. Orange Pi One PCB is designed to easy add almost all removed features from Orange Pi PC. Currently only RAM expansion is unprofitable. To add 2 removed USB ports just solder wires to solder points as shown below on the photo: Data lines for USB #3: points 1,2 Data lines for USB #2: points 3,4 Power can be taken directly from GPIO header or DC socket. OPiOne has no separate voltage regulators for USB ports like previous boards used to have. This way I want to solder mini WiFi dongle (after removing the case and USB port) directly to the PCB.

Hi, I've been running Octoprint on armbian for several months with good results of a couple of printers with good performance no relevant problems. Installation process is not complex but I decided to build a simple a plug&play meta-distribution like OctoPi for Rpi boards but based on armbian so it can be used potentially in any of the supported boards. I started with the popular Opi Zero as it is really cheap and the four cores of the H2+ processor handle perfectly a 3d printer load and is 3 times cheaper than a typical RPI3B that octoPi requires. You can find it here: https://github.com/ludiazv/octocitrico Built-in features are: …

As already done with other topics this will be the start of a new thread collecting more information over time. Since we had a lot of annoying discussions recently regarding Wi-Fi on Orange Pi Zero and in general I thought let's give it a try a few days ago. I did some preparations in the meantime (monitoring 24/7 Wi-Fi throughput in 2.4 GHz band for example) and then started to test in a not too crowded environment here. As a start some quick Wi-Fi tests with a random 'quality' USB Wi-Fi dongle and 3 different Wi-Fi chipsets that can be found an a few boards Armbian supports: RTL8192CU (used on a lot of cheap USB dongles and even on …

UPDATE: You'll find a preliminary performance overview at the end of the thread. Click here. This is NOT an ODROID N1 review since it's way too early for this and the following will focus on just a very small amount of use cases the board might be used for: server stuff and everything that focuses on network, IO and internal limitations. If you want the hype instead better join Hardkernel's vendor community over there: https://forum.odroid.com/viewforum.php?f=148 All numbers you find below are PRELIMINARY since it's way too early to benchmark this board. This is just the try to get some baseline numbers to better understand for which use cas…

The Orange Pi One is the most recent SBC from Xunlong. It's clearly the Orange Pi PC's little sibling. In case you haven't read the PC's review already maybe it's time to do it now since here only important differences will be shown. Since it's based on an Allwinner SoC (system on chip) please keep in mind that you will always find the most comprehensive and up-to-date information in the linux-sunxi wiki: http://linux-sunxi.org/Orange_Pi_One The most important differences between One and PC as follows: Smaller size: the PC used the RPi form factor (85mm x 55mm) while the One is just 69mm x 48mm in size 512MiB instead of 1GiB DRAM (still two DDR3L modules making u…

The following is the start of a series of tests regarding minimized consumption mode for SBCs. Idea behind is to provide Armbian settings that allow some of the SBC we support to be used as cheap and low-power IoT nodes (or call it 'home automation' or anything else, at least it's about low-power and headless useage) I start with some consumption comparisons with various RPi models below just to get a baseline of numbers and to verify that my consumption monitoring setup is ok. Also you find a lot of numbers on the net that are questionable (measured with inappropriate equipment, comparing OS images with different settings, taking cable resistance not into acco…

Since I've seen some really weird disk/IO benchmarks made on SBCs the last days and both a new SBC and a new SSD arrived in the meantime I thought let's give it a try with a slightly better test setup. I tested with 4 different SoC/SBC: NanoPi M3 with an octa-core S5P6818 Samsung/Nexell SoC, ODROID-C2 featuring a quad-core Amlogic S905, Orange Pi PC with a quad-core Allwinner H3 and an old Banana Pi Pro with a dual-core A20. The device considered the slowest (dual-core A20 with just 960 MHz clockspeed) is the fastest in reality when it's about disk IO. Since most if not all storage 'benchmarks' for SBC moronically focus on sequential transfer speeds o…

Anyone ever dealt with OpenMediaVault (OMV) on SBC? Great piece of software but pretty slow, right? One of the many reasons why that happened are outdated crappy kernels and bad settings. I looked at an OMV image for A20 based boards like Banana Pi Pro recently, ended up here http://simplenas.com/download/bananas-simple-system and simply thought: Are you kidding me? Your stable release is based on horribly outdated Debian Wheezy, a kernel 3.4.something and a 2.x OMV release?! What a mess... Igor had an OMV install routine since a long time in his Debian-micro-home-server post-processing script but since an Armbian user evaluated using Armbian's build system to…

UPDATE 11-FEB-2017: Version 2.2.0 is released: now including video recording in stead of only images and also a privacy option to black out areas that may not be filmed. UPDATE 09-FEB-2017: Version 2.2.1 is released: memory leak(s) fixed and in some cases video stopped recording. This should be fixed now. Download via this page. This falls somewhere between "how-to", "research", and "development", so I stuck it here. @adafruit is working to target CircuitPython to Armbian devices, something that will be a bit of a task. I've been playing with the code to get it working on my Tritium H3, finally did (some extra sudo-ing was needed), so I'll probably toss in a couple board definitions/help here and there if I can. it had hijacked a C2 thread (not completely, it was at least about using it on the C2), and I thought it best to continue discussion here. @chwe, @sgjava, and @Larry Bank all have various experience with various GPIO tools, their interest may vary. My current observations,…

The above thing is a $10 accessory that can be ordered together with ROCK64 (and maybe other Pine Inc. devices like Pine64 or Pinebook?). It's an USB-to-SATA bridge (JMicron JMS578 based) to be used together with 2.5" SSD/HDD or 3.5" HDD. For the latter purpose it's equipped with a separate power jack suitable for the usual 12V 5.5/2.1mm power barrels (centre positive) you find PSUs with literally everywhere. TL;DR: If you want to add storage to your ROCK64 order this cable too. It works great with both 2.5" and 3.5" disks and it's somewhat sad it's not available separately since it's a great storage companion for many other devices too. Basics fir…

Note: Guide Updated May 2017, as I realise that /dev/input/event3 may not always be the IR receiver device on your armbian installation. Hi All, I recently bought an Orange PI PC and the best thing I ever did was install Armbian straight away (and donate). Now that I have a bit of spare time, I wanted to configure my Orange PI PC to do something ridiculous like play Rick Ashley 'Never going to give you up' upon pressing the 'red button' on some generic Chinese IR remote for an LED light strip I have in my living room. Thanks to Armbian, most of the pieces are in place (such as the SunXI IR package) with the distribution, you just need t…

Panfrost instructions Armbian !!!! I made a script that does all this, check a few posts later for the script !!!!! This tutorial explains how to build an Armbian image with panfrost. And what else you need to make it work. These are early drivers. Many things don't work yet. Only OpenGL 2.1 works now. You need to build an image with kernel 5.2 or later. For this you need an x86 pc with Ubuntu 18.04 or a virtual Ubuntu 18.04 x86 image. First install git, then clone the build folder from Armbian, and enter the build directory. apt-get -y -qq install git git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/armbian/build cd bu…

[update 12/2017 at bottom] Possibly late, but I would like to put everything we know in one place for anyone who might think of buying this board. Overview: This is a form factor and (mostly) I/O clone of the Raspberry Pi 3 with a much more powerful quad-core Cortex-A17 Rockchip rk3288. It supports HDMI 2.0, has 2 GB RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, Wifi and BT on board, etc: https://www.asus.com/us/Single-Board-Computer/Tinker-Board/ As numerous other sites have covered all the typical performance metrics and extolled the power and so forth of this board, I'm going to go ahead and give you the less exciting information a…

Hi there, I have a RockPi 4b running Arabian with Ubuntu bionic. I mainly use the board to contact it online over ssh/vnc/rdp to work in spyder and texmaker. Quite often the connection is slow however. Therefore I am thinking of changing the system such that i can just bring it on the road and connect it using a local network with the usbc cable outlet of the iPad and a USB port on the rockpi. The reason i would like to connect over a cable is speed and not having to use the WiFi so that both devices can still easily connect to a WiFi network for internet access. I have found many solutions where iPads are connected to raspberry pi’s. These solutions all have …

I'm going to use an orange Pi zero to make a thermostat adjustable via lan; do you know how to point me to some easy to apply project? I tried several projects, with ds1820b sensors and relais card for raspberry, but I have problems for example with the libraries RPi.GPIO because they do not match those OPi.GPIO. I can currently turn the relays on and off with an android app or via terminal command.

Is not important, and is a topic related to desktop environment and I know that armbian is more a server OS than a dektop replacement ... but I'm stuck trying to have all the environment in my mother language, Spanish. I change locale in root user and in the additionally created desktop user, I use dpkg-reconfigure locales locales and also export LANGUAGE=es_ES.UTF-8 but after reboot is again in English. And also when I update and upgrade the system I can see Translation-en logs but never a Translation-es. Is there any chance to do a better localization of the Desktop Environment? Thanks.

The above is a so called 'Banana Pi M2 Berry' I bought yesterday and will return today to get my money back (due to 'Irreführende Werbung' / false advertising) showing most probably the use case this device will be bought by clueless people: To connect a SATA 2.5" disk to it since 'native SATA'. Of course this doesn't work as expected since the board's power design is an absolute fail. The manufacturer already knows what a shit show using Micro USB for DC-IN is. I simply used the same average USB cable I used to demonstrate the problem a few years ago with the original Banana Pi. With an average USB cable the disk does not even spin up but only produces ugly n…

Latest RK3399 arrival in the lab. For now just some q&d photographs: @wtarreau my first 96boards thing so far (just like you I felt the standard being directed towards nowhere given that there's no Ethernet). And guess what: 2 x Ethernet here! A quick preliminary specifications list: RK3399 (performing identical to any other RK3399 thingy out there as long as no throttling happens) 2 GB DDR3 RAM (in April Vamrs said they will provide 1GB, 2GB and 4GB variants for $99, $129 and $149) Board size is the standard 160×120 mm 96Boards EE form factor. It's simple guide, presenting how to setup LCD (ili9431) with integrated touchscreen (tsc2046) on mainline kernel (4.11). It may be not fully "armbian way", since I'm pretty new in armbian In case that somebody is interested, I recently bought couple those displays from here Few basic informations: 1. OrangePiZero has two SPI buses. First one is usually occupied by build in memory. So we can only use bus1 2. tsc2046 chip is fully compatible with ads7846, and we have drivers for it since years now 3. Maximum clock frequency for ads7846 is 3.25Mhz, but don't expect that it will work with that. Reasonable value is something beet…

!! DEPRECATED !! Instructions in this thread are oudated and superseded by the new experimental APT repository for hardware video decoding ffmpeg. Please refer to this thread from now on! Hello, recent upgrades to armbian are regarding kernel 5.15. I noticed that many v4l2 fixes and enhancements went into this release, so I decided to compile ffmpeg using LibreELEC patched version and mpv over it. mpv turns out to be statically linked with ffmpeg, so I propose it here for people who is interested in cutting edge kernel and wants to do some tests. This has been tested on Debian Bullseye and Ubuntu Hirsute on following platforms:…

Access to a console can be mandatory when you SBC doesn't work as expected (e.g Network or HDMI output doesn't work). When SSH/Display access isn't possible access to console via UART is the best way to get a clue where your SBC hangs. This short tutorial should give you an introduction how this works. For some boards, armbian implements an USB gadget mode (a 'fake' serial console over microUSB) describen below. As a reminder an USB-UART bridge is always prefered over USB gadget mode whenever possible (UART get's initialized before the gadget driver and also before HDMI, means even if you don't get a proper output from HDMI or gadget mode console, it is possible that UART…

Hi All, After I accomplished my IR Red Key Rick Rolling experiment the other day with much success, and from general end-luser use with Armbian, there were two things which irritated me, which are namely due to the default ALSA configuration that comes with stock Debian and that Armbian inherits. These were: Update: 11 September 2017. This guide will not work for newer Armbiam (Debian) installations which comes with Pulseaudio by default. If you really want what this tutorial provides, you will need to uninstall pulseaudio first: sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio 1) You can't have simultaneous applications using an Audio device. So, how ab…

EDIT: Solution in next post (this started as a question; yeah maybe I should have split it, but whatever). Apologies if this is dumb question. I finally got my hands on some appropriate (64-bit) hardware, and ready to install software now. I have read so many threads (in Kobol Club and elsewhere), Issues (at GitHub as well as Atlassian) and I think this is solved by now (on Armbian) but cannot confirm? Official install instructions (on OpenZFS website) don't really seem applicable to Armbian (kernel headers will be different, etc.). I guess what I am asking is, do I just do something like the following: $ sudo ap…

Hi all. I again had the pleasure of working with an amazing server. This time the AMD Threadripper 3990X, 64-cores and 128 threads. After last week working on a 32-core ARM server I thought I had seen performance. This is again not comparable with anything before. I again got private SSH access. So I opened 3 terminals. One with HTop, another to check sensors. And the 3th to execute my benchmarks. First thing I saw were the 128-threads. Being used to seeing 6, this was almost unbelievable. Spoiler With light loads it turbo's up to 4.3Ghz. All cores maxed out @ 3Ghz while consuming 400W. Reaching a single core 7zip…

TL;DR: All available H3 boards do not differ that much. But the few differences sometimes really matter! The following is an attempt to compare the different available H3 SBC that are supported by Armbian. The majority of boards is made by Xunlong but in the meantime two more vendors started cloning the Xunlong boards (and also Olimex is preparing H3 boards as OSHW). Both Foxconn/SinoVoip with their Banana Pi M2+ and FriendlyARM with their NanoPi M1 tried really hard to copy everything as exact as possible (the so called pin mappings -- how the many contacts the used H3 SoC is providing are routed to the outside). All the boards share the same 40 pi…

I wanted an as light as possible desktop environment so I'd have enough ram left to do video rendering with the NanoPi M4(2GB) I had to try a lot of things to get things working fine. With NODM installed I had problems, so I also removed NODM. To be sure lxdm is configured right, I also manually configure it. sudo apt install lxdm sudo apt remove nodm sudo dpkg-reconfi…

With this commit I added 7-zip benchmark reporting to Armbian now. Will be available after next updates and with next batch of new images. Why not recommending to just do an 'apt install p7zip ; 7zr b'? Since 'fire and forget' benchmarking is always BS. You need some monitoring in parallel to know whether your system was really idle and at which clockspeeds the CPU cores were operating (throttling occuring or not?). Most recent 7-zip contains an own routine to 'pre-heat' the system prior to starting the benchmark (to let cpufreq scaling switch from low clockspeeds to highest ones and e.g. on Intel systems let the system enter TurboBoost modes). Th…

This is some more research based on prior efforts. The goal is to make more efficient use of available RAM. If the system runs low on memory only two options are possible: either the kernel invokes the oom-killer to quit tasks to free memory (oom --> out of memory) or starting to swap. Swap is a problem if it happens on slow media. 'Slow' media usually describes the situation on SBC. 'Average' SD cards (not A1 rated) are slow as hell when it's about random IO performance. So swapping is usually something that should be avoided. But... technology improves over time. In Linux we're able to swap not only to physical storage but since a …

I am releasing this patch in the hope of you may find it useful. I have also included a sample dts file. It seems to work in 48mhz quite well with very few SPI errors. (Note that the pieces of the driver has been around for some time but I have never seen it put together without further work. Hopefully this patch would make it readily usable. I have tested it on 5.5.18 and quite happy with it.) 0001-fbtft-fb_ili9488.patch 1_ili9488.dts Sample file is for nanopi neo. Driver also works with 4 inch LCD, MSP4020, MSP4021

Hi there, this very short tutorial is a solution when you need to backup/clone/save as small *.img file as possible of your whole fully bootable system (e.g. you have 8GB card but you want to make smaller system image for 2GB card). And another reason why I created this tutorial - I need to burn the same image to many microsd cards. I am using Windows (yup, hate me know) and Debian in these steps: Put your microsd card to Windows machine and make image of card with Win32diskimager. If your card is e.g. 8GB, you get *.img file with the same size (my name backup.img). Now in linux maxine (in my case Debian virtual machine) we are going to work with…

As a result of all the work that Armbian developers put into the upgrade to kernel 4.14 for the XU4 board family, now we can enjoy many new features. One of them is the access to the SoC video encoding capabilities. Emby Media Server can take advantage of the Exynos 5422 MFC video engine for transcoding. That means lower CPU usage, lower temperatures, and the possibility of encoding in real time higher resolutions or more simultaneous streams. In my tests, I've been able to transcode one HEVC 1080p and one 480p at the same time, or five 480p (though it will depend on the bitrate of the source material). However, the ffmpeg version shipped with offi…

Java UIO provides high performance Java interfaces for Linux Userspace IO. Java UIO was built from the ground up to use modern kernel APIs, libraries and code generation techniques to provide a best of breed cross platform approach. It does not make sense to recreate the wheel like so many other IO libraries. JDK 17 LTS is supported out of the box. I've been committing code to U8g2 that utilizes the same userspace code at the C level and dramatically improved the performance of HW/SW SPI and I2C in the arm-linux port. I also made the arm-linux port thread safe and multi display capable (you can use this in C as well obviously). It made sense to add modularizat…

Thanks to ASUS, I got my hands on one of these after seeing what appeared to be a giant heat sink fin integrated into the top of the case. This case may be of interest to non-Tinker owners as well, it is not designed like the equivalent Pi cases with a fixed aluminum stud touching the SoC. Instead it has a small aluminum block that has an adhesive side, and a thermal pad side, and is clamped down onto the processor by putting the two halves together. This allows some freedom on the location of the SoC relative to the lid. First off, same nice packaging the Tinker owners are familiar with: The case itself is quite …

I first used Kingston endurance SD card with Armbian Buster image. This failed due some incompability with Odroid N2 UHS implementation, but Sandisk extreme SD card worked with same image. After successful boot runned nand-sata-install to ADATA SP 550NS38 SSD connected using VL817 SATA Adaptor (2109:0715). Upgraded the Debian to Bullseye and installed Mesa 21.2.0 packages from experimental repositories, arm64 firefox-esr and armhf Chromium via multiarch to use widevine extracted from ChromeOS images (local err.ee web broadcasts some programs with widevine encryption). This was in the end of august. It mostly worked, but had 3 weird problems that I think to have sol…

Orange Pi Zero NTP Stratum 1 PPS GPS Server with Armbian OS. Link to the Tutorial - http://schwartzel.eu3.org/ntp-stratum1.html This tutorial uses a 3.3V capable GPS module with PPS output - TOPGNSS GN-701 (u-blox 7) but other similar modules should work. This tutorial is for the Orange Pi Zero, but will probably work for other boards. I couldn't easily do a comprehensive hardware and software tutorial on this forum, so I've published it on my web server and linked from here and attached a PDF. Link to the Tutorial - http://schwartzel.eu3.org/ntp-stratum1.html Tutorial PDF ntp-stratum1.pdf If you spot any typo's or errors please let me…

Hi, This topic was a initially a question and become a tutorial to use push buttons on orange pi PC. This tutorial has been made with an Orange PI PC running on "Armbian_5.35_Orangepipc_Debian_jessie_default_3.4.113.img". With this example you will be able to launch 3 different scripts for each push button : /usr/local/bin/run<Wpi GPIO number>short.sh -> immediately launched when a button is pressed /usr/local/bin/run<Wpi GPIO number>long.sh -> launched after a long pression /usr/local/bin/run<Wpi GPIO number>release.sh -> launched when a button is released (but not after a long pression) …

(disclaimer) No itention to make a Frankendebian (https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian) but ubuntu package "zram-config" works perfectly. I tested it for two weeks in a: Orange PI Zero 512MB Armbian Stretch 5.40 4.14.18, Orange PI PC2 Armbian Stretch 5.40 4.14.18, AMD Sempron microserver Debian Stretch 9.4 4.9.0-6-amd64. A short tutorial: 1. Download zram-config package (it's a universal package, it does not matter the architecture in use) wget http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/z/zram-config/zram-config_0.5_all.deb 2. Install it sudo dpkg -i zram-config_0.5_all.deb 3. Remove the installer …

Hi all. I've made a new video where I test all storage devices for the NanoPi M4. 8GB, 16GB and 32GB eMMC modules, NVMe drive, sd-card and SSD over USB3. Here's the video. Here's my gathered data. Storage speeds -------------- 8GB eMMC module read : 160 MB/s write : 11 MB/s 16GB eMMC module read : 175 MB/s write : 50 MB/s 32GB eMMC module read : 173 MB/s write : 111.6 MB/s 256GB NVMe read : 697.7 MB/s write : 401 MB/s (630MB/s for 2.5GB, then 300 MB/s) M4 sd-card read : 70 MB/s write : 20 MB/s …

I need a suggestion for a samba server (guess that is what it is called). I have an 8 TB external powered HD, and need a device that I can attach it to, so I can "see" it on the network. I had it attached to the USB 3 port on my Asus router, but it had issues, because the router did not support the 8 TB HD. I now have it connected to one of my microPCs (Tronsmart Ara X5) USB 3 ports, but I am only gettting a max of 12 MBs speed. I would like an inexpensive board that will support that drive and is easy to set up as a samba server..... thanks.

Today I had the pleasure of benchmarking an ARM64 server. This server has been made available for Armbian to test native ARM64 image building. I knew nothing about the server. Nobody told me any details. So everything was an adventure for me to find out. I got SSH access, so my research began. A lscpu informed me it had 32-cores all clocked at 3.3Ghz. Spoiler nicod@worksonarmbian:~$ lscpu Architecture: aarch64 CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit, 64-bit Byte Order: Little Endian CPU(s): 32 On-line CPU(s) list: 0-31 Thread(s) per core: 1 Core…

Hallo, this Mini-Howto describes how to change the behavior of the onboard LEDs during booting. There are many ways to do that. Two ways are shown here, a SysV style using /etc/rc.local and a systemd style using a configuration file in /etc/tmpfiles.d/. The systemd file is earlier interpreted than rc.local. It is tested on Banana Pi M1*/M2/R1 with Debian jessie next (5.0x, 4.4.x). * partly Which LEDs could be accessed? root@bananapim2:~# ls -1 /sys/class/leds/ bpi-m2:blue:usr bpi-m2:green:usr bpi-m2:red:usr * The Banana Pi M1 lists the blue LED but it couldn't be set via /etc/tmpfiles.d/ or /etc/rc.local. Which beh…

I had bought the kit because I got attracted by its compact size. I had problems with my old media pc so good opportunity to tackle something new. I thought, my requirements for a media server would be quite low/easy to fulfill: smooth playback of 1080p movies clean multichannel sound access to firefox After testing all avaliable images on the rockpi, it was clear, that actually only LE offers exciting movie enjoyment. I had to realize, that my ideas are quite demanding after all. So it was clear, I had to get the driver from radxa working on LE. Why? well, hardware design of rockpi4 with extension HATs is someho…

Hi all. I've finished my review video about the NVIDIA Jetson Nano. I kept it simple, more videos to come on gameplay and neural network self learning. Here's the review video. I like it a lot. Does Blender great, and works well as light desktop. Loving the graphics drivers and hoping soon the other SBC's can have simular good drivers. It is close to being my favorite. If only the cpu had more power... Here my gathered data. Spoiler Check power mode : sudo nvpmodel -q Set 5W mode : sudo nvpmodel -m1 Set 10W mode : sudo nvpmodel -m0 config file : sudo nano /etc/nvpmodel.conf 5W Mode cl…
