Hello everybody. I am trying to build an DIY headset from scratch and I originally planning to use some armbian OS for its SBC at its heart of the device (like an orange pi, or something maybe a bit stronger who knows - I happily accept recommendations). For the headset it is necessary to have proper opengl support with hardware rendering capabilities and also good to have video acceleration maybe so I think the legacy kernel fits the purpose best. PROBLEM: I tried to plug in the HDMI display - it does not work. Details: The display is seemingly not working when attached to the HDMI port. I see some led flashing so I think s…

  3. Been doing some RK3588 board porting and kept running into the same category of bug — dtc compiles clean, dtbs_check passes, but the board either panics on suspend or a peripheral silently fails to probe. Stuff like: Peripheral on the EE supply wired to something that only stays alive in the AO domain → suspend-resume panic Copy-pasted a GPIO bank with 32 pins, used pin 35 → kernel panic at driver probe SPI clock request exceeds PLL maximum → silent bus hang Two nodes sharing the same GIC SPI interrupt line None of these are schema violations — they require knowing the actual cross-domain constraints of the SoC, which dtc has no idea about. …

  5. Hi all. You might have already heard. Armbian is aiming to support the Raspberry Pi4. @rpardini already made well working images for it. In this video I talk about why we would want Armbian for the RPi4, and I show you around in Armbian Jammy 5.13 for the RPi4. We do need to find someone who wants to take the task on him/her to be maintainer for RaspberryPi4 at Armbian. For this you need one spare board that can be used for testing when new release are made. Here some info I gathered. 8. I think this qualifies as a hardware hack? Certainly amuses me. Hopefully others enjoy it as well. So never quite got my 3.5 mm audio jack working properly on my M4V2 (though others reportedly did). But did find a way to get audible tones from the PWM fan control by playing with the PWM period, so decided to see if I could get music out of my M4V2 in another way ... What follows is interesting exploration of: Finding interesting ways to repurpose NanoPi M4 Cases Loading MIDI files in python3 Brushing up on music theory Finding some free and appropriate Halloween Music $ sudo install pip3 $ sudo pip3 install MIDI…

  9. Lately, I started writing a few articles on the OrangePi Zero, as I am trying to use it as part of a conference recording tool and to reference what I know about this board on the OrangePi Community docs website. Of course, I have to show my command lines, and their results. I used to post my commands on gist, then use Carbon to generate an image with the commands and their outputs… But that’s quite a lot of boring work… I then discovered asciinema and the recording that can be transformed into a GIF file thanks to asciicast2gif. It worked pretty well under Ubuntu for my previous projects, but it was not really practical to launch it, is…

Thanks to ASUS, I got my hands on one of these after seeing what appeared to be a giant heat sink fin integrated into the top of the case. This case may be of interest to non-Tinker owners as well, it is not designed like the equivalent Pi cases with a fixed aluminum stud touching the SoC. Instead it has a small aluminum block that has an adhesive side, and a thermal pad side, and is clamped down onto the processor by putting the two halves together. This allows some freedom on the location of the SoC relative to the lid. First off, same nice packaging the Tinker owners are familiar with: The case itself is quite …

  12. Hello everybody. I'm little bit confused with this think. Which libraries are good (best) for H5 OPiZeroPlus board .? - WiringPI - ArmbianIO - GPIOzero or ..?? I have small script for timer switch, but it is not stably as well as I can. Button press is not accurate. (some pull-up/down are missing probably) Thanks for answer or suggestion. 14. Anyone ever dealt with OpenMediaVault (OMV) on SBC? Great piece of software but pretty slow, right? One of the many reasons why that happened are outdated crappy kernels and bad settings. I looked at an OMV image for A20 based boards like Banana Pi Pro recently, ended up here http://simplenas.com/download/bananas-simple-system and simply thought: Are you kidding me? Your stable release is based on horribly outdated Debian Wheezy, a kernel 3.4.something and a 2.x OMV release?! What a mess... Igor had an OMV install routine since a long time in his Debian-micro-home-server post-processing script but since an Armbian user evaluated using Armbian's build system to…

ODROID HC1 Mini Review ODROID XU4 is one of the most powerful boards Armbian supports (due to being a big.LITTLE design with 4 x A15@2GHz and 4 x A7@1.4GHz). Though the SoC is a bit old performance is still impressive, the SoC features 2 independent USB3 ports (on XU3/XU4 one is connected to an USB Gigabit Ethernet chip, the other to an internal USB3 hub providing 2 USB3 receptacles) but in the past many users had troubles with USB3 due to cable/connector problems (the USB3-A receptacle specification/design is a total fail IMO, unfortunately we've still not USB-C everywhere) underpowering problems with Hardkernel's Cloudshell 1 or XU4 powere…

The best I can get is a black image from it. 20. I'm going to use an orange Pi zero to make a thermostat adjustable via lan; do you know how to point me to some easy to apply project? I tried several projects, with ds1820b sensors and relais card for raspberry, but I have problems for example with the libraries RPi.GPIO because they do not match those OPi.GPIO. I can currently turn the relays on and off with an android app or via terminal command.

  22. Hi all. The Panfrost GPU driver is finally starting to mature for Mali G52 on the Odroid N2/N2+ and Khadas VIM3. It doesn't perform great yet. But this will improve with time. In this video I show how to activate the panfrost driver on Armbian mainline. To activate panfrost : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade sudo reboot Khadas VIM3 support is in the making. This also works on any other mainline image. Greetings.

  24. Hi Yesterday I spend the whole day to install Armbian Desktop (XFCE) on my Pinebook Pro. Why Armbian ? The PBP was delivered with Manjaro Arm on it. Everything worked fine until Manjaro stopped support for the Arm platform. For about one year there is no update on stable and the unstable branch couldn't establish a connection to Wifi. I used Manjaro Arm to install tow-boot to the SPI following this website: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=17529 I downloaded the current Bookworm XFCE edition and wrote that to an SD card. 25. Hi all. In my latest video I test an Armbian image for X86/AMD64. I try it on the Rock Pi X. This also works on any other x86 pc. This is just a preview of what is possible. It is not an official release in any way. Armbian is only supported on ARM single board computer. But hell it is nice to use it on this too. Big thanks to all the Armbian developers. 27. So, I was doing some reading on how to control PWM fans under Linux. The lm-sensors package has a fancontrol script, but pwmconfig doesn't recognize the PWM devices on my NanoPi M4V2. There's also this repository which has a pwm-fan service, which might be the same one that Friendly Desktop uses (referenced in this post). But then I found this rather interesting link from the Kobol guys: https://wiki.kobol.io/helios4/pwm/. Apparently the Linux kernel has built-in thermal control and user space scripting isn't even required, just editing the Device Tree. But as we have easy user overlays for the RK3399, let's go ... tparys@m4v2:~$ sudo ar…

  30. Orange Pi Zero NTP Stratum 1 PPS GPS Server with Armbian OS. Link to the Tutorial - http://schwartzel.eu3.org/ntp-stratum1.html This tutorial uses a 3.3V capable GPS module with PPS output - TOPGNSS GN-701 (u-blox 7) but other similar modules should work. Since I've seen some really weird disk/IO benchmarks made on SBCs the last days and both a new SBC and a new SSD arrived in the meantime I thought let's give it a try with a slightly better test setup. I tested with 4 different SoC/SBC: NanoPi M3 with an octa-core S5P6818 Samsung/Nexell SoC, ODROID-C2 featuring a quad-core Amlogic S905, Orange Pi PC with a quad-core Allwinner H3 and an old Banana Pi Pro with a dual-core A20. The device considered the slowest (dual-core A20 with just 960 MHz clockspeed) is the fastest in reality when it's about disk IO. Since most if not all storage 'benchmarks' for SBC moronically focus on sequential transfer speeds o…

  36. A very hackish port exists of this Raspberry PI RGB LED Matrix Library which works for Allwinner H3 devices. This works by bit-banging 14 GPIO pins simultaneously to achieve about a 10Mhz throughput / 100fps refresh rate. Refer to here: https://github.com/mrfaptastic/opi-allwinner-h3-rgb-led-matrix I managed to easily get up and running using an Orange PI. Refer to the README of the github repository.

  39. Hi there, this very short tutorial is a solution when you need to backup/clone/save as small *.img file as possible of your whole fully bootable system (e.g. you have 8GB card but you want to make smaller system image for 2GB card). And another reason why I created this tutorial - I need to burn the same image to many microsd cards. I am using Windows (yup, hate me know) and Debian in these steps: Put your microsd card to Windows machine and make image of card with Win32diskimager. If your card is e.g. 8GB, you get *.img file with the same size (my name backup.img). Now in linux maxine (in my case Debian virtual machine) we are going to work with…

  51. If you use a SIP Voip client on your phone or computer, you can use the sip protocol and scripting to monitor your Armbian board. I'm using Ubuntu Xenial, but other versions should work as well. I have the Linphone client on my phone and I use the free Linphone SIP service. Linphone.org hosts a free SIP service that allows users to make audio or video calls using SIP addresses via the domain sip.linphone.org. You can also send text messages. SIP requires an internet data connection, and my phone is connected via WIFI most of the time except when I'm commuting, so I set up my monitoring chron jobs on the Armbian device to run at times when…

  52. As already done with other topics this will be the start of a new thread collecting more information over time. Since we had a lot of annoying discussions recently regarding Wi-Fi on Orange Pi Zero and in general I thought let's give it a try a few days ago. I did some preparations in the meantime (monitoring 24/7 Wi-Fi throughput in 2.4 GHz band for example) and then started to test in a not too crowded environment here. As a start some quick Wi-Fi tests with a random 'quality' USB Wi-Fi dongle and 3 different Wi-Fi chipsets that can be found an a few boards Armbian supports: RTL8192CU (used on a lot of cheap USB dongles and even on …

  53. Hi, This topic was a initially a question and become a tutorial to use push buttons on orange pi PC. This tutorial has been made with an Orange PI PC running on "Armbian_5.35_Orangepipc_Debian_jessie_default_3.4.113.img". With this example you will be able to launch 3 different scripts for each push button : /usr/local/bin/run<Wpi GPIO number>short.sh -> immediately launched when a button is pressed /usr/local/bin/run<Wpi GPIO number>long.sh -> launched after a long pression /usr/local/bin/run<Wpi GPIO number>release.sh -> launched when a button is released (but not after a long pression) …

Hi, I startet with conky-grapes from TwisterOS, which I wanted to tweak to show cpu frequency for every core. But that showed, that conky is not able to do consistent text formatting, so I startet to write my own theme. As I like the armbian title font, I asked for the font, but it turned out, that it did not look as good as expected. So I discarded that variant and stayed with the previous selected fonts. Main purpose is to use that monitor in home cinema, therefore I used bigger fonts, which are readable from distance. Feedback is welcome.

  55. Now that there are an increasing number of boards running in 64 bit mode (Aarch64) it might happen that you want/need to run a 32 bit application on a 64 bit OS. I suspect that there is more than one way to do this, but here's what I've been using: dpkg --add-architecture armhf apt-get update apt-get install libc6:armhf libstdc++6:armhf Some applications need the following step to run: cd /lib ln -s arm-linux-gnueabihf/ld-2.23.so ld-linux.so.3 There is a downside to this approach - after adding armhf you have to be careful when installing new packages that you get the right version and don't end up installing 32bit packages that you don't need.

The following is a short overview what you can expect from small and big H3 devices when used as a NAS. I chose the least capable device (OPi Lite for $12: not even Ethernet and just 512MB DRAM) and the best possible (OPi Plus 2E for $35: GBit Ethernet, 3 USB host ports exposed that do not have to share bandwidth, 2GB DRAM). I wanted to test also a H3 device in between with 1GB DRAM but since results are somewhat predictable I dropped the whole idea (the performance bottleneck on all Fast Ethernet equipped devices will be network unless you add the $7.50 for an USB-Ethernet dongle -- see below -- and all other Gbit Ethernet capable H3 devices are not…

  59. Note: Guide Updated May 2017, as I realise that /dev/input/event3 may not always be the IR receiver device on your armbian installation. Hi All, I recently bought an Orange PI PC and the best thing I ever did was install Armbian straight away (and donate). Now that I have a bit of spare time, I wanted to configure my Orange PI PC to do something ridiculous like play Rick Ashley 'Never going to give you up' upon pressing the 'red button' on some generic Chinese IR remote for an LED light strip I have in my living room. Thanks to Armbian, most of the pieces are in place (such as the SunXI IR package) with the distribution, you just need t…

  60. I've been doing some tests with NanoPi M4 these days. While I'm not a professional board reviewer, here I can share some early performance numbers to you. Beware that none of these tests fit into real world use cases, they are just provided as-is. Besides, Armbian development on RK3399 boards are still at a very early stage, so any of these numbers may change in the future, due to software changes. Unless mentioned, all tests are done using Armbian nightly image, FriendlyARM 4.4 kernel, CPU clocked at 2.0/1.5GHz Powering NanoPi M4 is my first board powered by USB-C, while RK3399 is not power-hungry under normal load, I do doubt if 5V/3A power supply …

Hi all. I've just finished reviewing the Khadas VIM3. It's an amazing SBC with unmatched performance. It's got the Amlogic A311D SoC. Comparable with the S922X of the Odroid N2. But the 4x A73 cores are clocked at 2.2Ghz and the 2 x A53 cores to 1.8Ghz. So it performs a lot better. It also comes with an NPU, MIPI-DSI and MIPI-CSI. And can be powered with USB type-c from 5V up to 20V. Here my review video. Here all my gathered information. 67. Hi All, After I accomplished my IR Red Key Rick Rolling experiment the other day with much success, and from general end-luser use with Armbian, there were two things which irritated me, which are namely due to the default ALSA configuration that comes with stock Debian and that Armbian inherits. These were: Update: 11 September 2017. This guide will not work for newer Armbiam (Debian) installations which comes with Pulseaudio by default. If you really want what this tutorial provides, you will need to uninstall pulseaudio first: sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio 1) You can't have simultaneous applications using an Audio device. So, how ab…

  68. Hello reader I will report here about my experience to watch Netflix as written in the title. To do so, I got a current LE image from @balbes150 (thank you). You may be asking the same question as I do (did), why using the image from balbes and not the official one from the download page ? It is actually quite simple, balbes integrates the latest Kernel for his LE builds. While on a x86 system the kernel isn't so interesting, it is on ARM systems, because a lot of the development happens 1 or 2 year later of the release of the SoC. I have asked him about the different versions he offers for Le Potato: All versions…

Well, this is what I did on my Orange PI PC running Buster desktop with Kernel 5.4, as of April 2020. sudo apt install xrdp xorgxrdp sudo systemctl enable xrdp sudo reboot ... and that was it. One with HTop, another to check sensors. And the 3th to execute my benchmarks. First thing I saw were the 128-threads. Being used to seeing 6, this was almost unbelievable. 73. EDIT: Solution in next post (this started as a question; yeah maybe I should have split it, but whatever). Apologies if this is dumb question. I finally got my hands on some appropriate (64-bit) hardware, and ready to install software now. I have read so many threads (in Kobol Club and elsewhere), Issues (at GitHub as well as Atlassian) and I think this is solved by now (on Armbian) but cannot confirm? I got my hands on a "Set 9" Orange Pi Lite + GC2035 camera a while back and I've finally been able to put together a self-contained object detection device using Tensorflow, without sending any image data outside for processing. It runs them through a Tensorflow object detection model and spits out the same frame with extra metadata about objects it found, and renders a box around them. Using all four cores of the H2 it can do about 2-3 fps. The app keeps track of the count of all object types it has seen and exposes the metrics in prometheus format, for easy…

Recently I tried to use CC1101 Radio-boards to access with spidev0.0; this works after some research: 1. activate spidev in the /boot/armbianEnv.txt (important) 2. in armbian-config hardware activate spidev in the downloaded test routines the speed of the spi is set too high (8000000) 3. set this down to 4000000 In addition: I need the interurpt functions of GDO0 and GDO2 in the next test program. 80. I own a few Android TV boxes that have poor thermal designs that are prone to overheating when under sustained load. This can either cause your device to significantly slow down or shut down entirely. This can be fixed by cutting a hole in the bottom on your TV box above the SoC and sticking a small USB fan on it. In my case I am using a AC Infinity 40mm x 20mm USB Fan that cost me £10. CH340-fan-control is a python script to only activate my TV boxes USB fan when required by using a USB relay module. I'd expect somebody (or several somebodies) have already wrote a similar script for the same device but I failed to find it so here is my effort at fixing this c…

  87. Hi everyone, it's been a while since i've posted but I have a new project that i'd like to share and hopefully get feedback and ideas from the community. Ever since the first 2 x gigabit ethernet devices came out, I've been thinking that there were a lot of potentially interesting networking use cases. I happened to be re-configuring pihole on a new opi zero, and I had some hardware issues that caused my connection to be a bit flaky on a website that I "shouldn't" have been using. This gave me the inspiration to create a gateway that intentionally manipulates traffic in such a way that you train good usage habits of websites that can be addictive. …

Overview: SinoVoip sent me a few days ago a review sample of their new Banana Pi M2+. It's based on Allwinner's H3 SoC and tries very hard to be a 99% clone of Orange Pi Plus/PC. SinoVoip chose to stay compatible to nearly all pin mappings therefore any OS image that works on Orange Pi Plus will also work on BPi M2+ but some things need adjustments. BPi M2+ features GBit Ethernet, eMMC, 2 USB host ports and one USB OTG that do not have to share bandwidth (no internal USB hub used and H3's 3rd USB host port unused unfortunately), Ampak AP6212 to provide WiFI/BT, fortunately no crappy USB-to-SATA bridge, a CSI interface to be used together with an OV…

Many of us might need top-notch external CNC controller and Novusun is a good option. I loved EC500 MACH3 Ethernet port 6 axis Motion Controller as it can support 16 optical-isolated digital output ports along with 18 optical-isolated digital input ports. It has a 24-36v dc power input for its IO power supply offering efficient anti-interference ability. Also, the latest EMC design makes it easy to work with the CNC motion controller.

In case you haven't read the PC's review already maybe it's time to do it now since here only important differences will be shown. Since it's based on an Allwinner SoC (system on chip) please keep in mind that you will always find the most comprehensive and up-to-date information in the linux-sunxi wiki: http://linux-sunxi.org/Orange_Pi_One The most important differences between One and PC as follows: Smaller size: the PC used the RPi form factor (85mm x 55mm) while the One is just 69mm x 48mm in size 512MiB instead of 1GiB DRAM (still two DDR3L modules making u…

This is some more research based on prior efforts. The goal is to make more efficient use of available RAM. If the system runs low on memory only two options are possible: either the kernel invokes the oom-killer to quit tasks to free memory (oom --> out of memory) or starting to swap. Swap is a problem if it happens on slow media. 'Slow' media usually describes the situation on SBC. 'Average' SD cards (not A1 rated) are slow as hell when it's about random IO performance. So swapping is usually something that should be avoided. But... technology improves over time. In Linux we're able to swap not only to physical storage but since a …
