Hello. I've been playing with several low-cost SBCs for a couple of weeks now and I'm totally hooked on these incredible little things. Most of my boards are Orange Pi's simply because of the low cost (but I do have ODROID XU4 and a couple RPis too). Somehow one of my favorites seem to be the little OPi Zero (H2+), I'm using it as a "shell account" for if and when I need access to linux command line (most of my "big machines" are Win-based). However the Zero's POE implementation is... kinda non-existant really. You can read more about it elsewhere, let's just say it isn't usable without additional hardware. For my purposes, the OPiZero H2+ is powe…

I made a funny project for trying to use the ARM single board as the USB disk or cdrom. I did a lot of optimizations for the size and speed. Releases: https://github.com/usboot/USBootPi/releases USBootPi supports NanoPi M1. It also supports OrangePi One/PC but we need more USB cables(one for power, another one for OTG). Sorry, there is no the English readme now.

I have been having some long running, on and off discussion with @lanefu in IRC (and elsewhere), because I know this is his area of expertise. However he is busy, and I can appreciate he might not want to spend his free time talking about stuff he gets paid to do M-F. Then I also realized, certainly I am not the only one interested in Armbian in order to be doing such things. So I thought I would make a thread about this, instead, to open the discussion to a larger group people here in the broader community. I have my own thoughts, concerns, things I want to do, and have already done, but I thought I would make a more general thread where like …

I'm having some success installing Debian on Raspberry Pi 3B+ and thought I'd proceed with making an Armbian build in order to have equivalent environments with other boards in my cluster. Is there any process/channel for this or should I just make a PR on the repo? What are some particular prerequisites I should be aware of that might block it from merging? I am very aware of armbian's stance on Raspberry Pi, and I understand you do not want to support it officially (if nothing else because you'd have difficulty handling the incoming clueless users), but I think there are a lot in the intended armbian audience who have Raspis lying around who would be ha…

So, what do you think of the new Raspbery Pi Zero Wireless? How will other competitors respond? An OrangePi Zero with Bluetooth would trounce this board, or a Nanopi could do, just gotta hit at or below the same price point.

Here in turkey they got a own webpage for/from Orange Pi: http://orangepi.com.tr/index.html On their download-pages for the Orange Pis they have mostly armbian-images linked. OK, old 5.25 ones - but they refer for other Operating Systems the normal Orange Pi webpage. Download Page is http://orangepi.com.tr/destek.html , but you have to select the model of the OPi. I bought a Firefly RK3399 about a year ago. Since then I have moved to Friendly NanoPC T4. I bought a second NanoPC T4 because my first machine running Armbian Bionic 18.04.4 has been working very well. I have been anti X86 and decided ARM was more interesting. Now to compile I need Armbian Build. So I bought a $100 HP 15 Laptop, a basic 4GB / 500GB Sata machine running Focal / Ubuntu 20.04. OK I have since reevaluated my situation and see more AMD machines in my future. I was able to run Armbian 20.05 on the HP and that impressively gave me a working Ubuntu Focal on my NanoPC. Except it is unoptimized and creaky. not really a working desktop…

I am not a big fan of btrfs in general. But rather than shit up other people's threads where they mention it, I decided to create my own here where I can lay out my arguments, and then I can link to it instead and people can read it if they want. Some people are not going to like to hear this, so I will back it up by saying I have done fair amount of research into these advanced file systems over the last several years. It is a topic of great interest for me. At the same time, I view all knowledge as provisional, and maybe some things changed in the meantime, so discussion and factual corrections are welcomed. I will also try and spare the reade…

@Igor @zador.blood.stained @tkaiser + any other mods, devs and users. I'll try and keep this brief and to the point but I probably won't succeed. Donations and campaigns We ever thought about doing a kickstarter or indiegogo campaign for donations? I'm not sure of the exact differences between them but I know you can do campaigns for non profit means and donations. ie: Employing more devs, buying boards with donations, etc... w/e it is you guys might need. I'd be willing to set up the campaign with basics like pictures, description outline and what not with some more input. Then hand the 'keys' to the profile over to Igor or whoever, for financia…

Hello, I'm currently running Gentoo on my BananaPIs (M1). I'm using one as graphical Dashboard using DirectFB. Unfortunately, DirectFB is deprecated, not anymore supported and facing some compilation issue. Time to change. I tried with SDL configured with KMS but it's crashing. I don't want to install X because it will take ages to compile without any garanty it will work at the end. So ... probably the time to change. So, is DirectFB still supported on Armbian ? If not, is SDL2 working without X support. If not, with X support ? And if so, is X accelerated ? Thanks Laurent

Downloaded the latest build Armbian_25.2.1_Orangepi5_bookworm_vendor_6.1.99_minimal.img Cloned the git repo for rtl88x2bu Built the new module with cd /usr/src/linux-headers-6.1.99-vendor-rk35xx/arch/ ln -s arm64 aarch64 cd /rtl88x2bu make KVER=6.1.99-vendor-rk35xx -j8 make KVER=6.1.99-vendor-rk35xx install modprobe 88x2bu.ko Looked at dmesg, and I see that it gives a message that the kernel is tainted and the module will not load. No working wifi. This same procedure worked fine with the 6.1.75 kernel of a previous release.

Hi there, Yesterday, I asked this question on Twitter, but did not get lots of answers. I know I could get an aarch64 workstation, run a 64 bits kernel on it and a 32 bits userspace on top of it, but where is the fun? One year ago or so, I built an armv7 Docker image for me, and I realized only this week that it had been downloaded more than 2 million times. What a pleasant surprise. I launched the build once again to get everything updated, but I discovered the armv7 CI/CD services I used to run my builds on were ... gone. I then switched back to my Orange Pi Zero "farm" to get the images built, but it takes ages, and you know how reliable the SDCar…

Want to know if some one succeded compiling ffmpeg with hw acceleration? Actually I'm looking for board which is good for Home Media Server with support for transcoding 1080p(4k? if any can) with good fps (24+) Already tried rpi3 results are not that good as i want 13fps for 720p x264 Hi10 5Mb/s bitrate=> 720p x264 5Mb/s bitrate So i think 1080p will be much slower. Do you think orange pi prime can handle this type of tasks well?

Dear all, As said elsewhere, I'm interested in distributed scientific computing, namely BOINC, and more specifically the Einstein@Home project: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/ https://einsteinathome.org/fr/home ARM platforms seem to be a good choice for that purpose IMHO. Even though they lack the raw power of x86_64, at least they don't use a lot of energy and don't need active cooling most of the time (I can't stand the noise of a fan ). At the moment I'm running BOINC on two ARM nodes: a Raspberry PI 3 (Raspbian) and a NanoPi M1 (Armbian). Both are quite dated now and don't allow me to contribute much to this project. …

Hi, I have been studying Armbian's build script, and I have managed to extrapolate a standalone u-boot build process for my NanoPC-T4 by cherry-picking the relevant commands / patches from the builder repo: https://github.com/tmountain/u-boot-nanopct4 This works well, and it opens the door for additional flexibility for those who need it regarding making the most of their hardware. That said, it raises a few questions. 1) My NanoPC-T4 will not boot without the Armbian patches. The vanilla u-boot does not work out of the box. I reported this issue here, but I'm wondering if the Armbian folks ever try to get patches back into …

Since my current board (Cubieboard 2) has been kicked out of the game, it's time to move on to a new one. Is there any chance to see an Armbian version for the Banana Pi R2 someday? This board is winner for me because of the Dual SATA feature (the router, not so much). If there are no plans for this board, please tell me for how long you'll support the Cubietruck, since it's my second choice. Thx in advance...

Good day everyone. I'm looking for your recommendations on a not too expensive ARMs powered board. - Preferably 16 or more cores (big.LITTLE mix is fine) - Cortex-A53/A55 or better. - 16GB of RAM or higher - NMVe support - Support for mounting several boards on U1 shallow spaces (depth of 25cm [10 inches] or less) - Support for booting Armbian and CentOS/Fedora Main purpose - system development (Linux, Java, Scala, Go, RUST), Kubernetes, database and overall platform tinkering. The Bamboo Systems - PANDA B1000N looks really nice, but I'm not sure it is in the modestly priced range - unless thinking that paying upfront for the…

Hi there, I'm, the maintainer of the Java library diozero and am looking to test the library on Armbian. I have quite a few devices but am looking to test with a TinkerBoard and Odroid C2. The library includes support for GPIO, I2C, SPI and serial. It includes very high performance memory mapped GPIO control (~10MHz) as well as sysfs and more recently GPIO character device. I've test the GPIO character device code on the Raspberry Pi and just looking at adding support for Armbian. I'm seeing gpioinfo doesn't include GPIO names which I see on the Raspberry Pi (everything is "unnamed") - is there anyway to fix that?

Hi, I was just in the armbian matrix channel asking about FLOSS SBCs, SBCs which can be booted / operated without blobs or with as few blobs as possible. I am not one of those purist Stallmanite zealots who refuse to touch anything which i deem imperfect in the freedom department. Instead I am just trying to be practical and figure out whats the best options for SBCs which respect users. SBCs whose security/integrity is verifiable and doesn't hinge on appeals to authority, like "just trust our secret sauce, it will be fine". I want to know about any projects from the past, things that are in progress, and hear experiences from folks who are interested in open s…

Over a year (or two?) I used a PS1-line in my ~/-bashrc with many cryptic ANSI-Escape-codes which were hard to read and edit export PS1='\[\033[1;36m\]\u\[\033[1;37m\]@\[\033[1;33m\]\h\[\033[1;37m\](\[\033[1;32m\]$THEIP\[\033[1;37m\])\[\033[1;31m\]:\[\033[1;36m\]\w\[\033[1;31m\]\$\[\033[0m\] ' Today I did installed Linux Lite 4.6 on a PC (a former Chromebox) and did see the nice Powerline prompt and did try to use that on a nanoPi Neo2. I must admit I don't really know what to do with my sbc's. After getting them set up there is nothing more I could think of to use them for. I guess part of the fun is in getting them set up, and to run them cool during native kernel builds. Just so it's not a complete waste of money, I spent more (though not a lot) to add dual screens to some of them. Any ideas what else I could use them for? I already have music players (a lot of them, DACs), NAS, home control, security camera, what else do you use them for? I haven't left any of them outside in the sun yet to try out solar power. So, I added dual screens to these ones (left to right, counter clockwise)…

I'm building an advertisement kiosk with the orange pi one, but I have concerns for too high night time screen brightness or too low day time screen brightness. Please could someone one provide me with a solution to solve this issue. I'm not a guru when it comes to Linux programming, but I can run basic Linux commands and can find my way around terminal. I've seen a few solutions; like this (https://askubuntu.com/questions/894460/automatically-adjust-display-brightness-based-on-sunrise-and-sunset), where they get the sunrise and sunset times of the day from a website and use a Cron script to set the screen brightness based on that. Yesterday i did install Armbian_5.86_Aml-s905_Debian_buster_default_5.1.0_20190514.img from @balbes150 on my Sunvell T95KPro (S912). While installing Pihole the Installation does break when trying to start lighttpd. After checking with journalctl -u lighttpd it turns out that the file /usr/share/lighttpd/create-mime.assign.pl is missing, because in the newer lighttpd-version of debian buster the file has be renamed to /usr/share/lighttpd/create-mime.conf.pl (see also https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/lighttpd-does-not-start/6207/11 ) Pihole doesnt know/use the new name with debian buster, so it fails to start the lighttpd …

I'm experience a really weird problem on a very experimental setup: the system is an Armbian build for an unsupported board (Rockchip RK322x) and Ubuntu Focal 20.04 with mainline kernel 5.6.4. The system has issues to boot when enters into systemd: it is slow but all of sudden it goes farther. Many different systemd services are complaining, expecially the journal and the chrony NTP client. Finally I found that the root of the problems is the system time which is abruptly moving back and forth even by months. Subsequent calls to date may report 20 June, then 4 March, then 18 August and so on... The kernel log is fine and, most of all, the very…

hi all i had armbian build running with 'dev' kernel (4.9.0) and armbian 5.24 which worked PERFECT over a month. decided 2 days ago to build from scratch, armbian build system pulled all latest updates and i got 5.24 with kernel 4.9.3 (2 days ago) and 4.9.4 today. None of those would boot properly (ie. can not ping/access the board). I also tried downloading nightly build and that one is not working any more. Iknow these builds are not supported but since it worked very well i think something got broken either in kernel or uboot or in armbian so might be worth a look. tx in advance !

Wow! I read already on other sites that this armbian community has some weird views about what's allowed and what information will be depublished or simply that they are 'famous' for censorship. I actually run directly in it as my thread was directly deleted and just later on - after complaints - released with a deleted link. But why then get's my thread just locked now after 15 replies and not directly deleted? Or why does have one person in this forum the right to tell what's interesting for the community or not? Funny (or sad?) enough that even in the first link in my the thread you can read about the armbian moderators …

Hey all, I'm having a hard time choosing a board for my next SBC project. I've decided on the orange pi zero form factor unless someone can persuade me otherwise. Orange Pi Zero Plus 2 - Better mainline support than H5 - smaller vertically than Pi Zero - hdmi - emmc on board Orange Pi Zero Plus 2 - faster dram speed (can't remember where I read that) - emmc on board - same small vertical size - seems more power hungry /sensi…

Please check performance using armbianmonitor -c While searching for manfid/oemid I did read about a Android-App which can identify SD-Cards using manfid/oemid: SD Insight. Doenst work not on all Android >=7.0 devices (because of a change in 7.0) but on devices <7.0 On the webpage they are using a smartphone - but SD Insight work fine on a And…

Overpriced but absolutely gorgeous. GPD Pocket Mini Laptop I would love an ARM mini netbook with the same form factor (no trackpad) although only a 40-50% price cut could make it interesting to my pockets.

Hello, I spent many hours looking for any working solution how to access my Armbian desktop behind NAT and router with not static IP address over Internet. But I failed at all. In the course of my research I tried VNC Connect by RealVNC, TeamViever, AnyDesk and Google Chrome Remote Desktop. And found neither one working on Armbian. The first tree in the list got installed, but not worked. Maybe because all these were built for Rapsbian, not Armbian. The last one did not get installed at all. No idea why. May be because I had to install it into the Chromium browser, not the Chrome as Chrome is not available for armhf. May be it is not ready for armhf yet. …

Heads up. Here is this HDMI to USB 2.0 capture card, 1080p@30. Very useful for posting captures, or using your laptop as an improvised HDMI monitor. It can be get for $5, shipping form the EU, USA and Russia. Here is the link: https://aliexpress.com/item/4001019746564.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.613263c0C55RA2 It got very good reviews (unless the device looks identical on the outside but has different internals):

Recently, nothing is happening on the SBC market. Libre Computer seems to be in a bad financial condition after having failed with La frite and the kickstarter campaign. Projects on SBC on cpu amlogic S912 and S922 are dead and it is not known if they will see the light of day. Pine is busy with its smartphone and probably nothing new will not be released yet. Xunlong who lives not from sales but from subsidies from the Chinese government is also silent. Expected allwinner processors from the new A100, A200 series are just under design. Only khadas released VIM3L from the S905X3 cpu. They even have a linux image already on this board. It can be downloaded from the khadas …

As I do not have any Intel based system, and I'd like to buid Armbian, my options are fairly limited. I have a PowerBook G4, but I can't build the Linaro toolchain there, because it requires autogen, which needs guile, which won't build due to undefined symbols. However, the Linaro toolchain builds on my Cubieboard2. I've read a little about how to build Armbian, and to me it looks a bit complicated (I'm used to building stuff myself, I've just never built an entire Linux system before). -So why is it necessary (or recommended) to use a virtual machine for building ? -Is it just to get a "clean system" before building, does it have to do with "cleanup" after…

Hi all. I've always been using the OPi+ as NAS. That gets me up to 13MB/s. More than enough for me. All that is on it are backups, movies and mp3's. It's only got 100Mbps ethernet. And the attached storage devices can't do a lot more either. A USB2 external HDD and a 2.5" HDD. I once tried the same with my OPi+2 and didn't see any changes in network transfer rates. Didn't mind, because I was happy with it. Now I've got the Odroid HC4. Both sata HDDs get +100MB/s read and write. But my network transfer speed is again 13MB/s. I'm using a Gbit router with 5Ghz wifi and the 5Ghz wifi on M4V2. Also OMV on Buster mainline on the HC4 with smb share. For…

Hello Friends, Is anyone aware of jtag support on orangepi 2g/3g/4g iot boards. Looking at the schematics, i could find the tms/tdi etc pins (for 2g/3g/4g iot), but they seem to be not connected to any gpio or other headers. Kindly correct me if wrong. I know these have UART, but am specifically looking for some jtag access. Thanks Tarkshya

Hi, I am trying to use a tinker board S as a Logitech Media Server for my multi room installation. The server runs well when streaming radio for a whole day or more. As soon as I start to stream music from the attached USB drive it stops after a few minutes for some seconds continuous then and stops again. After a few of this itterations it stops completely. I tryed to install all available server-OS. At the moment I run BIONIC. I looked in the LMS logs but found noothing. As I am new too this kind of topics I do not know how to find the issue. Congratulations. Armbian is adedd to the distrowatch list. https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=armbian Already 2 years ago I submitted you to the list but then they refused to listen to me, despite the fact that RaspbianOS was placed a long time ago. I think that this will further influence the popularity of the venture.

I hope this is the right section to post my inquiry, and I hope it doesn't breach any forum policies I'm excited to have learned about this community for the current project I've dreamed up. Some background on me: So, professionally I'm a software engineer with ability to self-teach, solve weird problems, and innovate. Personally, I am annoyed, and amazed that what i dreamt up doesn't already exist, and the versions that do exist are very crude, and unimagined. Yes, I know I'm being cryptic, but bare with me for a moment though. I have a vision for a completely untouched modern take on OS design, and completely possible. _Versions_ of it even already exist rig…

Hi all! I'm happily using Armbian on Cubieboard2 working as home server (samba, 4(!) LXC containers with Deluge, tor, owncloud and some other small apps) + VPN client. Pretty happy with it, especially for internal SATA. Recently found that Cubietech releases Cubieboard6 on S-500 CPU with same form-factor and SATA. That means, that all casing/housing can stay intact. LXC containers also can be migrated since CPU is still ARMv7. But at the same time found somewhere on this forum, that board is not really good quality... Cannot argue or agree with this since I don't have a board and it looks costly. So my question - what is advis…

I have an OrangePi Prime with 2 GB RAM. I'm running a server-like node.js app that does constant writes to .json files and text log files. Let's call it "database storage". The app is not otherwise RAM intensive, can run fine on 512 MB boards. I'm thinking of putting all my RAM to use and move the database storage to a RAM disk made with Zram. Do you see any potential problems and interference with the way Zram is configured for this board?

Hello All. I am fairly new in Embedded Linux and in this forum. I need to develop a small size IoT ARM Quad Core Board. I like to have some advise on my project's proper development path. First let me share my target needs of the project: -1. ARM CPU (run Linux) - I think for my project, Quad-Core is more than enough -2. RAM 1GB/2GB -3. eMMC 16GB for OS Boot -4. SD Card for file storage (up-to 512GB) -5. Two USB2.0 (One Host Mode and One Device Mode) and one USB3.0 (Only Host Mode is Ok. Its for faster file transfer to connected external Portable HDD) -6. I wonder how much ram is consumed by kernel, system services and tmpfs on a typical armbian system? Rockchip rk3308G has 64MB ram packaged in cpu. A dirty cheap 4 layer board could have a cpu, a few discrete power chips, a mmc card slot, and a wifi/bt module, with a bunch of low speed io and two usb 2.0 port, one host and one otg. The cpu is quad core cortex A35, powerful and power efficient, compared to Pi Zero W or BBB. Does that sound interesting for an iot node? Or it is too crippled to do anything useful? I hope python or node.js could run on such a board, but for node, the memory usage should be very careful. Any suggestions?

Hi there, with the global lockdown, I had to move my "lab" at home... and I have trouble with the infamous WAF. So I moved almost everything in the attic, and would have loved to pull an Ethernet cable from my ISP box to the "lab" Wi-Fi router, but it's not significant other's compatible. As strange as it may seem, the Wi-Fi signal coming from the ISP box is really strong in the attic, so I thought of redirecting the Wi-Fi to the 24 ports switch thanks to a SBC. I don't want the SBC to act as a router, I want to use the router which is in my ISP box, so that I can still interact easily with the machines in the attic wherever I may be in the house. I…

Hey, we made a tool that allows us to configure the wireless connection of a headless systems using just a smartphone. The reason was that we often ended up in situations where we prepared a headless system with our full stack (see https://nymea.io) and handed it over to someone else to just it in their WLAN. The target group are end users which are not able to use a console. In an attempt to return something to the community we've created a standalone tool for this to share it with others, BerryLan. At the moment it requires to add the nymeas debian repository and install nymea-networkmanager. You can find all the details about it on https://berrylan.app. I…

I'm running Armbian from a emmc 16GB card. When I use the web browser the mouse constantly flickers, is there any way to get this to stop? Is there a graphics driver I should have enabled? When I select Additional Hardware Drivers none show up, so maybe there isnt a GPU accelerated driver available. Also switching between desktops feels sluggish. Maybe Im expecting too much performance from a $50 SBC. Thanks for your help & time in making this distribution. Im just looking to make the best user experience possible.

Hi everyone, I am a LINUX beginner. and I have a NanoPi M4V2, and want to build a mini NAS with OpenMediaVault 5 under Armbian (OMV5 can only run in Armbiam/Debian, not available in Ubuntu) The M4V2 has a SATA hat, and it can support up to 4 hard drives (2.5 inches size), so the SATA hat is powered separately, and I guess this is why it always gets overheat This is what it looks like. There is a 12V fan interface (2pin) on this SATA hat, just right biside the power button. And I found that there are already some solution in the forum of armbian.com, all kinds of scripts, some can drive the Fan according to the CPU's temperature, or even …

What does determine the software available in softy, found in armbian-config? I easily installed NextCloudPi (ncp) using softy on a Buster based image for the OrangePi4. However it lacked an up to date python version needed for Home Assistant. I reinstalled Armbian using the Focal based image. Sadly softy did not list ncp as an option anymore. So I am a bit puzzled what software to expect from softy. The documentation ( https://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_Armbian-Config/#software ) did not mention anything about availability.

I received the BPI M2 Ultra a couple of days ago (thanks to Nora Lee for the board) and worked a while on the BSP to learn and apply some of our changes on the ov5640 driver to be able to use Auto Focus and see if i could get Guvcview working on it. Here are some of my findings: * Working with the BSP is very similar to what we were used to on the Cubieboard A10/A20 era, those who worked with BSP at that time will feel very comfortable. * As usual, the BSP used arm-linux-gnueabi to compile the u-boot and kernel, i think is the Android way, and parses FEX to build a DTB. (Thanks to my old dual-core PC running Lubuntu). * It is hard to know where to change in the …

I've been considering some options for experiments with electronic wind instruments and synthesizers, such as ZynAddSubFx, Fluidsynth. I've seen project Zynthian and they are running it on a Raspberry Pi 3, so that should be a safe choice, right? Although I'm not sure if they are using some mainstream Debian or something heavily adjusted. Also, for a wind instrument I hoped to find something smaller so I can even build it into the instrument itself; although I don't have my hopes high on that - I'm not sure if I'll find an SBC with enough power. I happen to be one of lucky (or not) backers of NextThingCo C.H.I.P. (now mostly out-of-busi…

Hi all, I want to isolate Nextcloud on my BananaPro with a virtual machine. (Background: I want to open the port in the router to sync with Nextcloud from the internet.
