The company behind the Geekbox (my only SBC I still never booted ) in the meantime more known for their Amlogic Vim/Vim2 boards also joins the RK3399 bandwagon with a concept similar to Geekbox. A core module to be combined with a carrier board: Since it's just another RK3399 design Armbian support later is likely. And no, that isn't supposed to be a rude title :-) ! Let me try to explain. What I'm trying to do is to have some sort of device run pi-hole. I have tried this in the past with success but when I last tried it I was using a raspberry pi zero and a usb wifi adapter - so it really only worked for one PC. What I'm now trying to do is to try to do the same for my entire home network. My guess is that I need some sort of small computer to put in front of the first device the internet touches (a router). So if I put a small arm based computer just before the router running pi-hole that (in theroy) should mean all the devices after the pi-hole get the black-hole ad b…

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, so moderators, please feel free to move my post. I'm involved in getting some new development boards onto the market and we've based our software as so many others, on Armbian. What would be needed to get official support from Armbian? We're currently on a mix of Armbian with Ubuntu 18.04 and kernel 4.18.x. A bit of information about the hardware can be found here https://project-x.com.tw/ We haven't opened up our git as yet, but it'll be done soon. I understand that there might be quite a few things we have to do, but we're willing to do it and will provide hardware to developers as …

During development I use snapshot images of sdcard and usb flash disk (nand-sata-install'ed). Unfortunately, the size of common flash/sdcards do start at 16GB nowadays. When I use Win32 Disk Imager, the backups are 2 * 16 GB. I can compress them on PC's disk but in and case writing them back to other sdcards/flash disks take ages. This is because it is a full image, although, say, something like 1 GB on each are used. If there a way to make bootable images which includes only the used parts of the sdcard/flash and be able to write them back?

Hi there, I bought a few months ago a H616 based TV Box, and made the same kind of mistakes this week. I bought an OrangePi Zero2, also sporting a H616. I bought the TVBox because at that time: "wow, an undocumented AllWinnner SoC!", how stupid is that? I bought the Zero2 because CNX software gave a few hints about the SoC features, like the fact the G31 GPU is a Bitfrost GPU, meaning it supports Vulkan, and down the line, it could potentially be supported by Panfrost open-source graphics driver. I'm still dreaming of an Armbian based video encoding SBC, and this SoC (like so many others on the paper) looks promising: Video D…

Hi everyone, we have a new forum set up at orangepi.club now, since the original one runs as if it was run on a OPi One while compiling 5 kernels at the same time, and its mostly broken too (login for example) The new forum is not supposed to be a replacement for this forum, just a place to have a general chat about all systems, not only Armbian. I hope its a good place to post it. Also, if you are a creator of a distro, you can be a moderator for the distribution category. I am not a part of the administration, i am just telling you guys about it, so we get people to know this forum and actually use it, because its better. -moondeck

I wonder how much ram is consumed by kernel, system services and tmpfs on a typical armbian system? Rockchip rk3308G has 64MB ram packaged in cpu. A dirty cheap 4 layer board could have a cpu, a few discrete power chips, a mmc card slot, and a wifi/bt module, with a bunch of low speed io and two usb 2.0 port, one host and one otg. The cpu is quad core cortex A35, powerful and power efficient, compared to Pi Zero W or BBB. Does that sound interesting for an iot node? Or it is too crippled to do anything useful? I hope python or node.js could run on such a board, but for node, the memory usage should be very careful. Any suggestions?

Hi there, let's say I'd like to mimic this device because I'm filming events with several cameras and audio recorders, and that it's really time consuming to synchronize everything before the real editing. So... I was thinking of starting with a GPS module on top of an Orange Pi Zero to get the initial UTC time fix, adding also a temperature compensated crystal to keep it running if we lose the GPS signal (which will happen for sure, as most of my recordings are inside buildings). The goal there is to generate an audio signal thanks to libltc and to add that to the original audio/video in real time. How would you get the GPS+Crystal to set the time for …

I'd like to migrate from SD card Samsung Evo+ to something more durable (I'm running home assistant automation on OPI PC now, mariadb, influx, etc, many writes per minute). I think that I have only two options: go with SBC with EMMC or just buy cheap 32/64 GB SSD with USB adapter. What do you think, which option gives me better durability? Can I assume that EMMC is really durable comparing to SD card? Is USB 2.0 adapter as fast as EMMC?

Hi everyone! I was asked by tkaiser to share something about my PHP control of GPIO pins. I can tell you that I will be happy to do so. Mostly because I'm really extremly good in one thing and that is forgetting how i did something. Now let's cut bulls**t down and start with small introduction of what I'm up to. I'll decsribe what I'm doing and what is working for me so it should all click together as project documentation and tutorial. Also all I'm going to describe is being done on Cubieboard2 (A20) but i guess that it can work almost on any ARM SBC running Debian or Ubuntu. Introduction / Motivation Basically, I'm really interested in connecting low-level …

I appreciate people want to do all sorts of things with their SBCs, but the usage of "cheap PC" must be common, and users will have the expectation of connecting up a HDD or SSD. So I was thinking: how about a M.2 slot instead supporting PCIe x4 so we can buy the biggest, fastest and cheapest per GB SSDs around. You could then eliminate the TF slot, micro-SD cards and eMMC modules, and the system could boot off the drive in the normal Linux manner. I'm not sure where the "support for PCIe x4" comes from, or how much this would affect the price. In the same way, I will probably never use GPIO pins, or IR receivers, cameras, touchscreens, on-board microphones…

Over a year (or two?) So, I've been doing some reading, and found this ... https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/Documentation/devicetree/overlay-notes.rst Looks like a mechanism to dynamically load or unload device tree overlays live. Really the only change is that .dtbo files need to be compiled with symbols (-@) like this: dtc -@ -o myoverlay.dtbo myoverlay.dts And then you can load/unload those overlays after (or during) boot by doing something like this: # Creates the dynamic overlay mkdir /sys/kernel/config/device-tree/overlays/myoverlay # Load the dynamic overlay cat myoverlay.dtbo > /sys/kerne…

Another flavour of Arm Linux. FatdogArm is a port of Fatdog64 to the ARM platform. Currently in Beta release, it is based on Fatdog64 and thus shares much of Fatdog64 features. Like Fatdog64, FatdogArm is intended for desktop-style operations but on the lower-cost ARM-based systems. FatdogArm currently was originally built on A10/Mele A1000 hardware, although it can be easilyadapted for other platforms. These days, FatdogArm is known to run is A20/Cubieboard, Odroid-U2, Odroid-U3, OLPC XO-1.75, OLPC XO-4 Touch, Pandora, Cubox-i i2, Cubox-i i4pro, and Google Nexus7 2012. Hi all, I've a minimal LINUX on a ARM board here (COREELEC on an ODROID N2). It does not use any 'apt--' based software control system. ( I do not know how its actually called ...) about COCKPIT in opposite to eg. Webmin does Cockpit edit just like you would in the configuration files. So it doesn't matter if you do any changes via SSH or via Cockpit. It is pretty neat to view your devices, see whether they run smooth or if one is going mad If you grab it from their website you get the latest and greatest (updates pushed weekly) but the easy way is: apt update && apt-get install cockpit (available since Ubuntu 16.04, needs systemd). I got Version 151. On the tinker board mainline the download was only about 1750Kb, the server side is written in C and in your browser it runs with Javascript and such. Just lik…

Hello guys, I hope, I picked the right section. I'm looking for a most suitable SBC for DVB-T2 decoding. Here in Germany is DVB-T dead, so the successor DVB-T2 is there. BUT, the codec here is H.265 and not H.264... So, my idea is to use an PCTV tripleStick 292e, which is supported by LinuxTV sind kernel version 3.16. This stick is able to decode H.264 in hardware. So, to decode H.265 I need a SoC which is supporting H.265 in hardware. The suitable SoC are i.e. Amlogic S905 (Odroid C2) and RK3266 (Asus Tinker). Which SBC would you take for it? I would like to use mainline kernel, if it's possible. Wha…

Hello, I'm currently running Gentoo on my BananaPIs (M1). I'm using one as graphical Dashboard using DirectFB. Unfortunately, DirectFB is deprecated, not anymore supported and facing some compilation issue. Time to change. I tried with SDL configured with KMS but it's crashing. I don't want to install X because it will take ages to compile without any garanty it will work at the end. So ... probably the time to change. So, is DirectFB still supported on Armbian ? If not, is SDL2 working without X support. If not, with X support ? And if so, is X accelerated ? Thanks Laurent

Hi all, my first post here. Just a short question - is it possible to configure static IP address before the first boot by editing some configuration file in boot partition? I had to SSH to Orange Pi PC after installing Armbian_21.05.1_Orangepipc_buster_current_5.10.34.img in the network where there isn't DHCP and I set up the static IP address by connecting the SBC to the monitor and running nmtui. I could set the IP address by connecting the SBC directly to the computer by using LAN cable too but the easiest way would be if there is an option of configuring the static IP by editing some file in boot partition before the first boot.

What does determine the software available in softy, found in armbian-config? I easily installed NextCloudPi (ncp) using softy on a Buster based image for the OrangePi4. However it lacked an up to date python version needed for Home Assistant. I reinstalled Armbian using the Focal based image. Sadly softy did not list ncp as an option anymore. So I am a bit puzzled what software to expect from softy. The documentation ( https://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_Armbian-Config/#software ) did not mention anything about availability.

However he is busy, and I can appreciate he might not want to spend his free time talking about stuff he gets paid to do M-F. Then I also realized, certainly I am not the only one interested in Armbian in order to be doing such things. So I thought I would make a thread about this, instead, to open the discussion to a larger group people here in the broader community. I have my own thoughts, concerns, things I want to do, and have already done, but I thought I would make a more general thread where like …

I was thinking about buying small handheld with keyboard that could be used for small linux terminal, for some quick administrative & diagnostic work (login here, login there, put some commands, see webpage for help, etc). Something inexpensive with small qwerty keyboard. Something like PocketCHIP or this DYI on RPI http://www.3ders.org/articles/20170409-zero-terminal-raspberry-pi-device-is-a-diy-handheld-linux-pc-in-a-3d-printed-case.html Has anyone found or did such a thing? I wonder if I could use OPI/NanoPi/similar with 5-7 inch LCD (3:2 screen would be best IMHO), keyboard and LiPo battery from mobile, put it into 3-D printed case and run Armbian Desktop

I've been considering some options for experiments with electronic wind instruments and synthesizers, such as ZynAddSubFx, Fluidsynth. I've seen project Zynthian and they are running it on a Raspberry Pi 3, so that should be a safe choice, right? Although I'm not sure if they are using some mainstream Debian or something heavily adjusted. Also, for a wind instrument I hoped to find something smaller so I can even build it into the instrument itself; although I don't have my hopes high on that - I'm not sure if I'll find an SBC with enough power. I happen to be one of lucky (or not) backers of NextThingCo C.H.I.P. (now mostly out-of-busi…

As much as I love Armbian, I'm also interested in the Tinycore project - not as competition, but as a slightly different discipline with a different outlook. Rather than merely reproduce what can be found at the project site, I'll run over a few quick concepts. Maybe you'll find it interesting as well. In a nutshell - what makes it tiny is that it is basically a kernel, which then relies upon Busybox for the shell/file/unix utilities, including init. You add on as much or little as you like, although there is the total basic commandline / shell offering, or lightweight Xvesa gui desktop to get started. If you want a full blown X11 setup, you ca…

should we move this to one to: https://forum.armbian.com/forum/31-sd-card-and-power-supply/ as a pinned thread? Actually I think it should be 'saved' somewhere due to it explains the reasons and opinions why Armbian recommends to use Etcher and I think it would fit best there. It might be good to have this somewhere where it doesn't get lost due to new threads showing up. only recommend a tool which validates the Image after burning.. And at the moment, only etcher seems to do this.

dear community, let me express that i am very very lucky to be here - to be here and being a part of this great and awesome community. had good times working on Banana-Pi with some stuff like NAS things. But now i want to put on Raspi things that are parts of a IoT-Server. Therefore i am planning a headstart into docker! Docker is a tool that allows you to deploy applications inside of software containers. With Docker, images are used to configure the operating system and install an application's dependencies. Then from the image, containers are created to run the application. Well - running Docker on the Banana Pi seems to be very he…

Hello. I want to do HDMI-in to CSI with ADV7611. But have problems with DT overlay. I'm a newbie. I can build img with activated module adv7611 in menuconfig. Greetings, colleagues! When I connect a Wi-Fi USB adapter, the system assigns it a terrible interface name! I'm used to the fact that a well-bred Linux gives them names like wlan0, wlan1, etc... Armbian gives the name according to the following scheme: "wlx<MAC-ADDRESS>"! It is very uncomfortable! How I can persuade him to give names according to the traditional scheme? I am grateful for the answers on the essence of the question, Ogogon.

I just received a couple of these inexpensive LCD displays ($1.82 each shipped). They are very low power and look good. I've got them working on Arduino and will now be converting the code to Linux. If anyone is interested in these, let me know. I'll edit this post to add the github link when it's ready.

Hi every body I work with armbian on OPI & BPI fine but I'm looking for an improvment. First I install OS on SD, etc... but with limitations of R/W nb & sensibility if power disappears. I set a boot os SD and after switch on SSD connected on USB by moving directory and after discover a scipt whic do all automatically (thank's armbian). But customer calls me server don't restarts. I go on site (waste of time) burn a new SD etc.... and install a little eaton ups to prevent new failure. The server hosts a little bootstrap webserver, specific application server, cron scripts and nothing else. I need WIFI AP / Eth Gb & SSD and nothing else. I 'm searching for …

One month ago I got on my OPi Zero Plus2 H5 only up to 816Mhz with armbian. In the past I got on this device up to 1.1GHz (1080000 cpufreq) with older armbian builds. @5kft Told me thats because frequencys greater than 816Mhz require 1.2v and the OPi Zero Plus2 H5 isnt/couldnt switch(ing) and would only run at 1.1v. So it seems the cpu-table is now more conservative than before. Yesterday I did see the same behaviour and my "older" non-LTS NanoPi Neo2 (H5 also). Because in September I edited the cpu-table less conservative for the OPi Zero Plus2 H5 I did test this also on the non-LTS NanoPi Neo2 and it worked like on the OPi Zero…

Hi there! First of all thanks for all the great work that you do here! I did a fresh install of the latest nightly (5.26.170227) and I can't mount usb sotrage devices or acces their content. The OPiZero detects the device but it doens't mount it. I can see the device by running sudo fdisk -l However if I try to mount it manually I get this error: sudo mount /dev/sda /media/usb mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so. Hello Folks I'm after some advice. I've been an avid user of Raspberry Pi's for some time and just love how good they are for tinkering around with without breaking my larger main system, helps me learn all the time. I've recently started using my Raspberry Pi (3b+) to automate several task. I have three mono and two python services running, well I say running...... Essentially if any more than two of these need to process data together the pi can't cope. Top command tells me RAM usage is often 90-100% and the CPU running at between 115-130% before system starts to error out and SSH becomes inaccessible. I feel like I need a…

Maybe someone does know the old/historical SAM (Software Automatic Mouth) speech synthesizer for the Commodore 64? Today I did found the github-page with the source-code and compiled it on my Orange Pi R1 - using armbian For compiling the default SDL-version I had to install the 2 additional packages with apt - libsdl1.2-dev - libsdl1.2debian before SAM did compile on armbian. I also did try libsdl2-2.0.0 (and -dev), but this didnt worked well while compiling The souce-code could be found at: https://github.com/s-macke/SAM Hear here, how this OLD speech synthesizer sounds https://www.youtu…

Hello, I'm tearing my hair out. Help would be much appreciated. Initially, I installed Armbian on an SD card and successfully installed tvheadend and got the tuner to scan successfully. Great, or so I thought. Time to build my 'real' system on a eMMC. After many repeated builds, I cannot, for the life of me, get a successful scan. I'm using the 'predefined' network (UK Sutton Coldfield) which worked just fine before. I am running Armbian_20.08.1_Odroidn2_focal_current_5.8.5_desktop. Edit (can only post one per day). JMMC, what did I do different? Probably the order of things. I initially tried to install tvheadend via armbian-config, it didn't do anything. I in…

Hi all, unfortunately the USB power port on my Nanopi M4 V2 has broken off and I can't see a way to reattach it securely - it looks like it's just a push fit onto the board on 4 little tabs no solder involved no wonder it eventually fell off. Instruction on how to use wireless WoL (Wake on LAN) using RTL8189FS example in Armbian 23.x Bookworm (This wireless WIFI adapter is installed in Oprange Pi Lite/Oprange Pi Plus(2E)/Orange Pi Zero Plus/Oprange Pi PC Plus/Oprange Pi 2/etc...) 1. First of all we need to change the device tree configuration file dts file for our single board. The point is that for most WIFI drivers for SDIO interface there is a normal configuration of single board wake-up via interrupt and therefore there is no need to go into dts. In the driver for RTL8189FS (aka RTL8189FTV) there is NO such feature as "host-wake" interrupt and we will have to make small changes to wake up the…

I can clearly see the point for the maintainers, but there is an issue with the old boards. For example, I have a cubietruck which I would definitely like it to keep being supported, and I could probably help to maintain it within Armbian. Though I do have only one board which works 24/7. To my understanding, I can not be a maintainer, as I can't test new releases on a productive board. So If no one has two pieces, then the board can not be supported. In this case, I expect that current owners have to freeze kernel updates and keep the board for some more months - years, or try to test and use plain Debian or other distros. Is there any other alternative?

I'm having some success installing Debian on Raspberry Pi 3B+ and thought I'd proceed with making an Armbian build in order to have equivalent environments with other boards in my cluster. Is there any process/channel for this or should I just make a PR on the repo? What are some particular prerequisites I should be aware of that might block it from merging? I am very aware of armbian's stance on Raspberry Pi, and I understand you do not want to support it officially (if nothing else because you'd have difficulty handling the incoming clueless users), but I think there are a lot in the intended armbian audience who have Raspis lying around who would be ha…

I'm currently on the hunt for the cheapest decently reliable board to use for building a glusterfs cluster. Requirements are simple: GbE, SATA port, arm64, preferably low power. While helios64 is obviously the way to go for a NAS when it lands, it's totally overkill for a setup like this and I just realized that ODROID HC2 won't fly due to being 32-bit only. Most other 64-bit boards require expansion boards for SATA, which drags up the total cost. Finally I realized that the PC Engines APU boards fit all criteria, and come with what I understand to be performant GX-412TC CPUs. This one, for example, for 86EUR (maybe a bit on the pricey side, but I have…

Hi, I have a few questions about the NanoPi R1 system. 1) The (USB > TTL) debug serial port is that 3.3v or 5v? I need to get the correct adapter. 2) Hooking up a serial debug cable is there enough room to close the front plate? 3) Can the system run from eMMc and get software upgraded from the SD-Card? 4) I could not not find clear procedures for this. Am not familiar with OpenWRT. 5) Can the Ethernet port be used to talk to a P.C. running Windows (putty) or would the micro-USB to P.C. be better? 6) I would eventually use WiFi for remote access and updates. 7) Can the NanoPi R1 run Apache WEB server? 8) Can …

The CPU is at temp=45.5'C degrees. i think that we can do this with Python as well: import re, subprocess def check_CPU_temp(): temp = None err, msg = subprocess.getstatusoutput('vcgencmd measure_temp') if not err: m = re.search(r'-?\d\.?\d*', msg) # a solution with a regex try: …

I guess everyone knows that downloading distros in general takes a lot of bandwidth, same with armbian even thought the armbian distro i only a couple of hundreds of MB. so beside offering direct download why not start using p2p downloads like ubuntu and other distros do already in order to save bandwidth. We can use the openbittorrent.com public tracker - i already have a cubietruck which is powered 24/7 for my p2p needs so i would mind sharing some armbian distros via p2p. What do you guys think ?

I received the BPI M2 Ultra a couple of days ago (thanks to Nora Lee for the board) and worked a while on the BSP to learn and apply some of our changes on the ov5640 driver to be able to use Auto Focus and see if i could get Guvcview working on it. Here are some of my findings: * Working with the BSP is very similar to what we were used to on the Cubieboard A10/A20 era, those who worked with BSP at that time will feel very comfortable. * As usual, the BSP used arm-linux-gnueabi to compile the u-boot and kernel, i think is the Android way, and parses FEX to build a DTB. Hello all, After reading the Pine forums and having @tkaiser point out a few things I overlooked and/or missed I figured this might be a good place to ask a question that I've been trying to find the answer to. Please note that I'm not much of a hardware guy, I know the basics, enough to be dangerous. I am primarily a web applications developer and I use Raspberry Pis currently as testbeds for my server code. How do I accomplish this? Well I have (currently) a 7 Pi docker swarm based on hypriot's swarm image (I think it's a really cool package). Now for my question: I've been fine on CPU usage with only a few spikes, usually from an issue in the code I've written,…
