According to https://linux-sunxi.org/Optimizing_system_performance adding export XDG_CACHE_HOME="/dev/shm/.cache" to /etc/alternatives/x-session-manager does some good to desktop performance.

Hi, I have installed latest armbian linux OS into amlogix x96 max+ (S905X3) device. (op-hub link here) Would like to run chromium browser and play youtube videos etc., but I see videos are lagging, experiencing slowness and mostly it got crashed. Here is the command I used to run. chromium-browser --disable-software-rasterizer --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds --disable-gpu-driver-workarounds --disable-gpu-vsync --disable-features=UseOzonePlatform --disable-reading-from-canvas --enable-accelerated-2d-canvas --enable-accelerated-video-decode --enable-accelerated-mjpeg-decode --enable-features=VaapiVideoEncoder,VaapiVideoDecoder,CanvasOopR…

[ This thread started more or less here : And what do you think about porting to a cheap Android TVBox ] If anyone's interested we can discuss Armbian or linux for those rk3288 devices here. I'll start with mine (Q8 without front panel) which is the XT-Q8L-V10 from enybox (Chiptrip Q8 on gearbest or that other EKB328 on Aliexpress with front panel). I have a feeling that those boards are discontinued and being put on sale as end of stock. There are various other boxes with rk3288 which prices are pretty high (>80e) and were probably seen at some point as high end boxes. Other threads for that board can be found here…

I load "Armbian_5.34_S9xxx_Ubuntu_xenial_3.14.29_mate_20171104" on my MXQ PRO+ and after loading kernel and logging in it starts KODI Krypton. How can I disable KODI autostart and use complete Armbian system with MATE environment? There is no option on screen to choose.

Hi, I installed an Epson TM-T20 II without problem using the armbian image for z28 tvbox, rockchip rock64 alike board. When I plug it, it creates a /dev/usb/lp0 port that is enough to make the printer work. But I am unable to get the same working on the amlogic images. No port is created when I add the USB printer. Could it be missing UDEV rules? Or usblp driver not being loaded by the kernel? May someone give me a light? Those boxes are optimal for POS installations, and no support for ticket printing is a handicap. BTW, awesome work with all this project, it helped me a lot.

Hi there, As some of you (i guess) i want to update and upgrade to last debian and kernel version to test if it is better for my tv boxes (S905W, S912, S905X2) but before that i want to backup and possibly restore all the better way. Do someone have a hint for that ? Thanks I personnaly use portainer to manage docker images but never try it yet for disaster recovery or restoring data.

There are several variant of Tanix TX6 models listed here https://linux-sunxi.org/Tanix_TX6 and they mostly differ in RAM and eMMC sizes. There is reference to single dtb file there sun50i-h6-tanix-tx6.dtb for all these models. Will this dtb file work with all the models with the Single Armbian Image for RK+AML+AW (aarch64 ARMv8)? If not what changes would be needed in dtb files for these models? Thanks Rajesh

Hi guys, thanks in advance for helping. I flashed a usb (32G Lexar) with the image Armbian_20.10_Arm-64_buster_current_5.9.0.img.xz Next I booted up via the "Update&Backup" on a T95K Pro based on Amlogic S912 with 16G of internal storage and 2G of ram. After apt-get update and apt-get upgrade I decided to move Armbian from the USB to the internal storage (emmc) So I ran the file "install-aml.sh" getting this output: Start script create MBR and filesystem /dev/mmcblk0 Start backup u-boot default 4+0 records in 4+0 records out 4194304 bytes (4.2 MB, 4.0 MiB) copied, 4.45454 s, 942 kB/s Start create MBR and partittion Start rest…

Hey Everbody, as the title suggests, im considering adding an external HDD enclosure to my S905x2 box running armbian to use it as a budget NAS. I was considering using Openmedia Vault + 4 Bays Raid 5 via USB 3.0. Is there anything in principle that would speak against this? Another question i have: would i need to use an external enclosure with a built in raid controller or can i use any external enclosure and setup the raid via software control (in armbian)?? Also i am not sure if i should go for a cheaper non-brand or maybe something like a QNAP TR-004 that i could (re)use with a real qnap NAS at some point in the future. Anybody here who has…

@balbes150(sorry to @ you and hope youre keeping well!!) I have a Beelink GT King, which its motherboard lists as being version 2.2-S922X-4G-64G/A It has a terrible stability problem using meson-g12b-gtking.dtb (I have tried the pro file as well as others in case, but it wont boot with those). The problem I am experiencing is that when any high level of file transfers occur, the system freezes. The mouse etc locks up, the time/clock freezes at the time of the system hanging and the system drops off the network (stops responding to ping). Ive tried multiple revisions of Ubuntu that can be currently downloaded on Yandex, and been through …

Hello Guys I am new to this forum and I want to ask if there is any possibility to install armbian on T95Z Plus and how? Any suggestions?

Hello, I'm running ARMBIAN aarch64 on H96 Pro Plus (S912 with Mali T820) 3gb ram I have built new Mesa 20 with Panfrost support ,all is fine but NO OpenGL 3 support at all, just until 2. Is there a reason ? From what I know Mali T820 should be capable of GL3. Is there a new driver to be installed ? PS I boot using the following dtb meson-gxm-q200.dtb or meson-gxm-khadas-vim2.dtb Thanks

Hi, long story short I managed to flash a rom that killed my dual booting and my recovery, it now locks up on splash screen just after boot BUT i can still launch armbian from a SD card and only armbian (I tried a libreelec build which worked previously dual booting but no longer works). I am no where near knowledgeable enough to know where to start or if its even possible to flash a recovery through armbian? Any help will be hugely appreciated, thanks.

Hey I've managed to boot armbian on my box with S905X using meson-gxl-s905x-p212.dtb. The thing is that the screen resolution isn't properly setup. For some reason it detects Composite-1 when there's none and HDMI default is 1024x768. This isn't that big of an issue as I was able to use xrandr to fix it for my monitor. However when plugged to something bigger like TV the screen is very weird. Colors start to change color and screen has some weird artifacts. You can watch it here https://streamable.com/2615s A friend of mine has another box and it works perfectly out of the box. The TV is not the issue but rather the dtb. the meson-gxm-khadas-vim2.dtb also works but wifi…

Good Day I have a Mecool K3 Pro (S912 - 3GB) which includes an internal DVB tuner. I have installed images from balbes150 ( https://yadi.sk/d/pHxaRAs-tZiei) The latest device tree source (dts) for meson-gxm-s912-kiii-pro.dtb includes the dvb config. So the K3 boots fine without any problems, except there is no dvb interface (/dev/dvb). So I need to load the kernel modules for the AVL6862 tuner, but it is not included in the images. To compile my own modules, I can only find source drivers here: https://github.com/afl1/dvb_tv-aml https://github.com/avlogic/AVL6862 but I am unable to successf…

I opened this theme to support running ArmbianTV on 32-bit ARM models. To date, there are first results on launching ArmbianTV on the Rockchip rk3288 and AML s8xx platform (in the future, by analogy with aarch64, I plan to switch to a common image for all 32-bit models of TV boxes). The link to the images https://yadi.sk/d/85ZvBuXyyenf_A MEGA (name -rk3288) https://mega.nz/#F!j9QSDQSQ!6WpasOlbZYIInfw6yo4phQ Now you can download the latest versions of images and DEB packages from the official Armbian resource via the link. https://users.armbian.com/balbes150/ Recommended startup pro…

Just wanted to report that I have been experimenting compiling the kernel for Oleg's various Armbian images for S9XXX TV boxes and have managed to compile and boot mainline kernel, but this required a small change in Oleg's S905_autoscript in /boot. Basically I just added a couple of lines that bootm the uImage if it is present. If there is no uImage it proceeds to booti Oleg's zImage: setenv boot_start_ml bootm ${kernel_addr} ${initrd_addr} ${dtb_mem_addr} if fatload mmc 0 ${kernel_addr} uImage; then if fatload mmc 0 ${initrd_addr} uInitrd; then if fatload mmc 0 ${env_addr} uEnv.ini; then env import -t ${env_addr} ${filesize};fi; if fatload mmc 0 ${dtb_m…

Hi. I am trying to connect a bluetooth speaker that also has a microphone to armbian. When using it as a plain speaker via A2DP, it works fine. However when i switch it to HSP/HFP in order to use the microphone, i get a lot of static, random crackling and very low volume on both the microphone and the speaker. Using a usb bluetooth adapter for this. I've used the same adapter + speaker on a different machine (x86 running lubuntu 19.10) and i did not have any static at all when using HSP/HFP (sound was indeed a bit lower quality that A2DP but nothing major). Also i could not get the speaker to switch to HSP/HFP with the default audio tool in armbian desktop, nor on …

Hi I installed my HA system on an android box Amlogic S912 Octa core, with armbian, everything works fine until i restart the box. Box: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bqeel-Android-Bluetooth-Amlogic-Output/dp/B078MHCTWT After restarting the box I can no longer access the HA, but I can access the box with putty. For everything to work again, I have to delete docker, HA and re-install everything again, but as soon as I remove the power, I am again without access by brower. I think the problem is in some service that is not on startup, but I have no experience with linux and I don’t know how to solve this problem Can anyone…

Good Day everyone! I have 4 of these Kata Boxes lying around the house, and due to the poor firmware of which was never updated, I was hoping to have Armbian installed to that I could place these near my DAC's to become essentially DLNA devices (Of which I hope will be painless). However, in trying to boot armbian, I have no luck whatsoever. In Libreelec, I am able to boot fine from the SD Card no problem, and since I have an opportunity to SSH, I wanted to know the device tree it was using by running the command "cat /proc/device-tree/le-dt-id," the result of was "gxbb_p200 LibreELEC:~ #." With that information, I've used the same dtb located in the dtb folder of …

In the mainline kernel, meson-gxl-s905d-phicomm-n1.dts has been around for a long time, but there has been a problem of high CPU load. I fixed it and it has been stable for several months, so it is shared for reference . I think the cause of the problem is that the IRQ is wrong. We are currently at a breaking point where cheap Android TV boxes become powerful enough and viable enough to do the following while running Linux: 1. Be a server: self-hosting data, fediverse, home NAS 2. Be a TV box: 1. web browser, 2. other multimedia options, 3. games 3. Be a makeshift PC replacement (run office applications, photo editing, etc) Concerning #1: If you have followed the news then you have witnessed that censorship is increasing and that the nature of it is most alarming. Over the next years, big tech and politics-driven manipulation of online information will only get worse, until the internet essentially devolves int…

I figured I’d start a generic chat for this as I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to know other peoples experiences on this. I’ve bought and run armbian on a number of boxes (x96, Trongle, a95x) and always run into the same problem, WiFi. I know I am not the only one and I know the reasoning behind it (too many chips to support) But… Has anyone got a build working with WiFi support? Ideally on a board less than $50? Amlogic, Rockchip, anything? I’ve never failed to get other aspects working, except WiFi (and Bluetooth) I know it must be possible, Android builds never seem to fail with WiFi support. …

Hello all! I have one of these (possibly!) a sunvell R69 tv- box (it says R69 on top and has a green line going around it). I did try to check on its built-in android to see what CPU is in this box; I couldn't really find a 100% answer but it is either an H2+ or H3. I did download and manage to get to work one of the armbian images (but I cannot remember which one it was) but then later used the micro sd for other purposes. I then tried downloading the armbian image for the orange pi one (I can't remember if that was the one I chose earlier; I've seen others use this image for 'a' R69 and some say it works) and writing it but my R69 refuses to boot…

Hi everyone! Firstly sorry if this question is too basic or already had a solution in other topic, but I couldn't found the answer I'm looking for and I'm new to Armbian. But let's go... We have a standalone system here that plays videos all day long. That kind of "internal TV" from the company, where they put news and other things someone judge it's interesting. It works pretty well so far for roundly 10 years. Thing is: it relies on regular PCs! As you may know, they're big and has bigger energy consumption than this amazing TV Box. During a meeting someone came up with the idea of replacing it for something sm…

Greetings. I just entered this hobby tonight and read up some on amlogic boxes in these forums. Im trying to boot armbian to a A95xF3 air with the amlogic s905x3 chip off a SD card but hangs at error message "fail to map file in aml_autoscript". I guess I have the wrong dtb file configured in ext-linux, I have not tried all dtb files yet but now I have wasted so much time so I try to ask here if there is any easy way booting the amlogic s905x3 chip. There is a couple of youtube videos using files for Rk3399 from 2019 and perhaps they might work as Im not lucky with the last posted ubuntu 20.20 images ? I did read there is security issues with t…

Settled here on using the AmiLogic S912 for my KODI boxes replacing the current Aopen Digital Engines. Purchased another AmiLogic S912 here to be utilized as a headless automation server running: 1 - Mono 2 - Homeseer 3 3 - Home Assistant - docker 4 - Node Red 5 - MQTT (and be a Mosquitto Server). Hi, So I have an MXQ S805 box. I installed Armbian_5.44 S805 Debian Server on SD card, got the right DTB to work and its working well. I have run the install.sh file to install to NAND and that has gone well too However, when I reboot, it goes into a weird loop that basically does not allow it to boot right. I encountered this loop previously when I was trying to identify the right DTB for my box, so I am confused that much more. What am I missing? Help. Thanks.

I propose to discuss the use of TV boxes (SbC) as a multifunctional complex that can be used as a PC and a universal media center. I've been testing a lot of different models lately that may qualify for this role. Later I will publish General notes, which I got on different models of processors and specific models of TV boxes.

Hello, this is my first post after lot of reading in this forum. First of all, my goal: use the M16 TVBOX as Think Client to use as RDP client. M16 TVBOX spec: Android 7.1 S905X RAM 2GB Space 16GB PCB: M16_V8.0 171109 The problem would be solved, except that for functional reasons, I have to install Armbian on internal memory, replacing Android. I've tested Armbian_5.77_Aml-s905_Ubuntu_bionic_default_5.0.2_desktop_20190401.img.xz successfully, boot from SD, no errors, installed Remmina, RDP comes up. Too good to be true. Too bad I can't install it on the internal memory…

Hello, i`ve successfully started Armbian_19.11.5_Arm-64_eoan_current_5.5.0-rc6_desktop_20200127 on my A95X F2 device with meson-g12b-odroid-n2.dtb. I know that it is not correct dtb which i should use for my box, but it is the only one that worked. If i use meson-g12a-x96-max-rmii.dtb i get stuck on this: http:// I also have got the original android dtb file. But i dont know how to add it here.

As I have been watching the development of Armbian for TV boxes, there is one area that my needs haven't been addressed yet. And since this is open source that means I needed to read a lot of posts and get into the code to understand how things are working. I have been doing that over the last six months or so and wanted to report back on what I am now doing to solve my issue as it may help others. I have a number of TV boxes running as headless servers for a variety of projects. Once I install Armbian on them I then get OS updates through ubuntu (I am using Ubuntu Bionic on my boxes). That gives me bug fixes and patches for the software running on these b…

I've been trying to activate the framebuffer on a Armbian Debian-server image. The framebuffer doesn't exist on a server image but I need to be able to install it. So I thought, what about DirectFB. I've been searching the web for instructions on installing DirectFB. I need to install it and not have to burn a new image (I'm not capable). I just noticed that if I go to /boot/debian i find all the libdirectfb files. Can somebody show me (step by step) how I could install DirectFB or directly activate the framebuffer using these files? What files (including directories) to install, scripts to modify, etc. Any help would be…

Hi, a quick start for this TV Box. There are several comments on the 905x3 thread but, for the sake of easiness, I've created this blank new thread. My experience with H96 Max X3: (1) Downloaded (from yandex) and burned Armbian Armbian_20.05.3_Arm-64_buster_dev_5.7.0-rc2-next-20200424_desktop.img (2) Copied the /dtb/meson-sm1-sei610-ethfix.dtb into the SD card and modifed uEnv.txt to load that dtb and uncommented the 'APPEND' entry on aml s9xxx section (3) Made a copy of u-boot.sd into u-boot.ext (4) Booted with 'the toothpick method', armbian started, basic setup, there you go... perfect armbian desktop (5) I did a copy of bo…

Hello, I'm trying to follow the instructions here: https://forum.armbian.com/topic/2419-armbian-for-amlogic-s905-and-s905x-ver-544/ Downloaded the image Armbian_5.99_Aml-g12_Ubuntu_bionic_default_5.3.0_desktop_20191110.img.xz and burned it to a 16GB sd card, put it in a tanix tx3 mini box and applied power. It booted Android as usual. The I opened Update& Backup app, which didn't even find the SD card. Then I rebooted to recovery, but that too didn't help. Not sure how to continue. Please help. TIA

Got a TV Box off amazon. Not real happy with the features as it comes. So I thought I'd give a try at booting to Armbian and see how that performs. I have no idea what the hardware is so I'm not sure where to begin at getting a good bootable SD card set up. The label on the box just says "TV BOX", nothing that I see to ID the thing. Where do I go to see the info I need to start building a usable boot? This is the device I have: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MJ13MWD

I've been planning to try out Armbian on my MXQ Pro 4K 5G (2/16GB) which has Allwinner H3 and originally runs a rooted version of Android 7.1.2. My TV box had an issue recently and I had to flash the firmware for Sunvell R69 to it (no original firmware files found just yet), everything works except Wi-Fi and improper RAM and ROM readings (1/8GB). I've read that there was an official support for Beelink X2 before. Since I do have an Allwinner H3, I decided to give Armbian a try. I've searched for the firmware online, but all my youtube/google searches results leads to https://www.armbian.com/beelinkx2/ which appears to not host the file anymore. Clicking either Armbian Bio…

Hey all, trying to throw a Linux distro on an Android TV Box I found at Goodwill. Not too much info on what company makes it, what the specs are etc. -- it's unfortunately too old to connect to the Google Play Store at this point (running android Jellybean). The only markings on it are on the top of the case saying RBOX, but I have yet to find any other device like it on any site. It's a red and black square case, for what that's worth. I also haven't been able to boot to the BIOS/bootloader menu, even holding the reset button -- all that happens is the little Android mascot says its loading then after a few seconds it "dies" (red triangle-shaped …

Does any one have used the UART over SD port ? Thanks,

For the few that keep an eye to the Amlogic CPU Boxes i have being unable to even bootup Armbian on my X96 Max+ So i took a look around ..... To my surprise i found quite some activity on both Rockchip & Allwinner and makes me scratch my head If i am not mistaken Rockchip has done some work on providing drivers but .... The Amlogic boxes carry a far better price/performance ratio or am I wrong ? Other than that i took a quick look around and the alternatives for e.g. S905X3 are quite expensive or way too old to compete,,,,am I missing something ?

Hi, I plan on running octoprint on my Amlogic S912 china android box. Now I need to connect a filament runout sensor via gpio, in a octoprint plugin one specifies the used pins. Unfortunately my device has no dedicated gpio header built in, so I want to ask: Is there a way (that maybe works easily with armbian) to have gpio somehow? Like some usb stick with gpio on it that can forward gpio in and output? I have a pi zero lying around and found this https://github.com/raspberrypi/gpioexpander/wiki where some pigpio library is mentioned. But no idea if or how this could work on an Amlogic box. Any ideas?

Hi, I successfuly use Armbian on a beelink TV box but I can't install it on eMMC/NAND. So running out of the SDcard will eventually end up crashing . So I'm Looking for a cheap / realiable / no hassle TV Box to replace it. So what box would you recommend, around 25$ budget, which works fine "out of the box" to install armbian When answering please tell which dtb you are using with your box. Thanks.

Variants of alteration of the cooling system. For example, three models MVR9 (rk3328), MX10 (rk3328) x96mini (s905w). In the body, above the radiator of the processor, a large hole is made and on the sides of the body a large hole is made for the free passage of air. On x96mini had to add a new radiator. Note need necessarily two holes, one for air intake, the second for exit. This is a very common mistake TV box manufacturers, they sometimes make only one type of holes, which is not enough for the normal operation of the cooling system. The air must pass freely through the body. The direction of air supply for TV boxes is optimal from the hole on th…

I have begun to make some changes to the TV Box 'Club' area. The overall goal is to provide more useful information to users and reduce the support workload of answering the same questions over and over again. To that end there is now a FAQ forum on the menu. While it is currently empty and just a place holder it should provide a centralized location for TV Box information over time. The second new addition is the forum titled 'TV Boxes running Armbian'. The idea here is to provide a maintained list of current information with links to the details for boxes reported by the community to be successfully running armbian. Both…

Hello everyone, I have two S905x3 boxes happily running Balbes150 20.08 Armbian build. I am trying to figure out how to make a working backup of the eMMC. Normally in a situation like this I would use Clonezilla, but that doesn't boot on these arm64 boxes. Should I make a bootable USB with one of Balbes150 images and use "dd" on /dev/mmcblk2 to an image file? Would I be able to then restore that image file with "dd" to another S905x3 box and have it boot?

Hey folks - spend my money... Hello, I find armbian awesome and my problem is because of the manufacurers. I basically want to play accelerated video (because I need 4k). I tried amlogic, but it is not still supported (https://linux-meson.com/hardware.html) the status is partial for the chips I tried. I don't what "partial" means but I can hardware decoding. I also tried allwinner, several chips. In this page https://linux-sunxi.org/Sunxi-Cedrus I see that it is supported but I tried with new kernels, old kernels... Nothing worked. I always reach a point that stops me (like segmentation fault when loading sunxi modules, system freeze when using vdpau, compilation errors due inco…

Hello everyone I'm posting here what I did to run Armbian on a 4G LTE EM90 box. The image I'm using is armbian_5.37_S9xx_Debian_stretch_3.14.29_icewm_20171226. I extracted the dtb.img from the rooted android, I had to remove the beginning of the file to make it work. If you don't cut the file until you reach 0xD0 0D FE ED, you will get a magic number error when decompiling and Armbian will not boot with your fresh DTB. I couldn't find anything on the web, I looked everywhere. With the dd command I can of course create a complete image of the eMMC anywhere, even on a network path, but I can't find anything that allows me to do what the "nand-sata-install.sh" script does, which formats the eMMC and populates it with all the contents of the MicroSD, appropriately adapting some files needed for booting. It would be many useful to be able to do the exact opposite as well, i.e. clone eMMC to MicroSD, which would be useful to have a bootable backup with all the customizations performed on the eMMC, without having to go through the process of creating an image file. I tried modifying the …

I know that this topic actually concerns all ARM boards, but I've chosen to post in TV-boxes, because they really need some kind of harddisk attachment, especially when used as servers (so you don't wear down the SD-card). Some time ago, Western Digital made a USB-drive, which was specially designed for the Raspberry Pi. https://www.wdc.com/en-ie/search-results.html?q=pidrive Personally I'm using two 1TB WD-blue with my CubieBoard2, because the CubieBoard2 has buit-in S-ATA interface. But TV-boxes usually don't have S-ATA, so the PiDrive is an option worth considering. What's special about this drive ? At a glance, nothing really. It's…

Hello, As far as I read, there are not many (<100$) arm64 board to run linux armbian, kodi, maybe plex, capable of playing without issues 4k videos. I think if I'd like to make tvbox the best choice in terms of video quality would be using android, right? Thing is I hate android, I love linux. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is there any good board around 50-80 $ to make a linux tv box? I'd just use it as an HTPC for playing video with a 4k tv attached to it and maybe some simple home media server. Thank you
