  1. I've taken peeks at threads related to hardware decoding (of H.264 and HEVC, mainly) on Allwinner and Rockchip platforms on and off, sometimes dabbled in trying and failing to implement solutions recommended there. Being a complete amateur, I find the topic very opaque and confusing, with various different components that need to interface with each other, be patched in sync, and sometimes change drastically between kernel versions, etc. Today I sat down and read up on these subjects, scouring wikis, documentation, this forum, and assorted other sources to try and understand how this works. In this post I will attempt to compile what I've learned on the different software…

  3. Armbian implements some basic 'system logging' at every startup and shutdown and contains a little utility to provide this collected information combined with some more useful debug info from user installations. All that's needed is executing 'sudo armbianmonitor -u' (or armbian-config --> Software --> Diagnostics) and then all this support related information is uploaded to an online pasteboard service automagically (see example output) How to interpret this wall of text? The output is best read from bottom to top since the most important information is collected during upload: At the bottom /proc/interrupts contents to chec…

I did try to upgrade to Stretch but I was missing some repositories. Now I'm trying to install a fresh Armbian Stretch version but on first boot SSH is not enabled. How can I configure armbian ? I cannot connect keyboard/screen. Maybe there is another way to do it ? Other armbian/debian images ? Does anyone have a solution ?

  16. EDIT: This is NOT about a (hidden) backdoor but just a local privileges escalation that affects one single 3.4 kernel variant for 2 Allwinner SoCs. In case you came here through lurid headlines please read this comment here first and help stop spreading further BS like "all Allwinner devices contain a hidden backdoor" -- the code has been found since Allwinner could be convinced to open their Github repos in the past so everyone is able to audit their Android kernel source! It has been brought to our attention two days ago on 2016-04-30 in linux-sunxi IRC that Allwinner's 3.4 legacy kernel for H3/A83T/H8 contains a nasty local privileges escalation. Any process …

What about the new Banana PI M2 ultra ? Is it a real SATA controller ? or just one more that is channeled through the USB ? And is this machine likely to be supported by Armbian ? It in short seems to be a little overpriced and the eMMC storage to be to little. And the M3 left a bit bad taste in my mouth, but if it is Sata that gives more speed than USB and if it will be Armbian supported then I might give them another go.

  43. We will be configuring in a mode that allows both NFSv3 and NFSv4 clients to connect to access to the same share. Q. What are the benefits of an NFS share over a SAMBA share? A. This would take an article in itself! But as a brief reasoning, In a closed network (where you know every device), NFS is a fine choice. With a good network, throughput it disgustingly fast and at the same time less CPU intensive on the server. There are a lot of applications that support NFS "Out of the box" KODI being a common example. It's very simple to set up and you can toggle readonly on shares you don't need to be writeable. It only gets complicated if you want to start l…

Since the 23.08 upgrades were released (thank you again to team Armbian!), I noticed that the "default" image for the Orange Pi 3 LTS is Armbian 23.8 Bookworm. The minimal CLI image weighs in at 267Mb. My OPi3LTS SBCs are all running Armbian Jammy 23.08. The minimal CLI image weighs in at 195Mb. My understanding is that Jammy is Ubuntu (22.04.3 LTS), and Bookworm is Debian (12.0). But also Ubuntu Jammy is based on Debian Bookworm/sid. My questions are as follows: 1. What goes …

I wonder if any work is being done in that direction. Every browser i tried has some sort of issues, that makes it less than usable on H3 devices. -epiphany/midori: both work decently, but lock up after some time with 25% cpu usage (could be a webkit1 issue ?) -chromium: slow and apparently absent from repos -firefox: works ok, but quite slow -net surf: very fast and stable, but not up to date for web standards (probably what makes it fast in the first place) Am i missing any browsers here ? I propose we optimize one of those, that would work best on out allwinner devices in a similar fashion of what raspberry team did with epiphany. I'm sure lots of folks…

So I thought about, what is necessary to protect 'my cloud', which may be not the first interest for a hacker. So I tested Kodi playing different demanding video files (H256), and it works smoothly, without crashing at all. So far the most stable media center option. But yes, we have no ethernet. So I was wondering how could we load the basics drivers from the Xulong image, into the PineH6 one. So I browsed for hours (because Im not at all familiar with this android weird partitions system, and with the OS itself). First I realized both Pine H6 and OPiOnePlus use the same ethernet controller (the realtek 8211). Then I went for the schematics, to actually check if the realtek chip was connected to the H6 the same way on both boards. Which it seems to be for…

Since I was looking up which boards would make a proper NAS and home automation hub, I figured I might as well summarize the options in a post. Requirements for a proper NAS: Gigabit Ethernet SATA that is not a crappy USB->SATA chip Armbian-supported That last one is because otherwise the options are much more numerous and scattered, and the previous requirements become vague (e.g., you could even just take out a netbook's motherboard and run it standalone). Also, you could use an A80 board (USB 3.0) but I believe none are supported by Armbian, same goes for R40 (has SATA), so this leaves us with these A20 boards that also have GbE: _______________________…

Btrfs is also good for error checking and can provide cheap easy data redundancy. How does booting work on my BPI M2? How can I change the target root partition? What has to be on /boot (ext4) and what can be on / (btrfs)? Along the same lines, is it possible to boot off of a USB device either directly or indirectly (Small SD with bootloader and /boot→ USB large root device)? Is there some documentation or good keywords to learn about how booting works in the ARM world?

Following a successful deployment of an MCP2515 SPI to CAN device with the great help of https://forum.armbian.com/topic/3588-can-bus-support-orange-pi-zero/ I’ve been looking into using an SPI to CANFD device with the orangePi R1 (H2+ based). (CANFD allows greater bitrate than the “regular” CAN) I am looking into using the driver made for the mcp2517fd/mcp2518fd, which has been submitted but not yet linux mainlined: https://github.com/msperl/linux-rpi/tree/upstream-v5.0-rc3-mcp25xxfd-v6.11/drivers/net/can/spi/mcp25xxfd This driver seems to be functional with the raspberry pi, and an example of PCB and associated overlay can be seen here: https://github.com/…

Hello, I run my program system as a service in console mode, so no login is needed. The Linux system starts up almost quietly after changes in boot.scr. The only "small" thing that needs a solution is the login prompt. How can I prevent login prompt from appearing? I've tried some autologin options I found for different Linux systems, but they didn't work for me. Any suggestion?
