  1. If you use a SIP Voip client on your phone or computer, you can use the sip protocol and scripting to monitor your Armbian board. I'm using Ubuntu Xenial, but other versions should work as well. I have the Linphone client on my phone and I use the free Linphone SIP service. Linphone.org hosts a free SIP service that allows users to make audio or video calls using SIP addresses via the domain sip.linphone.org. You can also send text messages. SIP requires an internet data connection, and my phone is connected via WIFI most of the time except when I'm commuting, so I set up my monitoring chron jobs on the Armbian device to run at times when…

  3. With this commit I added 7-zip benchmark reporting to Armbian now. Will be available after next updates and with next batch of new images. Why not recommending to just do an 'apt install p7zip ; 7zr b'? Since 'fire and forget' benchmarking is always BS. You need some monitoring in parallel to know whether your system was really idle and at which clockspeeds the CPU cores were operating (throttling occuring or not?). Most recent 7-zip contains an own routine to 'pre-heat' the system prior to starting the benchmark (to let cpufreq scaling switch from low clockspeeds to highest ones and e.g. on Intel systems let the system enter TurboBoost modes). Th…

Here are the instructions to run Htop remotely using a web browser. I often use Htop to monitor the health of my boards and servers (amd64). 6. This is not so much a 'Tutorial' as it is an overview (and/or starting point for further research) of some things to consider when setting up a file server, some in general and then some more particular to SBC. In the simplest case, you could attach almost any drive to almost any board, by any number of ways, and you have yourself 'a file server.' However with even a small amount of effort, there are so many better ways to do things nowadays. We have a lot more interesting hardware choices, advanced filesystems, etc. and so those are mostly what I want to talk about. But first, some context. Dedicated distros vs simple directory shari…

  7. This will cause update-grub to add the following a devicetree line to all menu entries. This example is based on Debian Trixie's grub-efi. This example will expect dtb directories (or links) to be in the /boot directory, using the convention that I've seen Armbian use. Here is an example of a /boot directory listing for (pure) Debian Trixie with two kernels: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 336036 Aug 27 04:10 config-6.12.43+deb13-arm64 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 343394 Sep 6 12:48 config-6.16.3+deb13-arm64 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 42 Sep 20 16:17 dtb -> ../usr/lib/linux-image-6.16.3+deb13-arm64/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 Sep 20 16:17 dtb-6.12.43+deb13-…

Thanks to ASUS, I got my hands on one of these after seeing what appeared to be a giant heat sink fin integrated into the top of the case. This case may be of interest to non-Tinker owners as well, it is not designed like the equivalent Pi cases with a fixed aluminum stud touching the SoC. Instead it has a small aluminum block that has an adhesive side, and a thermal pad side, and is clamped down onto the processor by putting the two halves together. This allows some freedom on the location of the SoC relative to the lid. First off, same nice packaging the Tinker owners are familiar with: The case itself is quite …

I thought, my requirements for a media server would be quite low/easy to fulfill: smooth playback of 1080p movies clean multichannel sound access to firefox After testing all avaliable images on the rockpi, it was clear, that actually only LE offers exciting movie enjoyment. I had to realize, that my ideas are quite demanding after all. So it was clear, I had to get the driver from radxa working on LE. Why? well, hardware design of rockpi4 with extension HATs is someho…

I use the OrangePi Zero. But it is similar to other model. It's very simple: 1) use the mainline 4.11.x kernel 2) enable the uart1 and pps-gpio in /boot/armbianEnv.txt like this : overlays=uart1 pps-gpio param_pps_pin=PA7 3) edit /etc/default/gpsd to use ttyS1 as gps device # Devices gpsd should collect to at boot time. # They need to be read/writeable, either by user gpsd or the group dialout. DEVICES="/dev/ttyS1" # Other options you want to pass to gpsd GPSD_OPTIONS="-G -n " 4) If you use ntpd, edit /etc/ntpd.conf like this: # GPS Serial data reference server 127.127.28.0 minpoll 4 maxpoll 4 prefe…

In this tutorial we build a custom .config for OrangePiOnePlus board, eg: to remove blutooth, WiFi and or USB3.x support since the hardware is not onboard, alternatively you can adjust settings to your needs which is not in the default .config. The section mentions, if file " userpatches/linux-$KERNELFAMILY-$KERNELBRANCH.config " exists, it will be used instead of default one from " config ". This means for the OPiOnePlus : " linux-sunxi64-dev.config " should be created, but please note "dev" is just one of the three options available, which are: " current ", " legacy " and " dev " The default config files are located in : " /armbian/config…

  13. Hi all. The Panfrost GPU driver is finally starting to mature for Mali G52 on the Odroid N2/N2+ and Khadas VIM3. It doesn't perform great yet. But this will improve with time. In this video I show how to activate the panfrost driver on Armbian mainline. To activate panfrost : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade sudo reboot Khadas VIM3 support is in the making. This also works on any other mainline image. Greetings.

  14. Hello, I am trying to connect an enc28j60 ethernet port to spi0.0 on an orange pi pc, running armbian (debian stretch 4.19.5). 16. I'm going to use an orange Pi zero to make a thermostat adjustable via lan; do you know how to point me to some easy to apply project? I tried several projects, with ds1820b sensors and relais card for raspberry, but I have problems for example with the libraries RPi.GPIO because they do not match those OPi.GPIO. I can currently turn the relays on and off with an android app or via terminal command.

  17. Hi all. I've just finished a long video special where I talk about all my SBCs. In the order how I got them. I show the specs of all of them. Say what I like, what's bad about them. What I use them for. What SBC is best for your goal. Here's my video, I hope you enjoy it. Greetings, NicoD. P.S. : Pictures of anyone else their collection? 23. Hi there, I have a RockPi 4b running Arabian with Ubuntu bionic. I mainly use the board to contact it online over ssh/vnc/rdp to work in spyder and texmaker. Quite often the connection is slow however. Therefore I am thinking of changing the system such that i can just bring it on the road and connect it using a local network with the usbc cable outlet of the iPad and a USB port on the rockpi. The reason i would like to connect over a cable is speed and not having to use the WiFi so that both devices can still easily connect to a WiFi network for internet access. I have found many solutions where iPads are connected to raspberry pi’s. These solutions all have …

  25. Hello reader I will report here about my experience to watch Netflix as written in the title. To do so, I got a current LE image from @balbes150 (thank you). You may be asking the same question as I do (did), why using the image from balbes and not the official one from the download page ? It is actually quite simple, balbes integrates the latest Kernel for his LE builds. While on a x86 system the kernel isn't so interesting, it is on ARM systems, because a lot of the development happens 1 or 2 year later of the release of the SoC. I have asked him about the different versions he offers for Le Potato: All versions…

  26. Hi, To enable the armbianmonitor to show information on the running system on the serial console, I used to have a custom startup script, called from /etc/rc.local. After some time, I thought it was more neat to have this automatically started (and stopped) for login sessions that are started on serial consoles/terminals. This lead (led?) me to the following systemd unit file: [Unit] Description=armbianmonitor on ttyS2 Requires=serial-getty@ttyS2.service After=serial-getty@ttyS2.service After=getty.target BindsTo=serial-getty@ttyS2.service [Service] Type=idle ExecStartPre=-/bin/sleep 10 ExecStart=/usr/bin/armbianmonitor -m TTYPath=/dev/ttyS2 Standa…

  27. A very hackish port exists of this Raspberry PI RGB LED Matrix Library which works for Allwinner H3 devices. This works by bit-banging 14 GPIO pins simultaneously to achieve about a 10Mhz throughput / 100fps refresh rate. Refer to here: https://github.com/mrfaptastic/opi-allwinner-h3-rgb-led-matrix I managed to easily get up and running using an Orange PI. Refer to the README of the github repository.

  28. Hello, I'm new here and do not quite understand the sub-forums here but hopefully this is the right one. I got an Orange pi ONE running 4.19 RT kernel with Armbian buster. I was testing out the GPIO capabilities of the H3 SoC without any libraries and got only 1.67 Mhz at best(which is ironically the same as WiringPIOP) with some task interrupt issues. #define INP_GPIO(g) *(unsigned int *)(gpio+0x04) &= ~(7 << (((g) % 10) * 3)) //I did not thoroughly check if the mapping is okay #define OUT_GPIO(g){\ *(unsigned int *)(gpio+0x04) &= ~(6 << (((g) % 8) * 4));\ *(unsigned int *)(gpio+0x0…

  29. I own a few Android TV boxes that have poor thermal designs that are prone to overheating when under sustained load. This can either cause your device to significantly slow down or shut down entirely. This can be fixed by cutting a hole in the bottom on your TV box above the SoC and sticking a small USB fan on it. In my case I am using a AC Infinity 40mm x 20mm USB Fan that cost me £10. CH340-fan-control is a python script to only activate my TV boxes USB fan when required by using a USB relay module. I'd expect somebody (or several somebodies) have already wrote a similar script for the same device but I failed to find it so here is my effort at fixing this c…

  30. I got my hands on a "Set 9" Orange Pi Lite + GC2035 camera a while back and I've finally been able to put together a self-contained object detection device using Tensorflow, without sending any image data outside for processing. Basically, its a python Flask application that captures frames from the camera using a GStreamer pipeline. It runs them through a Tensorflow object detection model and spits out the same frame with extra metadata about objects it found, and renders a box around them. Using all four cores of the H2 it can do about 2-3 fps. The app keeps track of the count of all object types it has seen and exposes the metrics in prometheus format, for easy…

Java UIO provides high performance Java interfaces for Linux Userspace IO. Java UIO was built from the ground up to use modern kernel APIs, libraries and code generation techniques to provide a best of breed cross platform approach. It does not make sense to recreate the wheel like so many other IO libraries. JDK 17 LTS is supported out of the box. I've been committing code to U8g2 that utilizes the same userspace code at the C level and dramatically improved the performance of HW/SW SPI and I2C in the arm-linux port. I also made the arm-linux port thread safe and multi display capable (you can use this in C as well obviously). It made sense to add modularizat…

Hi, I startet with conky-grapes from TwisterOS, which I wanted to tweak to show cpu frequency for every core. But that showed, that conky is not able to do consistent text formatting, so I startet to write my own theme. As I like the armbian title font, I asked for the font, but it turned out, that it did not look as good as expected. So I discarded that variant and stayed with the previous selected fonts. Main purpose is to use that monitor in home cinema, therefore I used bigger fonts, which are readable from distance. Feedback is welcome.

  47. So, I was doing some reading on how to control PWM fans under Linux. The lm-sensors package has a fancontrol script, but pwmconfig doesn't recognize the PWM devices on my NanoPi M4V2. There's also this repository which has a pwm-fan service, which might be the same one that Friendly Desktop uses (referenced in this post). But then I found this rather interesting link from the Kobol guys: https://wiki.kobol.io/helios4/pwm/. Apparently the Linux kernel has built-in thermal control and user space scripting isn't even required, just editing the Device Tree. But as we have easy user overlays for the RK3399, let's go ... tparys@m4v2:~$ sudo ar…

  51. On some devices (mostly headless) like Pine A64 LTS and other SBCs with Allwinner SoCs is Lima blacklisted by default or not supported by distribution. For getting Lima work, you need to use distribution, which have already Mesa with Lima support (Mesa 20.1+) (or compile latest Mesa from sources, but this is not included in this tutorial). At the moment of writing, it's Ubuntu Focal and Debian Bullseye. I personally prefer Debian more, so in my case, download Debian Bullseye image for your SBC and burn it into the board. After booting into your board, find file named /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-NAMEOFYOURSBC.conf (for me it's blacklist-pinea64-lts.conf…

Hi All, I am trying to use a 4x4 matrix keypad on Orange pi GPIO ,I am connecting the keypad with 8 GPIO's 4 GPIOs for rows, 4 for coloumns ,the problem I am facing is when I try to test the keypad few keys are read only on repeated attempts or pressing. The following is my code. Is this because of Hardware debouncing?. I don't have much knowledge on debouncing. I suspect there is a delay happening in reading and writing GPIOs , because of user process scheduling can be delayed. I don't think accesing GPIO at faster rate is not possible from user application. Please suggest me the best approach. Please suggest me where I am doing wrong. I appreciate any help…

I need a suggestion for a samba server (guess that is what it is called). I have an 8 TB external powered HD, and need a device that I can attach it to, so I can "see" it on the network. I had it attached to the USB 3 port on my Asus router, but it had issues, because the router did not support the 8 TB HD. I now have it connected to one of my microPCs (Tronsmart Ara X5) USB 3 ports, but I am only gettting a max of 12 MBs speed. I would like an inexpensive board that will support that drive and is easy to set up as a samba server..... thanks.
