Hi all. I've always been using the OPi+ as NAS. That gets me up to 13MB/s. More than enough for me. All that is on it are backups, movies and mp3's. It's only got 100Mbps ethernet. And the attached storage devices can't do a lot more either. A USB2 external HDD and a 2.5" HDD. I once tried the same with my OPi+2 and didn't see any changes in network transfer rates. Didn't mind, because I was happy with it. Now I've got the Odroid HC4. Both sata HDDs get +100MB/s read and write. But my network transfer speed is again 13MB/s. I'm using a Gbit router with 5Ghz wifi and the 5Ghz wifi on M4V2. Also OMV on Buster mainline on the HC4 with smb share. For…

Hi there, I'm going to run a full bitcoin node on ARM board so on the first sight requirements are: 1) it is in stock now 2) 2 Gb RAM 3) CPU performance and Stability under high load 4) USB 2.0 (or better) for an external storage 5) ethernet on board as for now my short list is 1) Odroid XU4 or HC1 (C1 was used for bitnodes as far as I know) 2) ASUS Tinker 3) Orange Pi Prime (?) 4) NanoPi K2 5) Rock64 (4Gb) I'm not sure about OPI Prime b/c I've found some reports on the forum about stability issues. Also it is sold out at the moment. I'm open for your suggestions and th…

Hi there, Yesterday, I asked this question on Twitter, but did not get lots of answers. I know I could get an aarch64 workstation, run a 64 bits kernel on it and a 32 bits userspace on top of it, but where is the fun? One year ago or so, I built an armv7 Docker image for me, and I realized only this week that it had been downloaded more than 2 million times. What a pleasant surprise. I launched the build once again to get everything updated, but I discovered the armv7 CI/CD services I used to run my builds on were ... gone. I then switched back to my Orange Pi Zero "farm" to get the images built, but it takes ages, and you know how reliable the SDCar…

Is there a good resource for what's currently being developed by the major SBC manufacturers? I am curious about what is being developed and when it is coming out. I'm thinking about expanding my cluster by another 10 or 20 nodes but I don't want to invest now if something great is going to be released soon. I am most interested in FriendlyARM and OrangePi boards as they seem to have a good performance/value ratio around the $35 price point but I am interested in what all major manufacturers are doing. Is there anywhere to read about development? Or is anyone here privy to what's next for low cost ARM based SBCs?

Where did the the fracking FAQ for dummies go? Am I crazy (please don't answer that), or was there not a little section on stuff like "How do I add a xyz thing-a-jig" somewhere? OK, I'm old, forgetful, and I need new glasses, but I just can't find it. It was there the other day, I'm sure of it! Oh! Oh My! I hit the plus button way too many times, this window is really huge, and now I can't read what I wrote. Damn it, Now I forgot what I was posting about.... Oh well... Happy Holidays, Joe

Hi all o/ I'll be travelling to Canada in a couple of weeks (anyone visiting OpenStack summit in Vancouver?) and I was preparing my shopping cart. To my dismay, Tinker Board is off stock in both US and Canada resellers; I can only find rip-off prices from Marketplace and eBay! Does anyone here knows a reputable vendor where I could buy it sub-USD60? Appreciate any hints!

Where do you store the KeePass-DB? Where would you recommend me to store a Keepass-file? Usually I have my personal documents in my cloud account - but i am not sure if this is safe. Would it be safe to use the cloud for this file? Can i secure it even further, by adding another (extra) layer of security by encrypting the file. General question; How safe is this? What risks do I need to know about? what can i do with the KeePass password file, there are several arguments to decide where to store it. In my humble opinion, if the passwords are really, really important to someone, one should make the decision based on: - the risk of the file being …

I wonder if somebody can help me make a good choice. I'm sorry if I'm a bit rambling but I spent a good part of the weekend looking at different SBCs. I've played around with the early Rasperry Pi, then later on I got a Cubietruck (which still faithfully does network stuff at home) and a Cubox. (Which I wasn't that happy with because I needed a little bit more omph, it was *mostly* fine though) What I'm looking for is an ARM based setup I can do some browsing with, run some lightweight X11 (jwm window manager and some very light programs mostly dependent on X-libraries) and watch videos up to 720p. The screens' resolution would be 1280x1024. It'd b…

I think this is probably something for Thomas, but it's a general question. I'm totally confused (old too which doesn't help) as to which board to get for different jobs. I have an RPi B (256) running. Dietpi as a DLNA and samba sever. Slow but effective. An RPi 3 for general work and tinkering since it's supported quite well and a Orange PI PC which is how I got here... Wow, what a great piece of work you have all done. Igor and Thomas I salute you both! Your knowledge and explanations make me sit in awe. Last time I soldered something in anger it was a quad CMOS NAND and it wasn't cheap either! So, is there a general (noobs) guide to which boards are good for "…

hello everyone would like to buy a sbc and i dont know which would be better, need some sugestions done some research, and the best seem to be the orange pi stuff, judging by stability, community, connectivity and price heard bad stuff about banana pi, which i was looking to get initially, and pine64 i plan to use it as a minipc/server im using linux on all my other pc's (x86) what board you think is better? it is important to me to have working drivers (video/wifi), not necessarely binary blobs, even opensource (i am very satisfied with the state of open source video drivers on x86) please share your experiences

I've been travelling a lot lately for work (IT conferences). I don't brag. Don't get me wrong, I like meeting new people, sharing about technology, but the "travel" part of this travels is the worst for me. And having to use the bad hotel wifi without any protection is not my cup of tea... Working with my phone's 4G tethering is cool, but I feel "naked" anyway... And it does not solve my other devices connection problem. I was almost ready the other day to get a 4G/Wifi travel router to solve it, but as I tend to use SBCs for just about everything, I was wondering if I could make one my travel router, giving me WIFI through a VPN on top of Armbian. It would use free w…

Hi, I'm planning on buying Orange Pi Zero and before I do that, I want to make sure I won't regret anything after buying it. I'm planning on using the pi zero as a wireless router with its built-in wifi, but I read on some posts that the driver XR819 itself has some issues, like heating up the board or high ping. So please suggest me which distro I should use for the pi zero that has no wifi issues. Thank you.

Hi there, I am currently trying to have a solution based on Hx SoCs to encode raw 1080p video on the fly (at smaller resolutions). For the time being, I have: OrangePi Zero 1.4 OrangePi Zero 1.5 OrangePi One OrangePi PC (waiting for it) OrangePi OnePlus The Zero has a heating problem, for sure, the One seems to be better at handling the load. As for the OnePlus and PC, I haven't tried them yet. What I would like to find is a board with eMMC (so that I don't have to change the SDCard regularly), with a good heatsink. these boards are no longer available, but there are quite a lot of these boards around - they work really well and it would be nice to get an Armbian build for them. There is an image from Odroid for it, but with an outdated 3.14 kernel. There is a working 4.9 Kernel for those boards - I was asking them, if they could update there image with the 4.8 Kernel, but the answer was no - http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=16633&start=100 https://github.com/tobiasjakobi/linux-odroid-public/blob/odroid-4.9.y/README-ODROID.md https://github.com/tobiasjakobi/ http://linux-exynos.org/wiki/Hardkernel_ODROID-X2

Hello I searched the forum and there is a lot of sd card performance topics. Im using SanDisk microSDHC 16GB read 98mb/sek UHS I C10 which cost 7.43 USD. I have given up Samsung EVO cards. Sandisk is much better. I have found in promotion - costs only 4.12 USD, read 100MB/sek Toshiba M203 microSDHC 16GB UHS-I, clas 10. There is no information about I/O transfer. Which sd-micro card do you recommend ? I mean card costs max 10 USD or even cheaper.

I'd like to choose an SBC -- running Armbian of course -- for the purpose of processing audio via GStreamer UDP packets. My requirements: -- Half duplex. Must support input (take audio and covert to UDP) and output (decode UDP and generate analog audio) but it is not necessary to handle bidirectional streams simultaneously. One direction at a time is sufficient. -- Process audio with good but not great quality. 16 bit/44.1 kHz is the target bit rate/sample rate. -- First choice of I/O are two 3.5mm jacks on the coastline, one for input and the other for output. -- Second choice of I/O are via GPIO pins. -- I'd rather not use HDMI f…

Hello all. I'm looking into enlarging my SBC collection. I'm mainly looking for a board that is power efficient, has got a fast cpu, and at least 2GB of RAM. This for 1080p video rendering with powerbanks, so power efficiency is very important. I'm now looking into the NanoPC-T3+ since it's an Octa core with 2GB of ram. (or the BPi M3?) Does anyone have got experience with this board in LINUX? I see there's an Armbian in testing. How far is this? Is there hardware video acceleration? Does the cpu perform as promised? What is the power consumption on it? I bought the Khadas Vim2 Max for this. But it doesn't perform well at all. It should replace my Odroid…

I've been considering some options for experiments with electronic wind instruments and synthesizers, such as ZynAddSubFx, Fluidsynth. I've seen project Zynthian and they are running it on a Raspberry Pi 3, so that should be a safe choice, right? Although I'm not sure if they are using some mainstream Debian or something heavily adjusted. Also, for a wind instrument I hoped to find something smaller so I can even build it into the instrument itself; although I don't have my hopes high on that - I'm not sure if I'll find an SBC with enough power. I happen to be one of lucky (or not) backers of NextThingCo C.H.I.P. (now mostly out-of-busi…

For the last few years I have been working on some hardware projects based on ARM SBCs. Every board I work with seems to have different kernel/overlay/GPIO/etc issues. So my question is - Which SBC, or chipset, has most complete and stable Armbian support? In other words if you had to pick a board to go into battle to run Armbian, without knowing any specific requirements, which SBC would it be?

All, I am looking for a 7 - 10" TFT display with SPI connection, and with touchscreen preferably via I2C, for a project of mine. I want to use the display to show just a static HTML page, without any window manager etc. Pretty basic principle I think. The main options are: - RA8875 - RA8876 - SSD1963 I can find online references to the RA8875 being supported by fbtft, but there is also a statement on the github page of fbtft that there will be no more development of fbtft ... Hi , there Im , jeremy It seems like manufacturers should want to sell as many chips as possible, and it seems like they could sell more chips if they released the documentation to allow anyone to implement their product. But many devices or peripherals (i.e., ARM Mali, Allwinner CedarX, etc.) are undocumented and need to be reverse engineered. I noticed this when when I was looking at the RK3399 data sheet and saw all of the features this chip has. It's a shame that of all those features, the only ones that will be used on most SBCs are the ARM cores and the simple I/O peripherals (SPI, I2C, GPIO). I don't have the skills yet to write an OS driver, but…

So the question is "why does disconnecting and reconnecting power cause a shutdown SBC to boot?" If I have an SBC and I shut it down (e.g. using "shutdown now") then it enters an inactive state. However, I haven't done anything with the power supply - the board is still powered. So what changes in the state of the board as a result of cycling the power? If nothing changed then it would continue in the same inactive state as before? But instead, it boots up when power is restored. I'm guessing the answer varies by board. On the Raspberry Pi it seems that on doing a shutdown the shutdown process writes a volatile magic number that can be read by the …

I am not a big fan of btrfs in general. But rather than shit up other people's threads where they mention it, I decided to create my own here where I can lay out my arguments, and then I can link to it instead and people can read it if they want. Some people are not going to like to hear this, so I will back it up by saying I have done fair amount of research into these advanced file systems over the last several years. It is a topic of great interest for me. At the same time, I view all knowledge as provisional, and maybe some things changed in the meantime, so discussion and factual corrections are welcomed. I will also try and spare the reade…

*editing because i didn't see the documentation* Proper security practices should result in the page that tells you what key to download being https, instead of http where anyone could theoretically easily modify the key ID and thus your download would appear to verify fine. As I do not have any Intel based system, and I'd like to buid Armbian, my options are fairly limited. I have a PowerBook G4, but I can't build the Linaro toolchain there, because it requires autogen, which needs guile, which won't build due to undefined symbols. However, the Linaro toolchain builds on my Cubieboard2. I've read a little about how to build Armbian, and to me it looks a bit complicated (I'm used to building stuff myself, I've just never built an entire Linux system before). -So why is it necessary (or recommended) to use a virtual machine for building ? -Is it just to get a "clean system" before building, does it have to do with "cleanup" after…

Hi everyone. I'm starting a project to learn about Big Data processing. Roughly, I'll be following the example set by Michael at http://diybigdata.net/odroid-xu4-cluster/ . From other posts he has made, some extra RAM could be useful, so I am interested in the 4GB ROCK64. My basic configuration will be ROCK64/64Gb eMMC/Pine USB3-SATA cable/HDD. I'm looking to buy 4 of these to start the project and do my development and testing before adding extra nodes to the cluster. It seems that the Pine USB-SATA cable performs well, but the SD card reader does not. I'd like to configure remote power cycling using GPIO from a monitoring SBC and a re…

Hi, I wonder if there exists one method to make the end user a friendly way to access the web server. So I have Armbian with hotspot enabled, if I want to look at specific web page running on the board, I have to know the IP of the wlan0 and specific port of the web server. For example in google chrome I have to insert: http://172.24.1.1:3000 This is very difficult for end user, who has minimal knowledge. Is there any way, that for example you log on the hotspot, then open google chrome and start browse for any arbitrary page (let's say www.google.com) at port 80 and then it's automatically redirected to port 3000, except for all other web servers on the same…

Hi all, I would like to let you know that I successfully added to nexmon (framework to patch broadcom WiFi's driver+fw and add functionalities, like monitor mode) support for Orange Pi Zero 2+ (H3 and H5) running the latest Armbian (kernel next) Both boards have AP6212A as WiFi chipset, that is based on same Broadcom core of Raspberry Pi 3B/0W (bcm43430a1). What I did is basically porting brcmfmac's patches to 4.19 and compiling the Arm toolchain (for firmware cross-compiling) for aarch64. It ain't much but it's honest work I kept airodump running for a few hours and it seems stable. If you want to take a look/try it you can find the code h…

I have seen many Wifi Benchmarks for speed only and not for reliability. I stopped doing wifi benchmarks for speed since i get very different values for the same board a few hours later,. For real life projects reliability and availability is what matters when you depends solely in wifi network. I would strongly suggest @tkaiser to include "reliability" in his tests, maybe a new thread. As for example you can try iperf with -t 1000, -t 2000, -t 3000 and -t 10000 (if it allows?). Try this with your board and see what happens...

at https://www.friendlyarm.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=274 is the "new" NanoPi R1S (available as H3 or H5) and they stated armbian-support in the OS-Section. Is that original or FriendlyElec-armbian? Because the R1S doenst seem to use the AMPAK WiFi/Bluetooth as the NPi R1, but a Realtek module?

Hi all, first post here. Im Ivan, its nice to meet. So i finally came to install Debian Jessie stable, and it's good to be back. My installation is brand new and i have not a wired connection avalaible, so ill have to make things works nowired. As the title say, my card is an Intel i217-V, which in the beginning was not recognized at all by the OS. That was normal and expected, because in the installation phase Debian told that i was missing firmware files named rtlwifi/rtl8821aefw.bin. After a few search i came to download from windows (im in a dual boot system) the following packages: firmware-iwlwifi_0.43_all.deb and firmware-realtek_0.43_all.deb. I also installed …

Hey, we made a tool that allows us to configure the wireless connection of a headless systems using just a smartphone. The reason was that we often ended up in situations where we prepared a headless system with our full stack (see https://nymea.io) and handed it over to someone else to just it in their WLAN. The target group are end users which are not able to use a console. In an attempt to return something to the community we've created a standalone tool for this to share it with others, BerryLan. At the moment it requires to add the nymeas debian repository and install nymea-networkmanager. You can find all the details about it on https://berrylan.app. I…

For those interested I made some improvements in the GLES display backend of uae4arm: https://github.com/Chips-fr/uae4arm-rpi I tested it on Armbian on my orange Pi Pc+ (H3), was able to get 50fps for some games. The only remaining issue is that vsync is not activated and tearing occurs. Does anyone know how to solve this ? Feel free to try on others boards...

Wow ... I just discovered "nmtui" to configure Wifi from the CLI / ncurses. No more difficult file editing for Wifi. Nice! nmtui -> "Activate a connection", then select the Wifi network you want to connect to, fill out the password, and you're done. After configuring, the settings appear in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ Only after finding 'nmtui', I found this page https://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_Getting-Started/#how-to-connect-to-wireless Hope this helps others.

Hello, would it be possible to integrate WPS on boot by default on SD Card images proposed for download. This would ease the setup, especially on small devices without RJ45 plug ! Thanks.

hey, I'm having some trouble with my ssh connection to an armbian based server. It feels like a heavy lag within the filesystem, sometimes it takes up to 20 seconds to open a file with vim or use cd with tab-completion. But it is not always there, it feels more like some heavy write operation occurs spontaneously. I start digging but I have no clue why this happens. But at least I found the most disk I/O processes which are influxdb and mysql. [16:54|root@odroidhc1 ~]# cat /syscat /sys/fs/ext4/mmcblk0p1/session_write_kbytes 118811040 [16:55|root@odroidhc1 ~]# uptime 16:56:03 up 10 days, 3:53, 3 users, load average: 0,87, 0,64, 0,59 [17:15|ro…

Hi all. I wanted to put some light on the fact that you now can run some x86 Windows and Linux programs and games on the RK3399 with Box86. I have a topic about it in my lonely "Gaming on ARM club" I've made a preview video about it last week. I've done some further tests. It is just amazing. Plays way better than the RPi4. Tho not yet as many things work. @Salvador Liébana made prebuild images with Box86 preinstalled, and with many other emulators. You can download it here : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gQtgWz2pH2TX9Qs_bcDU9zn7w4edfcVf/view?fbclid=IwAR0SRSC8M_1_qm825n4Bd7bqjLmO30qTpFo73qQQga-TC_LRuc2BVFcGzKU Has been tested on many RK3399 d…

I am considering to buy a new board for personal cloud / webserver / NAS / torrent / DLNA etc. I can hear you thinking: yes and? So what? I narrowed my options down to an Odroid-XU4 or Tinker Board. Note that for the NAS functionality I already own a Gbit NAS enclosure. What would you buy and why? You have to choose!

I'm looking at the NanoPi R1S, R1, or Orange Pi R1 as a simple bridge device for Zerotier. They all seem to have some limitations that likely mean ~100Mbps either from the 100M ports or the R1S' USB2 connected port so that's fine. I'm most drawn to the R1S for price and included case. Questions are: 1) Are these the only decent <=$30 devices for this task? 2) Is one of these known to be more stable/reliable? 3) Is there a likely software support issue with any of them? The deployment model is pretty simple. Plug WAN in to and DHCP port, have the firewall locked down tight, and bridge a ZT network into the LAN port.
