This is an improvement over the previous OS called Armbian-Reforged V1.0 - XFCE4 is now the main DE - File Size has been reduced to 2.9Gb This build of TwisterOS Armbian target RK3399 devices supported by Armbian. the only required step after flashing the sd card it's to rename the DTB label inside /boot/armbianEnv.txt to your device DTB (you can find the DTB files on /boot/dtb/rockchip/ folder). after first boot, you should change the default password for user and root with passwd and sudo passwd respectively. Also, remember to resize your sd card/emmc manually from gnome disks to fill your entire disk space. This is a beta and we…

This post is to share my successful webcam installation with Armbian and one of my SBC’s (orange pi plus). I’ve used a Logitech C270 which can be purchased from eBay for roughly 20 Euros. Also el-cheapo shops like lightinthebox sell the C270. Benefit of such a cam is that you now have a cable from your SBC to your cam which makes (physical) cam installation easier IMHO. Also IMHO the C270 is a better camera than the famous GC2035, but it is also more expensive. Price / 'bang for the buck' ratio is more or less the same for both camera’s if you ask me. You get what you pay for. Enough talk now: the installation All I did was a fresh Armbian desktop v5.20 …

Hello, I am wondering if someday tutorials will be made available for ones who like the idea of using single board computers for projects, but have not learned to write their own code. Raspberry has an overabundance of people sharing what they have created [this for example https://tutorials-raspberrypi.com/setup-raspberry-pi-node-js-webserver-control-gpios/] I have made use of what I have searched and found to make my website again [my site], but at least for the computer hosting my relay interface I want to use better boards with more RAM. Should I learn to write some code and get the satisfaction of making it work by myself or should I wait for a future…

I would like to create an ubuntu desktop image for a rk3066-based dongle (measy u2a). Is there anything in this website where start from? Or something ready-to-try? Will the docs here be helpful? I managed to run armbian on a measy u1a (which has a Allwinner A10) by simply flashing sdcard with an image (Lime A10) found here, I would like to do the same with rk3066. Thanks, Antonio

Hi, Is there any plan fro Armbian to support Rockchip processors like RK3288 or RK3399? Any guide on how to port Armbian on them? These processors have official support on GPU (both openCL and openGL ES), HW video codec (like H264 encoding and decoding with gstream), and also open-sourced Kernel 4.4.x. And most important thing is they are willing to support opensource community and fix their bugs continuously. I've got a RK3288 proto board which was able to run Linux 4.4 + Debian with HW accelerated desktop and video playing, and it worked perfect. The only thing that troubled me is the Debian system that maintained by Rockchip is suck.…

This looks very interesting, kswapd is essentially a cpu hungry process in nearly most common tasks that move memory around, glad to hear there is interesting work on to bring down cpu usage and make page swapping better. I would like to bring the patches in for some kernel and see if things would improve for light/medium desktop workloads. Anyone has some experience about?

Wherein I explain my conversion... Pine64 was barely on my radar in the past. There are so many SBC and companies just trying to sell crap it can be hard to tell who is who some times, until you look into one company / board / device or another, a little more in depth. I have been following Librem 5 development for a long time, so I was aware of PinePhone, but they seemed in my mind back then a bit like a "Johnny come lately" who were just trying to capitalize on whatever Purism were trying to do. Then @lanefu was raving about his PineBookPro in IRC, it was only then I started really poking around their forums the last month or so, a…

Hi there, I am currently trying to have a solution based on Hx SoCs to encode raw 1080p video on the fly (at smaller resolutions). For the time being, I have: OrangePi Zero 1.4 OrangePi Zero 1.5 OrangePi One OrangePi PC (waiting for it) OrangePi OnePlus The Zero has a heating problem, for sure, the One seems to be better at handling the load. As for the OnePlus and PC, I haven't tried them yet. What I would like to find is a board with eMMC (so that I don't have to change the SDCard regularly), with a good heatsink. I just need an RJ45 plug, power, and I'm good to go. I don't need CSI, video output or anything el…

I made a funny project for trying to use the ARM single board as the USB disk or cdrom. I did a lot of optimizations for the size and speed. Releases: https://github.com/usboot/USBootPi/releases USBootPi supports NanoPi M1. It also supports OrangePi One/PC but we need more USB cables(one for power, another one for OTG). Sorry, there is no the English readme now.

Yesterday i did install Armbian_5.86_Aml-s905_Debian_buster_default_5.1.0_20190514.img from @balbes150 on my Sunvell T95KPro (S912). While installing Pihole the Installation does break when trying to start lighttpd. After checking with journalctl -u lighttpd it turns out that the file /usr/share/lighttpd/create-mime.assign.pl is missing, because in the newer lighttpd-version of debian buster the file has be renamed to /usr/share/lighttpd/create-mime.conf.pl (see also https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/lighttpd-does-not-start/6207/11 ) Pihole doesnt know/use the new name with debian buster, so it fails to start the lighttpd …

I would like to announce that I am getting started on an armbian-derived project, Armbian-NG. This is not a fork of Armbian, nor a rewrite, it's a derived project that piggyback's on the excellent work by Igor and the entire armbian development team. I think of Armbian-NG as armbian's little clumsy brother, who is just learning to walk but has great potential. In as few words as possible, Armbian-NG will be a Python (set of) script(s) that runs natively on Aarch64 (64-bit ARM) hardware (running Ubuntu 18.04 or later) to build Armbian images. More details can be found here: https://github.com/AndrewBCN/Armbian-NG As with armbian, anybody is welcome to con…

Hi everyone, I'm looking at a project to provide a Media Server in a small bar to the customers along with an Intranet webserver and Wireless Internet gateway. I want the internal LAN consisting of my Desktop PC and the new SBC server to be running GbE and for the SBC to be serving data from a 2.5" 250Gb SATA drive directly rather than over a USB bridge. This has led me to a choice of a Cubie board or Banana Pi connected to a GbE switch or alternatively I could simply get the Banana router board and avoid the extra switch device. (I'm leaning towards the router board as it will be less devices and therefore consume less power, unless there is a major disadvantage …

Hi guys! so, i've noted a major difference between the friendlyarm rk3399 sbcs and the other models, ant that's bc the friendly arm rk3399s run at 1866 mhz while the other models run at 1600 mhz. that means 100 glmark2 points less, for example.I would like to know how to use this bootloader instead, and even then, how to even go further. I overclocked my rockpro64 to 2.2 ghz for the big cores and 1.8 for the low power cores. Its interesting how much performance we can get with this cosmetic changes. obviously, its at my own risk. the rockpro64 was tested at higher frequencies than 1866 mhz, so I would expect at least that armbian should b…

Hi, I noticed OrangePi have started selling a 7" lcd with an hdmi adapter. It's only 1000x600 (which might be an awkward resolution to get working with some SBCs) but I thought I'd give one a try. Hi Experts, We are using Armbian with Orange Pi zero. Image works fine. We do not have battery in our system and power goes off frequently in India. Sometime when Orange Pi zero is switched off and switched on again, its image gets corrupted and only way to recover is to reflash the card which will not be possible if we send product for field testing. When image is corrupted we see following logs 35152 bytes read in 501 ms (68.4 KiB/s) ## Loading init Ramdisk from Legacy Image at 43300000 ... I am not a big fan of btrfs in general. But rather than shit up other people's threads where they mention it, I decided to create my own here where I can lay out my arguments, and then I can link to it instead and people can read it if they want. Some people are not going to like to hear this, so I will back it up by saying I have done fair amount of research into these advanced file systems over the last several years. It is a topic of great interest for me. At the same time, I view all knowledge as provisional, and maybe some things changed in the meantime, so discussion and factual corrections are welcomed. I will also try and spare the reade…

These days i did install on some devices debian buster (via armbian-build-system generated). On the Orange Pi One this did work also fine with the cpu-temperature (showing via armbianmonitor -m) On a Orange Pi PC2 and a NanoPi K1 Plus this doesnt work. First I did think this is a problem of the dev-image with debian buster where /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp doesnt show an output via cat or more - but its filesize does show a 4096 bytes size (also on a working device - and also rights 444 = rrr for the file): -r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 May 20 10:47 temp BUT NOW after a apt update & apt upgrade I also got thi…

Hello! I wish to make my OrangePi 'failsafe' in regards of spontaneous power losses and such, so I need to have it running write protected, with writes going to a special partition or just RAM. My searches yielded an 'ancient' way to freeze the root filesystem using overlayroot, which isn't supoprted anymore (https://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_Advanced-Features/) As I think that this kind of 'headless embedded usage' is an usual scenario for SBC running Armbian and having seen there was a method for doing so before, I assume there probably is a popular modern method for doing so, but I couldn' find it. How would I do this with the…

I am currently doing a school project which involves embedded pentesting, using a drone. Hi guys, do you know some article about how to run DHT11 or DHT22 sensors on Banana Pi? I have one sensor bmp180 on I2C bus and reading temperature and barometric pressure was quite easy but this is different bus and move code from Raspberry needs more effort. Basically I need proper binary able to read from gpio pins and I want to record/show values from this sensor on Rpi Monitor. If somebody have previous experiences with that and want to share them I will be very appreciated.

Hi, i'm using a Raspad tablet-like device with a aml-s905x-cc inside and i'm experimenting some mobile interface that i can use with the touchscreen, but also with mouse and keyboard. I'm simply curious about convergence desktop designs and mobile desktop environments. The obvious choice would be GNOME, but it is very heavy, both on memory and cpu usage and my board with only 2GB of ram cannot handle it if combined with other heavy programs. I knew that Librem was developing a desktop environment for their Librem 5 linux phone. Since they focus on opensource software i thought if i can install their desktop environment on my tablet to try it and.... yes, it is possib…

IMHO, XR819 is killing the OPi0 golden goose...All else looks so perfect for the price ! Can't they just go back to RTL8189 in the next couple production batches? Will that make life easier? Ironic to hear that XR819 has its own ARM core- what good is the core? What is the prospect of Xunlong offering a eMMC 4-8GB version of OPi0? SD cards are expensive and unreliable, plus can add an SD card drive for more memory. And adding a power barrel to the $2 expansion board that is otherwise just what is needed, maybe make it $2.50? My take: OPi0 v2 512MB, say $12-15, with RTL8189, 4-8 GB eMMC + $2.50 expansion board adding power barrel + Armbian OS = market winn…

Greetings everyone, A couple years ago, I did my research and followed the recommendation here and on linux-sunxi to purchase a Cubietruck and have had excellent results. I use my small low power GNU/Linux sever for all manner of things including self hosted "cloud" (contact, calendar, file synchronization), XMPP messaging server, media server, etc... It has been such a success in fact that we are putting more and more of our valuable personal files on there like pictures, etc. and that has me thinking more and more about reliability, backup, etc... I became very interested in ZFS but my understanding is that it requires 64-bit, but th…

I have an OrangePi Prime with 2 GB RAM. I'm running a server-like node.js app that does constant writes to .json files and text log files. Let's call it "database storage". The app is not otherwise RAM intensive, can run fine on 512 MB boards. I'm thinking of putting all my RAM to use and move the database storage to a RAM disk made with Zram. Do you see any potential problems and interference with the way Zram is configured for this board?

The deb packages do not work for ARM, so you have to build it from source using my scripts. Install Zabbix

I don't know if this the right place to post this question. I am looking for a board that fits what I need. I have been looking and could not find everything I need in one board. I thought of asking here maybe someone can suggest something. So here are the specifications I am looking for: 1- CPU: has a crypto engine/ Security system. Almost all Allwinner Axx and Hx have crypto engines. 2- wireless connectivity Has all or most of the following: WiFi 2.4G, 5GHz and 3G/4G Module if possible. 3- Network connectivity: Has 1000 Mbps Ethernet. 4- USB : At least one A-type USB. Hi Igor, I'm fresh owner of CB5 (CT2+) board and I'm interesting about your opinion regarding this board. I hope that in near future you will start new branch of Armbian for H8. At this moment, best option for me is still using CT as a production appliance but maybe CT+ will be faster... (instead SATA USB bridge access of course).

Hi, I have currently a Raspberry Pi 3B+ running as WiFi access point, hooked up to the router via Ethernet. This allows me to play around and redirect traffic via TOR or whatever I can think of on the Pi. It works quite well, but I actually think the PI is possibly a bit overpowered and too expensive. Can anyone suggest an SBC that can handle the task equally well (stable + good WiFi performance for a handful of clients with connection to 50MBit/s uplink) but is less expensive? I already had a look at the Orange Pi Zero Plus 2, which seems suitable in terms of specs. Thanks, 1llusion

Hello all. I'm looking into enlarging my SBC collection. I'm mainly looking for a board that is power efficient, has got a fast cpu, and at least 2GB of RAM. This for 1080p video rendering with powerbanks, so power efficiency is very important. I'm now looking into the NanoPC-T3+ since it's an Octa core with 2GB of ram. (or the BPi M3?) Does anyone have got experience with this board in LINUX? I see there's an Armbian in testing. How far is this? Is there hardware video acceleration? Does the cpu perform as promised? What is the power consumption on it? I bought the Khadas Vim2 Max for this. But it doesn't perform well at all. It should replace my Odroid…

I've been travelling a lot lately for work (IT conferences). I don't brag. Don't get me wrong, I like meeting new people, sharing about technology, but the "travel" part of this travels is the worst for me. And having to use the bad hotel wifi without any protection is not my cup of tea... Working with my phone's 4G tethering is cool, but I feel "naked" anyway... And it does not solve my other devices connection problem. I was almost ready the other day to get a 4G/Wifi travel router to solve it, but as I tend to use SBCs for just about everything, I was wondering if I could make one my travel router, giving me WIFI through a VPN on top of Armbian. Actually I'm looking for board which is good for Home Media Server with support for transcoding 1080p(4k? if any can) with good fps (24+) Already tried rpi3 results are not that good as i want 13fps for 720p x264 Hi10 5Mb/s bitrate=> 720p x264 5Mb/s bitrate So i think 1080p will be much slower. Do you think orange pi prime can handle this type of tasks well?

Hello, can anybody know how to disable wifi module in armbian?

Hello all, I've been recently burned by a failing SD card (armbianmonitor -v possibly saved me a much worse fate!) and I'm now trying to proactively avoid a similar situation. I found that WD has a line of cards that claim a health status feature that "Helps in preventive maintenance by signaling when the card needs to be replaced". One of them is the Purple QD101 that seems reasonably priced at $15 for 64GB. I'm not finding much in the way of details of how this is exposed though. Is there any way to get access to this information on linux?

Hi I am just doing some tests on a rockpi4b-2gb with a marvell 9235 sata controller and 4x Integral p5 120gb ssds. Purely out of interest as was expecting the card to bottleneck, but generally thought push it to the max and see how things go. I am just running on the default Radxa Debian-stretch-4.4 using mdadm for a start. Looking for benchmark mark tips & tricks and what I should be outputting, so we can have a look for curiosity sake. Someone sent a week ago a couple of 2.8" TFT Display ili9341 and asked me to wire it to an H5 and make it work. I had some experience with the ST7789S with Nanopi NEO plus2 and that worked out of the box so i decided to use Nanopi NEO2 as a test bed and used the same wiring scheme. I have managed to wire it and although the FB is created and no error at all but the display is blank (black with no backlight enabled). Hi, is possible to setup overlayf on Amrbian? I'm using Orange Pi Zero. I found only this https://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_Advanced-Features/#how-to-freeze-your-filesystem-outdated and docs is outdated. On Rapsbian I can enable overlayfs directly from raspi-config. Is there any way how to do the same on Armbian? Thanks for help.

Hi, I am completely newbie here, so apologize if my question is stupid... I am planning to buy a board to build a wireless print server. what I need my board to have is wireless connection and a Linux distribution capable of running cups, and a USB port. I think Orange Pi Zero fits my needs with a good price, BUT it does not come with any video output option built-in. My question is: if I buy Orange Pi Zero, and "burn" the armbian OS to SD card using my laptop, would I be able to configure ethernet and/or wifi network from my laptop, changing the network configuration files inside the SD card, and then boot the Pi board and have it connected to my network with…

The Z80-MBC2 is a 4-chip Z80-computer which can run CP/M and has a 5V TTL-serial-port. The Z80-MBC2 is powered and accessable via a USB-TTL-serial-adapter (configured to 5V - not 3.3V) type CP2102 seen as /dev/ttyUSB0 The easy way would be to connect the USB-adapter to a Pi-style computer wth armbian, login via SSH and start minicom for the port. But that way doenst look as good - to me - as the following way First we need to install ser2net and telnet (telnet doesnt seem to be installed as standard) in armbian via apt install ser2net telnet Then we have to edit /etc/ser2net.conf (delete all lines after the comments and in…

For the last few years I have been working on some hardware projects based on ARM SBCs. Every board I work with seems to have different kernel/overlay/GPIO/etc issues. So my question is - Which SBC, or chipset, has most complete and stable Armbian support? In other words if you had to pick a board to go into battle to run Armbian, without knowing any specific requirements, which SBC would it be?

Hi, First of all I love the Armbian distro on Orange Pi / H3. It's the best out there and what was missing from the beginning. Awesome job. Quick question: is there any reason why Armbian doesn't have Avahi preinstalled by default ? Of course there's no pb adding it afterward but it would be pretty convenient when working with a headless setup. Just curious, Thanks, Richard

I've built my own security cameras for about 8 years (using computer vision, ML, etc.), but now I want to do something off the shelf so to speak. I just wired my attic to my office with cat 6 cable and my house is wired with cat5e, More than likely the cameras will be plugged directly into the SBC from the attic via PoE. My question is which SBC would be able to handle hardware H265 decoding using 4K cameras at 30 fps? That's about 27 Mbps per camera times 4 cameras. iperf test from my attic showed 961 Mbps using ODroid XU4. So my questions are: Which SBC can handle H265 hardware decoding of four 4K cameras? I want to have 2 1Gbps ports, so I can have camera…

Hi there, with the global lockdown, I had to move my "lab" at home... and I have trouble with the infamous WAF. So I moved almost everything in the attic, and would have loved to pull an Ethernet cable from my ISP box to the "lab" Wi-Fi router, but it's not significant other's compatible. As strange as it may seem, the Wi-Fi signal coming from the ISP box is really strong in the attic, so I thought of redirecting the Wi-Fi to the 24 ports switch thanks to a SBC. I don't want the SBC to act as a router, I want to use the router which is in my ISP box, so that I can still interact easily with the machines in the attic wherever I may be in the house. I…

Hi Armbians As the title already says, I would like to know what the best 5V SBC`s are to be used as network relay? The board should have a minimum of 1,5 GB RAM and it should be able to handle about (or even more then) 50 MBit/s synchronous network bandwidth by ethernet plug 24/7. My standart board for this use is the Cubietruck/ Cubieboard3. But this one is only able to handle traffic about the 25 MBit/s range. Same for Banana Pro by Lemaker. It can handle a little bit more then the CT, but not that much. I also have a Khadas VIM Pro (V1) and a Hummingboard by SolidRun avaliable but never tested them for this szenario. Maybe ther…

Hi Experts, I am using Armbian on Orange Pi Zero and image is working fine and we can access armbian console withe the three pins next to ethernet port. However we see that there are Rx, Tx pin on 26 pin header compatible to Raspberry pi. When we connect the console to the GND/Rx/Tx on 26 pin header we do not get console so my understanding is that there is a dedicated serial port for console that can be accessed from GND/Rx/Tx next to ethernet port and Serial port on Tx/Rx pins on 26 pin header is different. We need extra serial port to connect our UART based peripheral. So I am wondering if I can use the Rx/Tx/GND on 26 pin header, if yes how do I use them …

The past few weeks I did see a lot of anger and frustration on this forum. Key contributors of the forum (.. Armbian developers) seem to struggle with the level of their audience. People ask for functionality which is not around because of bad hardware, people aspect certain things from Armbian which are not possible, people expect “out of the box” solutions, no feedback from users, etc., etc. I personally think this is getting more and more a problem. The risk is that key Armbian developers get frustrated and not motivated to continue their absolute fantastic contribution to the development of “THE NUMBER ONE OS” for SoC Arm boards! I think it is best t…

Are clusters able to do anything useful yet? I'm vaguely aware of open stack and I know that googles server farms are full of consumer PCs all networked together and even people making RasPi clusters of varying sizes, but are they any good for normal uses? For example if I bought 10 OPi PC's and stuck them in a case with an Ethernet switch and a hard drive could I build Armbian really really quickly (typing make -j40 would be nice ;-) or would it ultimately just get bogged down and do nothing?

Seems that hardware accelerated Videodecoding & GPU usage is the new 'hot topic' at the moment. A lot of this stuff is discussed in various topics and threads and subforums here. As nice at it is to bring this topics up, it's hard to follow them across the forum and when those questions come up from users you have to link the to a bunch of topics which they probably don't read cause it's simply to much to read (I now that this is a shitty argument, but reading is boring for most people in those days.. ). So why does it make sense to open another thread targeting this topic? This should summarize the things that work, no suggestions what could work, should work,…

I started this journey with DietPi on a nanopi r4s. I asked about it on the DietPi forum, and they basically said "Our distro is a bunch of scripts on top of Armbian. We can't really help you with a kernel problem." So I reimaged with Armbian and I'm here now. Background with DietPi: When I first boot the DietPi image, the LAN port works. This is on kernel 5.10.63. Then as soon as I log into it via ssh on the IP address acquired by the LAN port, it proceeds to auto-upgrade software, including the kernel, which goes to 5.15.25. During the upgrade, I got messages saying a bunch of firmware for the r8169 driver was not there. Installing armbian-firmware-full…

Hi All, Which SOC gives best performance today for SATA I/O? Hi, I was just in the armbian matrix channel asking about FLOSS SBCs, SBCs which can be booted / operated without blobs or with as few blobs as possible. I am not one of those purist Stallmanite zealots who refuse to touch anything which i deem imperfect in the freedom department. Instead I am just trying to be practical and figure out whats the best options for SBCs which respect users. SBCs whose security/integrity is verifiable and doesn't hinge on appeals to authority, like "just trust our secret sauce, it will be fine". I want to know about any projects from the past, things that are in progress, and hear experiences from folks who are interested in open s…

Hello fellow armbianites, It has been put to me that arm based boards require a DTB file because arm works a bit differently than x86. The difference between an arm and an x86 board, is that x86 is standardised and always has the same form factor. When you plug in a device into an expansion slot or port on your motherboard the new device announces itself. All the addresses are known in advance and hence there is no need for a DTB file. On arm on the other hand board design is not standardised. You can design a PCB whichever way you would like and solder any component onto the board that your heart desires. There is no single way…

Hi All, I wonder if anyone ever succeeded in getting the USB 2.0 port of this board work properly. I'd like to (try to) use it as a *very* low cost ADS-B receiver using an external RTL-SDR dongle, but despite the fact that the port is claimed to be a 2.0 (and recognized by the OS as a 2.0 Hub) when I attach the dongle (which is a high speed 2.0) no driver are loaded and is instead recognized as a full speed device, therefore the RTL-SDR library stops working with transfer errors, since it needs the 480M transfer speed of the 2.0 port and is unable to work with the 12M speed of the "full" standard. Here is my dmesg | grep usb …
