  1. Hi all. I've just finished a new video where I review an Amazon AWS Graviton2 arm64 server. This is a monster with 64 high-performance N1 cores. It isn't clocked that high at 2.5Ghz, but it performs amazing for that clockspeed. Here is my video. Here all the info I've gathered. AWS Server 32-cores 128GB ------------------------- NEOVERSE N1 64-core AWS Graviton2 ARMv8.2 aarch64 Arm’s Neoverse N1 cores -> based on A76 -> almost identical to Arm’s 64-core reference N1 platform -> CPU cores are clocked a bit lower 2.5GHz and only 32MB instead of 64MB of L3 cache Max speed 2500Mhz 8-channel DDR-3200 128GB ram 64 PCIe4 lanes TSMC’s 7…

Here are the instructions to run Htop remotely using a web browser. I often use Htop to monitor the health of my boards and servers (amd64). It is a good tool for the sys admin to monitor the servers in real-time without much resources and it is not very intrusive. 3. I got my hands on a "Set 9" Orange Pi Lite + GC2035 camera a while back and I've finally been able to put together a self-contained object detection device using Tensorflow, without sending any image data outside for processing. Basically, its a python Flask application that captures frames from the camera using a GStreamer pipeline. It runs them through a Tensorflow object detection model and spits out the same frame with extra metadata about objects it found, and renders a box around them. Using all four cores of the H2 it can do about 2-3 fps. The app keeps track of the count of all object types it has seen and exposes the metrics in prometheus format, for easy…

  4. As a result of all the work that Armbian developers put into the upgrade to kernel 4.14 for the XU4 board family, now we can enjoy many new features. One of them is the access to the SoC video encoding capabilities. Emby Media Server can take advantage of the Exynos 5422 MFC video engine for transcoding. That means lower CPU usage, lower temperatures, and the possibility of encoding in real time higher resolutions or more simultaneous streams. In my tests, I've been able to transcode one HEVC 1080p and one 480p at the same time, or five 480p (though it will depend on the bitrate of the source material). However, the ffmpeg version shipped with offi…

Today I had the pleasure of benchmarking an ARM64 server. This server has been made available for Armbian to test native ARM64 image building. I knew nothing about the server. Nobody told me any details. So everything was an adventure for me to find out. I got SSH access, so my research began. A lscpu informed me it had 32-cores all clocked at 3.3Ghz. 7. Hi all. I've just finished a long video special where I talk about all my SBCs. In the order how I got them. I show the specs of all of them. Say what I like, what's bad about them. What I use them for. What SBC is best for your goal. Here's my video, I hope you enjoy it. Greetings, NicoD. P.S. : Pictures of anyone else their collection? Mine are not all on this pic, no room for them all.

  9. Hi all, Maybe there are a lot people who got this working but for me was today the day. I buyed a time a go a cheap but fast NVME SSD from Aliexpress. The smallest one a 128GB. I have also a 512GB in my laptop and for the price they are really good. But i needed also a USB-NVME external housing. That is the Ugreen NVME 10GBps to USB adapter. In very short but i will explain more in the future. 1. Flash a MicroSD card with your favourite Armbian to the MicroSD. Update with sudo apt-get update. Also with a SSH session not a problem. 2. Place the USB disk in a USB 3.0 port of the Orange Pi. By the OrangePi 4 it´s the blue one on the…

In this tutorial we build a custom .config for OrangePiOnePlus board, eg: to remove blutooth, WiFi and or USB3.x support since the hardware is not onboard, alternatively you can adjust settings to your needs which is not in the default .config. The section mentions, if file " userpatches/linux-$KERNELFAMILY-$KERNELBRANCH.config " exists, it will be used instead of default one from " config ". This means for the OPiOnePlus : " linux-sunxi64-dev.config " should be created, but please note "dev" is just one of the three options available, which are: " current ", " legacy " and " dev " The default config files are located in : " /armbian/config…

  13. I am releasing this patch in the hope of you may find it useful. I have also included a sample dts file. It seems to work in 48mhz quite well with very few SPI errors. (Note that the pieces of the driver has been around for some time but I have never seen it put together without further work. Hopefully this patch would make it readily usable. I have tested it on 5.5.18 and quite happy with it.) 0001-fbtft-fb_ili9488.patch 1_ili9488.dts Sample file is for nanopi neo. Driver also works with 4 inch LCD, MSP4020, MSP4021

  14. Hello, I'm new here and do not quite understand the sub-forums here but hopefully this is the right one. I got an Orange pi ONE running 4.19 RT kernel with Armbian buster. I was testing out the GPIO capabilities of the H3 SoC without any libraries and got only 1.67 Mhz at best(which is ironically the same as WiringPIOP) with some task interrupt issues. #define INP_GPIO(g) *(unsigned int *)(gpio+0x04) &= ~(7 << (((g) % 10) * 3)) //I did not thoroughly check if the mapping is okay #define OUT_GPIO(g){\ *(unsigned int *)(gpio+0x04) &= ~(6 << (((g) % 8) * 4));\ *(unsigned int *)(gpio+0x0…

  15. A very hackish port exists of this Raspberry PI RGB LED Matrix Library which works for Allwinner H3 devices. This works by bit-banging 14 GPIO pins simultaneously to achieve about a 10Mhz throughput / 100fps refresh rate. Refer to here: https://github.com/mrfaptastic/opi-allwinner-h3-rgb-led-matrix I managed to easily get up and running using an Orange PI. Refer to the README of the github repository.

tkaiser has built a new Kernel with i2s Modules. 18. I know the RPi is pretty limited on the GPIO pins. Now my question is how it looks on Le Potato, i.E. is it possible to power a fan directly from the GPIO pins? Powering it from the 3.3 V line seems to work just fine but I fear damaging hardware by trying to connect it to a GPIO instead.

  19. Hi, all! Is it possible to make micro usb otg connection through gpio pins on the orange pi zero? I'm asking because when OPi is located in the box, I need to use external USB type B socket to micro usb cable. So it will be really cool, if I will have opportunity to connect usb otg socket through gpios. Regards.

  20. On some devices (mostly headless) like Pine A64 LTS and other SBCs with Allwinner SoCs is Lima blacklisted by default or not supported by distribution. For getting Lima work, you need to use distribution, which have already Mesa with Lima support (Mesa 20.1+) (or compile latest Mesa from sources, but this is not included in this tutorial). At the moment of writing, it's Ubuntu Focal and Debian Bullseye. I personally prefer Debian more, so in my case, download Debian Bullseye image for your SBC and burn it into the board. After booting into your board, find file named /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-NAMEOFYOURSBC.conf (for me it's blacklist-pinea64-lts.conf…

  21. It's simple guide, presenting how to setup LCD (ili9431) with integrated touchscreen (tsc2046) on mainline kernel (4.11). It may be not fully "armbian way", since I'm pretty new in armbian In case that somebody is interested, I recently bought couple those displays from here Few basic informations: 1. OrangePiZero has two SPI buses. First one is usually occupied by build in memory. So we can only use bus1 2. tsc2046 chip is fully compatible with ads7846, and we have drivers for it since years now 3. Maximum clock frequency for ads7846 is 3.25Mhz, but don't expect that it will work with that. Reasonable value is something beet…

  22. I've been doing some tests with NanoPi M4 these days. While I'm not a professional board reviewer, here I can share some early performance numbers to you. Beware that none of these tests fit into real world use cases, they are just provided as-is. Besides, Armbian development on RK3399 boards are still at a very early stage, so any of these numbers may change in the future, due to software changes. Unless mentioned, all tests are done using Armbian nightly image, FriendlyARM 4.4 kernel, CPU clocked at 2.0/1.5GHz Powering NanoPi M4 is my first board powered by USB-C, while RK3399 is not power-hungry under normal load, I do doubt if 5V/3A power supply …

  25. Hi there. Trying to get SPIDEV working on my good old cubietruck aka cubieboard3 with an allwinner A20. Found some posts here and there dealing with A20 boards. But nothing of that did anything for me so far. Enabled it in armbian-config hardware settings and rebooted. No /dev/spi* at all. No mentioning of "spi" in dmesg. Step 1 gave a line "overlays=spi-spidev" in /boot/armbianEnv.txt. Read somewhere else that there should be another line "param_spidev_spi_bus=0", but that was not created by armbian-config. Added that ...bus=0 line myself and rebooted. Still no spi device and nothing in dmesg /proc/device-tree-model says "cubietec…

Since I've seen some really weird disk/IO benchmarks made on SBCs the last days and both a new SBC and a new SSD arrived in the meantime I thought let's give it a try with a slightly better test setup. I tested with 4 different SoC/SBC: NanoPi M3 with an octa-core S5P6818 Samsung/Nexell SoC, ODROID-C2 featuring a quad-core Amlogic S905, Orange Pi PC with a quad-core Allwinner H3 and an old Banana Pi Pro with a dual-core A20. The device considered the slowest (dual-core A20 with just 960 MHz clockspeed) is the fastest in reality when it's about disk IO. Since most if not all storage 'benchmarks' for SBC moronically focus on sequential transfer speeds o…

  30. Hi all. I wrote a small guide on enabling pps-gpio by modifying the device tree. With a PPS signal it's possible to setup your board as a Stratum 1 time server for your local network or the NTP pool. I used this method on a Rock64 but it should be applicable on most board. PPS-GPIO on Rock64 with Armbian legacy (4.4.X) kernel Cheers.

This falls somewhere between "how-to", "research", and "development", so I stuck it here. @adafruit is working to target CircuitPython to Armbian devices, something that will be a bit of a task. I've been playing with the code to get it working on my Tritium H3, finally did (some extra sudo-ing was needed), so I'll probably toss in a couple board definitions/help here and there if I can. it had hijacked a C2 thread (not completely, it was at least about using it on the C2), and I thought it best to continue discussion here. @chwe, @sgjava, and @Larry Bank all have various experience with various GPIO tools, their interest may vary. You may be asking the same question as I do (did), why using the image from balbes and not the official one from the download page ? It is actually quite simple, balbes integrates the latest Kernel for his LE builds. I have asked him about the different versions he offers for Le Potato: All versions…

But the 4x A73 cores are clocked at 2.2Ghz and the 2 x A53 cores to 1.8Ghz. So it performs a lot better. It also comes with an NPU, MIPI-DSI and MIPI-CSI. And can be powered with USB type-c from 5V up to 20V. Here my review video. Here all my gathered information. 52. Hello, the Rock64 SBC can receive an add-on board with audio ports and an additional ethernet port. I have used it a lot before, with Debian Stretch. With the armbian image it does not work. The reason is simple, this board must be activated by a script which is missing. Ayufan has added a set of scripts in /usr/local/sbin, but they are not present in this build. They can be found here : https://github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-package/blob/master/root/usr/local/sbin/enable_dtoverlay Then run the necessary command : enable_dtoverlay eth1 ethernet@ff550000 okay and the card is present in ifconfig. I had it attached to the USB 3 port on my Asus router, but it had issues, because the router did not support the 8 TB HD. I now have it connected to one of my microPCs (Tronsmart Ara X5) USB 3 ports, but I am only gettting a max of 12 MBs speed. I would like an inexpensive board that will support that drive and is easy to set up as a samba server..... thanks.

Thanks to ASUS, I got my hands on one of these after seeing what appeared to be a giant heat sink fin integrated into the top of the case. This case may be of interest to non-Tinker owners as well, it is not designed like the equivalent Pi cases with a fixed aluminum stud touching the SoC. Instead it has a small aluminum block that has an adhesive side, and a thermal pad side, and is clamped down onto the processor by putting the two halves together. This allows some freedom on the location of the SoC relative to the lid. First off, same nice packaging the Tinker owners are familiar with: The case itself is quite …

I wanted to test also a H3 device in between with 1GB DRAM but since results are somewhat predictable I dropped the whole idea (the performance bottleneck on all Fast Ethernet equipped devices will be network unless you add the $7.50 for an USB-Ethernet dongle -- see below -- and all other Gbit Ethernet capable H3 devices are not…

https://www.mccdaq.com/DAQ-HAT.aspx I've reached out about whether or not they know if the software works with non-RasPi boards. I'm not dropping $99 to test it personally, if it fails then what? But, looks like a nice setup if mated with a proper board. The other option of course is to build one myself, but then it becomes a question of software, which would take far longer than the hardware itself.

The above thing is a $10 accessory that can be ordered together with ROCK64 (and maybe other Pine Inc. devices like Pine64 or Pinebook?). It's an USB-to-SATA bridge (JMicron JMS578 based) to be used together with 2.5" SSD/HDD or 3.5" HDD. For the latter purpose it's equipped with a separate power jack suitable for the usual 12V 5.5/2.1mm power barrels (centre positive) you find PSUs with literally everywhere. TL;DR: If you want to add storage to your ROCK64 order this cable too. It works great with both 2.5" and 3.5" disks and it's somewhat sad it's not available separately since it's a great storage companion for many other devices too. Basics fir…

This is some more research based on prior efforts. The goal is to make more efficient use of available RAM. If the system runs low on memory only two options are possible: either the kernel invokes the oom-killer to quit tasks to free memory (oom --> out of memory) or starting to swap. Swap is a problem if it happens on slow media. 'Slow' media usually describes the situation on SBC. 'Average' SD cards (not A1 rated) are slow as hell when it's about random IO performance. So swapping is usually something that should be avoided. But... technology improves over time. In Linux we're able to swap not only to physical storage but since a …

Why not recommending to just do an 'apt install p7zip ; 7zr b'? Since 'fire and forget' benchmarking is always BS. You need some monitoring in parallel to know whether your system was really idle and at which clockspeeds the CPU cores were operating (throttling occuring or not?). Most recent 7-zip contains an own routine to 'pre-heat' the system prior to starting the benchmark (to let cpufreq scaling switch from low clockspeeds to highest ones and e.g. on Intel systems let the system enter TurboBoost modes). Th…

  99. UPDATE 11-FEB-2017: Version 2.2.0 is released: now including video recording in stead of only images and also a privacy option to black out areas that may not be filmed. UPDATE 09-FEB-2017: Version 2.2.1 is released: memory leak(s) fixed and in some cases video stopped recording. This should be fixed now. Download via this page. Kerberos.io (link) is a relative new video surveillance program focusing mainly on the Raspberry Pi. In collaboration with the owner of the github project I managed to get it working on my Orange Pi Plus and PCDuino3 nano using Armbian (Debian Jessie) and a Logitech UVC compatible USB webcam. It consists of 2 modules: the Machiner…

  100. Hi there, this very short tutorial is a solution when you need to backup/clone/save as small *.img file as possible of your whole fully bootable system (e.g. you have 8GB card but you want to make smaller system image for 2GB card). And another reason why I created this tutorial - I need to burn the same image to many microsd cards. I am using Windows (yup, hate me know) and Debian in these steps: Put your microsd card to Windows machine and make image of card with Win32diskimager. If your card is e.g. 8GB, you get *.img file with the same size (my name backup.img). Now in linux maxine (in my case Debian virtual machine) we are going to work with…
