  1. I seem to be running around in circles trying to make a decision about a new SBC to add to the herd. The job is currently being done by an OrangePi PC (H3, 1Gb), and is mostly about generating static web sites, which means rendering static HTML/json/js files and uploading them via SCP to a cheap shared hosting provider (the orange pi does not do the actual hosting). This means daily downloading of data from the web (a few hundred MB) and crunching this data to use it for the site. Currently it downloads my country's official covid cases data and generates per-city-daily-cases-per-capita with rolling averages in HTML graphs, this allows easier compa…

Hi there, I noticed that current Raspbian distributions use an extra group called "gpio" for /dev/sys/gpio access. Somewhere I read that this coud be accomplished via udev but I also read that /sys is not affected by udev (only /dev). Anyhow, what can I do to permanently set gpio permissions to a group e.g. "gpio"? Would it be of general interest to include this in Armbian?

Hello guys and girls, I'm new around here, looking for a board to power my network storage needs. Up until now I've been running a 2TB USB3 Seagate Expansion connected to a ASUS AC68U router and things were just fine until free space started to be a problem. Recently I "inherited" a 2TB USB 2 Seagate Expansion which I was thinking of putting to good use. Some other 2.5" SATA HDD's might come my way in the future so I was thinking of taking a stone of the router and building a small NAS. The main usage will be SMB served sequential operations involving video files (daily) and occasional backups. The current numbers stay around 25-30 MB/s writ…

Hello! Firstly, I would like to thank the Armbian devs for their awesome work, without it a lot of my boards would have such a poor support... I am currently doing a school project which involves embedded pentesting, using a drone. I am looking for: the cheapest (we have a limited budget) the most powerful (to use some tools such as password cracking) the most energy efficient (it will running on powerbank/batteries) the lightest and the smallest (to be embedded in a drone) it has to have full size USB ports/OTG/headers (to connect an external powerful WiFi adapter) and if possible, has to have WiFi embedded (we might control …

  6. Hi Armbians Maybe some of you already wanted to put your SBC in a professional data center and operate it as a standalone server for DNS, VPN, Tor, or whatever. That is exactly why I have put together a huge list of worldwide DC provider options, that are willing to colocate SBC‘s. It could certainly be of interest to one or the other. Check my list here: *** SBC colocation/ SBC hosting worldwide provider megalist ***

Recently, nothing is happening on the SBC market. Libre Computer seems to be in a bad financial condition after having failed with La frite and the kickstarter campaign. Projects on SBC on cpu amlogic S912 and S922 are dead and it is not known if they will see the light of day. Pine is busy with its smartphone and probably nothing new will not be released yet. Xunlong who lives not from sales but from subsidies from the Chinese government is also silent. Expected allwinner processors from the new A100, A200 series are just under design. Only khadas released VIM3L from the S905X3 cpu. They even have a linux image already on this board. It can be downloaded from the khadas …

  8. In one post here I saw a "please buy hardware we recommend" quote, and I appreciate that, but I wasn't able to find a recommended boards list - is there even one? Or should I just use the standard/platinum support filtering on the main page? Anyway, I could also use some help / recommendation for a general purpose SBC as I ... didn't by one for years. I'm looking for a more recent SBC to run a small, low power server (think pihole, homeassistant, zigbee, etc). I don't have specific requirements, but I'd like the board to have some kind of "long term support" and I'd also like to choose something that the armbian team would recommend, maybe from a manufacturer …

  9. Hey guys, I am thinking to build a wireless router from a single board computer, so my requirement is that the chosen board to support Linux to have at least one Gigabit port and also to have a PCIe port to connect an external WiFi card and antennas and eventually attach one or more SSDs. So far I looked on the Internet and I am wondering which is a better board for this project Rockpro64, Banana PI BPI-R2 or the EspressoBin. The advantages of the EspressoBin are: it has built-in networking switch with one dedicated WAN and two LAN interfaces all 1Gbps dedicated SATA interface miniPCIe slot for wireless cards stable Armbian support …

  10. Hey folks, Wondering if anyone has come across a dual core or better single board computer that has dual native gigabit ethernet? I'm also trying to find something around $50.. so far the best I've found is the: NXP FRDM-LS1012A-PA - $50 which has good BSP and hardware packet accelerator but only single core @ 800 MHz As a last resort, I'm considering the NanoPi Neo4 with a USB to Gigabit ethernet adapter, thats about $75 with heatsink and USB 3.0 to Gigabit adapter.

At the moment I run a local Jellyfin server on an older amd64 system which @NicoD would call a giant space heater Anyway it would be nice if a proper SBC could replace this thing, last but not least to save a decent amount of space The question is which board is capable and has the proper software support? Anyone here does have experience with video acceleration on SBCs using media servers like plex, emby, jellyfin or whatever they all may called and if so which board, which kernel and how well do things work? Since the data backend is network storage the board does not need either lots of USB3 connectors (one decent is enough for caching) n…

A Beelink X2 by default boots into Android with KODI and can be interrupted to instead boot into Armbian off an SD card. It might be quite advantageous to use a microSD card to jump start Armbian installed on a USB stick plugged in. Cost is one reason: the TF cards cost what the Beelink does, and lots of us have lots of premium USB sticks at less than half the price. This way it could be easier to experiment and even have a personal USB stick for friends and family. When it comes to family media this would help everyone. Myself I'd try various home clouds and server schemes, and whatever wins, just run that from the TF slot later on. Plus if you …

When running Build_OrangePi.sh, right after entering the initial password, it drops out and claims the file lib32z1-dev not locate able. I've built my own security cameras for about 8 years (using computer vision, ML, etc.), but now I want to do something off the shelf so to speak. I just wired my attic to my office with cat 6 cable and my house is wired with cat5e, More than likely the cameras will be plugged directly into the SBC from the attic via PoE. My question is which SBC would be able to handle hardware H265 decoding using 4K cameras at 30 fps? That's about 27 Mbps per camera times 4 cameras. iperf test from my attic showed 961 Mbps using ODroid XU4. So my questions are: Which SBC can handle H265 hardware decoding of four 4K cameras? I want to have 2 1Gbps ports, so I can have camera…

We were able to spend only two hours a week with these kids, and it was simply not enough. I was aware at the time of apps like Duolingo which were extremely effective due to fact that the student can self-learn on theit OWN TIM…

Sadly no original packaging, seem to have discarded that for some reason and it has been sitting in direct sunlight so has a slither of fading on the top but still working away fine up until a few days ago. I needed a small zero cross detector to switch SSR's efficiently and properly in my DIY reflow oven so I designed these in KiCad, and built them. They are optically isolated (5000V Isolation) and Low power (less than 120mW) so are safe to hook up to any board supported by Armbian (or any other SBC) (provided you safely wired them to the mains) and produce a nice open drain low going pulse for 1ms (50Hz AC) centred dead around zero cross. (about 0.83ms for 60Hz AC). On the digital side they will interface to any logic level between 1.8V and 5V. The thing is I only need 2, and I have spares because I had to get 10 PCB's minimum. 45. I just released my multi-system game emulator (GameBoy+NES+GameGear for now). Optimized for directly outputting to SPI LCD displays (e.g. ili9341). Runs on any CPU type, but has optimizations for ARM+X64. I wrote 100% of the code, so it might be behave differently than other game emulators. GB+GG are nearly perfect. NES is missing some popular mappers. The code is very optimized to begin with, but also uses a dirty-tile system to minimize the data sent to the SPI bus. This allows inexpensive SPI displays (e.g. ili9341) to run at or near 60 frames per second for many games even though the SPI bus can only do 30FPS of full screen updates. https://github.com/bitbank2/sg_fre…

Hi, from armbian-config I can install several programs, e.g. softether VPN Server. The version installed is rather old now (nevertheless it is still working). Is there an update for the armbian-config installable software or do I have to update it myself (in case of softether: download & compile, not via apt-get)? Thanks for any help! Steve

Hi folks, I upgraded my server towards a bigger machine and unfortunately neither my parents nor brothers need a reliable fileserver. So this little machine goes on sale. - Helios64 with all trays + 2 SSD inserts - Fully assembled - Original packaging - Changed the two fans for Noctuas in order to get an even more silent server What's missing is the Battery for UPS. Mine was faulty and caused me some random reboots. Condition is mint / very good. System is stable with 5.15.93 running OMV6. If you would like pictures of the machine itself please drop me a note.

Hello there, I have been doing research in regards to finding software or a script that has the ability to monitor the microphone noise and compare it to a wav file I have previously recorded. I've found a technique where someone uses SOX and identifies the maximum amplitude of the noise using a ruby script. It sounds like it should work but I'm worried about false positives. I'm curious if there is something out there that compares the microphones sound spectrograph with the wav file in real time? My end goal is to be able to monitor my basements sump pump usage. When the pump runs, the PI listens then, hits a URL using curl which then insert a…

  60. The past few weeks I did see a lot of anger and frustration on this forum. Key contributors of the forum (.. Armbian developers) seem to struggle with the level of their audience. People ask for functionality which is not around because of bad hardware, people aspect certain things from Armbian which are not possible, people expect “out of the box” solutions, no feedback from users, etc., etc. I personally think this is getting more and more a problem. The risk is that key Armbian developers get frustrated and not motivated to continue their absolute fantastic contribution to the development of “THE NUMBER ONE OS” for SoC Arm boards! Hi, I have a question regarding standard DNS server entry in resolv.conf: The Google DNS 8.8.8.8 is at the top followed by the one supplied by my DHCP service. That way the Google server will be queried first, which I think is wrong, considering privacy implications. Why is it hardcoded anyway? As I understand it, it comes from /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head? this should not include anything. Would be nice If somebody could clarify why it is implemented that way. Thanx

  73. This post is to share my successful webcam installation with Armbian and one of my SBC’s (orange pi plus). I’ve used a Logitech C270 which can be purchased from eBay for roughly 20 Euros. Also el-cheapo shops like lightinthebox sell the C270. Benefit of such a cam is that you now have a cable from your SBC to your cam which makes (physical) cam installation easier IMHO. Also IMHO the C270 is a better camera than the famous GC2035, but it is also more expensive. Price / 'bang for the buck' ratio is more or less the same for both camera’s if you ask me. You get what you pay for. Enough talk now: the installation All I did was a fresh Armbian desktop v5.20 …

I am running on fedora as can be seen here. Fedora is not device-specific, only architecture-specific. If you want to experiment, drop in a distro-boot capable u-boot for your device in the firmware area and you should be good enough to go. I have never tested my image on a different device so YMMV.
