I've taken peeks at threads related to hardware decoding (of H.264 and HEVC, mainly) on Allwinner and Rockchip platforms on and off, sometimes dabbled in trying and failing to implement solutions recommended there. Being a complete amateur, I find the topic very opaque and confusing, with various different components that need to interface with each other, be patched in sync, and sometimes change drastically between kernel versions, etc. Today I sat down and read up on these subjects, scouring wikis, documentation, this forum, and assorted other sources to try and understand how this works. In this post I will attempt to compile what I've learned on the different software…

Armbian implements some basic 'system logging' at every startup and shutdown and contains a little utility to provide this collected information combined with some more useful debug info from user installations. All that's needed is executing 'sudo armbianmonitor -u' (or armbian-config --> Software --> Diagnostics) and then all this support related information is uploaded to an online pasteboard service automagically (see example output) How to interpret this wall of text? The output is best read from bottom to top since the most important information is collected during upload: At the bottom /proc/interrupts contents to chec…

Hi there, I have been using Ubuntu stock from Hardkernel but it is worse than a kick upon my jewels... As usual only Armbian is the way to go, however I personally dislike Ubuntu therefore I'd like to go with Debian but I didn't get the difference between CLI and Minimal. Can anyone advise me? Thanks in advance, F.

Hello everyone, I was used to use the cubox-i running on a hummingboard (2 years ago) and tried to install a pps source using pps-gpio module and the GPIO1 (pin 7) of the HummingBoard jumpers. Given that pps-gpio requires an entry in the device tree for pps, and I couldn't find/patch/recompile again sources (image was built by another person), I decompiled the imx6q-hummingvboard.dtb present in /boot, then modified it adding : pps { compatible = "pps-gpio"; gpios = <0x01 0x01 0x01>; }; and then I recompiled this source and copied into /boot. When I rebooted, the new /dev/pps1 was created and the pulses were rece…

So, back again. I keep seeing the ethernet connection dropped. When logging in by USB the login reports IP <blank> (see picture). I saw this previously (see full set of traumas here https://organicmonkeymotion.wordpress.com/category/orange-pi/). Happens now on freshly burnt image using Etcher. Ran for two days. The problem also manifested using an image burnt with WIN32DiskImager so we can discount any FS corruption assumptions - the Etcher burn reported no errors. Call it "Phantom Ethernet" in honour of Screaming Jeeby - that is the board is haunted wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…

Hello, I'm new to Armbian. I've recently tried Olimex's image for a13 (https://github.com/OLIMEX/build). I saw (and read) on armbian's guide that there's the possibility to customize images build. I need to add two specific drivers (smsc95xx for my eth interface and uvcvideo for my webcam) to kernel. I can find their sources in build\cache\sources\linux-mainline\linux-5.0.y\drivers, but they are not listed in various "modules.order" files (ok, so that's why my devices doesn't get loaded). If I want to add these modules to kernel the only way is to create a patch for "modules.order" in userpatches\kernel (if it's the right directory), or there's a …

Hi Guys, I am working with Orange and Banana Pi development boards all with a minimum og 8GB eMMC chips. I am looking for a process to clone a working system to an SD card and using it as a checkpoint for my configuration changes so should I mess things up I can revert to the previous checkpoint. I have used 'dd' in the past but it is considerably bigger than the standard install images and it slows down the recovery process quite a lot. Is there a better way for me to clone the working system to an SD card. Thank you in advance, Rick

I had boards like Asus TinkerBoard or others with AMLogic chips that have the hardware support but lack the software part. Does Armbian have support for some SBCs with "true" video acceleration for linux? (aka vendor is not an asshole that doesn't share the required drivers to use the features it sells?).

Hello everyone, i'm currently running a Nanopi M4 on Armbian 4.4.190-rk3399 with a DVBSky S960 DVB-S tuner. But since the upgrade to 4.4.190-rk3399, every time I try load the module "dvb_usb_dvbsky" I get a segmentation fault and my board completely locks up. Hi, I hope this is the right place to post this question. I just installed Armbian onto a Odroid XU4 and it looks great but I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I can't paste more than about 146 characters into the terminal. I'm logged in over SSH. I'm trying to create a text file by pasting the contents in from my mac's clipboard and every time it only pasts the last ~140 characters of the text. I've tried everything and searched everywhere and can't figure out where this is being limited. Any help would be greatly appreciated : ) Joel.

Hello. I created a HotSpot with my Orange Pi Zero H2 with the latest version of Armbian Bionic. Everything seems to work, but I need the access point to reserve dynamic IPs, ie for a device with MAC address XX.XX.XX.XX.XX I have to reserve and then assign a specific IP address XXX.XXX. XXX.XXX. Any idea how to configure this HotSpot? Do I have to add some commands to the hostapd.conf file or what? Thanks in advance for any help.

A month or two back, when I installed Armbian, I had to revert to an older kernel, 5.10.63-rockchip64, which has known vulnerabilities. I needed to be able to boot off of a USB 3 HDD, so I had to revert it and hold updates for the kernel/kernel headers. These are the commands I used to revert to the older kernel: sudo apt install linux-dtb-current-rockchip64=21.08.2 linux-image-current-rockchip64=21.08.2 sudo apt-mark hold linux-dtb-current-rockchip64 linux-image-current-rockchip64 Fast forward to today, where the issue with USB 3 has been apparently resolved in the latest kernel, I tried to unhold the kernel/kernel header updates, that seemed to work. …

Hi Guys, I'm new on Armbian but not on Linux in general. I was pleased to see an up-to-date armbian release for my nanopi-r4s with a kernel greater than 6.x ! 🤗 For my first day, it's pretty good and I can find most of the things I was looking for (even ripgrep). But, I have a look at the services and I've found that haveged is still set. For what I know, since 5.18 version, "Linus" changed his mind for entropy (see https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-5.18-RNG). You can have a look at /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail which is always set to 256 now. Thanks again and best regards !

Hi, Just something I have found, not sure if this is an 'issue' but it definitely caught me out and took a while to figure out and fix. I have several armbian machines (Odroid C2, BananaPi Pro) all running Jessie or Stretch and all working fine. A recent project of mine (using Armbian on a BPi Pro) was to build a Pi-Hole DNS. Some time after doing that I noticed that none of the Armbian machines would successfully run 'apt update' whilst other unix machines including a RPi running raspbian were all fine. DNS config was fine, I could see requests hit the Pi-Hole and be answered. nslookup / dig on the armbian machines all worked fine b…

In the past I used a lower end Sandisk's and used external flash drive with nand-sata-install to move system due to endurance. What is the status as of today? Are Sandisk Ultra A1's better than flash drives (i.e. not special "high endurance" ones). I need to ask because the installation is not easy to reach (another part of the city) and current problems may be because of flash failure (didn't get my hand on the devices yet). Any pointers will be much appreciated. PS: I found this today, very interesting read... https://www.delkin.com/technology/flash-endurance/

I assume they are just overloaded and theres not much to do about that. But it has caused one of my system to be out of date for a few weeks I assume because the unattended upgrade script doesnt retry. How do I get this to work? for example some times i have to retry up to 10 times before I can get apt to work (when I try manually). The apt configuration in etc is a bit of magic to me so Id appreciate if someone can guide me to get unattended upgrades to retry connecti…

Hi everybody, In a project I'm working on, I've added two PCA9535 I/O expanders to use 32 additional inputs on my Nano Pi Neo. I've connected the INT line from both multiplexers to the gpio11 interrupt pin on the Nano Pi Neo, and attached to that a pull-up resistor of 10k. I've used interrupts before, but my question is how to poll both PCA9535 I/O using one interrupt? my DTS when polling one (It works!): /dts-v1/; /plugin/; / { compatible = "allwinner,sun4i-a10", "allwinner,sun7i-a20", "allwinner,sun8i-h3", "allwinner,sun50i-a64", "allwinner,sun50i-h5"; fragment@0 { /* This fragment is required only if using interrupts *…

there is a problem using tvheadend package on os armbian bullseye 22.08. if you download the tvheadend package, then after installation you return back to the pseudo-graphical shell and that's it. according to the video from YouTube, people could enter the administrator login and password for authorization in the web interface. but on orange pi pc with os armbian it does not work and without knowing the login and password it is stupidly impossible to get into the web interface. help solve the problem

Greetings! I am trying to enable auto login feature via armbian-config. After I try to go to system > desktop and stop the DM service, it just go to blackscreen with the white cursor blinking on top. I cannot do anything except ctrl+alt+del which reboots the system back to the destop. Is there another way to set the auto login? Am I missing something? I am using Rock 5B board. Thank you for your help!

I have downloaded the cli image file and imaged it to a SD card. However, when I attempt to boot, I never get a screen. I tested the board using the NanoPi-R6 image file and do get the initial setup for Armbian. However, it does not recognize USB devices. I realize that the image for NanoPC-T6 is a work-in-progress, but I don't understand why it doesn't boot. Am I doing something wrong?

I found my NanoPi Neo Air's could not list or connect to some wifi networks. Some investigating found this was because channel 12/13 are disabled by default. Nothing in runtime had any effect on the output of iw reg get as it should have. Patching in some firmware fixes worked for me. wget http://ftp.be.debian.org/pub/software/network/wireless-regdb/wireless-regdb-2025.02.20.tar.xz tar xf wireless-regdb-2025.02.20.tar.xz sudo cp wireless-regdb-2025.02.20/regulatory.db /lib/firmware/ sudo cp wireless-regdb-2025.02.20/regulatory.db.p7s /lib/firmware/ sudo iw reg set AU #Australia I can now connect to wifi channel 13. Etcher understands zip, gzip, bzip2, and I don't know what all else. But it has no idea what a 7z file is. So I have link in proximity for two of the three binaries I need to get, and the third buried in grey on black text at the bottom of the page where nobody will see it and instead they will feel compelled to go out to find it on their own. Are 7z files really enough smaller than bz2 that it's worth this?

Hello, Trying to compile the Qualcomm Gobi serial USB drivers for a Simcom wireless chip on a NanoPi Neo2 (sunxi64). I've loaded the kernel headers via armbian-config and typically this specific header file would be in drivers/usb/serial. We're using the pre-built image. Is there an easy way to get this into our kernel or do we have to embark on a full compile? Any help very much appreciated Rob

I am copying a folder from one drive to another. The transfer operation encounters duplicate files and ask me to Replace, Replace All, Skip, Skip All ,etc. Some of the files may be the same filename but different file-size (e.g., one is bigger than the other). If I choose Skip All, will Armbian Skip regardless of file-size? Or, if I select Skip All, will it show another message when it encounters same filename but different filesize?

I have two HC1s both running Armbian 10. Both of them respond to uname -r with: 4.14.187-odroidxu4 Yesterday, I rebooted one of them, and immediately started seeing errors. These turned out to be attributable to missing modules. The only directory in /lib/modules was 4.14.198-odroidxu4 which does not match the kernel version. The other HC1 still had a directory /lib/modules/4.14.187-odroidxu4. Prior to the reboot both systems were working. How can this happen? My quick solution was to copy the 4.14.187-odroidxu4 directory from the working HC1 to the failed HC1, which solved the problems, at least for the time being. But what is the correct so…

Hello folks, I have completed my Armbian NTP server based on the wonderful little NanoPi Neo3. However something bothers me a bit, i.e. how much delay or latency is in eth0 (It is a 1Gbs port). By checking the default eth0 settings (ethtool -c eth0) I have the parameters below. In particular rx-usec = 327usec means that when a packet is received, the IRQ to alert the CPU can be delayed up to 327usec. With these settings on the nanopi (NTP server) I get about 1msec delay on the NTP client (Windows PC). By cutting the rx-usecs to 35 usecs I get a delay on the client of about 450usec, so a massive improvement and 30% faster than rpi 4. At the mo…

Since December 2013, when I started to deal with CLI Debian images and support them, things become ... bigger. My prime motivation was only to build an working Linux image for some amateur based services. Project brought a lot of fun, a lot of new toys on my desk but also tears and frustrations. I hope and wish that public use our work to the greatest degree. Blog comments - your questions and (not only my) answers - become large and valuable knowledge base for ARM single board computers and general Debian / Ubuntu problems. I already manage to pack some of the into the FAQ but I'll need your help and patience within summarizing this into General FAQ. You only need…

Hello. Sorry for my English, I use google-translate. I want to automate the process, and without removing the SD card from the board. It's real? Many thanks!

I'm supposed to disable the hdmi and enable av-out by script.bin with something like [disp_init] My question is where is this file located? Am I suppose to vi create it? Hopefully someone could provide step by step or point me to the right direction with detailed information.

Hey guys, Coming from high level programming such as Java or C#, I'm quite new to mid-level development. I use Neo4 for media streaming using plex or minidlna. At first I don't know the problem but the movies played from it is lagging. My previous banana pi is better than this. Hi All, I'm planning to use an RK3399-based system-on-module for an embedded application, and would like some advice about the work required to produce an Armbian build that runs on it. The SoM is made by Graperain ( https://www.graperain.com/ARM-Embedded-RK3399-System-On-Module-Gf/ ), and they have provided an SDK which is clearly an old copy of the Rockchip's github repo (4.4 kernel) with some unidentified tweaks to get it working on this board (including .dts files and presumably some bootloader stuff?). I realize this particular board is likely not of interest to the community, but I figure the general discussion around getting a new board running may be. …

Hello everyone, I have a nanopi r2s running the latest minimal focal image, and I'm having trouble with the network configuration. Context: I have an intranet connected to the LAN port (lan0), and my home network connected to the WAN port (eth0). Except for GPIO, where high activity is going on, I cannot find anything in "GitHub-issues" about the other problems, I have raised. I therefore would like to know, what would be the right place to rise issues? Here in the forum, or in GitHub? I mean "issues", not "how tos"

Hi, as I would like to replace my old Banana Pi M1, I wonder which SoC I should use. I'd like to spend maximum 100€. What's the newest supported SoC which is right now available? Dear all, I used win32diskimager to write the armbian image on a 8G sd card and everything works good. when I finish working on the image I read the final image also by using win32diskimager, the size of this image is right now 8G since the sd card size is 8G. After that I wrote this 8G image on a 16 G sd card. when I check the size of this new sd card after writing the 8G image it shows that the sd card size is 8G not 16 G. So, please how can I read an image from a 8G sd card and write it to a 16 G sd card and the size of the sd card remains 16 G to be used later. Best regards
